Mac Pro and disk configuration for DV

I have a MacPro with a 2 500gb and a 250gb internal disks. OSX is installed on one of the 500gb drives, I have the other 500 for data, like finalcut content, and the 250 for bootcamp (windows xp). I also have a 500gb WD mybook premium that I use for time machine.
I would like to add some more space dedicated to video.
I was thinking about was a WD mybook studio pro II 1TB using a stripe set. Here is where it gets messy in my opinion. Should I use FW800, or should I use eSata?
My next problem: I have 1TB of space on a nice fast raid0, but no redundancy. What should I do now? I can get another 1TB mybook (fw400) and do nightly backups, but with what? I would like to use time machine, but from what I read, you can only use 1 disk with it. I could use the software that comes on the mybook to do the backup, looks like it would work, but not all that pretty.
What I was thinking, get a 1TB fw drive and use it for time machine and back up the 500gb OS drive, and the 500gb data drive. I could get another 1tb drive and backup the mybook studio pro II nightly. That way I will never loose more than 1 days work.
The other thing I was thinking was use 2 mybook studio pro 2's and do a software raid1 and mirror them. So i would basicly have a raid 0+1 (mirrored stripeset). the stripes would be hardware raid, and the mirror would be software. From what I hear, software raid doesnt perform that well. Also, what interfaces would I use. I only have 1 fw800 port on the back, and would rather not plug 1 in the back, and 1 in the front. and it would be bad to use 1 fw800 and 1 fw400.
just trying to get the best balance between performace, reliability, and cost.
Any help would be great!
Thanks!
Brian

I would go easy on WD MyBook. Why the fondness for vendor? check out threads and reports on hard drives like MacIntouch.

Put to rest the idea of mirroring. One drive today can saturate FW800. Mirrors are not as useful as backup and its built-in? Another: Apple dropped 0+1 for good reason in Leopard. But you heard software RAID...? Apple RAID is fine, done right.
Invest in a single 4-channel PCIe SATA controller and then you can use SATA drives, and do more than all these other FW drives, cables, all of which run on the single FW bus. Load your 500GB drives there and replace with newer drives (OS X, scratch, data).

TB drives: http://www.barefeats.com/hard94.html
Add WinClone and/or Windows backup software to backup to one of your existing FW drives, may as well use them for something.
TimeMachine will by default backup all drives. I don't like that. You can have multiple TM sets, nothing to stop you. Definitely don't rely on one backup set or strategy. Definitely use SuperDuper to keep working backups of your system too. You can backup to sparse disk images.
You have PCI Express to add disk controllers, you don't need to rely on USB or Firewire. And if you want to add FW/USB, less trouble and better Mac support with Oxford based OWC Mercury cases.

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
First of all, check that you are looking for your USB drive in the correct place. To do it, first connect the USB drive. Then, open a Finder window (press the left icon of Dock) and choose your USB drive on the Finder sidebar, under "Devices". Finally, just copy the documents you need to the internal disk.
If you want to show the USB drive in Desktop, open Finder menu (on the menu bar) > Preferences > General, and tick "External drives"

I am going to load windows 7 via Boot Camp for other reasns. After that is done, and even with an external Blu Ray player, is it still not possible to play Blu ray movies?
    Thanks for your consideration.....

I just replaced the hard drive for my Mac Pro, and I am trying to restore what is on my Time Capsule, but it wont connect, and only is giving me the pinwheel of death. What do i do?

You will need to boot from some alternate boot device to accomplish this, if you did not initialize the drive before installing it.
If you have another Mac, you may be able to use FireWire target disk mode.
If your MacBook has a DVD reader and you have a Mac OS X Installer/Utilities DVD, such as the one that shipped with it, you can boot from that DVD, answer only the "what Language" question, and wait a quarter minute for the MenuBar to be drawn. Then examine the Utilities menu or the Installer menu and Find Disk Utility.

  • I installed mountain lion os on my mac book pro and now Word for Mac and my Fluenz Spanish programs do not work. How can I go back to my original OS? Thanks

I installed Mountain Lion OS on my Mac Book Pro and now WORD for Mac and Fluenz Spanish program do not work. How do I reinstall original OS and scrap ML?
    Thanks

My previous answer still stands: Restore from your backup taken before you upgaded to Mountain Lion. For example, a Time Machine backup, a Carbon Copy Cloner clone, or a commercial backup service. Not the disk that came with your computer (which is how I read "OS back up disk").
If you reinstall the original OS from the disk that came with your computer, it will wipe out everything on your computer. (The installer won't install an older OS over a newer one, so you'll have to wipe the disk first.) Then you'll need to restore your data from your backup and reinstall applications like Word.

