Mac Pro and FireWire M-Audio 1814

Can some one please HELP ME configure my Mac System with my Fire Wire?
all I need help with is hooking up the Speakers to the fire wire then the fire wire to the Mac so I can get the sound Out.
many thanks in advance..

Dear Mr. Zarzowski, I'll do what I can. first try going to m-audio.com and under 'support' type in the model # of your thing...ah, I see. the M-audio has ts/trs connectors which use headphone style plugs (the big ones) so, depending on what connector your speakers have, you'd need a speaker connector to 1/4 inch adapter
as for the fireWire, you'd have to go into audio, then input/output, select the FireWire unit, then maybe output over Firewire. Also go into midi setup and make sure that's setup correctly, ie the output and input should be FireWire and not line in/line out. I presume the unit comes with software, ie a FireWire control panel? You might want to install that, too

  • Mac pro and motu PCIe audio card with a 2408mkIII

    mac pro and motu PCIe
i recently upgraded to the mac pro from a G5 and now my motu 2408 mkIII sound card does not work.
i installed the motu PCIe 424 pci card from motu and installed the latest UB drivers, followed the instructions to the letter, repeated numerous times in every pci e slot with only temporary luck. it worked briefly and then when the computer slept i lost the connection with the interface and have not been able to regain it.. yes i re-installed to the letter again. the pcie card is seen by the computer but it cannot seen the external rack mounted 2408 via the audiowire that connects it. yes i tried other cables. the unit worked fine on my G5.
i have heard of others with the same problem after updating the firmware to SMC 1.7. my mac pro came with the latest firmware.

To my surprise I had five software updates waiting for me. Among them Pro App update, two of them, and this SMC update. After I updated my MOTU PCI-424 audio interface no longer works. Tried installing MOTU drivers again, still nothing. It can't communicate with its audio interfaces. So right now, this amazing update from Apple stopped me from working, and I am on a pretty tight deadline. I hope I'll find a solution ASAP

  • Mac Pro and Firewire busses

In preparation for purchase of a Mac Pro, I tried to determine how many firewire bussess are available for the 4 ports. According to one piece of information, there is only one bus(!!) supporting all four ports.
    http://developer.apple.com/documentation/HardwareDrivers/Conceptual/HWTechFireWire/Articles/FireWimplementation.html
This setup could result in some real issues when using multiple FW devices, such as cameras, etc.
Have any Mac Pro users noticed problems in using multiple FW devices or is the configuration very different than previous Mac towers?
G4 Powermac Dual   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   1G RAM,200GB scratch int, FCPS, LaCie Ext FW DL DVDburner

In most cases, the 'single firewire bus problem' is overstated. Many of us use not only the built-in single bus connected to cameras, decks and drives, but are also multiplying those ports though hubs.
I have a FW400 hub with about five drives and a camera and deck hanging off it, some looped through, and a FW800 hub with another five drives hanging off it, again, some looped through. The other FW ports are also full. I've never had a single hiccup with this setup on both a Dual G4 and Quad G5, and I would expect the MacPro to be no different. (I am exclusively talking about DV-rez work - I certainly would not expect this setup to handle higher rez material).
Specifically, it seems Canon cameras do not play well with single-bus setups - there have definitely been problems reported with them.

If you have a little Firewire adaptor, everything should work fine. It does on my system.

  • Universal Audio Card in mac pro and logic together.

Hello, I am thinking on purchasing an Universal Audio Card and using it with a mac pro and logic studio.
Does anyone know if they have used or know about using a Universal Audio card (UAD-2 Nevana 32), or any other universal audio card?
Can you use this card with a mac pro and logic studio and does it have any latency issues? And can you use the Universal's mixor and logic's mixor at the same time, Or do you just use the plug ins on the UAD when using logic. Also it looks like it comes with one input on the card, so how do you plug in multiple guitars and bass and piano, or do you just run one input in and buy a input device for it (what would I need to buy for that?), Thanks so much.
    Lou.

Universal's documentation says that it is compatible with Logic 7 and Logic 8. You might want to ask in the Logic forums about hands-on experiences. Universal also has their own forums where you'll probably be more likely to get useful information from experienced users:

  • How much real world difference would there be between the 1600MHz memory of a 4,1 Mac Pro and the 800MHz memory of a 3,1 Mac Pro? My main app is multitrack audio with Pro Tools. Thanks so much.

How much real world performance difference would there be between the 1600MHz memory of a 4,1 Mac Pro and the 800MHz memory of a 3,1 Mac Pro? My main app is multitrack audio with Pro Tools. Thanks so much. The CPU speed of either one would be between 2.8GHz and 3.0GHz.

