Mac Pro 2009. Strange Display issue.

I have a very weird problem. After having problems setting up a dual screen setup between my Dell 2707 monitor and a Mitsubishi HC3800, I got the following setup working: Dell hooked up via MDP output with adapter to DVI and Mitsubishi hooked up via DVI output to HDMI.
Signal to dell started having problems, screen would go black for a few seconds and come back. Projector worked OK.
Tried switching Dell to the DVI port and I couldnt make it work(It DID work before I set up the dual screen setup). Tried to go back to MDP port and it wouldnt work either! right now I am using the dell thru the DVI using a DVI to VGA adapter and it works ok(some noise maybe the cable)
Current situation: Projector works perfectly out of the DVI port. Does NOT work thru the MDP.
Dell monitor ONLY works out of the DVI port if using VGA adapter and cable. Cannot get a DVI signal to be recognized.
tested monitor with other computer and recognizes its DVI signal perfectly.
Switched DVI cables.
Going crazy trying things out, to no avail
help!

Mini DisplayPort is not just a different kind of DVI. It is a completely different protocol. You can ask Mini DisplayPort to assert signals SIMILAR TO Single-Link DVI by using an adapter that asserts a signal back toward the computer Interface requesting "DVI-like" output.
If it works that way with a modest adapter such as the Apple Single-Link DVI adapter, consider yourself lucky. All Others will need an ACTIVE POWERED adapter.
If your needs are modest (screen width under 1920 wide) you may be able to get by with a third party ACTIVE single-Link adapter, (current leader is about US$40 on Amazon). Otherwise, the Apple Dual Link adapter (with USB cable to get even more power) or similarly-priced third party adapter may be required.
In my opinion, the Apple Mini DisplayPort to Single-Link DVI adapter should be withdrawn from the market as inadequate.

  • Mac Pro has strange display problems

    Hello,
i have a strange problem with my new Mac Pro.
since maybe 1 week the 2 TFT Displays, connected to the nvidia Geforce 7300 GT went black for 2-5 seconds. The 2 Screens display "No signal" during that time.
Is there a way to test my GFX Card ?
any other ideas howto debug that problem at all ?
I am in warranty, but from my point of view, iwant to check first myself, if there is a method to do so.
    Best regards

    Hi,
i am going to test the One display test. Thx for this idea
    Regarding Monitor Model:
    ViewSonic, VX 924
    http://www.viewsoniceurope.com/de/Products/LCDX/VX924.htm
Both monitors are connected directly, without any adapters. So no sub-d, only DVI usage.
    Regarding AHT:
Is it supposed to check GFX cards too ?
    Regarding SMC/PRAM/NVRAM:
I am kinda new to OS X. Could you explain me that in a more detailed way please ?
    Regarding 101:
Cant find that point in the 101 page
    http://www.apple.com/support/mac101/
thank you very much for the input so far, i am going to test the things, could take some time as i am away for some weeks now. Thank you both.

  • Mac Pro & 30" Cinema Display issue

I've got a weird problem. I've been running two 30" Cinema displays of my first-gen Mac Pro for several years now. I did replace the stock video card with a Radeon 5770 video card earlier this year when the stock card failed, but otherwise no problems with the displays until last week.
I had to temporarily disconnect all peripherals from the Mac Pro to do some work on my desk. After putting everything back together, there were no problems until about a week later when one of the displays went blank. No image, no power light, no nothing. I first suspected that I may not have reconnected that display's cable securly enough, but it checked out OK. Then I thought maybe the cable had developed an internal continuity problem, so I wiggled all leads - especially the power cord at the power brick - but no luck there, either.
My next best guess was that there was a problem with the power brick to which the problem display was connected, so I swapped bricks; the problem stayed with the monitor. This proved that the problem was not the brick
Then I thought that perhaps the dual-link DVI port on the Radeon card to which this particular monitor was connected had gone bad, so I swapped the two monitors at the card. The problem followed the monitor.
At this point I figured the monitor was formally and permanently dead. Then one day, while working with Aperture using the remaining display, the "defective" display came back on! I had created no sudden motion, done no cable wiggling, no nothing. I was just sitting there when - to use one of Steve Jobs's favorite sayings - "boom", it came on. I worked away for several hours with both displays working fine. Then I put the Mac to sleep.
When I returned to the Mac later and woke it up, the problem display was dark yet again. Since then, that display has come and gone several times. No pattern whatsoever.
Has anyone seen this before and, if so, have you found an explanation or, better still, a solution?

