Mac Pro and FCP - Very Unstable

I just purchased the Mac Pro and installed FCP 5.1.2. I have a dual 2.6 Ghz with 2.5 TB external eSATA Raid (using the Sonnet E4P card), Kona LHe Card and 3 GB of RAM.
1. FCP, Quicktime and Shake each unexpectedly quits on playback of video within a few minutes of opening and
2. Video in FCP and Quicktime has blocky (colored lego) defects and corruption.
I suspect this may be the RAID or Quicktime, but this is about the most unstable FCP setup I have ever experienced since FCP 1.0.
Any suggestions? is it my RAID controller card, Quicktime, FCP or something else?
Thanks.

Just found this for Dan - http://www.amug.org/amug-web/html/amug/reviews/articles/sonnet/e4p/
Scroll down a bit - they recommend using it in an appropriate slot - something else to check ....
oh sorry - that's for a G5

Have you installed the Serial ATA Firmware Updates/Drivers from Sonnet - specific for the MacPro?
Looks like they're all still in beta ...

  • I don't have clean ideas about Mac Pro and FCP in RT

Hi, I hope you can clarify my ideas about editing in RT.
I will purchase a HDV camera and I'd like to work in RT with FCP and Mac Pro.
Many people tell me I don't need any additional card and even I don't need RAID. Can you tell me if I can work in RT with FCP, Mac Pro and 4GIGs RAM only?
    thanks

When I have to export the film from Timeline will I have to do rendering?
RT editing in FCP, for the most part simply means that there are certain things you can see happen in the timeline without rendering... a certain number of simultaneous streams or tracks, certain transitions/effects/titles etc.
How much you can do RT is determined by a number of factors... the speed/power of your computer and drives, the video format your cutting... you'll get less cutting HD than you will cutting HDV or DV25. With the type of timeline you're describing you shouldn't have any trouble seeing what you're cutting RT.
However, regardless of how much you see RT, any effects, transitions etc. have to be rendered in order to output or export. In other words, even with DV footage, unless you've got a straight cut timeline with no titles or effects, you're always looking at at least some render time to get things finished. And as David has said, HDV also requires conforming (the whole timeline, not just effects) which, depending on the length of your show can take some time.

  • Which monitor for mac pro and FCP

    Hi,
I'm using a quad core mac pro with a Dell 2407wfp. In this setup I mainly do FCP editing. The monitor is 4 years old and I like to replace it for a larger one. I recently saw a setup with a Samsung P2770HD full hd and a tv tuner on board. Will this be good enough for FCP editing and reviewing HD content?
    TIA

Will this be good enough for FCP editing and reviewing HD content?
Probably not - but I have no experience with that monitor.
Not what you asked but why not keep the Dell for displaying FCP timeline, bins, etc and purchase a quality HDTV and the means to feed it a hd signal (eg AJA Kona series, various Blackmagic cards, Matrox MXO series, etc) for viewing output?

  • Mac Pro and FCP/Motion Crashing

    Hi,
My new Mac Pro is fast BUT crashes a lot. It crashed during a render and also in complicated motion projects. I am wondering if I should upgrade my RAM or add another graphics card to fix this -- I cannot do both at this time. My old computer never crashed (G4). I finally went to one monitor and that help a bit but I still had crashes. I have 2 GB of RAM and RadeonX1900 graphic card.
It works just fine on all other programs.
Mac Pro 2 x 3 Ghz Duel Core Intel   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   2 GB RAM

    What format are you editing?
    4x3 NSTC
How many drives in the machine and how much free space on each one?
One internal drive 108 GB left. One external G-raid 12 GB left.
    Where is the media stored?
Scratch disks on on the G-raid hard drive and render files etc are on internal drive, still photos and motion files on main drive.
Is the RAM from Apple and is it all the same size (i.e. all 512mb modules)?
All the RAM came from Apple and Apple installed it. It is all 512 MB
    Any 3rd party filters applied?
Yes, a few of the clips have Nattress filters. I have the 24P turned off. This takes a long time to render on the old machine too.
Does it crash on a particular project or using a particular effect?
Motion crashes the most with projects that have many layers and using the particle generator. This motion project my old G4 could never handle.
Does it crash at the same place on a timeline or randomly? Randomly.
Have you deleted your FCP preferences using FCP Attic or Rescue?
I can do this but does not solve my motion crashes.
so on and so forth ...
again, it did seem to help when I went to one monitor. I am using 2 View Sonic 19 inch monitors.
I am still under my 30 Apple help and I am worried if others have the same set-up and no crashes.

  • Mac Pro and FCP Studio

    Hi,
Will the New Mac Pro ( 3 GHz) be faster than my Quad 2,5 for normal rendering in FCP Studio ?
    thanks

    Should be.
They suggest that it is up to 1.4x faster encoding Mpeg2 (from DV)

I bought a new Mac Pro and migrated my FCP from my old one. But the new old won't accept my product serial number. Help!

Was the FCS on your old machine an upgrade? You will need to enter your original, full version serial first, and then you will be prompted for the upgrade serial number.
    Hope this helps.

