Mac Pro 2012 Refresh Quandary

Hello All
I have a Mac Pro 2008, 3,1, 2.8ghz 2xQuad core. It is over 4 years old. I'm editing in Premiere Pro CS5.5 and I have a NVidia Quadro 4000 card and 24GB of RAM and SSD startup drive and multiple RAID 0 internal and eSATA RAID 5 Qx2 enclosures and eSATA PCI cards. I believe I've maxed out the performance. I was waiting for the new Apple Mac Pro update to make buying a new Mac Pro a good decision. I really don't want to go over to Windows, not to mention the hugh amount of software I'd have to convert over.
However, Apple's update seems weak and outdated and leaves me undecided. Many mention the 6 core as the 'sweet spot', in price vs performance, but I'm wondering really how much of a boost I'll get over my current system. I'm also contemplating building a super high end Hackintosh but that doesn't seem appealing either as doing it in Xeon will be prohibitively expensive not to mention possibly flakey with Mac OS X. I suppose I could also wait for HP or Dell to come out with their E5 offerings and try to put Hackintosh software on that, but again, seems like asking for trouble.
The good thing about updating to a newer Mac pro is that my internal drives, RAIDs PCI cards and peripherals will just work, I will have minimal down time when I switch. Bad thing is 2 year old technology with brand new tech in the G5 Xeons just around the corner.
Right now I really want Premiere Pro to be smooth when natively playing back a combination of AVCHD, H.264 and other files and effects. It's just on the cusp of being too sluggish with my current configuration. From what I can see, I may  double the performance if I go to the single 6 core 3.33, which seems to be a good deal as of the refresh. However, I'm not sure if doubling is what I want considering the money and trouble spent on a new system. At the same time I have heard reports that Premiere Pro and Mac OS X don't do too well with more than 12 cores, the multi-threading isn't taken advantage of and can actually slow down the system. So I am still in a quandry.
Any advice is much appreciated
Regards,
-Keith

I had the exact same conundrum about three months ago. After TONS of research, I decided to build my own PC and I am extremely happy I did. The CS5.5 Master Collection runs beautifully and I FINALLY have control over my hardware. You can put whatever Quadro card you want, whatever processor, RAM, and the list goes on...
And did I mention that I saved loads of money building it myself?
If you aren't afraid of a little bit if work, you can save a lot of money not having to buy overpriced Apple hardware. Also, with Adobe Cloud, you no longer need to worry about what platform you operate under (Windows 7 is a good operating system).
Just my two cents. I hope it helps!

  • Mac Pro 2012 crashes regularly after loading Mavericks

I upgraded the OS to Mavericks, direct from Lion, on my Mac Pro 2012 computer, since when it crashes and restarts spontaneously. Herewith the reports. Can anyone offer a straightforward solution? There is no sign of Google inspired crashes, as with other users. Is Mavericks named to draw attention to its spontaneous behaviour??

Migration Assistant: Problems transferring data from PC (XP SP3) to new Mac Pro 2012 - can not get Migration Assistant to work as PC will not display verfify passcode
Hello, I am having problems migrating data from my old PC running XP (SP3) to my new Mac Pro 2012 using the Migration Assistant.
    - I downloaded and installed the Windows Migration Assistant from Apple
    - My Mac recognized PC and displays passcode
    - The sasscode does not show / display on my PC
    - My Mac is then stuck in "authenticating" loop and the PC is stuck "waiting for Mac to connect."
    - Both computers are connected on same network (have connected PC on WIFI and using ethernet to Reuter)
I have looked on support site and only response I saw says to reinstall Windows Migration Assistant (which I have done)
Any ideas?  If cant get this to workare there instructions for manually bring across relevant data eg itunes music and apps, photos, picasa data etc?

Why not turn off the Windows firewall and uninstall any other firewall software you have installed?
If you are using a Norton product uninstall it and discard it. To fully unistall most Norton products you have to go to the Norton website and download a soecial program to completely get rid of it. The normal uninstall feature built into the program will not remove all of it.

  • HT5219 did thunderbolt display worked with mac pro 2012 12 core ??

i buy mac pro 2012 12 core with thunderbolt display so how i can maake it work with us ??

