Mac Pro 2x2.8 quad will not power on unless I unplug, then plug-in power cable, why?
It is a 2x2.8 Quad Intel Mac pro, 8GB Ram, 8800 GT Video Card (running dual monitors), 10.6.8, Dual Internal HD (150/250), Single external HD (1TB), Dual Internal Burners (DVD - Stock/Blu-Ray - Pioneer), no PCIe cards installed.
I installed a brand new power supply thinking that was my issue, but it still does not power on after an extended period (1/2 hour or so) of being shut-off. It also at times will shut itself off after periods of inactivity even though it is set to never go to sleep, nor are the HD's set to sleep when possible.
One clue to give is that it IS set to restart after power failure. So when I go to press the button to turn the puter on and it is non-responsive, I then unplug and plug the power cable back in to the rear of the puter: it automatically starts-up as if there was a power failure.
The other possible clue I have is that my bluray burner is connected via SATA cable to one of the 2 open SATA connectors on the Motherboard. It only has issues when the hard drives ARE set to sleep when possible. When they are awoken, the drive is no longer listed as present. Meaning I cannot open the drive drawer. ;(
I am thoroughly upset about this.

I have 2 LaCie Thunderbolt 2 5Big drives. I have been using them successfully with my mbp. I just purchased a Mac Pro and plugged them in and they will not mount. I am stumped as how to get the Mac Pro to recognize them
This is the Mac Pro black cylinder, late 2013 model?
Have you tried one at a time? Have you tried different ThunderBolt ports?
What display are you using and what port is it plugged into? You may want to be sure your drives and your displays are not on the same bus.
This article show which ports are on which ThunderBolt Busses:

My 2006 - 2008 Mac Pro running Lion will not play HDV 1080i60 footage in FCP 7. When I open the sequence settings, all HDV codecs are hdv1, hdv2, hdv3, and so forth. However, when I open the project on my other Mac Pro running Snow Leopard and FCP 6, the footage works fine as it does on my newer Imac running Mavericks and FCP 7. I have tried a Quicktime update on the Mac Pro that the footage doesn't work on but it says that I already have the newest version of Quicktime installed. I have also tried reinstalling the Final Cut Pro Studio twice, still no fix. I'm completely out of solutions and need to be able to edit HDV footage on this machine. Any help would be great. Thanks.
there was a recent software update that seemed to screw HDV up. Do some searching here over the last month or 2 and you'll find a bunch of posts and some possible solutions.
Worst case scenario, do as Shane suggests. But might I suggest you take a look at the user tips section of the forum. there are some great tips on how to prevent these sorts of problems by cloning your startup drive, etc. -
Using the New Mac Pro (can) - AE will not let me use Race Traced 3-D
Using the New Mac Pro (can) - AE will not let me use Race Traced 3-D
Hi, I'm using the new Mac Pro
2.7 GHz 12-core Intel Xeon E5
64 GB 1867 MHz DDR3
AMD FirePro D700 6144 MB
OSX 10.9.2
I'm using After Effects 12.2.1.5
When I attempt to invoke the race trace 3D renderer in a comp, I get this error
"After Effects Error: Ray-traced 3D: Out of paged mapped memory for ray tracer. Your project may exceed GPU limits. Try closing other applications. Try updating the CUDA driver. (5070::2)"
My preferences are set to use the CPU for Raytraced 3D since I do not have an Nvidia card.
So, obviously there is an issue here in that it thinks I have an Nvidia card.
I know (or assume I know) the cause for this is that when I set up this machine, I used Apple's migration assistant to move most of my data over from the previous gen Mac Pro which DID have a CUDA card.
So my question is, what files can I delete/reset to cause After Effects to no longer look for CUDA files that do not exist on this machine?
I do not have the CUDA control panel in System Prefs, so THAT did not carry over.
Any ideas would be appreciated, thanks!> I know (or assume I know) the cause for this is that when I set up this machine, I used Apple's migration assistant to move most of my data over from the previous gen Mac Pro which DID have a CUDA card.
Ugh. That causes so many problems.
The first thing to try is deleting the CUDA frameworks from your Mac: Look in /Library/Frameworks for the CUDA.Framework and get rid of it. -

i have an app that i want to download on my mac pro. it will not let me because it was not approved. i know the app is ok. how do i get it downloaded?
What are you referring with not approved? What happens when you try to download it? If you see an error, copy it here. At first, I suspect that Gatekeeper may be the reason why you can't install that app > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5290?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US