Is that the only time (during boot up) and only manifestation (lines in the Apple) of the issue? Have you tried the Flurry screen saver? If it is related to a DVI transmission problem (DVI noise), the Flurry screen saver is an excellent test pattern for revealing that type of problem.

  • 10.8.2   Mac Pro 2009   4 Apple Monitors = doesn't keep the display order and configuration. Please Help me!!

I have brand new 10.8.2 Mac Tower with two matching video cards ordered from Apple directly and have the same problem. It wont save the display settings and also cant seem to tell which video card is which either.
In addition, the screen display images if loaded from a personal folder, is also not remembered after startup.
Please advise us what to do, Apple!!!! This is urgent for me. I am proifessional user and this machine is for use on live projection shows. We put a ton of money into this machine and it can't even remeber the displays! Not very amusing.

  • HT2090 External iSight camera video feed working fine but mic is not working Mac Pro 2009 and Mountain Lion 10.8.4

Finally I decided to move forward and installed Mountain Lion 10.8.4 (with all the updates). Now I am facing a dilemma, my external iSight Camera  is working fine regarding the video fee but the Mic is useless. I am using a Mac Pro 2009 and a Apple Cinema Display 30". I checked all the trends about iSight External devices but no one has a really specific solution for my problem. Firewire is not longer supported with Mountain Lion? By the way my iSight was working perfectly before. So I am wondering if something wrong happened with the OS and the support for this kind of device?   I reset the PRAM, the SMC, even I reinstalled the MAC OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.4) from scratch. So I am wondering if the problem is that ML is not longer supporting this device or what is the issue here.
Hope someone can help me with it!
    Thanks

Not true.  External iSight works fine with my '09 Mac Pro and 10.8.4.
Jalcom wrote:... So I am wondering if something wrong happened ...
    So it must have.

You have tried several good things, but there may be other suggestions from http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2090 that you have not yet considered.  Be sure to check more than one Apple app in more than one user account to help you pinpoint the cause of your trouble.  Then you will know what to fix.
In addition to the Apple troubleshooting, check your  > System Preferences... > Sound > Input to verify that your iSight's mic is selected, not muted, and that its volume setting is properly adjusted.  You may need to check this again after restarting Mac or changing apps that use the mic.
Also, be certain that the apps you are testing are configured to use iSight's mic.  Different apps select the mic in different ways.  For example, QuickTime X allow selection among various microphone alternatives via one of its preferences as shown in the image below:
(I was using my Display microphone and did not have my external iSight connected when I made this image.  Therefore, there is no iSight mic shown in my list of mic choices above.  If your iSight's mic is properly connected, turned on, and recognized by your Mac, iSight will show in your QTX microphone preference choice list.)
If you are trying to use your iSight with a Flash based web site, also check your Mac's  > System Preferences... > Flash Player > Camera and Mic settings to verify that your Flash system preferences are not blocking your mic.
Some other apps may offer mic and or camera selection via their application menus.  If you have trouble finding out how to select the iSight internal mic in other apps, check each apps' Help or post back the name of the app whose selector you cannot locate here so we can try to help.

