Mac Pro Alternative 8600 help please

I have a 7300Gt in its original slot.
Seeing that Apple is taking forever to make a 8800GT version for the supposable upgradeable Mac Pro, I wanted to try and see if a PC 8600Gt card would work if placed in one of my spare slots above the 7300GT.
I know it will not work in OSX but under bootcamp and the nvidia 7300GT disabled through Vista will the 8600GT work?
This mean I will have a gaming PC without buying an expensive Mac card

I've got an eVGA e-GeForce 8800 GT Superclocked Edition from Amazon
512-P3-N802-AR in my shopping cart waiting for how to run it in an older Mac Pro.

  • Early 2009 Mac Pro - Kernel Panic help please

I'd really appreciate some help troubleshooting KPs, please.
My machine is a Mac Pro early 2009, 16GB Ram, 2x30" Apple Cinema Displays, secondary display connected via mini display port adaptor.
I'm getting a KP every couple of days and the frequency seems to be increasing.
I think the Panic logs point to internet access as being the source of the problem. In the log that I've posted, an app called Radium is mentioned in the "
BSD process name corresponding to current thread" - Radium is an internet radio app and I was getting KPs before I installed it.
Previous panic logs have mentioned Chrome in place of Radium.
In the "unloaded kexts" com.apple.driver.AppleIntel8254XEthernet makes me this this is possibly internet related.
I have tried using ethernet port B instead of A in case port A was faulty, but the panics still happen. Maybe I could try connecting over wifi next.
I've booted into single user mode (64 bit kernel by holding the 6 and 4 keys during boot) and ran memtest overnight for 5 loops - all Ram checks out fine.
I've zapped PRAM and checked and reseated all RAM, HDs and GPU. Carefully cleaned all internal components of dust.
Any help would be very gratefully received, thanks in advance for any ideas.

The panic reports should  be here:
    /Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports (Mac OS X v10.6)
    according to:
Mac OS X: How to log a kernel panic
There is nothing obviously wrong with the stuff you posted so far, and the two seem to have happened in about the smae place. That increase the risk you have some damage to Mac OS X, and may benefit from a re-Install.

  • Mac Pro or Imac, help please

    Hi,
I currently have the G4 1GHZ Dual w/ 2 gigs of ram, radeon 9800 and the 23" ACD. I'm thinking about upgrading my system so I'm in between the 24" imac (the white one, new for $1649) or the mac pro 2.0GHZ for $200 more (the refurbished from the Apple store). I'll be using CS3, Lightroom and Ilife 08 mostly.
    Best regards

By the sound of it, you can go well with either the newer iMac or a MacPro, but do you really need the extra power? It depends totally on your use of the system. Currently, the 24" iMac configuration should decent with CS3 and iLife. I used the version of iLife before 08 version and it performed at an acceptable rate (using an old eMac).. however, if you are going to switch in between the many applications and is going to really push the limit (having many images open or really BIG images) then you might consider getting a Mac Pro, which is decent at the cost of $200 more. I am aware that there are certain tools that will log your activity (memory usage etc.) is available out there, and I suggest you use the log if ever, to base if you are to get a macpro or an imac..

There's a new driver bundle for OSX 10.6 that you might need to install, the HP link seems to be failing at the moment but there's a version of it here: HP_Installer_Scanjet_v2.4.3_Ph4.dmg
There's a piece on the HP Forum about it here (some folks have problems installing ...)

OS X installers have always been fairly specific, hardware-wise. I haven't read anything reflecting that situation with the Recovery HD, so it may be that the Recovery HD created for the MacBook Pro does not have the necessary drivers for the Mac Pro. Obviously, nothing definitive here, but a possibility.

Intermittent or inconsistent situations as you describe are the most difficult to resolve.  First step you should do is be certain that you have your data backed up.  I suggest that you do this by creating a bootable clone using Carbon Copy Cloner.  The advantage to this is that not only is it a backup but can immediately be used to run your MBP in the event of an internal HHD failure.
The article that I gave you to start your search contains a link to this article:
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3353
Though lengthy, it can resolve most issues if you go through all of the sections.  If you cannot achieve success, then an Apple store genius bar is the last option.
    Ciao.