Mac Pro Early 2008 will not boot off Win7 Install DVD
Hello,
I am hoping someone out there will have encountered something similar and have some suggestions or ideas, because at this point I can't think of anything else to try.
I have a 2.8 Ghz 8-core Mac Pro (Early 2008) with an Nvidia 8800GT Graphics card. I am running OS 10.6.2, fully patched and updated.
I am attempting to install Windows 7 Ultimate via Boot Camp, and am encountering a rather odd problem.
Once I have launched Boot Camp Assistant it allows me to partition the drive and does so correctly, but when it attempts to reboot off the Windows 7 installation DVD, I encounter a blank grey-white screen similar to that which you normally get on startup but without the Apple logo. This continues for some time (it seems to vary), and then the screen goes dark and the monitor says it is receiving no signal. The fans on the Mac Pro go for a while, then it goes to sleep. I've tried leaving it for a couple hours, no dice.
I've tried both the 32-bit and 64-bit Windows install disks. I had the release candidate for Windows 7 installed previously, and it worked perfectly. I have since tried that same install DVD that I used to install the release candidate, and it encounters the exact same issue. Booting up off the Snow Leopard Install DVD works fine.
I tried doing a clean install of Snow Leopard on a spare drive, booting off that, and then starting from square 1 using Boot Camp Assistant to re-partition that same drive. Same problem. No matter what I do or try, my Mac Pro does not want to boot off this install disc. I have yet to try the disc in another machine to see if it works there, and I will as soon as I can, but the fact that the RC disc worked a few months back and now will not seems to rule out the boot discs as defective. I've also tried both my internal optical drives with no change, and no other discs have any issues.
I've already spent an hour and a half talking to Apple Technical Support, and they seemed stumped, so I'm hoping someone will have a notion. If not, I understand and appreciate you taking the time to read this- I have no idea at this point, and I'm generally a pretty knowledgeable user.
- AndrewThank you for your reply,
Pull all the drives you have other than the one that you will install Windows 7 to.
I think I will try this next.
Don't put Windows 7 on the same drive as OS X, give it its own.
That was initially what I started out doing.
And you don't even need Boot Camp Assistant.
True, but it's what Apple suggests using.
Might also want to try moving the monitor cable to the other card port.
Hmm, I think I'll try that.
Any other PCI cards or devices attached or installed should also be questioned or disconnected.
I've disconnected everything I could.
Always a good idea to start fresh which I assume you are doing (not trying to upgrade over RC etc).
Yes, the drive was empty to start with.
Honestly it seems like the Mac Pro is generally refusing to boot from any Windows disc. Things I've tried since my initial post:
- Loaded Windows 7 Install disc into my room mate's windows PC... loaded up fine, got to install screen
- Tried his OEM copy of Windows Vista 32-bit, same issue
At this point it seems like maybe some kind of firmware issue or some kind or graphics driver issue, but I'm pretty much grasping at straws at this point. It doesn't seem like it's even getting to the point where hard drives or anything matters.
It does recognize that I have a Windows 7 install disc inserted when I use the boot selector/startup disk chooser.
Thanks for the ideas, I'll try those out and see if any of them help,
-Andrew -
Mac Pro 8 Core will not wake up from sleep after install of 10.6
I am so bummed that my computer will not sleep after installing the 10.6 OS. Every time I put the machine to sleep, that works, but when I tap a key to wake the machine, it restarts. I tried resetting the SMC by unplugging everything and restarting but that did not work. I have 8GB of RAM and the machine is set up for photography (Huey color calibrator (using USB), Wacom Intuos 4 Graphics Tablet (using USB)... Could it be all of these device drivers? Help!
Please read this whole message before doing anything. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it. The purpose of this test is to determine whether your problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login. Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode* and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Shut down your computer, wait 30 seconds, and then hold down the shift key while pressing the power button.
When you see the gray Apple logo, release the shift key.
If you are prompted to log in, type your password, and then hold down the shift key again as you click Log in.
*Note: If FileVault is enabled under OS X 10.7 or later, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t boot in safe mode. Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs. The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin. Test while in safe mode. Same problem? After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test. -
I downloaded the numbers app to my mac pro it has been installed but will not let me open. Says it wasn't from an approved supplier. I'm new to macpro so just need some assistance
I'm not sure. Not really great with computers so i just went to the apple store to download. I thought that was what I would need to do. Paid $19.99 for. So I have no clue what I done.

