Mac Pro 8 Core 10.6.4 -  12 fast beeps at startup

Yes you read that right.
My Mac Pro 8 core is exhibiting some strange behavior (probably some kind of failure).
At Bootup the mac does its normal startup chime, then my attached speakers make a crackling noise, followed by 12 ( yes twelve) rapid tones, the speakers then crackle again and is followed by another 10 beeps. My MacPro then boots normally. All RAM is accounted for, RAM test in OS X and hardware test report no errors.
I have checked my RAM, re-seated it, did a four finger salute (PRAM) - Still beeping -
I have heard of the MacBoo Pro beeping 9 times, but it sounds nothing like this nor have I been able to find any other posts about it.
Trying to diagnose before I drag this 65Pound beast in for service.
I know what's wrong with 1, 2 ,3 ,4, or 5 beeps at startup

  • Where can i buy mac pro core 12 64GB (8x8GB) memory?

    64GB (8x8GB)
for the mac pro core 12 memory

Yes.  I've bought a lot of stuff from them over the years.  And in fact when I got my mac pro I bought my ram from them too.  They specifically cater to mac needs.  They have a fairly liberal return policy.  For example, I bought a eSATA card which turned out to not work the way I expected with my external enclosure (also bought from OWC).  I returned it for another make of card with no problems.  Reading these and other mac forums you will see a lot of recommendations for OWC.
And yes, I don't know why the url is macsales.com either.  But it should be obvious from that choice of url they really do cater to mac ('er sales).

  • Why is Mac Pro 2.66 only 1.3x faster than 2.7 G5 on CPU intensive stuff?

I produce DVDs so my Compressor DVCam -> MPEG2 encoding is the most time consuming task. Take the MacWorld benchmarks, I was dissappointed the QC 2.66 was a third faster than a DC 2.7 G5 running Compressor.
I would have expected almost 2x as fast, basically halving encoding times. The Mac Pro took 107s vs G5 137s only 1.28x as fast OR put another way jobs complete in 78% of the time taken for the G5.
This is key reason for me to have just sold a G5 DC 2.3...but I'm dissappointed with these early indicators. Would it be reasonable to assume Apple have not optimised Compressor for Intel - surely not at this late stage?

    Terpstar,
I was wondering if you have had a chance to use Motion yet. I have a MBP, and using Zapfino fonts with SciFi Glow crashes my system every time. I would be interested to see if this is the case on other intel based systems. This has led to a failure of my main logic board twice over the last month. See my thread:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=614641&tstart=25
Also, of the two GB ram I have installed, FCP doesn't seem to utilize more than 100MB of RAM. Although the VM size is several GB for the app. I noticed that in order to utilize both cores on my MBP, Airport had to be turned off.
Also, as Ned Snowing was saying, there is no doubt that there are going to be many software bugs that must be sorted out. Especially since this program is being adapted for intel macs, and not re-written.

  • Mac Pro 3,1 (early 2008) RAID card hangs at startup

    Hello,
I have a Mac Pro 2.8Ghz Quad Core (early 2008) with 10GB RAM and 512MB VRAM.
I have noticed that the Mac Pro RAID card hangs at startup for RAID volumes.
It seems to start okay with a single boot drive (have used both WD Raptor 150GB 10K and Seagate 'factory' 320GB 7200rpm as boot drives...)
But the RAID 0 array using two factory 1TB WD 7200rpm is what seems to hang at startup.  I have run Disk Warrior, Disk Utility and RAID Utility and found no major errors...
Any suggestions?  Have already replaced the RAID Card battery with OEM part.
    Thanks!

Say good-bye to the Apple Pro RAID card. It started its life as a $999 card to support SAS/SCSI and/or RAID5.
Then the problems with 2.5TB drives, battery, and does it really do something and add to your system.
I would use SoftRAID and create a 3-drive mirror of 2TB drives instead.
And an SSD for the system.
Seems like those are some very old drives.
I have a lot of the 150GB 10K VR drives, and some 300GB along with older 74GB and a couple of the Raptor series. Loud and while solid I would use for spare boot drives, clone only.
Backup your data, pull the RAID card, and restore to the drives. And clone the system onto a 250GB $109 SSD. $139 buys a 400MB/sec writes and 800MB/sec reads Samsung PCIe-SSD XP941. None of my SCSI 15K drives would come close.