  • New Mac Pro and now no FLV Export option in FCP

    Hi Folks,
I have a new MAc PRo and just loaded final cut studio 2 and flash 8 onto it.. I know have no option in the quicktime conversion setting to export to FLV?
Please any help would be huge at this point...
Oh.. I loaded After Effects 7 to the new Mac PRo and I get the Export to FLV option from AE so what is the deal?

Hi Todd, I bet you upgraded from a PPC machine.
The real problem here is that Flash 8 is/was not a universal binary (i.e. an app that is supported on both the PPC and the Intel Macs).
So the included "FLV Exporter" QuickTime component does not show up in the export dialog even if it's installed as it just does not get loaded.
    (Should be in "NameOfSystemHD/Library/QuickTime").
If you update to Flash 9/CS3 you get a universal binary app and QT exporter component and it will work again on your (Intel) Mac Pro.
Btw., the Flash support that was in QuickTime had nothing to do with export - especially not with FLV - but with playback of Flash content.
Addionally, AE 7 isn't a universal binary either, so you will suffer some pretty serious performance losses.
    Best regards, Oliver

My CC2014 is very unstable since I have updated my Adobe Creative Cloud Software from CC to CC 2014, and I've been an adobe user since 1999 and I switched from FCP to Premiere in 2012. Everything has been great until the last two upgrades. What is going on???
My Premiere Pro has been very unstable. I can't keep it running for more than an hour before I receive the Premiere Pro has encountered a serious error and must shut down. I can't get anything done. I've gone from working 40 hours a week to 60 hours a week since I upgraded. This is extremely counter productive. Please HELP!!!!
I am experiencing difficulty with Illustrator a lot too, but not as important just wondering if somehow related.

  • IPhone not showing in iTunes on Mac Pro, and BLOWS keyboard on two Macs!

I have an extremely annoying issue since I upgraded my original iPhone to 2.0 and 2.1:
    - I've got an iPhone (8GB, first gen) with 2.1 firmware
    - Mac Pro early 2008
    - Aluminium Keyboard (standard)
    - iTunes 8
Whenever I attach my iPhone, the keyboard goes dead. Totally. Only way to re-animate it is by unplugging the iPhone and wait 5 seconds, then re-plug the keyboard. This is on a newly created Admin account on the Mac Pro and the iPhone that has been through a total factory reset back to 2.1 today...
And a newly re-installed iTunes 8 on (all computers).
Note my iPhone is no longer recognized in iPhoto or Aperture or iTunes on the Mac Pro either.
However, the iPhone works fine on a Mac Book Pro (newest model).
It does show up and sync on an iMac Intel 2.0 GHy, but kicks the Aluminum keyboard on that machine as well...
    What is going on??
I will have to double-post this in iTunes and iPhone section, apologies in advance, but this is just too ridiculous... someone must have an answer to this. At least an explanation. I have been through every single USB port on my Mac Pro.
Apple "Genius" in Apple Store Regent Street recommended an archive & install of Leopard 10.5.x. Yeah right. I am working on this machine, I have not got time for that silly idea...
The thing is, this all worked fine before the 2.0/2.1 update... but why is the bl oo dy thing working on a new MacBook Pro and not on my Mac Pro?

// Apologies for cross-posting this in three threads, but as it - at least for myself - provided an instant solution to a nagging problem, it should be alright. //
Alrighty, here we go - today I FINALLY made successful progress WITHOUT having to re-install my entire system...
I figured it was very weird that my iPod Mini would work fine on my Mac Pro USB ports, as all other small devices did too, but that the iPhone (first gen) would simply not trigger any reaction whatsoever.
The iPhone could be ruled out from being the funny one as it was instantly recognized on Macs in the Apple Shop. As I really did not feel I had time to archive & install and whatnot on my work machine, and the fact that I always thought my Mac Pro should have a few more (USB) ports, I researched suitable internal USB expansion boards.
After reading up about it, I decided to get this one: *Sonnet Allegro Express USB* - this card installs in seconds - you simply sht down your Mac Pro, pull the mains plug, take off the side door, unscrew the two thumbscrews holding the blind plates towards the back, take out one of the blinds, push the card in carefully but all the way in, re-attach the blind-holding plate and fire up your machine.
I plugged my regular iPhone dock into the back, pushed in my iPhone, and was instantly greeted by the short humming of the iPhone! Starting iTunes, the iPhone popped up in the side bar again - my precious iPhone is back alive and happy to sync contents!
Very happy to finally have found a solution.
If anyone tries this, I really hope it works as good for you as it did for me - if it doesn't, then for about $50 you've at least got those extra four USB ports on the back of your Mac Pro you always wanted
    Good luck!

