Mac Pro 4,1 intermittently horrible dual display performance

I'm running two Apple 20" Cinema Displays on a quad 2.66 MP 4,1. Lion 10.7.5, 8gb ram. Stock NVIDIA GeForce GT 120
I'm getting serious graphic slowdowns but can't determine what circumstances are triggering it. Things will be running fine after starting up for a while, but eventually it all goes down the toile. Just now I watched part of an HD QT movie in a Finder preview window, with the window max'ed, worked great. Then I opened in QT and suddenly it is super choppy, maybe 6-8fps. Went back to try it in Finder again and still stuttering.
I mainly use this MP running Pro Tools and will have the same problem. For the first one to several hours things will run fine, and then at some point it all gets choppy and the UI response is horrible. This will then be true across whatever programs (browser videos, etc).
I'd ask if I just need a better graphics card, but that in and of itself doesn't explain why it will run fine for a while and then suddenly take a nosedive.
Any ideas? I would appreciate any help.

Thanks for the reply.
I have Activity Monitor open all the time to keep an eye on things. When the graphics slowdown happens there is still plenty of free RAM and CPU. I will watch more closely but haven't seen any difference in activity between when graphics are smooth and when they are bogged down.

  • Mac Pro no longer supporting my 2 displays?

I have a 4 year old Mac Pro with the Dual-Core Intel Xeon Processors and 6GB of ram. I seems to have 4 NVIDIA GeForce GT display cards as well. I have been using this system with two 22" Apple cinema displays for 4 years with no problem what-so-ever. the last two times I've rebooted the system, one of my displays doesn't come up - it stays black. The first time I tried changing cables and connections and nothing seemed to work (the one monitor that had been black, stayed black no matter what configuration I tried). I then put all the cables back where they had been originally and it then came back on. I rebooted a few days later and the same thing happened - black screen. No matter what I try it won't start up. Occasionally the little light on the front will come on after I've shut the computer down but then it goes out when I boot up. Can anyone guide me as to what might be the cause. Could the color card(s) be going bad or is it more likely the display itself?

    Contact the vendor.

  • 2006 Mac Pro + NEC 3090 - grey screen not displayed during boot

I have a September '06 Mac Pro 1,1 (Woodcrest variant) hooked up to an NEC 3090 30" LCD monitor, running OS X 10.5.7. Previously, I was using an Eizo S2110W 21" LCD; turning the monitor and computer on would cause the following to be displayed (in order):
    1. Light grey background with dark grey Apple logo with spinning thing.
    2. Solid blue background.
    3. Leopard wallpaper.
    4. Log-in dialogue.
Since using the NEC, the grey screen is not displayed at all: the display stays blank until the blue screen is displayed, and then the Leopard wallpaper and so on. This is using the 2560x1600 native resolution of the display, and has occurred using both 10.5.6 and 10.5.7.
If I change the resolution to 1280x960 and boot, the grey screen is displayed. If I change it to 1600x1200, I get weird corruption on-screen during the period when the grey screen should be displayed; for some reason, this includes part of the desktop wallpaper I was using before I rebooted.
Resetting the non-volatile RAM using Command-Option-P-R works for the very first time I boot the computer, though the grey screen is displayed at very low resolution. If I reboot from the log-in dialogue immediately afterwards, normal behaviour occurs - i.e. the blank screen.
The upshot of all of the above is that if I want to boot into Windows, or install OS X (e.g. when Snow Leopard comes out), I have to remember to boot into my existing OS X installation, change resolution, reboot whilst remembering also to hold down the ALT/Option key. It would be much easier if I could do away with having to change resolution.
I have tried connecting the monitor to a PPC Mac mini at 1600x1200 (it won't go any higher), using Tiger 10.4.11 (not sure of exact version - the latest). At this resolution, the grey screen is displayed.
Using a '08 MacBook Air (first generation) and the supplied DVI adapter, also at 1600x1200, nothing is displayed on the NEC until I get to the log-in screen. This occurs if the NEC is set to be the primary display or the secondary one - the only difference is where the log-in dialogue is displayed. I am not familiar with dual-screen behaviour, so I can't say whether anything is supposed to be displayed or not (i.e. does the grey appear on both displays?).
I have been in touch with NEC Europe support on this issue, who suggested it might have something to do with the 10.5.7 release. I know this not to be the case, as it was occurring prior to 10.5.7 being released.
    Any ideas?

Put more of your hardware listed in your profile.
I looked and don't see you list your graphics card anywhere.
    Graphic card it came with was either X1900 (watch for heat and dust bunnies and clogged vent);
    OEM 7300GT (seems unlikely).
You could have replaced either with 8800GT or ATI 3870.
    Require 10.5.2+ ideally 10.5.6+.
Some problems cropped up with 10.5.7. 10.5.7 doesn't work on some (many) 3rd party displays and stay with 10.5.6 if necessary until it is fixed or resolved.
But you say it happens with 10.5.6 also, and was doing so before 10.5.7? which makes your problem somewhat different or unique.
Zapping PRAM or NVRAM reset obviously shouldn't be needed repeatedly. And your graphics card probably needs to be replaced, or test with another card to rule it out.