  • Sony DSR-1500a not recognized by Mac Pro 2009

My first post. Hope I'm doing this right....
I have been working with a Mac Pro 1,1 Quad (OS 10.5.6) using a Sony DSR 1500a DVCAM player/recorder with out any issue using firewire 400 and Adobe Premiere and FCS2. I have recently purchased a Mac Pro 2009 (OS 10.5.7) with FCS2 and with Avid MC 3.5.
I cannot get the DSR-1500a to be seen by the OS or FCS2. The only twist is that if I daisy chain my DSR-1500a thru my Avid DNA Mojo. I can capture into Avid Media Composer no problem. I use a FW400 (6pin) from the DSR to the Mojo and a FW400 (6pin) to FW800 cable from the Mojo to the Mac Pro.
I am starting to assume that using a FW400 (6pin) to FW800 cable does not work with the 1500a. I do not see it listed in system profiler when connect directly to the Mac Pro. I have adjusted the DSR setting to iLink and also have tried 9Pin setting but neither work. Tried more than one cable as well.
I can successfully connect my cheap Sony TRV38 via a FW400 (4pin) to FW800 cable but not the professional deck...Go Figure...
I know it's not the deck as it works with the Mac Pro 1,1 using the FW400. Is there an OS setting I am missing? Do I need to buy a FW 400 card? Please help! Thanks

As I suspected... I had to buy a 1394a firewire card to enable the communication between the Mac Pro and the Sony DSR-1500a. Apparently the DSR does not subscribe to the reverse compatibility that Apple has forced on us of going from a FW400 (6pin) to FW800 (9pin) in reverse compatibility mode. I guess Apple can take the Sony DSR-1500a off of their qualified hardware list. If I have missed something, someone please enlighten me. Until then, looks like Apple has struck again. Oh I know, I'll go out and buy a $1000 capture card. Wow! I thought I was getting a well engineered product, instead I got a money pit! Forcing a Mini Display Port down our throats, NO firewire 400 ports, 8 slots of ram on tri-channel memory...Who's the engineer that came up with that one? Screeeaaammm!!!
OK I feel better now... Who do I make the check out to? %#@^

  • Mac Pro 2009 8 core with an endless cycle while booting up

    Dear all,
My Mac Pro 2009 edition (2.26 GHz,8-cores) is suffering from a weird situation which I can't solve, so I post the message and hope someone can help me to find a solution.
On Monday Morning, I found the rainbow cycle is running behind the screen saver after shifting my mouse. The Mac Pro was not responding (can move mouse), so I pressed the button for 5 secs to shut it down. Then, I pressed the start button and saw there is a folder with question mark on the screen. After looking several web pages, I realized that it might be the RAID is failed for some reasons. I used the OS X installation disc to boot up and found that the RAID card was not recognizing the original RAID 0 build while the RAID card was shown to be healthy. I decided to restore my system from the time machine (WD Green 2TB x2, RAID0), so I checked the content of the time machine and hoped that I can find since when the machine is not responding. Then, it was 5:36PM on Friday, the last backup (backup per hour). So, it has been freezed for more than 2 days right after I left my office! Anyways, I used RAID utility to rebuild the RAID 0 (1TB x 4) and started recovering the last backup. After 11 hrs, the restore had been successfully done, so I clicked the restart button. However, after booting up, I got a grey apple and a running circle below it. The loading screen remained for 10 hrs and wouldn't get in.
I sensed that there is something wrong. It couldn't be fixed by simply restoration by time machine. Therefore, I started exhaustively surffing the internet and looking for an answer. Here are things I have tried but didn't work:
    1. Restoring from three different time points: last time point, 1 hour before the last time point, and midnight on Thursday. Not working.
    2. Remove Mac Pro RAID Card and use Disk Utility to build SoftRAID 0. Not working.
    3. Remove ATI Raedon 5770 and replace with the original GT120. Not working.
    4. Use Apple Hardware Test from Application installation disc to perform both default and extended tests. Found no problems.
    5. Replace SDRAM with the originial 6GB (1GB x 6) SDRAM.
    6. Tried reseting PRAM (3 to 4 times each)
    7. Tried reseting logic board by following the instructions from macusersguide (http://www.macusersguide.com/2009/06/reseting-the-logicboard/).
(*)8. I tried to boot from another HardDisk, which I installed Win7 on it a few months ago (including all needed drivers for the Mac Pro). It is an originial Win 7 and it works! I also tried to test the 4 HDs by using the windows experience index. I tried 5 times (1 disks individually and all 4 disks enabled). All tests passed.
So far, I can only conclude that the hardware seemed fine, and it could be a software thing which blocks me from getting into the Mac OS.
I have been working on this for 3 days, and I am really tried. Could someone help me addressing this issue? Is there anything I can do to test which part is doing wrong? Should I test more time points in the time machine? Should I just hand my Mac Pro to Apple retail stores and asking for fixing (apple care expired and they would charge fees..)?
    Thank you so much

