Mac pro 8 core 3.1 randomly freezes after video card upgrade

Hi,
I just installed an ATI 5770 as a video card upgrade, plugged my new LED cinema display 27 and everything seems to work fine.
Sometimes though, while working with Aperture I noticed the Mac Pro just freezes, although the mouse works, I cannot do anything and I'm forced to press and hold the power button for a reboot.
This happended randomly 5 or 6 times in a couple of weeks and only while working with Aperture.
Any thoughts? Anyone having the same issue?
Thanks for your reply.
Guido

Running Lion or SL?
Tried holding Shift key down and do a safe boot after those freezes.
Use Disk Utility from another boot media to repair your drive.
Do you have enough RAM? is Aperture library on non-boot drive? Does it have 30% or more free? more is better. Same for the boot drive which sholdk be small and 50% free.
Corrupt library. Corrupt preferences (if there were none before, there likely are now after those hard restarts, to data files and to the disk directories).

  • Mac Pro on 10.6.8 freezes after startup

Since updating to 10.6.8 my 2009 MacPro will freeze after startup when opening finder, safari and itunes (so far). No beach ball and ForceQuit doesn't work. Resolved only by a hard shutdown with the off switch and restarting.  Never a problem on restart. This problem seems identical to that described in an archived discussion (after an update to 10.5).  Refer: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2018112?threadID=2018112  .
I have followed those suggestions without success:
-run AHT and no issues found
-run disk utility to verify and repair permissions
-used Rember to check memory and no issues
Grateful for any suggestions; thank you.

It means that a third-party system modification you installed is causing the problem.
Reboot as usual (not in safe mode) if you haven't already done so. Don't launch any of your usual applications. Launch the Terminal application, copy or drag -- do not type -- the line of text below into the window, and press return:
    kextstat -kl | awk ' !/apple/ { print $6 $7 } '
Post the lines of output (if any) that appear below what you just entered (the text, please, not a screenshot.)
Next, do the same thing with this line:
    sudo launchctl list | sed 1d | awk ' !/0x|apple|com\.vix|edu\.|org\./ { print $3 } '
That's one line, not two. You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up. You don't need to post the warning.
    Next, this command:
    launchctl list | sed 1d | awk ' !/0x|apple|edu\.|org\./ { print $3 } '
Again, one line. Finally, one more:
    ls -1 /Library/{InputManagers,StartupItems}
Remember, this is all drag-and-drop or copy-and-paste, whichever you prefer -- no typing, except your password.
    You can then quit Terminal.

  • Found a Mac Pro in the trash, missing harddrive and video card. Can I fix?

I believe this is a Mac Pro G5 (Aluminum casing). It is missing a harddrive and video card. I want to fix it. I plugged it in and turned it on and I see a red light coming from the front, not sure if that means its broken or just missing a videocard/harddrive.
Is there a way I can tell if I will be able to fix this machine before buying parts? When i turn it on, it makes the OSX noise the same as when I turn my laptop on.
    THanks!

Can you fix it? No, I think you should mail it to me
The best way is to see if you can find a cheap video card - craigslist, ebay, borrow from someone else local to you (computer club or users group?)
As for hard drives, since you can boot of an external firewire drive - you have lots of options.
The video card is obviously your biggest issue. Since you apparently get the "Welcome to Mac" startup chime it doesn't sound like their is a major issue with it.
Now, even if you get it working, what are you going to do with it? The G5 was good for it's day, but for the amount of electricity it consumes, it's not the best out there - the new Mini is probably faster than it and consumes a fraction of the power.
Then again, you got it for free and can probably get a video card for under $100 - cheaper than a Mini and if you live in cold climate the extra heat it generates could be a net positive

  • Mac Pro (early 2008-3.0) which replacement video card

I am fairly certain that my Video Card has died. I purchased my Mac Pro in June of 2008 and my config is MAC PRO/3.0_8CX/2X16/880GT/320/2XSD/AP/M/K. Based on other posts I've read, it appears as though Apple does not build Graphic Cards very well. If possible, I'd like to replace the 8800GT (512 MB of GDDR3) with a card with 1GB of memory (but NOT the $1500 unit). But I get very confusing answers when I'm shopping for a card. For example, cards at MacMall listed as "Universal" platform (as opposed to PC) look great, but when I verified with the (sales) rep that it was Mac compatible, I was told no and then she tried to sell me the $1500 unit. Will OSX Leopard or Snow Leopard drive any card that needs PCI Express 2.0 16X? Could somebody suggest a good replacement card? I'm trying to keep it under $500. Thanks in advance for any help.

