Mac Pro & 30" Cinema Display issue

I've got a weird problem. I've been running two 30" Cinema displays of my first-gen Mac Pro for several years now. I did replace the stock video card with a Radeon 5770 video card earlier this year when the stock card failed, but otherwise no problems with the displays until last week.
I had to temporarily disconnect all peripherals from the Mac Pro to do some work on my desk. After putting everything back together, there were no problems until about a week later when one of the displays went blank. No image, no power light, no nothing. I first suspected that I may not have reconnected that display's cable securly enough, but it checked out OK. Then I thought maybe the cable had developed an internal continuity problem, so I wiggled all leads - especially the power cord at the power brick - but no luck there, either.
My next best guess was that there was a problem with the power brick to which the problem display was connected, so I swapped bricks; the problem stayed with the monitor. This proved that the problem was not the brick
Then I thought that perhaps the dual-link DVI port on the Radeon card to which this particular monitor was connected had gone bad, so I swapped the two monitors at the card. The problem followed the monitor.
At this point I figured the monitor was formally and permanently dead. Then one day, while working with Aperture using the remaining display, the "defective" display came back on! I had created no sudden motion, done no cable wiggling, no nothing. I was just sitting there when - to use one of Steve Jobs's favorite sayings - "boom", it came on. I worked away for several hours with both displays working fine. Then I put the Mac to sleep.
When I returned to the Mac later and woke it up, the problem display was dark yet again. Since then, that display has come and gone several times. No pattern whatsoever.
Has anyone seen this before and, if so, have you found an explanation or, better still, a solution?

Is that the only time (during boot up) and only manifestation (lines in the Apple) of the issue? Have you tried the Flurry screen saver? If it is related to a DVI transmission problem (DVI noise), the Flurry screen saver is an excellent test pattern for revealing that type of problem.

  • MacBook Pro Apple Cinema Display issues

I’m using Photoshop CS6 through a MacBook Pro connected to an Apple Cinema Display. Files on display don’t always appear (work area is just blank, interface still there) and when I go to save, the save dialog box is off top of screen to where I can’t see but a small portion of the dialog box. Can’t pull it onto screen. Anyone else experiencing this?

I have a similar situation.  I have spring 2011 macbook pro 17" (MacBookPro8,3).  I was connecting to an older 30" Cinema Display HD, using the Apple dual-link cable with Mini DVI (Thunderbolt) and USB.  I am running 10.6.8.
I was running this configuration for a while (closed lid/"clamshell"), but it stopped working.
I'm pretty sure this is from the "Security Update" that I just installed.
No amount of reboots or cable jiggering helped.
Except this wierd thing:  if I connect the USB and display to the laptop, the display stays dark.  If i disconnect the USB cable connecting the DISPLAY to the CONVERTER, the screen comes up fine.
I just plug the keyboard into the laptop and it works.  Of course, unplugging the CONVERTER USB from the LAPTOP makes it go away (?!).  So I've lost a USB prot with this little hack.
Try messing the USB connections and see if you get any changes.
I have no idea what to make of this bizarre behaviour, but it is making me crazy not being able to reliably use my desk setup with this nice laptop.
I hope someone can offer more data or help.

  • Macbook Pro w/ Retina Display Issues with Wifi with Bluetooth.

I have a Macbook Pro with Retina Display, 2.3 Ghz model.  I've noticed that while on wifi, when I use a bluetooth mouse or even turn on bluetooth on my computer, the wifi performance severely decreases for a short period of time.  While using a bluetooth mouse the wifi intermittently fails and I need to shut off wifi and turn it back on to correct the issue.
Using the ping utility on terminal I have confirmed this in that when bluetooth is turned on, a large number of packets are lost for about ten seconds.
Has anyone else been experiencing this problem and is this an issue I can correct myself or should I contact Apple?
    Thanks