What are the differences.... firmware and build, there were tweaks to the PCIe bus itself. As a result 3rd party cards and booting is better.
Support in 5,1 firmware for more 56xx and W35/36xx processors. Also memory timing.
The 4,1 was "64-bit boot mode optional" and 5,1 was default. I don't know if there are changes but I assume so, even if it is not reflected elsewhere or in version number.
I don't know what the prices are but 2009, to buy one today, when the 2010 is $1800.
The 2008 of course was test bed for 64-bit UEFI and it sure seems even Lion and then ML are not as well engineered - outside of Linc who would be the least likely to have a problem.
I would assume 2010 has better support for 8GB and even 16GB DIMMs as well as for 1333MHz.
Nehalem family had only come out in fall 2008 and a lot of work went into making improvements well past 2009.
If you remember, there were serious heat problems with those and 10.5.7+ up thru 10.6.2 even with iTunes, audio, and hyperthreading and cores hitting and staying in 80*C range. That I assume was both poor code (sleep does not mean poke and ask constantly) as well as changes in SMC and kernel improvements, to work around. Microcode can be patched in firmware, kernel, by drivers and by code, but it is best when the chips and core elements don't need to be.
If someone is stretched, and can get 2009 for $1200 it might be a fine fit. That year offered the OEM GT120 which isn't really as nice and matched for today both OS and apps that rely on a GPU. And for odd reasons two such 120's don't work well in Lion+ but that is probably minor. Having the 5770 is just "nicer" though.
There are some articles about trouble booting with PCIe SATA/SAS/SSD and less trouble with 2010. Also support for graphic card and audio I think was one of those "minor" 5770 related support issues. But shows some small changes were made there too.
I wish someone would come out and pre-announce DDR4 + SATA3 along with PCIe 3.x (for bandwidth and more power per rail) along with say Ivy Bridge-E socket processors was going to be this summer's 3 yr anniversary and to replace the 2010 designed motherboard. But that is what is on Intel's and others drawing boards simmeringn in the pot.

I just replaced the hard drive for my Mac Pro, and I am trying to restore what is on my Time Capsule, but it wont connect, and only is giving me the pinwheel of death. What do i do?

You will need to boot from some alternate boot device to accomplish this, if you did not initialize the drive before installing it.
If you have another Mac, you may be able to use FireWire target disk mode.
If your MacBook has a DVD reader and you have a Mac OS X Installer/Utilities DVD, such as the one that shipped with it, you can boot from that DVD, answer only the "what Language" question, and wait a quarter minute for the MenuBar to be drawn. Then examine the Utilities menu or the Installer menu and Find Disk Utility.

  • Going between Mac Pro and G4 laptop

Hi - I am needing to go out of town for a month and I need to keep working as business as usual with my system. In the past, I would clone my older G4 tower system drive to my G4 Powerbook and then back again when I returned home. This worked perfectly.
    (Using 10.5.7)
Recently I upgraded to a Mac Pro and I know that with the Intel processor I cannot clone back and forth anymore since my Powerbook is a G4.
How can I keep my computer, mostly Mail, Dreamweaver and iCal, synced so I can keep my workflow with a good transition? My data is on a separate external drive that travels with me. I'm not worried about applications as I still have them installed on my Powerbook pretty much in the same way as my MP is set up.
#1 - I really need to have all of my Mail accounts (pop3) data - the sent and received messages - to be duplicated between the two systems before I leave and then when I return to the MP system. My Dreamweaver account settings would be important as well since I need to manage about over 100 different accounts and it helps to keep them current as I am frequently adding and editing account login data.
    Suggestions?