If you use Windows program to partition the Hard Drive, the Apple partition gets destroyed.
Windows does not understand it is a guest on your Mac, and throws garabge wherever it pleases.

  • What is better Mac Mini or Mac Pro and 4K 40" screen or iMac 5K for work with Exel

I am working on Macbook pro retina for around 16 hours a day,  it is ok but the screen is to small. I am opening about 25 - 30 EXCEL windows, 20 - 25 safari windows at the same time. Excel windows are small, they only show 40 rows and S column   Now I am considering buying  iMac 5k ( but the screen is only 27", however a very high resolution but I think that fonts and digits displayed may be too small ). I am also considering Mac Mini or Pro with 40" 4K TV ( 4k computer monitors are 27 - 31" , so better idea would be purchasing iMac 5k ) . The problem is that 40 - 42" TV don't have Display Port ( I can't find  it anywhere )
Please help me to choose what would suit my needs better. I need large screen to work comfortably with an Excel sheets.  What is better? Mac Mini or Mac Pro and 4K 40" screen or iMac 5K for work with Excel ?. The other problem I have is that when I spend  16 hours at work with retina macbook , my eyes are ok. Using the  30'' Dell screen 2560/1440 my eyes are tired after 2 hours.
Thanks for your help on advance
    Best regards
    David

Currently you can only get 4 K at 30 Hz via HDMI. Some users have reported jerky curser movement because of the 30 Hz.
I would go for the 5K iMac. You can add a second screen at 4K.
    FaceTime HD camera
Simultaneously supports full native resolution on the built-in display and up to 3840 by 2160 pixels on an external display
Support for extended desktop and video mirroring modes
    The Mac Mini supports:
Support for up to two displays at 2560 by 1600 pixels, both at millions of colors
    Thunderbolt digital video output
    Native Mini DisplayPort output
DVI output using Mini DisplayPort to DVI Adapter (sold separately)
VGA output using Mini DisplayPort to VGA Adapter (sold separately)
Dual-link DVI output using Mini DisplayPort to Dual-Link DVI Adapter (sold separately)
    HDMI video output
Support for 1080p resolution at up to 60Hz
Support for 3840-by-2160 resolution at 30Hz
Support for 4096-by-2160 resolution at 24Hz
The 2013 Mac Pro can use three and more displays:
Mac Pro (Late 2013): Using multiple displays - Apple Support
I would go for multiple screens

  • Universal power pack for Mac air, Mac pro and ipad

Have an 10 hour flight comming up    Would like to purchase universal power pack for Mac air Mac pro and ipad

I do not take Intergrative Nutrition, but I have some advice for choosing your device.  Your choice of device should be based upon what you will use your device for currently and in the future.
If you are just using your device to use the internet and do light activities (smal typing, etc.) then the MacBook Air is a better choice.  You should note that the Air has no Superdrive(for your DVD's CD's etc.) so you will have to put out more money to get one.  It can also be slow because of the Flash Memory.
If you are going to be doing more "heavy" computing (photo editing, sound editing, lots of multitasking, large file sizes etc) then I would suggest getting the MacBook Pro.
If you prefer tablets, or tablet style reading then the iPad will be better for you.  You should keep in mind that ther are restrictions on the files that you can view or work with on the iPad.
Overall, I prefer the MacBook Pro because of its versatility, durability and capabilities to do multiple file types.  If you have any more questions, feel free to drop by your local Apple Store or Apple Authorize Retailer.  They will be happy to help you!

  • Which video card to buy for Mac Pro and AE CS3

I am about to purchase a new Mac Pro and am curious which video card to buy - particularly when it comes to rendering speed.
Apple offers the ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT with 256MB of GDDR3 as a standard option, with the NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT with 512MB of GDDR3 as a $150 BTO option.
I primarily use AE CS3 using adaptive resolution in lieu of Open GL. The projects are very 3d intensive. My initial thought is that the NVIDIA card has more VRAM and would be a better pick - but would my $$$ be better off toward more RAM? Does using CS4 make a difference?
Any thoughts would be appreciated. And yes, I have searched the forums but have not found anything definitive.

Personally, I'd buy more RAM. The standard display card supplied with the Mac Pro will have perfectly good specs for AE and Prem Pro.
Yes, CS4 should render faster than CS3.

  • What is the best mac cleaner and anti virus for mac pro.

what is the best mac cleaner and anti virus for mac pro.