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
If you want to use a Thunderbolt Display with your 2012 MacBook Pro, you can do it without any problem because your MacBook Pro has got a Thunderbolt port.
If you need help to set up the Thunderbolt Display, see its user guide > http://manuals.info.apple.com/en_US/thunderbolt_display_getting_started.pdf
Instead, if you have a Mac Pro (it looks like you have a Mac Pro because you say that it has got 12 cores), you can't use the Thunderbolt Display because the Mac Pro hasn't got Thunderbolt ports. Instead, you have to use the LED Cinema Display

  • Need help with new Mac Pro (2012)

    Hi for everyone!
Few days ago, I bought a new Mac Pro (Mid 2012) MD770LL/A for my recording studio. The workstation is really powerfull and silent, but it has one major problem for me: computer comes with pre-installed Mac OS X 10.7.3 Lion, and as I understand, I can't install Mac OS X 10.6.8 on this machine. In this case, some plug-ins and instruments, that critical for my works are unavailable for me now. For example - MusicLab RealGuitar and RealLPC thru the VST to RTAS adapter (I'm using Pro Tools in my studio) don't working correctly on a Lion OSX. Unfortunately, I can't find any solution, to fix it... Even on an official support website of that software developers. Secondary, I still need Rosetta for some applications.
In that situation, my studio can't fully work.
So, what I should do??? WHY is officialy impossible to install Mac OS X 10.6.8 on a new Mac Pro, if its components is absolutely identic with Mac Pro 2010, that supported Mac OS X Snow Leo???
    Thanks!
With a big hope for a help!
    Alexey

    Hi!
Good news for anyone, who wants to install Mac OS X 10.6.x on a Mac Pro 2012!!!
As it turned out, the original installation DVD disc from the Mac Pro 2010, fully compatible with Mac Pro 2012! The images of DVD is quite possible to find on the Internet. Just checked on my system - boot from the fresh-burned disc, and Mac OS X 10.6.4 installed without problems! After that, updated to 10.6.8 - and it works!
Personally for me - it is great news!
Everyone have a nice day! Thanks!:-)

  • HT4628 I can not use the internal wireless card with my Mac pro 2012, I don't know if it is broken

I can not use the internal wireless card with my Mac pro 2012, I don't know if it is broken. The problem is happen recently, I have to use an independent wireless card now. Thanks!

When you enable Internet Sharing in OS X, you are creating a separate sub-net.
There is no option to allow this to be a simple pass-through from Ethernet to AirPort (or the other way).
The problem is easily solved by getting an inexpensive wireless router. You can replace your current router OR disable the DHCP server on the wireless router and allow the wireless clients to get an IP address from the current router.

    Hi,

    Issued solved:
    - in order to make nvidia graphics working you have to disable Optimius in BIOS.
    - Battery not recognized -- fixed after recend updates
    - grub2 does not work. As soon as grub2 loads, the laptop reboots. -> stick to grub1  --  works now (either I did sth wrong the first time or a new version of grub2 fixes this issue)
    - in order to make the touchpad work properly install psmouse-elantech from AUR
update: this is only a half-solution. vertical scrolling on the right edge works but graphical tools which rely on x11-input-synpatics still don't work. However, everything works fine with kernel 3.3. Once this in the main arch repos you won't need psmouse-elantech anymore.

  • Yosemite and Mac Pro 2012

Ever since I updated, last Thursday, to Yosemite (on my Mac Pro 2012), I am now listed ON MY OWN COMPUTER as "Standard," not ADMINISTRATOR, which I am and have always been!  Therefore, I can't open many panes in System Preferences or change any settings in it.
I have re-installed Yosemite TWICE (after restarting and/or shutting down several times) and, after the reinstall, I get the "Log In" page and NO OTHER SET UP PAGES!  I can't seem to set myself up as the administrator, in order to manage my OWN computer - a Mac Pro 12-core, 2012.  I even changed my password to this computer.  HELP!

    Hey aniMix,
Thanks for the question. I understand that you are experiencing issues with AirDrop. The following resource provides some troubleshooting information which may be helpful:

  • Mac Pro 2012

I bought a new mac pro 2012-12 core w/12GB memory. I like to add 2-4GB memory sticks. In which slots should I install the 2-4GB memory sticks?
    Thank you,
    Richard

I bought 4-8GB memory sticks from OWC for the mac pro 2012. Installed the 8GB mem stick in slot 1,2,3,4 and the 2GB mem sticks in slot 5,6,7 and 8. booted up the mac pro and got memory slot utility message. Should install the 8GB sticks in slots 1,2,5,6 and fill the rest the 2GB sticks. Did that that and booted up the mac pro however it took over a min to boot up and thats with a SSD drive. It took about 1 min to load FCPX and it woould take forver to render. Tested the memory, tested OK . Took out the memory and reinstalled the 2GB sticks in slots 1,2,3,5,6 and 7. Rebooted the MP STRTED RIGHT UP AS DID FCPX. Sent memory back to OWC, got a refund and bought 2-4GB memory sticks from the apple store. I just want to make sure I install them in the right slots.
    Thank you,
    Richard