Whoever writes the hardware requirements should be fired. If it req'd that only the latest logicboards could use it, ATI would be in a world of hurt.
And if you look at Barefeats you will see that bandwidth matters.
They should say what is minimum requirement. And get a background in technical writing, they have graduate programs. And when the specs fit reality people will have some faith and rely on it. As it is, everything has to be with grain of salt or just throw it out and ignore it.
What it does need is a newer set of drivers, and that I'd like to see in a standalone package... included with the card, and maybe even untethered from Snow Leopard so people could buy and use it on Leopard too. Or not have to wait for the next OS update to come out for decent drivers. Some think we'll see firmware update for these cards. New chipset errata. By which time ATI hopes to start showing its 6770, 6870 and 6970s.

  • No Sound After Video Card Upgrade?

I'm hoping somebody can help me.
I have a HP m8070a Media Center desk top computer.
I have recently been converting some video files to use with iTunes and for my PS3 and found that the processor was running at maximum capacity and was taking a long time. To try and improve things I have upgraded the to 2GB of ram from the original 1GB, at the same time I have fitted a new graphics card to try and reduce some of the load from the main processor, originally it was integrated. Since making these changes I now seem to get no sound from the 3.5mm jacks at the back of the unit. I'm only running this cable to the monitor which has in built speakers.
My question is this, is it possible that by removing the original card to fir the new graphics card have I also remove the audio output. I guess I asking was that one board taking care of both audio and video.
    Thanks
    Jon

Well I found a solution for my audio however I am not the original poster so I will let someone else decide if it is solved.  In case somone else runs into this I will post my solution.
Problem 1 was that my Realtek Chip Set did not show up on any administrator settings or hardware options at all.  There was no way to check properties, update driver, select enable or uninstall and reinstall that all the usual fixes would involve.
Eventually my search from Microsofts site led me to the Tech Republic site where I found a tuturial on how to see hidden devices in the Device Manager.  I had already tried the obvious - selecting show hidden devices under options however nothing new appeared.

  • Where can i buy mac pro core 12 64GB (8x8GB) memory?

    64GB (8x8GB)
for the mac pro core 12 memory

Yes.  I've bought a lot of stuff from them over the years.  And in fact when I got my mac pro I bought my ram from them too.  They specifically cater to mac needs.  They have a fairly liberal return policy.  For example, I bought a eSATA card which turned out to not work the way I expected with my external enclosure (also bought from OWC).  I returned it for another make of card with no problems.  Reading these and other mac forums you will see a lot of recommendations for OWC.
And yes, I don't know why the url is macsales.com either.  But it should be obvious from that choice of url they really do cater to mac ('er sales).

  • Mac Pro 3,1 with 5770 problems after sleep with Lion

    Hi,
with 10.7.3 there was a fix for older iMacs with the same issue on an HD 2600 but my mac Pro with the 5770 has the same problem.
Is the Mac Pro user less important for Apple?
My card works fine afer restart. No issues and performance problems (cinebench scores 37fps) but when i sleep my mac and then wake it up all graphic UI things are creepy. There are laggy animations and so on and the speed in Aperture is decreased to a minimum. Cinebench scores after wake up only 16fps.
I bought the card to INCREASE my speed (formerly i have had the HD 2600 built in) and for now, my 249€ is spent for nothing. I dont want to restart my Mac everyday.