  • Getting Asus ATI 4870 to work in my Mac Pro. Not working. please help!

I read here on these boards that an ATI 4870 would work in an early model (in my case, 2006) Intel Mac Pro.
I jumped in hastily and bought the Asus branded card: EAH4870
I connected it, and nothing... did not work.
I do not think it is a Mac version of this card, perhaps intended to be used in a windows machine.
    Questions:
    - Do I need to "flash: this card to make it work in my Mac Pro OSX 10.6.3?
    - Are there Mac drivers for this card? I can't find anything anywhere
    - Basically, can I get this card to work, or do I need to PAY the extra $$$$ just to have a "Mac" version of this.
Keep in mind, I am not a techie, I need to do Work, not fiddle with this kind of stuff.. unfortunately, a software package crucial for a job is very finicky and works with only a handful of cards.. The 4870 is one of them.
I do not have dual boot, and no windows machines to "flash" or rework this card.
If you can help me to get this card to work, it would be MOST appreciated!!!

It is not a Mac version. It does not have the required EFI boot ROM needed to work on the Mac. Video drivers are contained in OS X. Either you have to have the card flashed (this is illegal) or buy a Mac version of the card.
If you aren't a "techie" then you don't have the hardware needed to flash the ROM nor know how. Because this site belongs to Apple we cannot help you with something that is illegal.

  • Mac Pro won't start; please help!!

Had Mac Pro for 6 months. All was going well until today. Then I noticed my Mail application was not sounding a chime when mail came in. I repaired permissions and re-started my computer.
Only it did not re-start. I got no start-up chime and after the grey screen appeard, after about 15 seconds a dark blanket transition goes down the screen and a message comes up in several laungauges, English being:
"You must re-start your computer. Either hold down the power button for 8 seconds or press the restart button".
I held the power button in for 8 seconds, then turned it back on again, same thing...
I reset the SMC/Pram thing (whatever it is called) by doing it both ways i.e. unplugging every cable, then plugging in just power/keyboard/mouse, the other way was pressing the switch inside the machine; nothing.
    My machine won't start up.
    Any ideas?

What you're seeing is called a kernel panic. You can read more about what causes these and steps to take on the following web pages:

  • First Generation Mac Pro (in the shop please help)

My first generation Mac Pro is in the shop and I am hoping one of the experts on the list can give me a good reason to have them go beyond what they would normally do. Effectively it is six months out of AppleCare Warranty but I was told that if there was a problem related to an earlier fix they would take care of it.
    The story:
I bought this machine with two 500 GB hard drives with one to run XP on BootCamp. I only intended to run XP software on this machine and only went back to mac due to the "do everything on your Mac that you could do on you PC" campaign. The other drive was for /eventual/ use of OSX.
About a year and a half in I bought two extra gigs of RAM to boost XP 3D software performance. I ran this for about a couple of weeks did not see much change and tried to verify that it was seeing the 4 GB. It was seeing two. I spend a couple of weeks sorting this out with Crucial (who said it was a "special issue") and then I got through to Apple and eventually sent the 2GB back.
Later I found out from a technical forum that I could "flip a switch" and get XP to recognize an extra gig of RAM via some technical settings. I bought the two GB of RAM again, installed it, and tried to run the software switch. After /endless/ go rounds with MAC I was told that the MacPro will do "anything that a PC will do" (which I tried to indicate was not the case) and that I basically had to consult the Forums. At that point I got in touch with Cupertino was told that this was a Firmware issue that could not be fixed.
I was told by the tech that I should just wait until Windows 7 comes out.
So I waited. About eight months ago I set down to upgrade the Office with a new MacBookPro with Windows 7 and I went to upgrade the MacPro with Windows 7. No go. I looked this up on a technical bulletin that described "Late 2006" Mac Pros as not running WIndows 7 (mine is 2007) and spent more time troubleshooting this.
Again after getting through to Cupertino, and having them consult the serial number I am told that this machine will not run Windows 7. Huh? I am stuck with a computer that I bought for apparent durability and endless RAM expansion and I am stuck with only 2GB or RAM which came out of the gate from the factory?
It is now in the shop for an apparent dead power source. It was previously in the shop for a weird, hairy and extremely difficult to troubleshoot (again more time) issue with the display. First it was thought to be the display, then the mother board, then something was loose, then it was the display, then we replaced the Video Card, and eventually we settled on a bad mini DVI converted they had to give me because they busted my Display when it was in for fix and had to give me another one (not complaining). After this was fixed the computer had to go in for a bad CD/DVD drive.
The question is - can I argue in any way that there is something defective with this machine and base the new problem on an old one?
Longer term, I am thinking about trying to sell it for one that will run Windows 7.
Do these things last as long as they /look/ like they should last over the long haul?
    Thanks for any help,
    Jonathan

