Mac pro and motu PCIe audio card with a 2408mkIII

mac pro and motu PCIe
i recently upgraded to the mac pro from a G5 and now my motu 2408 mkIII sound card does not work.
i installed the motu PCIe 424 pci card from motu and installed the latest UB drivers, followed the instructions to the letter, repeated numerous times in every pci e slot with only temporary luck. it worked briefly and then when the computer slept i lost the connection with the interface and have not been able to regain it.. yes i re-installed to the letter again. the pcie card is seen by the computer but it cannot seen the external rack mounted 2408 via the audiowire that connects it. yes i tried other cables. the unit worked fine on my G5.
i have heard of others with the same problem after updating the firmware to SMC 1.7. my mac pro came with the latest firmware.

To my surprise I had five software updates waiting for me. Among them Pro App update, two of them, and this SMC update. After I updated my MOTU PCI-424 audio interface no longer works. Tried installing MOTU drivers again, still nothing. It can't communicate with its audio interfaces. So right now, this amazing update from Apple stopped me from working, and I am on a pretty tight deadline. I hope I'll find a solution ASAP

  • Mac Pro Boot from PCIe SATA Card

Is it possible to boot a Mac Pro from a PCIe Sata adapter? I bought a PCIe SATA III card to connect to my 64 Gb C300 SSD Drive.  The internal SATA II drives are not fast enough to take full advantage of the C300.

Old Thread But Great News for MAc and PC Laptop Owners I know and trust this company and just bought this for my MAc Pro it boots up the hard drive a couple ways.  In Mac hold down the option key and or once in MAc OS tell it to startup disk the external Sata (eSATA)
Worked 100% on my Mac Pro 2008 and this works on Laptops Mac and Windows
One catch its expensive but can go up to 6G WOOOOOOOOWs
Only card out of  TON I have tried that will boot at least MAc OSX dunno about windows/Boot Camp but I think theoretically it will with the "Option" key wait and be patient and once you choose the sata drive maybe you can boot boot camp dunno?   Actually yes you can once you set the startup disk to the esata boot camp windows will boot!!!   Wooooooooot

  • Mac Pro and Motu 2408

    Currently having several issues:
Mac Pro Quad 3GHZ 9GB RAM
    Logic Pro 7.2.3
    OSX 10.4.9
--- Audio appears to go to sleep after 10 minutes of non-use. Half the time loading a blank channel strip on any track (or a full one for that matter) will wake up the audio card, the other half of the time a full computer restart is required.
--- Logic Pro will crash when attempting to "Save As..."
--- Logic Pro will crash for no apparent reason, and frequently.
Types of plugins used (with all currently available updates):
    NI Komplete 4
    Ivory 1.5
    EXS24
    Chris Hein Guitars
    Vienna Instruments
I have contacted MOTU and they claim that their drivers work perfectly well with 10.4.9 and 10.4.10.
Anyone have any suggestions or ideas?

Do these crashes occur on almost blank sessions or only when you have a lot of plugins in use? If it only happens with lots of plugins I would open your activity monitor (applications>utilities>activity monitor) and check you system usage. It may be logic's memory handling is the issue. Have a look if the real memory usage is listed as being 16TB. This is a known issue with logic when its RAM usage exceeds 2GB. Installing the Pro App upgrade can help, else just freeze a few tracks til the usage drops to a sensible number.
Are you getting an error report from these logic crashes? If so I would suggest you post a copy of the crashed thread here to help diagnose the problem. I have not experience any similar problems with the 2408 despite the fact my system is virtually identical. Although I did get a lot of crashes from Ivory until I installed the 1.63 update, and have had the system become very unstable when more than 2GB memory is in use.

  • 2 questions: validity of my machine's status as a 3.1 Mac Pro, and what PCIE cables for Radeon 4870?

Hello, I bought a used mac pro from a guy that said it was a 3.1.  It runs great and when I go to "About this Mac" and then to "More info" and look at the hardware info, it says that it is indeed a 3,1.  However, the serial number sticker on the back says it's a 2.8!  Any insights into that?  I'm very new to Mac Pro desktops and I just want to make sure I didn't get ripped off.
My second question.  The machine came with the standard X2 quad 2.88 GHz processor, 8gb of Ram, and a Radeon 2200 graphics card.  I bought an ATI Radeon HD 4870 from a guy on craigslist but he didn't have the power cables for it.  He said it wasn't a big deal and after I did some research it looks like I need some PCIE power connectors.  The card takes two, 6 pin power cables.  My question is where do I plug them in on the logic board?  Should it be a 6 pin plug in also meaning I want a 6pin to 6pin cable like this (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16812200975&nm_mc=KNC-Google Adwords&cm_mmc=KNC-GoogleAdwords-_-pla-_-Internal+Power+Cables-_-N82E16812200975 &gclid=CMW8u4Po5LUCFcdDMgodx2AAyA).
So yeah, the simplest answer I'm looking for is what cables do i need to power my ATI Radeon 4870 in my Mac Pro?  Another way to answer that I guess would be to explain to me the way my power supply works in my mac pro.
    Thanks!
    Mickey

That is an 8-pin. And I just posted Amazon link to 6-pin in another graphic card upgrade thread minutes ago.
And  it had a ATI 2600XT. good thing you replaced it.
10.6.8  tends to run best but try - andkeep 10.8.x and see  how it goes. Also more options later in graphic cards.
Call Apple and have them check  the serial number and they can provide for small $20?fee the OEM  DVDs it shipped with (10.5.x) and  Apple Hardware Test. They can  also sell 10.6.3 DVD
I would have looked for the ATI 5770, better support, the 4870 lacks some ML (Mountain Lion) support for OpenCL.