Frankly, if you want a reliable backup from which you can boot the computer, then don't use TM. Use a backup utility that makes bootable backups starting with the Restore option of Disk Utility. Here are others:

  • Graphics card and windows 7 on Mac Pro 2009

    Hi all,
I have a mac pro 2009 with a Nvidia GT 120 and have windows 7 bootcamped. I am a keen game player and I have to say playing the likes of Aion are not that good.
I was wondering if a ATI Radeon HD 5870 would be any better? It has a display port which would allow me connect my 24" Apple cinema screen. I was wondering if anybody has any opinion on the matter?

    Hi!
Welcome to the forums! When Apple finally brings out the 5870 for sale, it will be the best card for the mac pro. I am also a heavy gamer in windows 7 and can tell you that the 5870 is a much better card compared to the GT120 which is not such a good gaming card..
Even the 4870 is better than the GT120 and like the 5870, you will be able to use the 24 inch LED Cinema display.
I hope I answered your question for you..

  • Macbook Pro w/ Retina Display Issues with Wifi with Bluetooth.

I have a Macbook Pro with Retina Display, 2.3 Ghz model.  I've noticed that while on wifi, when I use a bluetooth mouse or even turn on bluetooth on my computer, the wifi performance severely decreases for a short period of time.  While using a bluetooth mouse the wifi intermittently fails and I need to shut off wifi and turn it back on to correct the issue.
Using the ping utility on terminal I have confirmed this in that when bluetooth is turned on, a large number of packets are lost for about ten seconds.
Has anyone else been experiencing this problem and is this an issue I can correct myself or should I contact Apple?
    Thanks

I have the same issue with my macbook pro with retina display. I have 2 macbook pros. I never would of thought that a bluetooth signal was interfering with both of them. I had a gateway wireless router that only had 2.4 Ghz 802.11 b/g, which is the same frequency of bluetooth. I know that bluetooth bounces from channel to channel, whereas wifi sticks to one constant channel (normally). I have reinstalled my mac twice, thinking that somehow my drivers were corrupted. This was false becuase everytime I reinstalled it did the same thing, Act fine for 5-10 minutes and randomly the internet connection would freeze up all together for 10-20 seconds. I have also tried contacting apple multiple times and they tried to do a smc and pram reset. They also tried to get rid of my chaches in my computer. It all seemed to be fine, and then when I got off the phone it would act us once more.
I have read numerous articles to try and fix the situation; one of them was to try change the location of the network and change the MTU size. No help. I called At&T (my internet provider) and got a new router and that did work for a while. But eventually acted up again. The router was still 2.4 GHz 802.11 b/g. I read this article and found out that my Magic Mouse might be causing the issue. Turns out to be true. Everytime I would browser the internet or browse the itunes store and it would freeze, i would immediatly turn the bluetooth off and what do you know, it works!!! This is a huge dissapointment in apple however. It seems to be only a macbook pro w/ retina display issue. My other macbook pro only acts up when i'm using my newer one (something is wrong with the bluetooth and wifi in the retina for the 2.4 ghz frequencies.
I just got a Airport express, and have not experienced this issue what so ever. This is due to the fact that it is a dual band wireless router. It supports 2.4Ghz and 5 Ghz both at 802.11 a/b/g/n which is a major improvement compared to what I had. I use the 5Ghz frequency and have no issues still.
This is still an issue however because if I want to go out and use anothers persons wifi, I can't control their frequency. So I will still have this issue.

