Mac Pro always indexing
Is there a reason why my Mac Pro (running Lion 10.7.4) is always indexing the Macintosh HD? Even when it's completed indexing, the next day it'll be indexing it all over again. Has something corrupted that I need to flush out? I use Onyx, Drive Genius once a month or so as I use Logic heavily in the studio so am defragging etc.
Ben
Interestingly it's doing it again just after I Superduper'd my mobile FW audio drive back to my internal audio drive. Doing a search of mdworker - the majority of the lines are to do with my projects drive, not the Mac HD which it's currently Spotlight indexing. I've pasted two Full Report threads below. I'm not an expert at all about thisso before I go in and give you a load more, which of the information below can be discarded?

I got my mac pro in the middle of August. School started the week after. Internet was working perfectly fine at home. But at school, I never had a good connection. Sometimes on the good days I get a connection when I'm sitting at the exact spot in class I always sit at. It's ridiculous and it's frustrating. I invested my money into this laptop and I'm beginning to regret it. I thought it was the school's Internet, but I don't see Internet issues with other PC users. It's most frustrating on registration days and I'm trying to register for my classes before it gets taken, but again... Internet connection issues. It's random. Majority of the time, it doesn't work at all. I've done Network Diagnosis and turning WiFi off then turning it on again. I've done everything I could. I put my money on this laptop and it was a lot of money. I could have bought an 800 dollars laptop and I would have Internet connection anywhere on campus. So, I don't want to continue everyday to regret on buying this laptop every time I try to connect to the Internet at school or Starbucks or anywhere else. How do I fix this? What's the problem ?
At school, I heard this guy had a problem with Internet connections too and he owned a new mac book pro. He said something like Apple messed up on something, but he fixed it. If I knew mac book pro's had these issues I wouldn't have bought it in the first place. It's freezing on me every other day. It's ridiculous. But what concerns me the most is the Internet connection. So someone please tell me what can I do next to prevent the problem? Am I doing something wrong maybe?Hi Kevin,
I'm using an XLR input mic which is connected to the phantom power enabled XLR mic socket on a USB M-Audio M-Track. The M-Track is connected by USB to the Mac Pro - so effectively I've got an M-Audio USB soundcard with a mic input. I've also tried a microphone that is a straight XLR to USB cable (guessing with some soundcard chip buried in the usb plug) but that also yields the same effect of bad latency, intermittent quality, stuttering and repeating and echoing (without the speakers on during record so its not feedback).
The mic works absolutely fine with other recording applications I have on the mac at the moment - albeit non-adobe ones (tested it on the EasyAudioRecorder - and it lives up to its name. it's easy)
I will try with Audition and report back, but sitting here right now I can imagine it would work fine with audition too - it just seems to be the way premiere is set up for recording into the timeline is a bit sketchy. I'm willing to accept it might well be a quirk with the new Mac Pro trashcan - I'm not weighting all the woes on premiere.
Any thoughts or am I out of luck to sit with my fingers crossed for a fix in the next round of updates?
Nathan. -
Mac Pro Always Randomly Freezes
Hi,
We have a Mac Pro (8-Core) 2,1 here at my office that always freezes at random times. I just updated it to Lion not too long ago and since then it freezes for no apparent reason. I've done a fresh install of Lion on a clean hard drive and thought it may have been a faulty hard drive. Then I did another clean install on another hard drive and still have the freezing issue. I used the same Lion install disc on another Mac Pro 2,1 without it freezing. Could it be RAM? Or is it unstable Lion installs? Font conflicts? I've tried everything.... it wasn't doing this when it had Snow Leopard.
When it freezes, I get the spinning color wheel and can't click anything, but I can still hear my internet radio stream going. Wierd.
Any help or insight would be great! Thanks!
-BrandonCould it be RAM?
No. Not in a Mac Pro. It uses Error-Correcting Code RAM.