  • Mac Pro and FireWire M-Audio 1814

Can some one please HELP ME configure my Mac System with my Fire Wire?
all I need help with is hooking up the Speakers to the fire wire then the fire wire to the Mac so I can get the sound Out.
    many thanks in advance..

Dear Mr. Zarzowski, I'll do what I can. first try going to m-audio.com and under 'support' type in the model # of your thing...ah, I see. the M-audio has ts/trs connectors which use headphone style plugs (the big ones) so, depending on what connector your speakers have, you'd need a speaker connector to 1/4 inch adapter
as for the fireWire, you'd have to go into audio, then input/output, select the FireWire unit, then maybe output over Firewire. Also go into midi setup and make sure that's setup correctly, ie the output and input should be FireWire and not line in/line out. I presume the unit comes with software, ie a FireWire control panel? You might want to install that, too

  • How much real world difference would there be between the 1600MHz memory of a 4,1 Mac Pro and the 800MHz memory of a 3,1 Mac Pro? My main app is multitrack audio with Pro Tools. Thanks so much.

How much real world performance difference would there be between the 1600MHz memory of a 4,1 Mac Pro and the 800MHz memory of a 3,1 Mac Pro? My main app is multitrack audio with Pro Tools. Thanks so much. The CPU speed of either one would be between 2.8GHz and 3.0GHz.

What are the differences.... firmware and build, there were tweaks to the PCIe bus itself. As a result 3rd party cards and booting is better.
Support in 5,1 firmware for more 56xx and W35/36xx processors. Also memory timing.
The 4,1 was "64-bit boot mode optional" and 5,1 was default. I don't know if there are changes but I assume so, even if it is not reflected elsewhere or in version number.
I don't know what the prices are but 2009, to buy one today, when the 2010 is $1800.
The 2008 of course was test bed for 64-bit UEFI and it sure seems even Lion and then ML are not as well engineered - outside of Linc who would be the least likely to have a problem.
I would assume 2010 has better support for 8GB and even 16GB DIMMs as well as for 1333MHz.
Nehalem family had only come out in fall 2008 and a lot of work went into making improvements well past 2009.
If you remember, there were serious heat problems with those and 10.5.7+ up thru 10.6.2 even with iTunes, audio, and hyperthreading and cores hitting and staying in 80*C range. That I assume was both poor code (sleep does not mean poke and ask constantly) as well as changes in SMC and kernel improvements, to work around. Microcode can be patched in firmware, kernel, by drivers and by code, but it is best when the chips and core elements don't need to be.
If someone is stretched, and can get 2009 for $1200 it might be a fine fit. That year offered the OEM GT120 which isn't really as nice and matched for today both OS and apps that rely on a GPU. And for odd reasons two such 120's don't work well in Lion+ but that is probably minor. Having the 5770 is just "nicer" though.
There are some articles about trouble booting with PCIe SATA/SAS/SSD and less trouble with 2010. Also support for graphic card and audio I think was one of those "minor" 5770 related support issues. But shows some small changes were made there too.
I wish someone would come out and pre-announce DDR4 + SATA3 along with PCIe 3.x (for bandwidth and more power per rail) along with say Ivy Bridge-E socket processors was going to be this summer's 3 yr anniversary and to replace the 2010 designed motherboard. But that is what is on Intel's and others drawing boards simmeringn in the pot.

  • Universal Audio Card in mac pro and logic together.

Hello, I am thinking on purchasing an Universal Audio Card and using it with a mac pro and logic studio.
Does anyone know if they have used or know about using a Universal Audio card (UAD-2 Nevana 32), or any other universal audio card?
Can you use this card with a mac pro and logic studio and does it have any latency issues? And can you use the Universal's mixor and logic's mixor at the same time, Or do you just use the plug ins on the UAD when using logic. Also it looks like it comes with one input on the card, so how do you plug in multiple guitars and bass and piano, or do you just run one input in and buy a input device for it (what would I need to buy for that?), Thanks so much.
    Lou.