  • I have very fast internet but my mac pro is downloading very slow?Do I have to clean it or something?

How do I improve the download speed of my mac pro? I already have very fast internet and wondering if I should clean my system or what.I have never done anything like this so not sure what to do?

I have the same problem, I hope that someone from apple gets back to us on this.  Has been going on way to long now.  We are not the only ones, but Apple seems to be ignoring this issue.  Just as you have a very fast internet connection, so do I, and my dad's is even faster, and still being told 3 hours for a 1.5 GB dowload.  Should be done in 10-15 min max.

  • In what part of this workflow will Mac Pro actully save us a lot of time?

Although the nMP is really tempting, I'm starting to get second thoughts in terms of how much time it will actually save us......
In our studio, we do a daily, 30 min. 3 camera technews show in 1080p for YouTube.
    Until now, we've been using a 2010 MacPro 8 core 2.4ghz and a MacBook Pro i7 2013.
In our workflow, we record the show in less than an hour. Importing/transcoding is roughly 30 minutes. Multicam editing takes 2-3 hours in Final Cut Pro X. Exporting / encoding takes around 30 minutes. Upload it yet again around 30 minutes.
While waiting for the 6 core nMP D500 we ordered in January, the numbers I see, are starting to worry me.
It seems that the real difference in day-to-day work on the nMP is considerably less that we expected. It's hard to put numbers on expectations, but we were assuming that the nMP with dual GPU would be more than twice as fast as our existing exporting on the old MP and MbP.
The numbers we see in speed tests seems to be all like a few seconds faster here and there likewww.barefeats.com/tube05.html shows us. For us, it doesn't mean much if an export takes 2-4 minutes more or less - it takes longer to go for the toilet or a cup of coffee anyway.
To me it seems that the parts of our workflow, where we can shave of time, is transcoding and encoding. The editing takes the time it takes anyway.
So I'm getting a bit nervous that the investment is not worth it compared to the machines we already have.
I'd really like to hear from you guys that actually tried the nMP - is it all about 14 seconds faster here end 57 seconds faster there or am I missing / misinterpreting the numbers in stuff like Barefeat.com ?
Note: it almost seems to me that faster storage (like a Pegasus) for our existing tools, would give us the same speed boost as the nMP in itself???
Note 2: it almost seems that putting a 7970 gpu (or two) in our MacPro tower instead of the Quadro 4000 we use now, will give the same speedbump as the nMP in itself???

I have the new Mac Pro black cylinder (fully maxxed out) wiht a Pegasus2 R6 array atached ot it via the thunderbolt 2 port.  I also have an early 2008 Mac Pro 8-core machine that until recently I used for video editing in both FCP X and Adobe Premeire Pro CC as well as a high end mid-2012 Macbook Pro with Retina Display..  On the 2008 Mac Pro I used a two disk array in raid 0 for high speed access to video files.  My 2008 Mac Pro was outfitted a couple of years ago with an nVidia GTX285 graphics card and the old system is in good shape and is still being used for some tasks. On the 2012 Macbook Pro with Retina Display I have a six TB raid 0 array.
My experience with the new Mac Pro has been that for any software that makes good use of multiple cores and the powerful Open CL architecture of the AMD W700 graphics cards in the new Mac Pro, this machine is much much faster than my older Mac Pro  A thorough review of the New Mac Pro with many benchmarks in the latest issue of Mac World bears this out with specific numbers comparing the new Mac Pro to the latest Macbook Pro with Retina Display and the latest high end iMac.  In every case the new Mac Pro was significantly faster than those machines for multiple core or graphics intensive tasks.  I have no regrets about purchasing the new Mac Pro and in fact, I love it!
However, the new Mac Pro is designed to excel at specific tasks, e.g., 4K video editing, 3D modeling and animation, editing very large photo files, and motion graphics such as Motion 5.  To fully realize the speed of the new Mac Pro it must be paired with a suitable high speed raid array.  If you do those kinds of activities and if you have the resources to purchase a high speed disk array like the Pegasus2, then you will see that the new Mac Pro is in a league of its own.