I have the same issue with my macbook pro with retina display. I have 2 macbook pros. I never would of thought that a bluetooth signal was interfering with both of them. I had a gateway wireless router that only had 2.4 Ghz 802.11 b/g, which is the same frequency of bluetooth. I know that bluetooth bounces from channel to channel, whereas wifi sticks to one constant channel (normally). I have reinstalled my mac twice, thinking that somehow my drivers were corrupted. This was false becuase everytime I reinstalled it did the same thing, Act fine for 5-10 minutes and randomly the internet connection would freeze up all together for 10-20 seconds. I have also tried contacting apple multiple times and they tried to do a smc and pram reset. They also tried to get rid of my chaches in my computer. It all seemed to be fine, and then when I got off the phone it would act us once more.
I have read numerous articles to try and fix the situation; one of them was to try change the location of the network and change the MTU size. No help. I called At&T (my internet provider) and got a new router and that did work for a while. But eventually acted up again. The router was still 2.4 GHz 802.11 b/g. I read this article and found out that my Magic Mouse might be causing the issue. Turns out to be true. Everytime I would browser the internet or browse the itunes store and it would freeze, i would immediatly turn the bluetooth off and what do you know, it works!!! This is a huge dissapointment in apple however. It seems to be only a macbook pro w/ retina display issue. My other macbook pro only acts up when i'm using my newer one (something is wrong with the bluetooth and wifi in the retina for the 2.4 ghz frequencies.
I just got a Airport express, and have not experienced this issue what so ever. This is due to the fact that it is a dual band wireless router. It supports 2.4Ghz and 5 Ghz both at 802.11 a/b/g/n which is a major improvement compared to what I had. I use the 5Ghz frequency and have no issues still.
This is still an issue however because if I want to go out and use anothers persons wifi, I can't control their frequency. So I will still have this issue.

  • Since purchasing my Mac Pro with retina display, I can no longer change the preferences on MP Navigator for Canon MX870. Help?

Since purchasing my Mac Pro with retina display, I can no longer change the preferences on MP Navigator for Canon MX870. I can change them on my old Mac Pro with Lion, but not the new one. I can scan but I can't save it to a folder on my hard drive. I can only let it default to a back up date folder. Tried all sorts of things to change the preferences and folders, nothing worked. Ideas?

To prevent your iPhone from automatically syncing when you plug it in, click on iTunes in the menu bar, then preferences, then "devices", then tick "prevent iPhones, iPad's and iPod's from syncing automatically".
Plug it in, then on the iPhone sync summary screen, click "info" along the top.
Make sure the "sync contacts" option is not ticked. as long as it's not ticked, then it won't sync with your mac's contacts but will still include them in backups.
Also, if you use iCloud, make sure that the iPhone/mac are either not signed into the same account, or that "contacts" is not turned on for both of them

  • Mac Pro 2008 having boot issues...

    Hi,
My Mac Pro is having boot issues,It occasionally gets stuck when I turn it on and the fans go up a bit then I just get a grey screen, sometimes just shutting down and restarting works and sometimes not. I repaired the disc though it says has no issues and repaired permissions. It still does it. if I hold down the option key and boot and select my system drive then it boots fine. Once up and running everything seems fine it wakes from sleep no problem but after a shutdown it sometimes will not boot, it's almost 50 50 chance at this point that it does not boot. I can try booting off and older back up and see if it happens. I do have two video cards and 12 gigs of ram but not sure when this started to happen but it seems to be happening more often lately.
The Mac Pro warranty is over, taking it in for service is not an option at this point. I will install Snow Leopard on a new drive and see if it still happens as a test.

    88 * C is HOT
Hard drives are not much of an issue, even 4, though I don't like now that WD Black tend to run 40-42C.
I recommend everyone run SFC regardless. It should be a REQ'D background app!!!
That and Temperature Monitor  or iStatPro.... but on the whole only use the minimum and no duplication, not even for checking SMART health status. "less is more" or the olde "too many cooks" approach - your system runs better, even faster, and less trouble.
Kicking the fans up 400 rpm makes a significant change in temps. But of course if it is
    Hutch
    Pushed in corer
    Up against wall
    No air flow
    Direct sunlight
.... can't help much or enough

It sounds like it is time to restore from the backups you made just before making the disk changes.
You can re-partition and restore your backups.  If you didn't make backups first (you were warned that it might damage things and to make sure you had a good backup) then you will need to repartition everything and reinstall from scratch...

According to following thread, you don't need to have transformer of AC adapter.

    Lao Bo,
yes, you can locate and copy a file from your HD to a USB key using UNIX commands. If you know the exact name of the file which you’re trying to locate, try this:
    find / -iname filename -print
This command will search your entire internal disk for the particular filename. If you know that it’s within a particular user account, then you can save search time with this variation:
    find /Users/username -iname filename -print
Either variation of this command will print all files found which have the given filename. Presuming that you’re able to identify the correct file, you can copy it to a USB key using the command
    cp -p filename_returned_by_find /Volumes/USB_volume
If you’re not sure which volume name your USB key has, this command will show you what the possibilities are:
    ls /Volumes
Please let me know if you have any trouble with these commands.