Universal's documentation says that it is compatible with Logic 7 and Logic 8. You might want to ask in the Logic forums about hands-on experiences. Universal also has their own forums where you'll probably be more likely to get useful information from experienced users:

  • PCIe Audio Cards for new '09 Mac Pro? (more detailed)

    Hi Guys/Gals
I bit the bullet and just upgraded from my Dual 2.7Ghz (LC) G5 to a new 2.66Ghz 8-core MacPro. I now have to find a PCIe audio card (stereo is fine). I used to use an RME Hammerfall 3296 PCI card in my trusty G5 as an alternative audio out (Digi 003R for ProTools and Logic Pro 8 etc.). Do you know of any PCIe audio cards? I just want to use it for iTunes etc as the Digi doesn't allow play through via core audio etc. I already use the optical with my Logitech surrounds but want to send the iTunes stereo signal to my main amp and pro speakers for auditioning cd's and songs.
    Thanks in advance!
    Bobs

Good point on obsolete! I'm sure there's some new flavour on the way soon too.
Basically, all my firewire ports are used up, I have a Digidesign 003R, 2 FW 800 externals, a FW 400 external HD and an Apple iSight. I tried a Kingston FW hub but got lots of crashes/freezes with it so i can up on that! I may have to resort to either a USB type I/O (lots to choose from there). Someone suggested I use an Airport Express but the problem is that Apple's core audio sends the same signal out the analog audio as it does the optical outs too so I need a completely separate device.
You're right though, I may have to give in on the PCIe card option as most cards are for high end audio and I don't need that. I only need to play stereo tracks from iTunes to my main amplifier.
    Thanks again!

Not sure if I'm following you. I have 4 hard drives installed on my Mac Pro. I had a RAID 5 configured and functional for about 5 months. My battery died on the RAID card. I replaced the battery, seated the RAID card back in the slot I removed it from. When I booted to the USB drive to look in the RAID utility, I could see the battery is charged but my volumes are not showing.
The drives don't show in disk Utility. I built the RAID with the RAID Utility and they did show there. I have a early 2008 Mac Pro, Mavricks OS running Mac Server

  • Mac Pro and Video Card. Which???

Hey Guys, Im planning on buying a Mac Pro and if I was not sparing any expense to get the latest & greatest, then would buying the "NVIDIA Quadro FX 4500 512MB, Stereo 3D (2 x dual-link DVI)" ensure the best high end card I can buy for my mac? Is there a big difference between that and the "ATI Radeon X1900 XT 512MB" or the "NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT 256MB" ?? Not sure which to choose. Thanks

The Quadro is the fastest card you can buy.
Between the Quadro and the X1900, there isn't much of a difference performance wise, but the Quadro is very slightly faster then the X1900 in certain tasks (gaming, in particular).
Between the X1900 and the 7300, there's no real comparison. The 7300 is a baseline card. It will do everything the X1900 does- but not as fast and your frames per second (FPS) will suffer significantly in things where that matters (gaming, again).
If you aren't tied to the Quadro and you want something with any reasonable amount of speed to go with the capabilities of the rest of the machine (Quad Xeon cores), then go with the X1900. It's cheaper, and about the same speed as the Quadro.
The 7300 is, well, going to be slow compared to the X1900/Quadro.

  • Quartz Extreme not showing up on stock Mac Pro and card

I have purchased a new Mac Pro and LED Cinema Display from the Apple store last month. Safari Top Sites is not working and the "help" stated I need Quartz Extreme. Looked in the profile, but it is not listed in the list on the right at all. It is a stock apple card and display.
Is my monitor video card not even capable of using this feature or do I need to reinstall the system or something??

  • Which video card to buy for Mac Pro and AE CS3

I am about to purchase a new Mac Pro and am curious which video card to buy - particularly when it comes to rendering speed.
Apple offers the ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT with 256MB of GDDR3 as a standard option, with the NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT with 512MB of GDDR3 as a $150 BTO option.
I primarily use AE CS3 using adaptive resolution in lieu of Open GL. The projects are very 3d intensive. My initial thought is that the NVIDIA card has more VRAM and would be a better pick - but would my $$$ be better off toward more RAM? Does using CS4 make a difference?
Any thoughts would be appreciated. And yes, I have searched the forums but have not found anything definitive.

Personally, I'd buy more RAM. The standard display card supplied with the Mac Pro will have perfectly good specs for AE and Prem Pro.
Yes, CS4 should render faster than CS3.

  • What graphics card or cards Mac Pro and Dual 30 inch ACD's?

I am hoping that you can all help with a few questions regarding running two 30 inch displays in a new Mac Pro and using Final Cut Pro, Motion, and After Effects.
My issue is which card(s) to order... Two NVIDIA GeForce GT 120 512MB or the ATI Radeon HD 4870 512MB.
Can FCP work off of two different Graphics Cards? I would hook one display to each NVIDIA card via the Dual Link DVI port.
Or with the ATI, I would hook one monitor to the Dual Link DVI and one to the Mini Display Port with the adapter.
The ATI is obviously a more powerful card individually; but, two NVIDIA cards would allow for each monitor its own "lane," which seems like it would be an advantage.
Any advice would be great. I am primarily an FCP user and probably hit After Effects for 25% of my work.
Thanks in advance for any advice!

Neither Motion or Color support dual graphics cards.
FCP used to have issues but they have been addressed in v7 (reportedly).
The 4870 is the better card by far but don't know if it will support 2 30" monitors. In any case, you are spreading the VRAM over a lot of pixels. You'd probably have better response driving 2 24" monitors.
    x
fwiw - I don't see the benefit of gigantic monitors. They take up an enormous amount of desktop space, draw a small city's worth of power and don't offer that many more pixels.