  • Updating Mac Pro 1.1 2006 to run 10.8.x?

I have decided to take my old Mac Pro 1.1of sept 2006 as far as I can and even if I can not get a better video card in it  than the ATI 4870 it now has I will retire it to use with Appiture and photoshop.
As seen in the other thread I started this morning I have some problems with the prep work before my extra 16 gig of ram (for a total of 20gig) and 960 gig crucial 500 SSD new boot drive arrive from amazon tomorrow
This is the way it is right now
is there anyway to run OS X 10.8.x on this machine and if so where do I find it here in support? All that is on the AppStore is mavericks which I guess will never run on this antique

I have this question too (0) Reply Categories: Expanding the Mac Pro  Tags: mac, pro, old, updating

Sort of makes it easier (on me, maybe others) when - if possible - there aren't multiple over lapping threads... they do tend to revolve around similar issues.
You would have to look on various other sites and forums for help on how to - to me there is always "why" other than driver support for better graphic cards.
Isolating scratch and editing from t he system would have suggested the 960GB on Sonnet Tempo Pro SSD PCIe card (they only rcommend/support the Pro card due to issues, on the 2006). You could then put an SSD using the ODD SATA ports. Or stock SATA II drive bay. And a pair of 480GB on Sonnet Pro in RAID0 for scratch.
Aperture library should / could also go on the Sonnet Pro card where it benefits the most. you get more and better performance when I/O can be using multiple channels and bus (the new Mac Pro 6,1 though is so fast you can put everything on t he 1TB SSD-PCIe).
    RAM: 4 FBDIMMs 4 x 4GB is ideal, next would be 4 x 4GB plus 4 x 2GB (and 4 x 2GB on Amazon is $50).
You didn't see these FBDIMMs which are dirt cheap for Mac Pro (2 x 4GB $48 set)
    http://www.amazon.com/Komputerbay-PC2-5300F-Buffered-FB-DIMM-Heatspreaders/dp/B0 05HIWD5U/
Sonnet Tempo Pro SSD PCIe on Amazon was around $270 but now back up to $299.
    Allegro $49: http://www.amazon.com/Sonnet-USB2-E-Allegro-5-Port-Express/dp/B000MUSQGS
10.7.5 can work with some GTX 6xx cards I think I've seen Kappy and/or others mention doing so, but without early video out boot screen. I don't feel the need or driven to Mavericks or Mountain Lion, not with the 1,1.
My 1,1 for now: video 16x slot / Sonnet Tempo Pro 8x slot / Sonnet Allegro USB3 4x slot

  • 2 displays for Mac Pro. What do you recommend? What do I need?

I have an older Mac Pro (2007ish - Model Identifier: MacPro1,1) with a NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT graphics card. I currently use an old Apple 22" Cinema Display (1 generation - clear plastic style). Anyway, I want to upgrade my display and switch to a dual monitor setup. So I'm looking for two displays in the 22-24" range. I have some questions about what & how.
First, will my graphics card support two displays? If not, what do I need instead?
Second, what displays do you all recommend? (I'm a graphic & web designer) My budget would be in the range of about $1000 per display.
Lastly, I was really hoping to hold out for the new Apple displays but Apple doesn't seem to be moving very fast in that arena. I've actually been waiting a long time for the upgrade and now the whole mini-display port thing has me wondering what to do.

I'd look at replacing the 7300GT, either ATI 4870 or.... ? before the 7300 bites the dust, and because Apple/ATI driver support for OpenGL and upcoming technology (the 7300GT w/ 256MB is also down bottom rung of ladder).