    Hi. Look.
I do have an IT guy but I have to first be able to explain the problem to him and to do this I have to understand it myself. [BTW let's also not go down the road where I get insulted about my perceived lack of technical skills. This gets very old very quick and if you knew what I did for a living you would feel a little silly talking to me about "a couple of latches" etc. etc.)
I /also/ have to figure out what questions to ask and attempt to get some minimum amount of support from Apple. Even the Tech Supervisor at the Apple store told me two weeks ago he remembered how hard it was to get good information on this issue. The guy /works/ for Apple and he's probably /does/ have some degree in computer science.
The point is I don't have the TIME to address this issue and this will be the sixth or seventh time I have looked into it. I think this machine is not doing what it was advertised to do and I think in the past Apple would have done something for the consumer about it. It doesn't make sense for me to not say so - and it doesn't make sense for us to argue about this. The only reason something is not being done is because there is a very small class of people who are having this problem. If there were a larger class there would be a ton of comical takes on the PC Guy Ads on YouTube and they'd /have/ to do something just for the sake of the bad PR.
Perhaps I can ask you to post the links to the procedure for doing this if I get the time and decide it is worth it? Can you also clarify if this applies to both Win 64 and Win 32?
    Thanks.

  • Virus on mac pro...help/advice needed please.

    Hi all,
I've just run Clamxav scan on my mac pro & it's showing an infected file in my USER directory, named    .rserv    & the infection name is   OSX.Flashback-8
Tried to delete this file in Clamxav & it says its moved it to trash, but when i look in trash its empty! Then, when I rerun the scan it again says the file is still there in my  users  directory.  However I can't find this file using Finder. Clamxav says it's located at:  users/my name/.serv
Can someone please tell me  1 - what is this file?   & 2 - How the **** do i get rid of it?
btw, the 1st time i ran the scan it showed 2 other suspicious files that I sent to trash & then emptied the trash... one was a file called  download.dmg (with the infection name  Adware.OSX   which was in my downloads folder)  & the 2nd file name was called  Tube2FileSetup.exe  (infection name  Trojan.Agent-290842   again this was in my download folder). These no longer appear to be on my system.
    Thanks in advance.

your mac isn't running 10.6.8 and therefore wasn't updated with Apple's latest security patches. And I guess you missed the "memo" and alerts months ago.

  • My Mac Pro is completely dead, please help

Hello guys, I got this one: Apple Mac Pro "Eight Core" 3.0 (2,1) from 2008 (I think) and he is completely dead, I mean not a single beep, fan doesnt spin, just complete silence
I tried remove everything and nothing helps so I suspect power supply (or maybe motherboard?,) so what I can do now? I dont have any other mac, so can I use power supply from PC? local apple service told me, they cant do anything, because its old model (they dont have parts)
so what I can do now? thank you and pardon me my english
    thanks
PS or maybe turn on/off button is dead but I dont think so

Some places will do a free examination or bench test or a small fee, refundable if they do solve or fix it.
Running AHT or ASD might help too

  • My Mac Pro wont power on please help

My mac pro wont start up.
I have already checked the power supply, fuses and have tried to zap the PRAM and changed the internal battery.
The on/off button is completely unresponsive and no light is showing on the monitor

To make progress, you need the fans to come on and the Chime. The conventional way to debug this issue is to remove EVERYTHING that could be drawing down too much power, and try for the chime.
    Remove:
    Graphics card
    any other PCIe cards
    Hard Drives
    DVD Drives
    external devices like USB devices
all but one pair of DIMMs
Then try to power it on. If it chimes, or the power light flashes, it's alive and can be debugged. Add back one item at a time and try for more.

