Mac Pro 2x2,8 Ghz - Fan Noise - Please help evaluate

Hi Guys,
Since yesterday, I'm the proud owner of a Mac Pro 2x2,8 - Really happy - really nice machine.
However I'm slightly irritated by the posts I've read all over the internet, saying that you can't hear the fans of this machine at all in idle.
As you may have guessed, my box is not silent at all - it is quite quiet compared to other noisy PCs, yes, but no match for the previous iMac 24" which it replaced. You could hardly hear the iMac versus now the Mac Pro... you notice it's there... sitting under the desk - audible.
I realize that fan noise is highly subjective, and I'm using the Mac in a completely silent environment. No AC, no nothing. I've tried the following: removing the hard drive and silencing the graphics card... Upon bootup the Mac would quickly "turbo" it's fans and then go to it's normal state. The loudest fan (which is drowning out all other noise) is the one at the bottom front (CPU?).
Looking at istat, it's in normal parameters (500rpm or so) and doesn't move up or down...
Comparing it to other devices, it would sound like a PS3 when having played 1 hour (fan speed at level 2-3) or an (quiet) xbox in idle mode (dvd not spinning). I know... geeky comparisons
Now, again - not close to my interpretations of "whisper quiet" "can't hear it at all"... "only hear it when I put my ear to the grill" "sounds like it's cooled passively"
Which makes me think that either
a) people out there are deaf /
or
b) my Mac needs a closer look by a genius
Would really appreciate your opinions.
Thanks,
Tom

hey tom,
you might have the same problem i have. I have the 2.8 octo 2008 mac pro. and it used to be whisper quiet. I was amazed. But recently as in the last few weeks the graphics card fan has become audible. I put in an e sata adapter last week and while inside the mac pro I took a look at the fan to see if it was dusty or visibly distressed. Nope. Couldn't find anything wrong with it. So now i'm just dealing with the noise. Which is too bad cause I really really really don't like fan noise. But the air conditioners on most of the time now so I really can't complain about a little fan noise compared to the ac's grumbling.
but i'd like to know if others are having this problem
thanks,
jayson

  • Terrible Mac Pro graphics glitches and garbling - please help!

Hi all, I have a terrible problem with my early 2008 (8 core) mac pro. Everytime I am editing with final cut, after around 5 minutes, the contents of the screen will start to act very strangely and before I know it, the whole screen is garbled with multicolored shapes and lines (see screenshots below). The system will then completely crash and I will have to hold the power button to shut down. Yesterday, I took it to my local apple store and they put it down to a broken graphics card and fitted a replacement, today its happening again!
Please take a look at the screen shots posted and let me know if any of you have had this problem or if you can help to shed some light on this issue for me.
I'm running an ATI Radeon HD 2600 / snow leopard.

    thanks for reading.

Hi, and welcome to the forums! I actually had the same problem though I don't use pro apps. But how I resolved mine was to de-activate that german based overclocking program called ZDnet overclock utility. For you it maybe a different problem. But if I were you, I'd get rid of the 2600 as its a slow card and lacks OPENCL.
In general, I would just pick up a GT120 or 4870 and get rid of the 2600 as its an older card. It seems the 2600 works better under Leopard than in Snow Leopard.

  • Mac Pro needs a disk repair, please help!

I've been having some strange problems with my early '08 Mac Pro, so I ran Disk Utility, and it says, "This disk needs to be repaired. Stat up your computer with another disk (such as your Mac OS X installation disc), and then use Disk Utility to repair this disk."
Forgive my ignorance, but what is the best and safest way to do this? I'm assuming I will need to back everything up to an external drive? I currently have everything backing up to a Time Capsule every hour, but only the boot drive. Do I need to transfer all four drives?
Most importantly, would could have caused this? I take great care of my machine, I don't even download ****. I use Final Cut Pro every day for work, a little After Effects here and there, and that's it. I don't mess around with my machines.
    Any help is greatly appreciated!
    Thanks.

Take a look at SuperDuper to clone your system and other drives, in addition to TimeMachine or anything else you use (there are 4 ways to slice and dice and clone programs).
Disk Warrior 4.x to repair disk drives and their directory. Maybe TechTool Pro 5 or Drive Genius 3.
Prevention is better than a cure, and Apple First Aid is safe basic but not always strong enough medicine.
Safe Boot at first sign of a problem.

    http://www.macintouch.com/readerreports/harddrives/topic4557.html#d10aug2010
And a small Apple OS volume keep handy used just for repairs and maintenance, with latest versions and utilities, better than relying on whatever your DVD is, it isn't 10.6.5 for one thing.
Sometimes best to clone your system, rebuild/repair the new clone, and use that for new working system (use the original as backup and keep it handy and safe and off line). That can work better than fixing and repairing.
And if you think you have corrupt files, you might want to build a new system too.
Next time there is an OS update, patch, version, or new software / drivers / program - backup and clone. And consider running and testing off one and keep the other handy, so you aren't out of work and unable to use Final Cut etc.