  • TS4384 Why my Mac Pro with retina display is become hot while on charging

Why my Mac Pro with retina display is become hot while on charging

Yes. Don't cover the Mac with cases or "skins" or use keyboard covers, since they impede proper heat dissipation. Its entire case serves as a heat sink.
If you are concerned contact AppleCare. A Mac should never become so hot you can't hold it.

  • PowerMac G5 - ATI Radeon Mac Edition + Apple 30" Cinema Display Issues

    Hi everybody,
I just bought a 30" Apple Cinema Display for my (old but good) PowerMac G5 (2x2GHz).
I'm using Leopard 10.5.6. When hooked up to the running system everything ist fine. But i recently had to reinstall Leopard and then I noticed, that after I boot from the DVD the whole screen went black/grey - so no colors at a very low resolution. So I had to do a "blind" install. Does anybody know why this happens? And is a fix availbable? Same thing happens when I boot into a NetInstall oder Netboot Image - the whole screen becomes black/grey as if the OS couldn't find a Color Profile and/or Driver.
As said before - once Leopard is installed everything works fine.
    Thank you for your help.
    Best regards,
    Georg Lechner

Ok, I think I kind of "solved" the problem. The issue has nothing to do with the Apple Cinema Display. I got the chance to hook up another display to that specific PM G5. Happens also with an BenQ TFT.
I think the problem is the installed Radeon 9600 Pro. Gives only black/grey during installation. (even with the 10.5.6 Install Disc)
No big deal so far. Problem solved for me, cause i switched from radeon to a geforce 6800 Ultra DLL.

  • MacBook Pro 2011 Connected to Cinema Display Issues

Started out as occasionally and now more often! When the laptop is plugged into the cinema display it occassionally will turn off or freeze completely. The only solution seems to be restarting the the laptop its self. Any ideas? We've already brough the display in and nothing could be recreated (of course)
    Anyone had these issues?

    {quote}Any way I can just connect it to the monitor then power it on?{quote}
Yes. If you want clamshell mode connect the display, hit the power button, and close the lid. For both displays leave the lid open.

  • Apple Remote Desktop, 2010 Mac Pro, and six displays

Under 10.8, we were able to operate a 2010 Mac Pro (MacPro5,1) with 2 x HD5770 video cards and 6 x LED Cinema Displays (the mini DisplayPort models, two of them via IUSB-powered Atlona DVI Dual-Link-to-mDP adapters, via Apple Remote Desktop.
Under 10.9 (currently 10.9.2), all the displays still work, but ARD is having significant heartburn: if it is able to connect with the ARD agent on the display syste, the display arrangement is incorrect, and no amount of swapping mDP cables, moving the displays around in the Displays System Preference pane, and/or rebooting appears to help. Oh, and the most recent end state, when I finally managed to get the menu bar on one of the displays on the top (physical) row (we have them arranged 2 x 3, in order to display 4096 x 4096 pixel movies of spacecraft data), flummoxed ARD completely --- it simply refused to connect with the display machine at all. (I can ssh into the display system and use a cabled keyboard and mouse as well, but that's not a long-term solution: we have to be able to operate remotely, as we did under 10.8.) Oddly, ARD works OK, if not perfectly every time, with the target system when it's only connected to four or fewer displays (regardless of whether they're connected to mDP ports or via the Atlona devices). The host ARD system is another MacPro5,1 with 24 Gbyte of RAM; the target has 96 Gbyte.
Reading the release notes for ARD 3.7.2, it sounded as though all our issues would be addressed, but alas, it is not so: we're still stuck with ARD trying to but unable to open a "Control" connection to the display system.
Does anyone have any experience, positive or negative, with a similar setup under 10.9 and ARD 3.7.2?
Is there any way to clear all the settings in ARD? I can't find any .plist files with client system-by-system info in them, and I suspect they are (appropriately) encrypted because they can contain passwords, or at least store the hashed passwords in encrypted fields.
Thanks in advance for any clues for the clueless.

  • Restarting MacBook pro with cinema display and lid closed?

Is it possible to restart the macbook pro with its lid closed when it is hooked to an apple 20" cinema display?
I have a 15" macbook pro 2.33GHz and want to be able to use it like a desktop system with just the external display when I am at home.
Also should I worry about heat issues running it with the lid closed sitting on the wood desk top?
    Thanks

Thanks, I just realized that I phrased my question rather badly.
My real problem is how to start my computer without opening up the lid. I have a stand on my desk that the display is on and the macbook slides under when it's closed. Having to unplug it and pull it out every time it is shut down and needs to be started is rather a pain. The button on the side of the display seems to work for sleep/restart/shut down, but it doesn't seem to be able to start the computer once it is shut down; so my question is, is this possible?... am I dreaming?