Runaway applications can shorten battery runtime, affect performance, and increase heat and fan activity -
Why does my Mac Pro always power-up to the recovery partition?
I have a "classic" Mac Pro, I suppose, since it dates from about 2008 - Xeon dual core, though with 10G of RAM.
I installed Lion and everything works fine, except for one thing: whenever I power-up, I start up in the recovery partition. That doesn't actually bother me a lot, but it prevents my wife from using the computer if it's powered off.Pram reset did the trick. Oddly, I've had my Pro for several years now and this is the first time I remember having to zap the PRAM.
My son (an Apple tech) was nearby today and told me that PRAM Reset (command-option-P-R all held down just before the chime and released after the chime) is the canonical solution for odd boot behavior.
Regarding other suggestions: yes, I did indeed open the Startup Disk selection in the System Preferences. It provided exactly one choice: my legitimate boot disk. Yes, I clicked on it anyway, even though it was the one that was selected already. No, it didn't make a difference.
Perhaps if I had had a choice of bootable disks I might have been able to switch between them and make the problem go away. But I only had one bootable disk to choose from.
I don't use Boot Camp, I run Windows through VMWare. -
Mac pro always imports CD Track 7 as "7 Memory" regardless...
Hi, as the heading says, no matter what CD I put in any drive in my system, even burned discs which should come up as "1 Audio Track" etc have Track 7 listed as "7 Memory".
I do a lot of editing for Ballet groups etc. so sometime in the past this "7 Memory" has been correct.
So somewhere my system has been corrupted.
Does anybody have any idea where I should look to find this Preference which I assume it is? I have looked in the Library to no avail and also the Users Library but I can't find anything obviously amiss.
Any help hugely appreciated! Cheers. Thanks Johnb - I tried trashing the itunes prefs to no avail, likewise repaired permissions to no avail. Discs are spotless if that's what you mean.
However I tried trashing the Finder plist and Voila!
Fixed!
So thanks for the reply, it certainly got me on the right track to finding the problem.
Cheers! -

I installed LION on my mac pro 2008 and it's alway's pop with " there was a problem connecting to the server " Time Capsule" .How can i remove this popup. My Time machine is working fine and also rename it with less than 7 karakters. But the popup keeps on coming with the old name.
I have a BT Infinity router plugged into the Time Capsule, not sure where the radio settings are?
They are able to use the network settings of the TC i.e. they can connect to the internet via the wifi through the TC but when they try and connect to the AirPort Disk this is where it is not allowing a connection.
I don;t have the drive shared out at all at the moment, is this necessary? How do I do this if so?
I have attached the screen shots of all the settings.
Thanks again for your help. -
After upgrading to Mavericks on my Mac Pro, mail always requires that I type in my password when launching. How do I change that?
If your password is accepted, and Mail connects to the account, but you're prompted for the password repeatedly, take each of the following steps that you haven't already tried. Note: these steps don't apply if the server rejects the password. That's a different problem.
Step 1
When prompted for the password, check the box marked Remember this password in my keychain.
Step 2
Check that the keychain is working.
Step 3
Check that the default keychain is unlocked. -
Newest 8-core Mac Pro won't always wake from sleep.
Recently I have been experiencing my Mac Pro not always waking up from sleep. It is a 2.4 Ghz 8-Core running Snow Leopard. I am using a USB keyboard and a Bluetooth mouse. I am noticing that it is becoming more frequent and it's starting to worry me with how expensive this computer is. If I had to guess, I would guess that it happens more often after long sleep durations. The only way to get it to turn on is by holding down the power to turn it off and then doing a reset. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Can any Mac gurus specify what is going wrong? -
I'm not sure how to post a message. I hope this might interest someone. The situation; 3 floors,I am having trouble with an an Airport Extreme, 802.11n on the top floor and a Mac Pro 3.1 on the bottom floor. Not always but often it has trouble seeing the Airport and making a connection. I have an older Airport Express, would it help to install it? would it work best if it was installed in the same room? should it be installed half way in between? Get another Extreme? The Mac Book Pro on the middle floor can see 11 networks in the neighbourhood if that might be causing a problem or would if I installed the Express. Thank for your consideration.
