Mac Pro - Boot Fail/Migration
Hello,
I've just purchased a brand new quad core mac pro to replace my old G5. On start-up I used migration to transfer my old hard drive to the new one, which has Lion on it. But now I can not get the new hard drive to boot. I turn on the Mac and the apple start up screen appears and then it goes to black, the hard drive and fans sound like they're working but only output is black.
The Mac can boot from my older hard drive and will boot in safe mode on the new one. I disabled the startup items and repaired the disk permissions but still nothing.
Not sure if this has anything to do with the issue but when booting from the old hard drive the computer will not sleep or restart.
Any ideas?
Many thanks in advance...Reinstalling Lion
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alterhatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion: Select Reinstall Lion and click on the Continue button.
Note: You can also re-download the Lion installer by opening the App Store application. Hold down the OPTION key and click on the Purchases icon in the toolbar. You should now see an active Install button to the right of your Lion purchase entry. There are situations in which this will not work. For example, if you are already booted into the Lion you originally purchased with your Apple ID or if an instance of the Lion installer is located anywhere on your computer. -
Mac Pro, Adobe CS3 and pretty pinwheels: Am I doing something wrong?
I have been a designer happily on PCs for many years but the time had come to migrate the business across to Mac.
On paper, I thought my new rig was the duck's guts. I waited patiently for CS3 (to take advantage of the Intel processor) before I bid the PC a fond farewell but I find the performance om my Mac Pro far from impressive and at least, a minimum, a million miles away from what had been promised by the salesman and advertising.
Forget about the time I spend staring at the little wrist-watch... what is up with that bloody pinwheel?
I am not running dozens of apps at the same time. Just InDesign or Photoshop in less than a minute would keep me happy. Why does it take over 30 seconds for a file to open? Am I expecting too much for a $6k machine to perform at least twice a fast as my 3 year old PC?
I am not very happy. Or is this somehow my fault? I bloody hope so...There isn't a single diagnostic tool that can test for why your system gets a spinning wheel. Adobe has user forums like this and this is really a PS CS3 issue so you might want to look and ask at http://www.adobeforums.com/cgi-bin/webx/.ee6b362/[email protected]@ . A search on "spinning wheel" leads us to http://www.adobeforums.com/cgi-bin/webx/.ee6b362/[email protected]@ where it suggests my first thought also and that would be to have a secondary hard drive available for a scratch disk. Even with 7gb of RAM PS will regularly use a scratch disk as you work, weird but true. You should have few pageouts with 7GB of RAM, but you might also check your Activity Monitor to see if you are getting many pageouts. With 4GB of RAM PSCS2 was causing a huge number of Pageouts and consequently spinning wheels for me. If you have a lot of stuff kept in RAM it's not impossible to generate pageouts enough to cause the system to need to write to disk often and cause that behaviour. If you are using PS alone it should not be an issue. A few hundred pageouts after rebooting and working for an afternoon would not be unusual. Many thousand would indicate a need for even more RAM. A second hard drive for Scratch is nearly a requirement for PSCS3. I've never even run PS with a single HD so I can't say from experience how bad it is but it's one of the first things suggested in terms of performance. Also, do check and see that all your RAM is actually being "seen" and recognized. If you have PS set in its prefs to use 100% of memory you might try backing that off to 80% to free up more memory for the system. It's quite easy for PS to use all 7GB of RAM, starving your Mac. In fact I'd back it off to 70% and if that helps, bring it up (restart) 10% at a time to play around to find the highest setting you can use that doesn't cause a spinning wheel. Some searching at the above (first) URL under the terms optimize or memory usage or beachball etc etc and some of your own posts there should turn up some information that may be more directly helpful. I had the same issue with CS2 and in my case it was a lack of RAM and a need to update to CS3. I doubt that is your issue, but your Pageouts will tell you if you need more RAM, and you definitely can use a second HD for Scratch disk usage.

12 Core Mac Pro client fails to connect to xsan
Dear all, hopefully someone can shed some light on this problem.
We have an xsan system running with clients and MDCs running 10.6.6, XSAN 2.2.1. We have just purchased a new 12 core Mac Pro but we cannot get the machine connected as a client. XSAN admin sees the machine, but fails to write the configuration files on the client. We have tried running the client in 32 and 64 bit modes.
Has anybody else had the same problem? We do have one other 64 bit 8 core Mac Pro (early 2009) client connected without a problem.
Any advice would be greatfully received.
RichardProblem solved. Someone had unplugged the metadata ethernet cable!

Mac pro (2013) fails to see usb 3.0 connected drives in boot selection screen
Hi,
I am using the late MacPro and have three drives attached via an USB 3.0 hub (Anker Uspeed USB 3.0 7 Port Hub).
The hub has a VIA VL812 chipset with the latest firmware update (9081) - I have verified this.
My problem is, when I enter the boot device selection screen (by pressing the alt-key during startup) none of the drives is recognized.
When I plug any drive directly into one of the four USB 3.0 ports of the MacPro, thereby bypassing the hub, it becomes visible and I can use it to boot.
AFTER the boot process, when OS X has finished loading, everything works fine. I have used two of the drives to backup several GBs of data from my main drives (connected via Thunderbolt) with no issues.
Is anybody able to connect drives through a USB 3.0 hub and use them in the boot selection screen? Which USB hub do you have?
Thanks
MartinGot the latest firmware?