  • Which SSD for Mac Pro 2006 1,1

    Hey guys,
I've done a lot of research the past couple days and I think I got a decent amount of knowledge but before I purchase I wanted to ask your opinions.
I have a Mac Pro 2006 with the original hard drives in it and I'm looking to speed it up. I see SSDs are now a lot more affordable so I gotta take advantage.
I use my computer for making music and recording but I do hip hop music, not live music or bands so I don't have to record a lot of tracks at once I just want to speed things up. Plus help my software move a little faster when I make beats.
I'm looking to get a SSD as my boot drive and I want around 250gb to be safe so I narrowed it down to these three:
    Intel 730
    http://www.amazon.com/Intel-SERIES-2-5-Inch-Internal-SSDSC2BP240G4R5/dp/B00IF4NG EU/ref=lh_ni_t?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=A2Y5691XAL3WET
    Crucial MX100
    http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00KFAGCWK/ref=ox_sc_act_title_2?ie=UTF8&psc=1& smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER
    Samsung 840 EVO
    http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00E3W1726/ref=gno_cart_title_4?ie=UTF8&psc=1&s mid=A19W1SYPKVVBJO
I read that there are better/faster SSDs out there but can my old 2006 Mac Pro even make use of better/faster drives speed? Are any of the 3 I've picked reliable enough to feel comfortable purchasing?
I still don't understand what TRIM is exactly, can someone help me with that? I'm gonna go look it up now but just wondered about that specifically with these 3 drives...
I'm also going with a Western Digital Caviar Black 2TB drive for the data... Is that overkill for my 2006 machine? Will I even notice a difference in speed with this Caviar Black as opposed to maybe the Blue or Green drive?
I appreciate the time guys! Thanks so much I'm excited to get my Mac Pro moving like my MacBook Pro with its 300gb SSD

An SSD is probably the best bang-4-buck improvement in performance, and today's are far better than 4 years ago (and avoid all the pitfalls of the early SATA III models).
The larger the SSD, the more "pipes" or channels, and you want to aim for 50% free, you need TRIM to be enabled, and yes you will notice.
Then you want to clone the SSD and have a system restore image that you can boot from and to run Disk Utility repair so that "trimming' is performed.
Sometimes you want to research when you buy one and get it delivered and check to see if there are firmware update for it for your Mac.
I could never go back and be satisfied with even a 10K drive though that can come close - almost - but with a lot of chatter noise.
The 2TB drive will do well. Now make sure to backup, use TimeMachine, and invest in drives and software to clone those. You could use 2-3TB WD Green for those depending on how much data and full that 2TB will be.

  • Mac Pro 5,1 Screen Flickering OS X freezes

One of the machines in my department started to act werid...
It's a Mac Pro 5,1 that suddenly starts flickering right at startup and continues to flicker all the way till you hit the desktop. None of the Adobe suite software works, Finder freezes and I must reboot.
Specs are according to this link w/16GB of RAM:
    http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/mac_pro/specs/mac-pro-twelve-core-2.66-mid -2010-westmere-specs.html
Display is a LED Cinema Display 30"
Video Card is ATI Radeon HD 5770
    Anyone else goin thru this?
    Help!

Use safe mode, and it will do one round of "Repair Disk" then come up with minimal extensions loaded. At that point, it's all Apple software. If it flickers then, it has a Hardware problem.
To invoke Safe Mode, hold down the Shift key as you restart. It takes several minutes. The login screen will say "Safe Mode" in RED, and you will need your User_id and password to proceed, even if you normally auto-login.

  • Need a RAID that will work on both new and old Mac Pro

Desperately need to expand my RAID storage, and also not quite ready to buy the new Mac Pro.   Are there any high quality 6TB+ RAID enclosures that will work on both the new and older non-firebolt Mac Pros?  I already have a sh*t load of 2TB 3.5 drives, so I only need an enclosure.
Even when i get the new macpro, I will use the old mac pro as a second station, so i need the RAID to work on both.

Why not go for a eSATA Raid and a cheap eSATA card for old Mac Pro  and get either a Thunderbolt to eSATA or USB 3.0 to eSATA adapter for your new Mac Pro? Thunderbolt to eSATA is faster, of course.
I have a MacPower/Inxtron Hydra 4 x 2 TB eSata for example. I have a eSATA card in my Mac Pro and when I need to use it on my Retina Macbook Pro I use a USB 3.0 to eSATA adapter. Gives me about 240 MBytes/s with Raid 5.
On the eSATAcard it's just a little bit more, like 250/260 MBytes/s.