  • What is better Mac Mini or Mac Pro and 4K 40" screen or iMac 5K for work with Exel

I am working on Macbook pro retina for around 16 hours a day,  it is ok but the screen is to small. I am opening about 25 - 30 EXCEL windows, 20 - 25 safari windows at the same time. Excel windows are small, they only show 40 rows and S column   Now I am considering buying  iMac 5k ( but the screen is only 27", however a very high resolution but I think that fonts and digits displayed may be too small ). I am also considering Mac Mini or Pro with 40" 4K TV ( 4k computer monitors are 27 - 31" , so better idea would be purchasing iMac 5k ) . The problem is that 40 - 42" TV don't have Display Port ( I can't find  it anywhere )
Please help me to choose what would suit my needs better. I need large screen to work comfortably with an Excel sheets.  What is better? Mac Mini or Mac Pro and 4K 40" screen or iMac 5K for work with Excel ?. The other problem I have is that when I spend  16 hours at work with retina macbook , my eyes are ok. Using the  30'' Dell screen 2560/1440 my eyes are tired after 2 hours.
Thanks for your help on advance
    Best regards
    David

Currently you can only get 4 K at 30 Hz via HDMI. Some users have reported jerky curser movement because of the 30 Hz.
I would go for the 5K iMac. You can add a second screen at 4K.
    FaceTime HD camera
Simultaneously supports full native resolution on the built-in display and up to 3840 by 2160 pixels on an external display
Support for extended desktop and video mirroring modes
    The Mac Mini supports:
Support for up to two displays at 2560 by 1600 pixels, both at millions of colors
    Thunderbolt digital video output
    Native Mini DisplayPort output
DVI output using Mini DisplayPort to DVI Adapter (sold separately)
VGA output using Mini DisplayPort to VGA Adapter (sold separately)
Dual-link DVI output using Mini DisplayPort to Dual-Link DVI Adapter (sold separately)
    HDMI video output
Support for 1080p resolution at up to 60Hz
Support for 3840-by-2160 resolution at 30Hz
Support for 4096-by-2160 resolution at 24Hz
The 2013 Mac Pro can use three and more displays:
Mac Pro (Late 2013): Using multiple displays - Apple Support
I would go for multiple screens

  • Mac Pro and Video Card. Which???

Hey Guys, Im planning on buying a Mac Pro and if I was not sparing any expense to get the latest & greatest, then would buying the "NVIDIA Quadro FX 4500 512MB, Stereo 3D (2 x dual-link DVI)" ensure the best high end card I can buy for my mac? Is there a big difference between that and the "ATI Radeon X1900 XT 512MB" or the "NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT 256MB" ?? Not sure which to choose. Thanks

The Quadro is the fastest card you can buy.
Between the Quadro and the X1900, there isn't much of a difference performance wise, but the Quadro is very slightly faster then the X1900 in certain tasks (gaming, in particular).
Between the X1900 and the 7300, there's no real comparison. The 7300 is a baseline card. It will do everything the X1900 does- but not as fast and your frames per second (FPS) will suffer significantly in things where that matters (gaming, again).
If you aren't tied to the Quadro and you want something with any reasonable amount of speed to go with the capabilities of the rest of the machine (Quad Xeon cores), then go with the X1900. It's cheaper, and about the same speed as the Quadro.
The 7300 is, well, going to be slow compared to the X1900/Quadro.

  • Imac vs mac pro for FCP?

    Hello folks,
Well, my G5 apparently needs a new logic board. I could cry, or be happy at the excuse to get a new computer... I chose the latter!
Bottom line, what is the consensus regarding imac vs mac pro.
I will be using FCP a lot, that's what I do for a living. However, I rarely run other applications at the same time. Occassionally LiveType or Photoshop, but that's about it. No Motion, no After Effects, etc.
I feel that an imac will suffice nicely and that the mac pro is overkill in both cost and amount of computer. It's like getting an Indy car and driving 40 MPH!
    Thoughts? Thank you.
    Eric P

hmmm, interesting. Of course the mac pro would be better, no doubt. But for my purposes I still wonder if it's worth the cost.
As for Kevan D's inquirey for more info, yes I work with FCP for a living, at least 50% of my work week maybe more is editing. However, silly little ol' weddings have become the vast majority of my work and they will continue to be for at least a few more years I believe. In that time I do not see HD being a factor in my area. So for the forseeable future I expect to be working soley with SD. That bit of info may change some of your minds to thinking that an imac will suffice.
I admit, that's my hope because I would have to take out a loan for the mac pro, and again, I'm just not certain it's worth it for my purposes. On the other hand, I didn't ask the question so that I could hear what I "wanted", I do want honest opinions from other professionals like yourselves. If the experience is that an imac just isn't worth it then so be it.
As far as expandability (is that anything like drinkability??), I understand that, but again for my purposes I suspect that by the time I need to expand to HD or to using the full benefits of a mac pro, a new computer (and equipment) will be in the order anyway. Does that make sense?
    Thanks again,
    Eric

  • Mac Pro and Gaming

Just wondering if the MAC PRO is a very good gaming computer? I have one game installed, Tiger Woods and have issues. The latest, the game tries to start every time I log on to the computer.
Perhaps a setting isn't correct. The game doesn't have any options to set like that.
In addition, wonder if I would be better off with an Apple Display instead of the NEC?
    Any comments are welcome>>

The game is not somehow one of the login items is it?
As for the display I have an Apple display, might not be any better than the NEC I don't know, but it sure as **** has the feel good factor. (and the look good factor).