So, i have set up a completely new system with all updates to 10.7.4 and the problem already exists.
I am not sure, if this was a problem with Lion or with the ATI 5770
    Not really nice

    See options below:
    Upgrading to Snow Leopard
You can purchase Snow Leopard through the Apple Store: Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard - Apple Store (U.S.). The price is $19.99 plus tax. You will be sent physical media by mail after placing your order.
After you install Snow Leopard you will have to download and install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 to update Snow Leopard to 10.6.8 and give you access to the App Store. Access to the App Store enables you to download Mavericks if your computer meets the requirements.
         Snow Leopard General Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel processor
           2. 1GB of memory
           3. 5GB of available disk space
           4. DVD drive for installation
           5. Some features require a compatible Internet service provider;
               fees may apply.
           6. Some features require Apple’s iCloud services; fees and
               terms apply.
Upgrading from Snow Leopard to Lion or Mavericks
To upgrade to Mavericks you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.8, Lion, or Mountain Lion installed. Purchase and download Mavericks (Free) from the App Store. Sign in using your Apple ID. The file is quite large, over 5 GBs, so allow some time to download. It would be preferable to use Ethernet because it is nearly four times faster than wireless.
         OS X Mavericks- System Requirements
Macs that can be upgraded to OS X Mavericks
             1. iMac (Mid 2007 or newer) — Model Identifier 7,1 or later
             2. MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer) —
                 Model Identifier 5,1 or later
             3. MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             4. MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer) — Model Identifier 2,1 or later
             5. Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             6. Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             7. Xserve (Early 2009) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
To find the model identifier open System Profiler in the Utilities folder. It's displayed in the panel on the right.
    Are my applications compatible?
See App Compatibility Table — RoaringApps.
    Upgrading to Lion
If your computer does not meet the requirements to install Mavericks, it may still meet the requirements to install Lion.
You can purchase Lion at the Online Apple Store. The cost is $19.99 (as it was before) plus tax.  It's a download. You will get an email containing a redemption code that you then use at the Mac App Store to download Lion. Save a copy of that installer to your Downloads folder because the installer deletes itself at the end of the installation.
         Lion System Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7,
               or Xeon processor
           2. 2GB of memory
           3. OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
           4. 7GB of available space
           5. Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply.

  • Video card upgrades for Mac Pro 3.0Ghz quadcore, Video card upgrades for Mac Pro 3.0Ghz quadcore

Looking for advice on Mac Pro with a dying video card. This the early Xeon dual core 3.0Ghz with an ATI Radeon X1900. Maybe the Nvidia Quadro 4500. I know there is s Quadro 4800 which I don't know if will will work with this older Mac Pro. Links and advice is appreciated.

Both cards will work with your computer although that's not stated on Apple's website. I'm using a 5770 in a first generation Mac Pro and it works quite well. I can't get the best performance from it because my MP only has PCI Express 1.0 slots.

H.264 video should be supported by your basic Snow Leopard operating system. The DVCPRO HD family of codecs is part of the Apple "Pro" codecs package which is normally installed as part of a "Pro" video editing suite installer or contemporaneously installed separately as part of one of the newer pro editing apps like FCPX. if you already have one of these pro suites or apps installed or available, then re-install the correct codec package that is missing. If not, you will need to purchase a Pro suite or app to be able to install the required codec package.

We want to be able to use our 30" cinema display from the G4 and was advised in a previous discussion to buy the ATI Radeon 9600 Pro 256MB 8x Dual (DVI/DVI) (AGP) Video Card for PC/Mac. It doesn't seem to be available anywhere. Does anybody know of an alternate video card that's currently available that will get us there? (We had the display running from a G5 that quit / logic board failure).
    Many thanks,
    Philip

The Nvidia 7800GS is a flashed card, runs a 30" with ease.
BruinMacs on Ebay is a great place to get one, you support the guy who wrote the original ROM for these.
He doesn't seem to have any for sale right now, but if you email him, maybe he will list one.
There are also flashed X800s that work on your MDD and can run a 30". They are pricey but will offer dual DVI while the 7800GS is single DVI with VGA for second display.
There are also flashed 6600GT AGP cards which will work, but harder to find.
Any of the above 3 will run circles around a 9600.