  • Mac Pro (Late 2013) Keeps Crashing Please Help

My new Mac Pro (Late 2013) keeps crashing when I use thunderbolt devices.
My set up is as follows:
    8-Core
    512 SSD
    Dual AMD 700 GPU
    64 GB Ram
It usually occurs when I am using any of the Adobe programs for video editing and rendering. I have check disc utility and found no errors. Needless to say this is getting quite annoying as I use this machine for work and sometimes can't get through anything because it keeps crashing.
    What do I do?

Just happened again. This is what it says:

  • I Am Having Trouble Installing Windows On Mac Pro.... Please Help!

I have gotten as far as installing boot camp and then running windows CD when I start the computer, but all my progress is stopped when I come to a screen durring the setup of XP that says.....
" The following list shows the existing partitions and unpartitioned space on this computer.
Use the up and down arrow keys to select an iteam from the list.
. To set up windows xp on the selected iteam press enter
. To create a partition in the unpartitioned space press, C
. To delete the selected partition, press d
A BOX RIGHT BELOW THE THREE OPTIONS READS.
238473 MB Disk 0 at id 0 on bus 0 on atapi (MBR)
    C: Partition(unknown) 238475MB (238475 free)
So when i choose to press "C" to create a partition the computer dose absolutly nothing.
I thought i might be able to press delete existing partition to get the setup to continue but I am affraid I will loose everything that is on my hardrive right now.
I am completely confused and this problem is keeping me from installing all of my windows applications I use for my recording studio.
If anyone can please help it would be very much appriciated.
    Thank You,
    Zach Moretz

  • Mac pro 8 core, flashing cursor please help

I have a 8 core mac pro, and now when I go to start the system, all I get is a blinking cursor on the upper left hand side. It happened after I took out my 2 nd HD which was just storage and a partition of bootcamp. My main OS X 10.5.4 never left the macpro.
I tried to put the install disk and repair permissions and also repair disk, it did but I still cant boot.

Sounds like it is looking for Windows and you need to reset the startup disk after you zap PRAM.

You can type in your machines serial number here to find out a little more about it, however, it won't tell you what components came from what countries to be assembled into the unit you have.

  • I turned on my new imac for the first time and it is making a loud fan noise please help

I just got a new computer and when I turned it on for the first time it started making a loud fan noise. the noise seems like it is coming from the back speaker. and it does not make the noise on sleep mode.

Connect the iPad to a USB 2.0 port your computer with the cable and iTunes should launch and it will take you through the process step by step.
I assume that your computer meets the requirements and that you have the latest version of iTunes on your computer.

Hi Mr Savage, and a warm welcome to the forums!
Unless we're dealing with some foriegn language I'm not aware of here, then this sort of stuff...
    Machine-cchc k caapaibiiiiet
would likely indicate HW of some kind... EAM, CPU, Mobo, but to elinate orger things like SW, unplug any peripherals you can, boot off the Install disk and see how long it runs off that... several Utilities will show up once you put in the Language.

  • Problem with mac pro 2x2.93 GHZ Dual Core and Mini Display Port

Finally I see the button to create new post!
I would like to explain a problem I have with my mac pro 2x2.93 GHZ Dual Core Intel Xeon processors and the ATI Radeon HD 4870.
I have two 30 "Apple. After buying the new Mac Pro is one of the two monitors, only with the monitor all black, small horizontal lines.
This happens only to the monitor connected to the mini display port... So if you reverse it monitors the problem always moves on the board connected to the Mini Display Port.
Apple has already changed my video card and the adapter but the problem is still there.
Someone can tell me if it is the ATI Radeon HD 4870 that has problems to have two monitors 30 "? Or it could be that the mini display port that is hard to read the two monitors and when the background is black (RGB-255-255-255) makes these lines?
Through the Apple store I then bought a new card (EVGA GeForce GTX 285 "). Unfortunately, after three weeks of waiting is not yet arrived. Proof that I want to do before returning to telephone assistance is whether on a card that has two dual-link DVI ports normal all goes well.
Sorry for the repetition of messages, but my English is very bad. This is the first time I connect to this site support
    Mario
    Message was edited by: marioart

In any case, this system does not support two 30".
I honestly don't think the 4870 with that adapter can support two 30". Just using the adapter itself would not give me the normal resolutions on my 30, where as the DVI port did. Luckily for me the adapter worked fine on my 20".
Truly I don't know why Apple would sell a card and not say just what displays it can power.
So I worked around my problem fine but I chose to get the 285 also. My question to you though is, did Apple make you pay for it? Was it part of a deal with them because the Radeon didn't work? You might want to talk to them about that. That is one expensive card.