  • Mac Pro 1,1 Help Needed

I’ve been having a few problems with my Mac Pro 1,1 for a while now.  The graphics card appeared to be the cause of the last issue (lines of garbled pixels appearing across the screen), the screen going to black once or twice and not letting me do anything other than a hard reset.
Side note: not long after I bought the machine in 2006 I remember it wouldn’t run The Sims 3 without it having major crashing issues (black screen but sound still playing underneath).
I changed my graphics card about a month ago to the ATI Radeon 5770.  Installation was fine and everything seemed to work ok (although, the second DVI connection doesn’t work with either the Apple Cinema HD display, or my HD monitor, so I have one plugged in to DVI 1 and the other in to the mini display port).  The other problem with this is that (and this is the only game I have to test it on) is that GTA San Andreas still freezes forcing me in to a hard reset situation.  But other video intensive apps (Final Cut Pro for example) works fine.
I used the snow leopard disk to do a disk repair but that found no issues.  I repaired the disk permissions as well.  This appeared to fix nothing.
I few other issues I’ve had recently:
    The Finder crashes.
The computer hangs on a restart / shut down.
USB ports don’t always work on system start.  I have to unplug the mouse and/or the keyboard and plug them back in again to get them to work.  Some of these are on the back of the tower and others are in the back of the monitor.
Disk drive can’t read burned discs.
When ejecting optical disks the icon will either go semi-transparent and then stay that way (this is usually the case, especially after the disc has been in use).
Other times when I try and eject the disc the disc unmounts, but the tray doesn’t open.  Then the disc and the drive itself goes missing from disk utility and can’t be remounted without a hard reset.
The last issue that moved me in to doing a fresh install was Final Cut not working at all.  I’ve since reinstalled but the same problems persist - the optical drive not ejecting (but disappearing from the system leaving me unable to do anything other than a hard reset to get it back).  This causes obvious problems when I’m installing multi-disk systems.
After I restarted, before I did anything else with it, I asked it to run system update which it did and found updates.  I downloaded and installed these and then it restarted.  It shut down fine, and appeared to start up fine.  But then the Finder crashed and while the mouse cursor moved around, the keyboard wouldn’t input any commands and I couldn’t actually click on anything - another hard reset.
I’m starting to get to the end of my tether with my “superior” mac experience.  I know it’s easy to suggest it must be the graphics card causing this, but some of these issues have happened in the past, just not as frequent as now, so I’m hoping there are some ideas that go above the “change graphics card” idea.  Of course, I am open to this being the cause.
I’ve ran Onyx & Rember and both have been successful.
    Any ideas you wonderful lot?
While I imagine the obvious answer is "take it to a repair centre" this isn't an easy option where I live as all official Apple stores (i.e. not premium resellers) are quite a distance.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins and log in as Guest. For instructions, launch the System Preferences application, select Help from the menu bar, and enter “Set up a guest account” (without the quotes) in the search box.
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem(s)?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault in Mac OS X 10.7 or later, then you can’t enable the Guest account. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
    Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Be sure your Mac is shut down.
    Press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem(s)?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of steps 1 and 2.

    things are hanging frequently
When you next have the problem, note the exact time: hour, minute, second.
If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Scroll back to the time you noted above. Select the messages entered from then until the end of the episode, or until they start to repeat, whichever comes first. Copy the messages to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message (command-V).
The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of it useless for solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough. It is never necessary or helpful to post more than about 100 lines. "The more, the better" is not the rule here.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