Thanks for your time ... I appologize for the font and colour, I compossed the question in pages and failed to notice the font colour as grey ... there are a variety of computers of various ages so I think it is using a setting that allows both 5G and 2.4 ... the connection to the Airport is thru a cable modem and cable does run throuhout the house ... maybe those hard wires would be a place to look at ... do you think that putting the 'Express' on the second floor might help ... thanks again ...

Mac Pro 3.1 status light is always on
Hello
I have a Mac Pro 3.1
Since last week I have a problem, and could't yet found the solution. Sometimes (most of the times, actually) the Mac Pro doesn't boot and just stops after the chime (just as it was powered off). But what I found strange is that the white status light is always on (not blinking, always on) from the moment I connect the power strip.
I've run multiple times the Apple Service Diagnostic tests (running then again at this moment) and there´s absolutely no error reported.
I've changed memory, video card slot position, everything I could think off, but still haven't found a solution.
Thank you for your helpI will try the UPS as soon as I can get one working (it seems my trusted Ellipse Max 1500 isn't working anymore). But how can it explain the fact that the light always stays on?
Another thing. In one of the last reboots to seemed that the Mac Pro couldn't find the startup disk. Past the chine nothing happened. After I started again with the alt key pressed and chooses the correct disk it appears to be working (the light problem keeps the same).
So, maybe there's a problem with the SMC, could it be? Yes, I did the SMS (and PRAM) reset, but the problem keeps the same -
hi, my mac book pro, spotlight indexing process not compleate last 1 week. what should i do.. my machine speed are very poor. pls help
System Preference/Spotlight/Privacy
drag your disk into the list, excluding it temproraily from the indexing procedure.
Restart your mac, and open the Privacy page again, click the disk and the minus button to re-incorporate it into the procedure and restart the indexing.
Or just try your luck in Disk Utility/First Aid/Repair Disk Permission first.
See if these help -
Mac Pro whenever restart is always connceted - cannot turn it OFF
Hi,
I've always configured one the LOCATION in the Network Preferences to OFF (no ports selected).
It has been working fine with all of ours computers and OSX version since G3...
It works fine with our PBooks, G5 2.0 DP, but not with the brand new Mac Pro!
I've tried to delete preferences in System Configuration, re-set the Network Location, but when I restart or boot the Mac Pro it's always connected to our Isp Lan, not to internet by the way.
The Macs in our Studio are all connected to a Netgear Gigabit Switcher (lovely!), so I can see which is connected or not through the leds. We are connected to a Lan not to DSL 'cause is a fiber optic Isp.
Looking through this Discussion and Goggle I couldn't find a solution, anyone knows one?
Last but not least: I remember that I had a similar problem years ago when we bought a new G4, but I can't remember which solution we found to solve it...ouch!
Thank you in advance!Hi BDaqua,
sorry for the late replay. No, I think is related to DNS responder or some other config file that is ran at boot time.
I'm pretty sure that has to do with it, because when i restart in the OFF location, the switcher leds show that the ethernet port is still connected on booting. And once logged, to make active the OFF location I have to switch to another location and then back to OFF one, at this point the ethernet port is really off, no leds on the port. But when I do that turnaround, in-between the led switch off then on then off definitively.
So it looks that when the MacPro boot doesn't care of the location that was set at shutdown. But it turns ON the ethernet ports ( I've tried with both 1 &2 ) anyway.
In fact if I use a Network utility or a Terminal command to see the configuration it tells that both are inactive but the one is connected has an IP address.
I was thinking to post a new topic just to ask to MacPro owners if they use an OFF Location and if it behaves differntly from mine. -