If you copy the entire user folder you will also copy the /Home/Library/ folder. Although this isn't necessarily a problem, if you have PPC plug-ins for contextual menus, preference panes, or input managers they will no longer work on an Intel machine. You would need to replace them with universal binary versions for compatibility. For more about migration from a PPC see the following:
A Basic Guide for Migrating to Intel-Macs
If you are migrating a PowerPC system (G3, G4, or G5) to an Intel-Mac be careful what you migrate. Keep in mind that some items that may get transferred will not work on Intel machines and may end up causing your computer's operating system to malfunction.
Rosetta supports "software that runs on the PowerPC G3, G4, or G5 processor that are built for Mac OS X". This excludes the items that are not universal binaries or simply will not work in Rosetta:
Classic Environment, and subsequently any Mac OS 9 or earlier applications
    Screensavers written for the PowerPC
    System Preference add-ons
    All Unsanity Haxies
    Browser and other plug-ins
    Contextual Menu Items
Applications which specifically require the PowerPC G5
    Kernel extensions
Java applications with JNI (PowerPC) libraries
See also What Can Be Translated by Rosetta.
In addition to the above you could also have problems with migrated cache files and/or cache files containing code that is incompatible.
If you migrate a user folder that contains any of these items, you may find that your Intel-Mac is malfunctioning. It would be wise to take care when migrating your systems from a PowerPC platform to an Intel-Mac platform to assure that you do not migrate these incompatible items.
If you have problems with applications not working, then completely uninstall said application and reinstall it from scratch. Take great care with Java applications and Java-based Peer-to-Peer applications. Many Java apps will not work on Intel-Macs as they are currently compiled. As of this time Limewire, Cabos, and Acquisition are available as universal binaries. Do not install browser plug-ins such as Flash or Shockwave from downloaded installers unless they are universal binaries. The version of OS X installed on your Intel-Mac comes with special compatible versions of Flash and Shockwave plug-ins for use with your browser.
The same problem will exist for any hardware drivers such as mouse software unless the drivers have been compiled as universal binaries. For third-party mice the current choices are USB Overdrive or SteerMouse. Contact the developer or manufacturer of your third-party mouse software to find out when a universal binary version will be available.
Also be careful with some backup utilities and third-party disk repair utilities. Disk Warrior 4.1, TechTool Pro 4.6.1, SuperDuper 2.5, and Drive Genius 2.0.2 work properly on Intel-Macs with Leopard. The same caution may apply to the many "maintenance" utilities that have not yet been converted to universal binaries. Leopard Cache Cleaner, Onyx, TinkerTool System, and Cocktail are now compatible with Leopard.
Before migrating or installing software on your Intel-Mac check MacFixit's Rosetta Compatibility Index.

Transferring data with Setup Assistant - Migration Assistant FAQ
Because Migration Assistant isn't the ideal way to migrate from PowerPC to Intel Macs, using Target Disk Mode, copying the critical contents to CD and DVD, an external hard drive, or networking
will work better when moving from PowerPC to Intel Macs. The initial section below discusses Target Disk Mode. It is then followed by a section which discusses networking with Macs that lack Firewire.
If both computers support the use of Firewire then you can use the following instructions:
    1. Repair the hard drive and permissions using Disk Utility.
    2. Backup your data. This is vitally important in case you make a mistake or there's some other problem.
    3. Connect a Firewire cable between your old Mac and your new Intel Mac.
    4. Startup your old Mac in Target Disk Mode.
    5. Startup your new Mac for the first time, go through the setup and registration screens, but do NOT migrate data over. Get to your desktop on the new Mac without migrating any new data over.
If you are not able to use a Firewire connection (for example you have a Late 2008 MacBook that only supports USB:)
    1. Set up a local home network: Creating a small Ethernet Network.
    2. If you have a MacBook Air or Late 2008 MacBook see the following:

Copy the following items from your old Mac to the new Mac:
In your /Home/ folder: Documents, Movies, Music, Pictures, and Sites folders.
    In your /Home/Library/ folder:
/Home/Library/Application Support/AddressBook (copy the whole folder)
/Home/Library/Application Support/iCal (copy the whole folder)
Also in /Home/Library/Application Support (copy whatever else you need including folders for any third-party applications)
    /Home/Library/Keychains (copy the whole folder)
    /Home/Library/Mail (copy the whole folder)
    /Home/Library/Preferences/ (copy the whole folder)
/Home /Library/Calendars (copy the whole folder)
/Home /Library/iTunes (copy the whole folder)
/Home /Library/Safari (copy the whole folder)
    If you want cookies:
    /Home/Library/Cookies/Cookies.plist
    /Home/Library/Application Support/WebFoundation/HTTPCookies.plist
    For Entourage users:
Entourage is in /Home/Documents/Microsoft User Data
    Also in /Home/Library/Preferences/Microsoft
Credit goes to Macjack for this information.
If you need to transfer data for other applications please ask the vendor or ask in the Discussions where specific applications store their data.
    5. Once you have transferred what you need restart the new Mac and test to make sure the contents are there for each of the applications.

  • Is my mac pro and visio 42' tv compatible?

I am trying to use my 42"Visio LCD as a monitor on my mac pro and I am having no success.  Are they compatible?  If they are any help would be appreciated on making it work.  They are connected with a DVI-d to HDMI cable.

Set the TV to the input you connected the HDMI cable to.
On your computer, if you open the Displays preferences and do not see an Arrangement tab (or there is an Arrangement tab that shows only a single monitor) then there is something physically wrong with your connection.  Try clicking Detect Displays just to see if the computer can now sense the presence of the connection.
If you do have an Arrangement tab, and it shows two screens, then click Gather Windows to bring the TV's Displays preferences on to your main screen if the TV is not yet showing an image.  Set the proper resolution (probably 720p, 1080i, or 1080p).  Set the refresh rate (probably 60Hz) if that preference is shown.  You should see a picture at this point.  I  recommend turning off mirrored displays if it is enabled.
You may have to play with the underscan/overscan settings on your TV and the displays prefs for the TV if the picture is too small or larger for the TV screen.
When using a DVI connection for the video you need to handle the audio separately since audio is not passed through DVI.  You could connect your stereo audio out to your TV (3.5 mm stereo jack for the compter to usually RCA jacks on the TV).
And if running Lion, do not run in Lion full screen mode.