  • Mac Pro Mountain Lion Kernel Panic Dual Video Cards

I've been getting constant panics since upgrading to Mountain lion on my 2009 Mac Pro.
Worth noting is I have dual GT 120 Video Cards and dual 30" LCDs.  Every panic seems to be caused by com.apple.NVDAResman
This computer has been rock solid since 2009 and only after "updating" to Mountain Lion has it become unstable.
Was hoping 10.8.1 and 10.8.2 would fix the issued, but neither have.  It's worse than ever.  Crashing every day.
Already reinstalled the OS, tested the RAM, etc.  No change.  Still crashes everyday.
What should I do?  It's really eating into productivity...

    I have the same problem

  • How do I get rid of random screen flicker and black screen when using a late 2013 Mac Pro with a 4k Samsung 55" Display?

I have a new Mac Pro late 2013 and a 55" 4k Samsung display connected using an HDMI cable. For the most part the display is amazing, however, I get occasional screen flicker and black outs. Can anyone help? Could I possibly have a bad video card?

4K displays take more than half the bandwidth of a ThunderBolt Bus. So you may get better results if you are careful to place them on their own Bus. This article has the explanation of which port is using which Bus:

  • 24" iMac... Mac Pro with Viewsonic Monitor or Apple Display.

I'm tossing between the options of getting just a 24" iMac... or getting a Mac Pro and getting an Apple Monitor or Getting a Viewsonic Monitor... Are the Apple displays really worth their price? If ONLY talking displays not specs would I really enjoy the 24" iMac due to it being 24" but at the same time (quick mention of specs) it's not upgradable as much as a Mac Pro... is spending $1,000 on a 23" Apple display worth it? I want at least a 22" display. I can get a Viewsonic 22" for less then $400. What is so great about the Apple 23" display that I would want to buy that instead and spend the extra money?

    figured out what I wanted

  • Our mac pro went to a very faint display and we can't fix it.

Our week old mac book pro suddenly has a very faint display, almost all black and we can't fix it. We've re-started etc.

I assume you have tried the "obvious" stuff, like using the brightness buttons (F1 = dimmer, F2 = brighter) or turning up brightness in system preferences>displays. I'm sure you tried all that, but I just had to say it just in case. Anyway, you may want to try reseting your PMU...
PMU stands for Power Management Unit and it is a chip that controls the backlighting of your display (among other things). To reset your PMU do the following:
    1. If the computer is on, turn it off.
    2. Disconnect the AC Adapter and remove the computer's battery.
    3. Press and hold down the power button for 5 seconds and then release the button.
    4. Reconnect the battery and AC Adapter.
    5. Press the Power button to restart the computer.
Those are the official apple instructions, but I suggest in step 3 you hold the power button down for 10 seconds.
Here is a link that refers to reseting the PMU on a MacBook.

  • Mac Pro + Airport Extreme = Mouse Cursor Chaos Display Issues When Dragging

Graphic display issues (mouse lag and latency displayed on the screen when dragging an object (photo, window, application, document, etc.) from the top 50% of the screen to the bottom 50% of the screen. Mouse cursor starts to display serious lag and latency and loses ability to stay on the object being dragged anywhere below the 50% horizon line of any display.
Mac Pro (any model 2007 to current 2009 production) with Airport Extreme installed.
    Symptoms:
On any object the mouse cursor selects and then drags from anywhere in the upper portion (50%) of the screen display (no matter the display being used) to the bottom portion (50%) of the screen display, shows great lagging and latency as if the cursor is "hanging on for dear life" or as if the processor were running several intense applications and cursor was not responding.
The mouse cursor fails to stay in concert with the object being dragged anywhere in the lower portion of the screen although is fine in the upper portion of the screen.
Issue only presents itself when selecting and dragging an object from bottom to top or top to bottom of the display.
I have deduced that the issue with this "polarity" (i.e. the 50% horizon level of the screen north and south) is due to some magnetic or waveform interference from the Airport Extreme card and most likely due to its position on the motherboard and/or next the the Intel processor. Also could be enhanced by the Bluetooth card which is also located next to this card.
After checking various Mac Pros (at Apple stores, friends and received via Apple Online store) the common denominator is the Airport Extreme Card. When it is NOT present, no issues are present with display cursor lag; when it IS present, all the above apply.
No one at Apple seems to realize this issue or cares about it. Ditto for Genius Bar Apple Employees; seems to be a mystery on par with the Bermuda Triangle (which ironically is also magnetically-polarity related.)
Still waiting for a Apple Product Engineer to contact me and have 3 tickets open with Apple from 3 different Mac Pros on this. Problem first noticed May 2009 although first generation Mac Pro from 2007 also suffered same issues and just now putting the puzzle together on this relationship.
Any others out there notice this as well? Check it out if you have a Mac Pro and Airport Extreme Card installed inside of it.