  • Mac pro 1,1 fan issues

    Good day Mac Pro users/technicians!!
So, a quick overview of my hardware, then of my problem. My Mac Pro 1,1 has 6 GB of RAM, the latest edition of Snow Leopard, and a brand new ATI Radeon HD 5770 graphics card (formerly an nVidia GeForce GT 8800 for Mac, that "burnt out" a couple months ago from excessive use, I guess).
Through the past 6 months or so (I think it's been that long), every once in awhile, when I attempt to sleep the computer, everything appears to spin down properly, the screen goes dark, and then within a second or two, it wakes itself, and the Mac Pro's primary fan spins up to max speed and STAYS AT MAXIMUM SPEED INDEFINITELY! Functionality remains normal, but I have to "hard" shutdown (not just reboot) the computer to get the fan to stop. The fan NEVER spins up to max speed (except briefly at startup, or sometimes the GPU fan spins up during graphics intensive processes), ever, except when I try to sleep the computer (or when I leave the computer on, and it attempts to sleep itself according to my energy saver preference). This problem used to occur only sometimes. Now it occurs almost everytime the machine is slept. As a consequence, I have to leave it on always, or shut it down completely, otherwise I'll arrive at my office/awake from sleep to the sound of a vacuum cleaner beneath my desk.
I researched Google as best as I could, to find other examples of this problem (as well as this forum/community). There were many people who reported incidences of unexpected fan-spin-up on older G5s, some other 2006 Woodcrests, and 2008 Nehalems, but none that I could find for the same reason or same duration (endless!!) as in my case.
    THINGS I'VE TRIED:
    1. I have tried the SMC reset (shut-down, remove power cord, hold power button for 5 seconds).
    2. I downloaded a temperature monitor application to check for bad heat sensors, and everything appeared OK (which makes some logical sense to me, since I could run the computer undlessly without experiencing this problem unless I try to sleep it -- if a processor core/other heat sensor were bad, I presume that fan would be spinning up whenever the computer is on)
CPU Core temps range from 30-36 deg. C
Memory modules from 54-58 deg. C
The highest reading is from the "Northbridge Heat Sink" which peaks at 65 deg. C
The lowest from the "Ambient Air" sensor at 20 deg. C
    3. Removed all peripheral devices prior to startup, but still able to reproduce problem
Can anyone suggest a course of action, besides something drastic like re-installing the system? Does this sound like some kind of hardware failure? I can always give up on sleeping the machine entirely, though it is quite convenient to be able to leave it on when I've got something running, and trust that it will go to sleep on its own without waking up the neighbors, or burn out it's fans from prolonged usage when I'm away.
    Thanks for your help!
-saucony_jabroni (enthusiastically coddling his 5+ year old computer into the next decade!!)

Thanks again, Hatter for your help. Unfortunately, I'm still experiencing my problem. I don't use a UPS, since I live in a suburban area where we rarely lose power. I DO use a Tributaries brand surge surpressor, with indicator lights that confirm the device is protected and grounded. I'm not sure how I would test that my Mac Pro's PSU unit is faulty.
I attempted to run the Apple Hardware Test, and failed at that as well, for a reason which is off-topic (Maybe this part of the discussion should be moved to another forum). Sometime after installing Snow Leopard, I decided it would be a good idea to set up a firmware password on my Mac Pro, to prevent anyone from tinkering with my system. Unfortunately, doing so prevents booting from the OS X Snow Leopard install DVD. I spent a couple hours last night trying to disable my EFI password temporarily, and was unable to do so. According to Apple's instructions, the user must reboot their computer while depressing the Option key to pull up the EFI password prompt. When I do that, my Mac Pro appears to start the boot process normally (all the ordinary spin-up sounds of hard drives/fans/etc.), but the monitor never illuminates, and the boot process seems to stall. If I press the power button to re-boot, the machine shuts down immediately, without requiring a "hard" reboot. Is it possible that my EFI password prompt DOES come up, but ISN'T being displayed on screen? I have noticed that since I got my new graphics card (the ATI 5770), my screen remains blank right up until the end of the boot process. Maybe the updated OS X boot ROM doesn't initialize the new graphics card early enough in the boot process to view the EFI password entry prompt, or somesuch thing?
I apologize for the high degree of speculation in this latest post. I rattled it off JUST before heading off to work, and probably wasn't as clear about some stuff as I could have been. If you have any ideas why I can't pull up an EFI password prompt, so that I can disable my firmware password temporarily, and run Apple Hardware Test, I'd be curious to know what they are. If you think this post should be adapted for a different forum, I can do that after work today. If you think I should just go ahead and upgrade to a new Mac Pro, I'd be happy for that recommendation as well, but this WHOLE fiasco does seem to trivial in origin for such a drastic move. This machine still runs everything SO well.
    Thanks for all you do!