Mac Pro - Adobe InDesign CS 2 - Out of Memory
My client has bought 2 new 2.66GHz Quads for design purposes...
Not a good idea by the look of it, as ID is constantly coming up with "Out of Memory" errors and checking the ram usage it's taking about 250Mb with no pages open and gets up to 500-600Mb when opening multiple docs but watching the VM it's up to 3+Gb !!! On my mac here, a Dual 1.25 Ghz G4, I get 150Mb and 550Mb VM only ...
I am aware of it's running under emulation but boy my client is not happy !
AND now my supplier has suggested throwing in another 2Gb of ram per machine as $1K per machine !!!
I hope something is done by Adobe to at least help the situation until CS 3 comes out because the machine is pretty much useless for it's intended purpose...
Mitch
G4 Dual 1.25 GHz-1.5 Gb RAM 200+Gb Storage + Powerbook + Dell Laptop Mac OS X (10.4.8) Plus over 1 TB of storageI might have missed it, but did you specify how much ram the MacPros have installed?
Make sure that there's no problem with the memory, that is if you have 2 gig installed the computer recognizes the 2 gig. I've seen some cases where a user put in 2 gig but because of a bad module only 1 gig was recognized.
Aside from that, rosetta basically doubles the memory requirements for any given application, so if you ran CS2 fine with 2 gig you'll need 4 gig to get the same type of usage.
I use photoshop CS on my Macpro with 2 gig and I don't get out of memory errors. I've come close a few times but I also don't really do too much heavy lifting with photoshop.
I think because of Rosetta, 4 gig is the sweetspot for the macpro. I have two and after working with photoshop and aperture I noticed a lot of swap files created. More so then when I was on a G5 with 2 gig.

Mac Pro, won't install Adobe Reader 11.04 any help out there
After downloading on my Mac Pro, Adobe 11.04 I can't open it. And my Mac isn't indicating the problem? Anybody got ideas?
I am having the same problem with my HPT 4321. After upgrade, wont boot. Shows up everyone as bootable disk (even when holding option at startup) but Mac will not boot off it. I installed a fresh 10.6.8 copy onto a usb drive and HPT drivers work so might just be something to do with the main drive being bootable. To complicate things, the Snow Leopard DVD doesn't have the drivers to see the array so cannot use it for troubleshooting. It will not start in safe mode. Downloaded combo updater to try and re-update but it doesn't let you install it on another drive. HPT driver installer doesn't allow you to install on another drive so also can't re-install driver. Only choice seems to be install OS on new disk and recreate everything from scratch, then SuperDuper back to HPT drives and hope that it was a corruption during the update but not sure that it will boot even after all that work.
Anyone have a working computer with 10.6.8 and booting off a Highpoint RAID card? -

10.5.3 update on Mac Pro stuck on spinning wheel
Greetings,
Updated 10.5.3 yesterday on the Mac Pro, update failed, had to restart, restart is stuck on gray screen with spinning wheel. Did verify disk permission, repair disk permissions, reboot no luck, still the spinning wheel appears. Cannot boot in safe mode.
Any suggestions on what do do other than archive and reinstall?
Thanks for any suggestions!Did verify disk permission, repair disk permissions
Steffi, since you can not boot I will assume you did this from your install DVD under Disk Utility. Go back again and this time run the Disk Repair, if there are any error (red) message run the Repair again. Then check the SMART Status at the bottom of the window, it should say "Verified". Quit DU, reboot, then download the 10.5.3 Combo Update from the Apple site and try it again this time without any peripheral attached.

Has anyone had issues with the new Mac Pro computers and the Adobe Application Manager?
We just purchased a new Mac Pro and transferred everything from the old computer to the new one. Now we are getting Adobe Application Manager errors and it wants us to download Application Manager. That leads us to the Adobe Installer that encounters the following issues
Installer failed to initialize. Please download Adobe Support Advisor to detect the problem. But that doesn't work either.
Anyone run into this?Yep, half of my tracks are coming up displaying an error -69 ( http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=302684 ) and every time I remove a track from the shuffle or update the shuffle, Itunes opens a window displaying the contents of J:\ (obviously the ipod) and hidden folder \iPod_Control.... I'm really irked with this. Been mucking around with the stupid thing for hours now.
Nothing was wrong with it until it suddenly decided to stop working, it wouldn't play tracks and Itunes wouldn't recognise it, hadn't missed a beat up till now. Sifted through the Support site for an answer and getting told I needed to update Itunes and update the Ipod software, ***?? It was working fine before. Me thinks Apple have inserted software in ipod to force users to update to newer version of Itunes. Anyway, ever since updating to the latest Itunes, the Ipod is back in action, but it is trying to tell me that half of my mp3s are corrupt (see error -69), rofl, um no, it's your stupid software Apple, I'm off to by myself a decent MP3 player without the bloat software. -

Did you purchased the Full Perpetual License from Adobe for $149.00?, if so then what has happened is that you probably downloaded the Creative Cloud trial version which has now expired.
The license key for the perpetual version will not be accepted to activate the CC version.
Uninstall the existing Lightroom and then download the one available from the link below. The uninstall process will not affect your Catalog, Preferences or personal files but will just remove the application. Install the new download and you license key will be accepted.

Adobe 11 won't update on either my Mac Book Pro or new Mac Pro (both Mavericks)
Trying to update Adobe After Effects on both my new Mac Pro and older Mac Book Pro. Both running Mavericks 10.9.4.
Oddly, After Effects 11.0 runs on my Mac Book, but won't open at all on the new Mac Pro. When I try to update to 11.0.2, in both cases it says "Update Failed. ....This update does not apply to you."
What else can I try?I am currently also having the same issue with After Effects on my macbook pro and I am trying to install 11.0.4, but I keep getting an error.
My software is student and teacher license, which I got the fall of 2012. This is the only adobe program that will not open on my computer and every time I open adobe bridge and look at update it says the programs are up to date.
I also have tired uninstalling the after effects I currently have on my computer but it won't let me do that either.
Is there anything I can do to fix this problem? -
How do I download a book that is on my Mac pro under adobe digital edition ?