I also have the same exact problem. I have a i5 iMac Mid 2011 with an upgrade to 10.10 Yosemite connected to an external display. I like you never had this issue with Mavericks. Zoom is so painfully slow now that I had to disable it. My iMac has 12 GB of RAM and even with no apps opened, zoom is killer slow.. makes me want to punch a wall-kinda slow.
I think it's clear to say that something is up with 10.10.. some bug.
    Apple please fix us zoomers

  • Video cards for 2008 Mac Pro with 4 20 inch Cinema Displays

I have an early 2008 Mac Pro Quad Core with 16GB RAM. I run a 4 (20 inch Mac Cinema Display) monitor configuration off of it. one of my video cards just failed. They were never very good at handling FX in FCP anyway. I want to upgrade and get good cards for 2 displays each and if possible, video cards that will facilitate FCP X as well. What should I get?

OS X has drivers in 10.6.5
It is the ROM firmware that makes it work though there is help there too now for PC cards and flashing.
    OWC is over pricing.

  • Anyone using a 12 Core Mac Pro? I have HORRIBLE performance issues .. Help!

After the latest 10.7.4 Mac OS X update I have extremely horrible performance issues with AE ... and they were not so great before the update.
It is still stabilizing ... but an 1:19 clip in SD is taking 12 HOURS TO analyze and stabilize. !!!
The 12 cores are barely being used and this problem has been an issue since I purchased the suite over a year ago.
Does anyone else have problems using AE on their 12 CORE MAC PRO?
REPLY ONLY IF YOU HAVE A 12 CORE MAC PRO PLEASE.
There must be a problem because since the update ... Adobe Encore is PERFECT .. and ALL 12 CORES MAX OUT and the encoding is quick!!
I also have major problems between PP and AE using Dynamic link .. and slow renders in PP.
Everything else works fine .. other apps / other vendors.
    I am calling Adobe today.

    Thank you for your time.
    I am using a 12 Core 2.93 GHZ with 32 GB RAAM and a NVidia GTX 285.
I also have a Areca 1212 PCI RAID Card. ( NOTE: I HAVE A SERIOUS RAID DRIVER PROBLEM NOW. THE RAID IS DISCONNECTED )
    Mac OS X 10.7.4
    Adobe Master Suite 5.5
The Apple "Console" app logs a whole lot of these three Adobe related errors:

Only half of my hyperthreaded processors are active when using AE "Warp Stabilizer". This issue was addressed before in the Forums. There was no solution. I dont' know if it is any better in CS 6.
Also the automatic saving of all linked compositions while using the dynamic link feature bewteen PP and AE causes huge inoperatable waiting times .. unbearable. My guess is that the new "Global Performance Cache " fixes this ... which I consider update to a terrible problem .. but they sell it as a feature ( Ill go into that later.
    Question:
What RAID card are you using?
Do you use the Warp Stabilizer?

  • Need to extend my DVI cable from my Mac pro to my Apple 23" cinema display

I need to extend my existing DVI cable to the maximum allowed distance (without using a repeater) of 3m or 15'. This means I need a 12 foot extension cable Male to Female. I don't need to extend the USB or Firewire ports.
I've searched the threads and seen discussions but am interested in feedback from someone who has actually done the extension and is happy with the outcome.
I understand that the 23" monitor can use a single link cable and that the interface is DVI-I. Anyone tried this?
    Many thanks for the help!!
    Mac Pro, 2.66GHz, 4GB mem, 2TB storage   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

The graphics board has a DVI-I port, but since the Apple display only uses the digital signals, you can use a digital only cable, which might be a bit cheaper. Take a look at the female connector on the cable, though. Make sure it has holes for all the pins on the display's plug. The plug may have the analog pins, even though it doesn't use them.

  • Mac Pro is having intermittent start up issues.  Any ideas?

Mid-2006 mac pro.  About 75% of the time, it will chime, fans will spin, but nothing will display (monitor getting no signal).  The other 25% of the time, everything boots up fine. I tried to boot from an install disk to do the hardware test or try to load the boot loader.  However, when it does boot up and I hold down the appropriate key, it still just loads straight into the login screen.  Any ideas?
I've also noticed 2 of my 2GB memory sticks are showing as 1GB, but even when I take those out, the booting issues persist.

2 of my 2GB memory sticks are showing as 1GB
Those modules are BAD. See if the original Vendor will replace them, or buy new ones.
Maybe the rest is marginal -- you can debug further when you get more RAM.
If Apple System Profiler says any module has a status other than "OK", that means it is accumulating correctable single-bit errors, and should also be replaced soon. If another bit goes bad, you could get a double-bit error, which is intended to cause a kernel panic.

  • Hello people how can i connect mac pro imac as monitor whit mini display

hello people i have aproblem with my comp mac pro with 5770 ati card i want to use  that to let the imac use as monitor oke please respons i am from the duth

Language problem I think -- mac pro is not a monitor.  Do you want to use a monitor on a mac pro as a second monitor on the imac?  Or do you want to network the mac pro with your imac?  Or do you want to use the imac as a second monitor on your mac pro?