The device may be formatted for Windows, as NTFS. The format is readable, but not natively writable on a Mac. To write to the device, you must either reformat it (erasing all the contents) or install third-party software to enable write access to NTFS.

There is a version of Firefox 4 available for PPC Macs:
TenFourFox 4.0.1 Firefox 4 For PowerPC Browser Released
Version 4.0.1 of TenFour Fox, FloodGap's port of Firefox 4 for Power PC
Macs that supports both Mac oS X 10.4 and 10.5. has been released.
Mozilla.org dropped support for OS 10.5 after Firefox 3.6 and for Power
PC with the fourth beta of Firefox 4.
TenFourFox uses almost all the same code as Firefox 4 and has nearly all
the same features, including faster JavaScript, WebM video, and HTML 5
and CSS 3 support, as well as new and emerging Web features, but with
the code needed to keep your Power Mac functional and fast. Out of beta
and it's ready for action, versiob 4.0.1 is a performance, security and
stability update incorporating Mozilla's Firefox 4.0.1 plus AltiVec acceler
-ation for WebM and browser graphics, and G5 JavaScript acceleration.
    For more information, visit:
    http://www.floodgap.com/software/tenfourfox/
    Source: from http://www.applelinks.com - posted April 25, 2011)
Now for the intersting bit: TenFourFox, like Firefox, does not support most plug-ins. Unless you are prone to headaches (in which case don't) you can read about that here:
    http://code.google.com/p/tenfourfox/wiki/PluginsNoLongerSupported
    But there is a workaround!
Open TenFourFox and type in the address bar: about:config (no spaces) and click return. This gives you a warning that it might harm the application. Ignore that and click on 'I'll be careful, I promise' and you get the config file that you can edit - with great care.
    Look/search (scroll down) for: tenfourfox.plugins.enabled
Set it to true. (Double click it to toggle it)
Now close TenFourFox, open it again, and Flash will now work, as it now uses the plug-ins that Safari has stored.
With SilverLight, Microsoft attempted to create their own version of what a replacement for Flash could be - but not to universal acclaim. You can read more about it here:
    http://silverlight.net/
So, if you go to any sites that have been designed for this new Silverlight stuff, you can download the plug-in from here (but make certain that you are downloading SilverLight v.1.0 for OS X (10.4.8 upwards) if you are using a PPC Mac, but even this will not work with Safari 4. Version 2 only works with Intel Macs and does work with Safari 4/5. The solution is to download and install the latest version of Flip4Mac, which now includes a Silverlight component:
    http://dynamic.telestream.net/downloads/download-flip4macwmv.htm
But the latest news is that Microsoft will probably abandon Silverlight in favour of HTML5:

The first step in Upgrading... is to Snow Leopard = OS X 10.6.x
It is Not available as a download... It is a Paid Upgrade.
    Do this first...
Check that your Mac meets the System Requirements for Snow Leopard...
    Snow Leopard Tech Specs
    http://support.apple.com/kb/SP575
If so Contact Apple in your Country to Purchase a Snow Leopard Disc...
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HE57
    In the US...
    1-800-MY-APPLE or 1-800-676-2775
After the Successful Install, run Software Update to get the latest updates for Snow Leopard.
Be sure to make a Backup of your Current System Before Upgrading...

  • Unable to find bootcamp in control panel after upgrade to Mac OS X 10.6.8, please help.

Unable to find bootcamp after upgrade tp Mac OS X 10.6.8, please help.

you problem is in OS X (guessing here)
Guess #2: you use an NTFS driver in Mac OS X
    Try OS X forum? No?
When you do reboot into Windows - use Option key for one - and go to Windows Control Panel: Boot Camp: the Startup Disk section to change the default OS is there and works.
It isn't "boot camp" it is Windows. Boot Camp are drivers, control panel, program to partition. What you wanted to see was "Windows" OS to change the default.
Do you 'see' Windows volume on the Desktop as being physically there?
Opened Disk Utility and look at the drives and volumes: Windows volumne is still present.