Just got the mac pro and mouse will not connect.
I've googled the heck out of it and can't find anything wrong. At this point I don't know what else to say but, the mouse isn't working. Checked batteries, went through ALL processes, and nothing seems to work. All I get it the green status light blinking or it will say it's connected for 30 secs but doesn't do anything. If anyone else has any other help or info I would appreciate it.

How far is you mouse from the back of your mac pro and is there anything between those two points? Beyond about 3 to 4 feet the MM on a mac pro for many people is problematic. Here's a 24-page thread on this topic:
Poor Bluetooth reception and jerky mouse
Bottom line, use a bluetooth dongle (that what I use -- IOGear GBU421) or wire up an external antenna to the bluetooth card inside your mac pro.
As an experiment you could try doing a smc and pram reset and keep the mouse close to the back of your machine and seeing if it pairs up and stays connected. -
officejet pro 8600. Has been flawless for 2 years. Now it start to feed the paper, but jams as the paper goes around to the printer. It seems like the paper goes straight up instead of curving aroun to the printer head.
Hello @ceebrick , and welcome to the HP Forums, I hope you enjoy your experience!
I see you are running into paper jams. I would love to help.
I would recommend performing a power reset on the printer. Disconnect the power cord from the printer and the power outlet, then wait 60 seconds. After 60 seconds, plug the printer back in. Ensure you plug the printer directly to a wall outlet. Make sure to bypass any sort of surge protector or power bar.
I would then recommend this document on A 'Paper Jam' Message Displays on the Printer.
Good luck and please let me know the results of your troubleshooting steps. Thank you for posting on the HP Forums!

Iphoto 8 on Mac Pro email button will not create "Larger" images!?
When I use the email function (from sharing menu or "email" icon) iPhoto generates the same (small) size file no matter which size I choose in the menu. This happens for all originals regardless of the raw size. This is not an issue for me on my laptop w/iPhoto 6. Anybody??? -Thanks.
Chris
What version of the OS are you using? iPhoto 08 won't run on 10.3 and you're list refers to 10.3.
Later versions of Mail have a setting for sizing pics in the New Message Window:
Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
That's the usual cause of this problem (but not on 10.3).

My Mac Book Pro 15", 2.33 GHz, 3 GB memory - runninfg Mac OS X 10.4.11 WILL NOT SHUT DOWN UNLESS FORCED! HELP!!!
When I use the SHUT DOWN command in the Apple Menu - programs close, the screen goes to a blue screen with a revolving time indicator and then remains that way until I FORCE SHUT DOWN by pressing the power button - then after a it makes the sound the screen goes black.
I searched the forums and tried the suggested fixes: trashing these 2 .plist preferences and reboot.
Reset your Energy Saver preferences.
HD > Library > Preferences > SystemConfiguration > com.apple.PowerManagement.plist
User > Library > Preferences > com.apple.systemuiserver.plist
this worked for a couple of cycles then the problem retuned/
Hey, Mac geniuses and wizards - what is going wrong with my macbooHave you ever waited and let it do it's thing? I was ready to force mine to quit the other day after waiting 2-3 minutes, and all of sudden, it shut down. I restarted it and then shut it down again. This time it was normal.
Try this yet before doing an Archive and Install.
1. Boot from your system CD, run Disk First Aid from your Disk Utility and repair your permissions.
2. Use a utility like Onyx to clean your system cache out, including your kernel cache. The computer will restart slow right after that, but I keep rebooting the computer about 3 times in a row, and I'm back up to speed.

When I use the SHUT DOWN command in the Apple Menu - programs close, the screen goes to a blue screen with a revolving time indicator and then remains that way until I FORCE SHUT DOWN by pressing the power button - then after a it makes the sound the screen goes black. I have restarted the machine several times and run disk doctor from the start up disk - no problems are recognized. The problem started last night. I upgraded to Mac OS 10.4.11 today - hoping that the update would resolve the issue - NO LUCK! I keep trying to get a successful SHUT DOWN from the apple command - However I have not been able to get it to SHUT DOWN without forcing the power button. HELP!"... and run disk doctor from the start up disk"
Please explain that one. Disk Doctor was part of Norton Utilities. NU is not supported by OSX and the faster you get rid of it the better. Boot from your Installer disk and run Repair Disk from Disk Utilities. An optional way of shutting down is holding down control-option-command keys and pressing the eject button. When you are having problems address the problem. Upgrading to a new OS version will not solve the problem.
Wht you should try is running the 10.4.11 intel combo updater here:

Repair Permissions before and after.