  • Sudden repetitive Kernel Panic | Mac Pro

    Hi there
Today my Mac Pro has crashed repetitively while booting (during the grey and the blue screen) and after booting out of elementary finder actions (opening windows, moving windows). The crashs occur at the latest 10 minutes after a succesful boot!
What I've done so far (without success):
    - Reset PRAM
    - Reset SCM
    - Booting from the MAC Pro Install CD (crashes also after some time)
    Thanks for your ideas

I started having the same type of kernel panics.  The computer would run for a while then panic.  Removed the hard drive and tested in a different computer.  No Panics.
Mac Pro core 8 dou.  Panic = IA32_MC3_STATUS(0x40d)
Okay, I used common sence and opened the door of the computer and placed an external fan pointing only at the hard drive logic board, vertical board in the computer.  The fan was not able to cool any other part of the computer.  The computer does not panic anymore.  Used a thermal temperature (radio shack) point and click and found the Intel chip which controls the logic board to be operating over it normal temperature range.
Conclusion.  The vertical I/O board requires replacement.
Local apple store does not understand that a computer must be burned in for testing thermal problems.  Standard flow chart testing on the stores part.  Will now have to bring the computer back to the store and demand a replacement board.
I am a hardware engineer and been designing logic boards for over 20 years.  Apple care tech most likely have never seen a computer chip, let alone component level trouble shoot.
You may want to try the same test,   Purchase a box fan from radio shack. aim the fan at the vertical logic board and let the fan run for 5 minutes then power up the computer and see if this fixes the problem, then have the board replaced.

  • New Mac Pro with Thunderbolt and USB  3.0

it is exceedingly frustrating to be waiting with no surety that there will be an upgraded Thunderbolt and USB3.0 Mac Pro in the pipeline. professional doing advanced graphics and video need this and need it now and need for certain a time schedule to plan partial investment in new Equipment. Apple has let is down for two years now and surely the second largest corporation on the planet can afford the R and D for it and certainly it would cost the company nothing to let us in on this schedule. there is no real  competition for this. it is not giving away any advantage but it certainly would give is some ammunition to prevent bean counters from instituting a wholesale move to Dell or others. We need some serious upgrading and we need a heads up on when.

The iMac would require a Magma outboard PCIx box that doubles the cost of the IMac and still does not do the job. that approach is a kludge to try to use an amateur user machine to do what a professional workstation can  do, with The assorted updates I applied to my Mac Pro though it is not as fast at processing as the top of the line iMac it was much more flexible, can run many screens without having to buy new thunderbolt screens and with USB 3 and eSATA cards bypass reasonably the lack of Thunderbolt in the short term but it is a ridiculous and non Mac way to have to run,my work station. And..I am sure I am not alone...Apple better get their act together in the professional market or they will have kissed off many of is in another year.. that would be a huge pity. As well the iMac screen is insufficient and lacks a full Adobe colour palette and its incorrect black levels and inability to be controlled by such tools as a Huey make the screen good only for menus and control panels.  that is why I still use the Mac 30 inch and also a Dell 30 inch screen as they can be calibrated accurately which the iMac can not. the only solution is a new Mac Pro. for the contributor who suggested I contact feedback already regarding  this..I had done that but I figured that they must scan the discussion groups to find out what customers feel about user  situations and the more responses to my comments the better the argument for new hardware.

  • Code on Mac Pro

    Hi All,
So as my question will shortly reveal, I'm not really an expert when it comes to the inner workings of a computer. I recently read a performance review comparing the new mac pros and one of the outcomes was:
"In fact, the 2.8GHz Mac Pro running 64-bit code is faster than the 3.2GHz Mac Pro running 32-bit code!"
My question is, what is the difference between 64-bit code and 32-bit code? Does this have to do with the application you're running or the computer itself, etc?
I'd really appreciate any enlightenment you can bring me.
    Thanks!
    Gustaf

It deals with the tests, and with benchmarks, and applications.
More important, what do YOU plan to use or do on the Mac Pro? Mostly, it just shows that OS X 10.5.x and the Mac Pro is better.
In the past, most thought that, due to larger addresses and code, that 32-bit was "more efficient" and this shows that is not now true. That there is no penalty.
The same is true for some applications on 64-bit Vista as well.