  • Last Mac Pro with Firewire 400?

The new Mac Pro's look nice, but without Firewire 400 they're useless to me... Can anyone tell me when the last Mac Pro with Firewire 400 was released?...and what the speeds were on them? Thanks in advance if anyone can help.

Fair points, to be sure. I just think that, given the number of common/popular devices that are FW400 only, the removal of FW400 ports is a bit premature at this time. Like the OP said, it would be frustrating to buy a very expensive computer, and immediately have to expand in order to make use of fairly standard and not yet out-dated gear.
    Dave Sawyer wrote:
Sorry to disagree, but to me, expecting a company to go to the expense of engineering in a different physical port just to save someone from having to use a simple, inexpensive cable adaptor seems a bit silly.
It couldn't be that hard/expensive, given that previous models had both. Though I certainly understand the idea of reducing cost wherever possible.

  • Mac Pro and Final Cut Studio 5.1.2

I've had problems trying to export mpeg files from final cut pro using compressor after having updated all applications to their current versions (FCP 5.1.2, Compressor 2.3, Qmaster 2.3, QT 7.1.3...) including firmware, OS and security updates. Since I was kind of in the middle of a project I ended up reverting back to the original universal crossgrade of Final Cut Studio (FCP 5.1, Compressor 2.1, Qmaster 2.1...) in order to get the desired results of a muxed mpeg. Now, before I go back to trying to resolve this issue of updating the software, I would like to know if anyone is running Final Cut Studio on a Mac Pro with all updates current (5.1.2, 2.3...) and with the ability to export muxed mpeg streams - both audio and video in the same file. Also, I have posted more specific questions regarding these issues in the compressor and FCP forums but decided I needed to hear from some Mac Pro users who have had success with the Final Cut Studio updates. BTW, I have done all the updates of Final Cut Studio (5.1.2, 2.3...) on a G5 quad at work and have had no problems whatsoever. I'd just like to have everything up to date and functional. Other than trying to get this worked out, I have found my Mac Pro to be most excellent. Thanks in advance.

Dave, thanks for your input. It would crash out during the compressor export and the failure reason would say 3x Crash Server Down in the compressor box. I haven't tried an mpeg-1 because all we broadcast are mpeg-2 program streams. Most of the stuff I export is no longer than 10 - 12 minute segments. If you could, try exporting as an mpeg-2 muxed. Some other possible factors - I had captured the original footage on a G5 quad at work, put them on an external drive and then loaded them onto the Mac Pro and imported them into the project. Could there be a difference between DV codecs of the PPC and the Intel processors? Now that I'm at a stopping point I'm planning on trying to do the update again. Just hoping to catch something I might have missed. If I were a total computer illiterate I would say user error, but I'm not.

  • Mac Pro and Panasonic DV

Have just got a Mac Pro (and am also new to Macs). I have a two year old Panasonic NV-GS15 digital video camera attached via firewire, I can't pick up the camera at all...in i-movie, Final Cut Pro (5.1) or even see it when looking under the firewire port. Have been on Panasonic website and the driver information I found was related to PC/Windows. Have emailed Panasonic but they aren't replying.

I have same problem with Mac Pro and Panasonic PV-GS120. I went to Apple store and tried Mac Pros over there and they all had the problem. PowerBooks (G4 and Intel) as well as iMacs can all see the camcoder fine and iMovie imports clips without problems. System Profiler does not show any FireWire devices once the camcoder is attached Mac Pro and /var/log/system.log reports that FireWire has been reset multiple times in the last minute. I've filled in the form to escalate issue to Apple but I have no idea when the issues is going to be addressed.

How can i stream(air mirroring) *.mkv files between Mac Pro and AppleTV2 by using quicktimeX?
As stated you can't. Even if the compressed data is TV compatible, the container is not. If the file is playback compatible with the QT X Player, you can, of course, play the file on your main system and "mirror" its display to the TV. Unfortunately, this normally means only the video is played back via the TV device. On the other hand, if you convert the MKV content to an TV compatible file (or move the compressed data to an TV compatible container if the data is already TV compatible), then you can mirror the QT X player (with audio) to the TV device in the full screen mode, air play/mirror it from iTunes (or any mobile device), or stream it directly from itunes.
Basically, what you can do here depends on the compressed data in the MKV file container and how you define "mirroring."