  • Audition CC - Compatibility with Mac Pro 2012 (Quad-Core) & RME UFX

I am new here and wanting to use Audition again after being away for years, so I apologize if this is a dumb question. In previewing a training video about Audition CC it highlighted that Audition CC is now 64 bit.  Before I download CC I want to be sure that the 64 bit part does not present a problem for me on my system.  I do not know if my hardware is 32 or 64 bit.  My question is - Will I have any compatibility issues with my hardware: Mac Pro 2012 Quad-Core & RME UFX interface and the Audition CC software?  Thanks for any light you can shed on this for me.

It's not the hardware you want to worry about (that will be 64-bit capable, as all Macs are) but the software. If it's a recent Mac I don't think you'll have any problems at all, though - do they actually do a 32-bit release?
The best thing to do if you're worried about this is to download the trial version and see if that's okay.

  • Mac Pro 2012, GTX 770, OSX 10.8.5 and 4K monitor

    Hi everyone,
I am not sure, so it's better to ask.
I have the previous model of Mac Pro (12 core 3.33GHz) with GTX 770 plugged in. The system is 10.8.5. Till now, I was using Apple Cinema Display HD 30", but I would like to change it to a better monitor with 4K resolution if it will be possible. The question is, will it work fine with this card and under this version of OS?
I don't want to upgrade the OS, because well… I don't like how it looks like, so this version of OS is quite important for me.
The graphic card itself can run this resolution without a problem, but what a bout the OSX? Everything will be OK?

MarekO I do recall your name from before, just not the particulars.
Apple never updates specs on maximum memory, hard drive compatibility and other things. Even the fact that the ATI 5770 worked in any and all Mac Pro models outside of audio support, which was a godsend to many like me with a 2006 1,1.
Someone wrote that one GPU required 800MHz DDR2 (mine came with 667MHz) so people wanted to just swap the memory figuring that was what the graphic card needed. Nothing to do with memory speed. Everything to do with EFI 32 vs 64 (and no mention of UEFI or the more accurate and technical).
    Okay
Did you read where the ASUS monitor customer had trouble? and that a firmware upgrade helped? Notice also the horrid customer support they first received and how miniDisplayPort vs DisplayPort?
I am sorry I don't have more experience or own a 4k monitor Would like to, sure.
There have been - especially a year ago - there was a lot of "hand-wringing" over which brand and models of 4k would even work on a 6,1 - let alone work with GTX 770 (which is supported on your Mac when running Windows btw in 4k mode, so there!)
Here is help and to wet your appetite:
Anyhow, can't help but be reminded today when I discovered how to enable 60Hz 4K MST on Nvidia cards. Seems Apple didn't want the cMP rubbing elbows with nMP so took to some more deliberate knee-capping. (how Kerrigan-esque !)
I put the Asus PQ321 in MST mode and Nvidia GPU can output 3840x2160. And if I run the "OpenClOcenawaves" bench, I get 61fps. Anyone familiar with this app knows it has been locked to refresh rate for last 2 OS builds. You can unhook it with Quartz Debug, but for my purposes, better not.

Exciting stuff!! Though to be honest I had no idea we couldn't already plug a 4K display into our cMP's and get 60Hz support. I thought that was what they fixed in 10.9.3?
Only on AMD cards, been there since 10.9.2 I think. They stacked the deck against Nvidia, they have been limited to 30Hz. Artificially as it turns out.
SST displays are a different story.
    Suddenly it's 1984 - Nvidia 4K 60 Hz support is there, Apple turned it off ( 1 2 3 4)
    MacVidCards
So AMD vs NVidia stuff. And can't cannibalize AMD on cMP without also damaging Dxxx so the R9 280x and above are a safer bet.
People have been (trying) to tell me that the CUDA vs OpenCL is "history" and not as big an issue (though AMD drivers and Adobe apps on nMP 6,1 and those Dxxx's are (or have been) a real issue for the last year. It can take 12-18 months for changes, to make their way into the market and next Adobe upgrade. So they have had their year!

  • Webcam for mac pro 2012

    Hi All,
Is there a web cam recommended for the 2012 mac pro?

I plugged a Logitech Webcam Pro 9000 (few years old) into my new Mac Pro (mid 2010) with Mountain Lion and it worked right off the bat with no configuration.  This was not a "Mac" HD web cam, but one I purchased for my Windows 7 PC.
The Pro 9000 puts the old iSight to shame, at least in Photo Booth.