  • Nvidia Quadro 4000 is  Freezing / shutting down / Buggy with Mac Pro 2009

I currently have two Nvidia Quadro 4000 mac cards and there causing my Mac Pro 2009 machine to kernel Panic and freeze or shutdown my machine.
I dropped it off at the Apple store for them to diagnose the problem for 9 days and they went ahead and confirmed that it was the card which was causing the problem.
NVIDIA PLEASE UPDATE YOUR DRIVERS FOR THIS CARD FOR MAC.
Its ridicules that if you spend $1200 (apple store) that it will crap out your Mac Pro. I'm waiting for a updated driver in order to test the stability with the Mac Pro
I'm almost 100% sure I did the 10.6.6 update with the stock card, then installed the most updated drivers from Nvidia website and then installed the Cuda Drivers, then finally installing the Video card in the machine. After two days, system was acting up.
Once I get my machine back from Apple tomorrow, I will go ahead and give it one more last try to see if it works. I'm mean the cards are amazing with Adobe Premiere and Media Encoder (super fast), but at the cost that your machine will be very buggy.
Lets wait and see what Apple, Nvidia or PNY will do about the big problem. I'm wanting to keep these babies, so make some moves people and fix the issues for the Professionals.

I hadn't been experiencing the problems you have, but I have been having issues, and yes it absolutely is a case of immature drivers. When the card was released in December, nVidia merely did a simple patch job on the 256.01.00f03 driver that shipped with 10.6.5 rather than include an optimized driver that was comparable to the 259.x driver available on the Windows platform at the time.
Since then, nVidia's engineers have been hard at work doing what appears to be nothing for the Mac. On the Windows side, the Quadro drivers have progressed to 267.11. Rather than provide Apple with updated drivers to include with 10.6.6 or this week's 10.6.7 release, they chose to sit back and wait for the 10.6.7 release and then release their own update.
After 4 months, their best and brightest have brought us <drumroll> driver version 256.01.00f03. To be fair, they changed it from "v5" (the patch job to enable Quadro 4000 compatibility) to "v6". The idea was that it would add compatibility for the Quadro 4000 running under 10.6.7, Sadly for nVidia's Quadro engineers, that driver's installer didn't actually work. It took them nearly a full day to fix that, finally releasing 256.01.00f03v7. As expected, there are no improvements in either performance or stability. In fact, what happened to me is that the new driver actually broke compatibility with Adobe Premiere Pro CS5's Mercury Playback Engine GPU acceleration feature.
Fortunately, I still had my GTX-285 card available, and this evening I pulled the Quadro and re-installed the older GTX card. I really wish nVidia would care enough to release a solid driver update, I really want to like the Quadro 4000. On paper the potential for video production and OpenGL rendering performance should be huge.

  • Mac Pro 2009 Won't Turn On at all

i have a mac pro 2009 with 2.66ghz quad core xeon. today i just upgraded the graphics card from 8800GT to HD4870 and put a new 2TB hdd in with fresh install of Lion. went to dinner come back the computer is off i thought that's weird, hit the power the mac pro keeps on for 3 seconds then off, tried couple of times to turn on now it wont even start at all. if i hit the power button it just doesnt give me any response. does that mean a broken power supply or is it more look like a front panel issue?

  • Will Remote Desktop allow me to access and use my Mac Pro 2009 from my MacBook Pro 2011?

Own a small business, have two locations, I need to use Windows via Parallels on my Mac Pro 2009, but I am forced to spend most of my time at the other location which has a MacBook Pro 2011. Will Remote Desktop allow me to use the MacBook Pro 2011 to access the Mac Pro and use Windows via Parallels?

If all you need is to be able to control another computer, then ARD would be overkill. If the systems have Mac OS X 10.5 or later you can use the Screen Sharing built into those versions of Mac OS X to control the system.
Another and perhaps easier option is to use a service such as LogMeIn or TeamViewer. Either option may be significantly easier than dealing with screen sharing or ARD.
You'll want to confirm that any solution you choose will work with Parallels, of course. I haven't tried remote control of a system to use Parallals, so there may be special considerations there. If you don't get useful comments here, you might try Parallels' forums.
    Regards.

  • Since purchasing my Mac Pro with retina display, I can no longer change the preferences on MP Navigator for Canon MX870. Help?