OS X already includes everything it needs to protect itself from viruses and malware. Keep it updated with software updates from Apple.
A much better question is "how should I protect my Mac":
Never install any product that claims to "speed up", "clean up", "optimize", or "accelerate" your Mac. Without exception, they will do the opposite.
Never install pirated or "cracked" software, software obtained from dubious websites, or other questionable sources. Illegally obtained software is almost certain to contain malware.
Don’t supply your password in response to a popup window requesting it, unless you know what it is and the reason your credentials are required.
Don’t open email attachments from email addresses that you do not recognize, or click links contained in an email:
Most of these are scams that direct you to fraudulent sites that attempt to convince you to disclose personal information.
Such "phishing" attempts are the 21st century equivalent of a social exploit that has existed since the dawn of civilization. Don’t fall for it.
Apple will never ask you to reveal personal information in an email. If you receive an unexpected email from Apple saying your account will be closed unless you take immediate action, just ignore it. If your iTunes or App Store account becomes disabled for valid reasons, you will know when you try to buy something or log in to this support site, and are unable to.
Don’t install browser extensions unless you understand their purpose. Go to the Safari menu > Preferences > Extensions. If you see any extensions that you do not recognize or understand, simply click the Uninstall button and they will be gone.
Don’t install Java unless you are certain that you need it:
Java, a non-Apple product, is a potential vector for malware. If you are required to use Java, be mindful of that possibility.
Disable Java in Safari > Preferences > Security.
Despite its name JavaScript is unrelated to Java. No malware can infect your Mac through JavaScript. It’s OK to leave it enabled.
Block browser popups: Safari menu > Preferences > Security > and check "Block popup windows":
Popup windows are useful and required for some websites, but popups have devolved to become a common means to deliver targeted advertising that you probably do not want.
Popups themselves cannot infect your Mac, but many contain resource-hungry code that will slow down Internet browsing.
If you ever see a popup indicating it detected registry errors, that your Mac is infected with some ick, or that you won some prize, it is 100% fraudulent. Ignore it.
Ignore hyperventilating popular media outlets that thrive by promoting fear and discord with entertainment products arrogantly presented as "news". Learn what real threats actually exist and how to arm yourself against them:
The most serious threat to your data security is phishing. To date, most of these attempts have been pathetic and are easily recognized, but that is likely to change in the future as criminals become more clever.
OS X viruses do not exist, but intentionally malicious or poorly written code, created by either nefarious or inept individuals, is nothing new.
Never install something without first knowing what it is, what it does, how it works, and how to get rid of it when you don’t want it any more.
If you elect to use "anti-virus" software, familiarize yourself with its limitations and potential to cause adverse effects, and apply the principle immediately preceding this one.
Most such utilities will only slow down and destabilize your Mac while they look for viruses that do not exist, conveying no benefit whatsoever - other than to make you "feel good" about security, when you should actually be exercising sound judgment, derived from accurate knowledge, based on verifiable facts.
Do install updates from Apple as they become available. No one knows more about Macs and how to protect them than the company that builds them.
Summary: Use common sense and caution when you use your Mac, just like you would in any social context. There is no product, utility, or magic talisman that can protect you from all the evils of mankind.

I have moved from a G5 Powermac to an Intel Mac Pro and selectively porting over items from a backup hard drive.
How can I access and use documents and drawings created on the PC based computer ?

Clarisworks, you need Appleworks, which will only work with Mac OS X10.6.8 or earlier.  See this tip if you must go newer.  Mac Pros with newer hardware configuration than July 20, 2011 can't use Mac OS X 10.6.8 or earlier without this tip and then it would be Mac OS X Server.  I'm not sure if the new black Mac Pro supports that configuration or not.
iPhoto, there is an iPhoto for all versions of Mac OS X.
iTunes, there is an iTunes for all versions of Mac OS X.  Note with iTunes versions 11 and later, which are needed for syncing with iOS 7 or or later, you will lose coverflow, if you liked that feature.  Sadly you can't run an older version of iTunes from within Mac OS X 10.9 or later.
Sketchup: http://help.sketchup.com/en/article/60107 shows the versions that will work with intermediate Mac OS X versions, and this shows the latest version: http://help.sketchup.com/en/article/36208 be sure to click on the operating system you choose to use.
GIF - Viewing GIFs Apple's Preview can do that.  Editing them, I like http://www.lemkesoft.com/ Graphicconverter.
DMG is able to be opened by all versions of Mac OS X.  This are just "disk images" which store programs on a virtual disk that will open when double clicked.    Frequently you'll find the installer of the said program inside.  To find out if the program itself is compatible with 10.7 through 10.9, see http://www.roaringapps.com/