Since purchasing my Mac Pro with retina display, I can no longer change the preferences on MP Navigator for Canon MX870. I can change them on my old Mac Pro with Lion, but not the new one. I can scan but I can't save it to a folder on my hard drive. I can only let it default to a back up date folder. Tried all sorts of things to change the preferences and folders, nothing worked. Ideas?

To prevent your iPhone from automatically syncing when you plug it in, click on iTunes in the menu bar, then preferences, then "devices", then tick "prevent iPhones, iPad's and iPod's from syncing automatically".
Plug it in, then on the iPhone sync summary screen, click "info" along the top.
Make sure the "sync contacts" option is not ticked. as long as it's not ticked, then it won't sync with your mac's contacts but will still include them in backups.
Also, if you use iCloud, make sure that the iPhone/mac are either not signed into the same account, or that "contacts" is not turned on for both of them

  • Mac Pro 2009 won't boot.

    Hello,
Since yesterday my computer simply refuse to boot (Mac Pro 2009, Quad-Core 2.93 with a flashed Radeon 5870).
It was working fine the day before, I shut it down, unpluged it and when I came back the following day it wasn't working anymore.
When I try to boot it I can hear the fans but not the starting "DONG" it should do.
I tried to replace the graphic card with my old ATI 4870, tried to switch with some old RAM I had and tried to disconnect my hard drives one by one but it did nothing at all.
The only thing I have is this red dignostical LED you can see on this picture. I tried to find it's meaning but I wasn't able to find anything.
It would be nice if someone was able to tell me what this LED meant (and even nicer if it wasn't something expensive to replace !).
    Thanks !

    Hello once again,
So, I finally had time to look a little deeper into this processor board and after removing the heatsink and cleaning the processor I noticed two little plastic screws (the ugly little red arrow on the picture I took from macbidouille.com, not the nice and big one) maintaining another heatsink on the board.
I'm not sure what is the component under this heatsink but one of these screws was broken (they aren't really screws but I don't know how to explain in English) and the heatsink wasn't correctly positioned anymore so I replaced these two screws, put everything back in order (with some thermal grease on the processor and the unknown component) and everything worked like a charm when I was done.
Thanks everyone for your help !

  • Mac Pro 2009-2010 firmware tool

Has anyone tried the Mac Pro 2009-2010 firmware tool hack that is floating around out there? It seems to work with no problems. A cheap way to turn your 2009 quad core into a 2010 hexacore. The price on the Xeon W3680 3.33Ghz Westmere has come down out of the stratosphere into the $500 range. $500 for that kind of speed improvement and the ability to run 1333Mhz RAM seems like a no brainer if one were thinking about upgrading. Have other people tried this?

This is not the place and no I have not heard, if there is/was it would be talked about on MacRumors, netkas or others. And I don't think it would be just firmware update. OWC Turnkey program involves more than just firmware change.
The W33680 was $590 but has gone up (popularity and supply/demand) to $620. Not $500 (though if you sell your cpu later then the out of pocket might be more like $400).

  • Mac Pro 2009 won't boot after airport installation

Hey everyone, looking for some insight here.
I recently bought a Mac Pro 2009 running Mavericks (at time of receipt). It didn't come with an airport card so I purchased one to install myself. The Mac was running fine until this evening when I finally got around to installing the card, however since then it won't get past the grey boot screen with apple logo. I've tried disconnecting the airport card to see if that reverted it, but no change. I also can't boot into safe mode, so that's no good. The only thing I can do is bring up the giant padlock with the option key held, which I saw elsewhere was connected with a firmware password (my admin doesn't work).
Any advice here would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

It wouldn't be much of a lock if you could circumvent it with advice from a forum.
Obviously a valid point, although possibly somewhat niaive where forums are concerned (no disrespect intended).
It was more an expression of frustration than anything else, to be honest, though. It's kind of absurd that this happened following a simple hardware upgrade. Most people I know aren't even aware they can set a firmware password, so basically what it means is don't upgrade a machine that's intented to be upgraded (I'm aware of the hyperbole here).
Looks like it will be a Mac store trip, though, yes. A pain in the arse since even my nearest authorised technician is miles away.
