MAc Pro Backup Solution ?

Sorry did not know where else to post... I am going to need about a 1 TB backup solution that I can add on to. I will be using it with my Mac Pro and Time Machine just for backing up data, not for randomly accessing it for application work.
1. Which is faster for backing up data?
-USB
-FireWire 800
-Gigabit
2. What success have you had for the product that are available on the market today (i.e. Time Capsule, Western Digital, etc...?)
Thanks in advance,
Mike

1. Internal, FW800, USB, GB Ethernet in that order.
2. I do my backups to internal drives in my Mac Pro. If you want an external system then I'd recommend building it yourself:
Although you can buy a complete FireWire drive system, you can also put one together if you are so inclined. It's relatively easy and only requires a Phillips head screwdriver (typically.) You can purchase hard drives separately. This gives you an opportunity to shop for the best prices on a hard drive of your choice. Reliable brands include Seagate, Hitachi, Western Digital, Toshiba, and Fujitsu. You can find reviews and benchmarks on many drives at Bare Feats, Storage Review, and Tom's Hardware Review.
Enclosures for FireWire and USB are readily available. You can find only FireWire enclosures, only USB enclosures, and enclosures that feature multiple ports. I would stress getting enclosures that use the Oxford chipsets (911, 921, 922, for example.) You can find enclosures at places such as;
Cool Drives
OWC
WiebeTech
Firewire Direct
California Drives
NewEgg
All you need do is remove a case cover, mount the hard drive in the enclosure and connect the cables, then re-attach the case cover. Usually the only tool required is a small or medium Phillips screwdriver.

  • Mac Pro Backup - Data Recovery

So the power went out in my dorm and my Mac Pro wont start up in OS X. I put in the install disk and windows 7 works fine. I went to Disk utility and found that I cannot verify or repair the disk. I do not however have a back up of my disk and was wondering how I could recover my data...
I have two hard disks a 250GB seagate (that has a partition with win7 on it and about a 100 GB free)
My primary OSX disk is a WD Green Caviar (1.5 tb, Which has all the files I need to recover) Is there any way I could Time machine it?
    Thanks

    Basics of File Recovery
    Files in Trash
If you simply put files in the Trash you can restore them by opening the Trash (left-click on the Trash icon) and drag the files from the Trash to your Desktop or other desired location. OS X also provides a short-cut to undo the last item moved to the Trash -press COMMAND-Z.
If you empty the Trash the files are gone. If a program does an immediate delete rather than moving files to the Trash, then the files are gone. Recovery is possible but you must not allow any additional writes to the hard drive - shut it down. When files are deleted only the directory entries, not the files themselves, is modified. The space occupied by the files has been returned to the system as available for storage, but the files are still on the drive. Writing to the drive will then eventually overwrite the space once occupied by the deleted files in which case the files are lost permanently. Also if you save a file over an existing file of the same name, then the old file is overwritten and cannot be recovered.
    General File Recovery
If you stop using the drive it's possible to recover deleted files that have not been overwritten by using recovery software such as Data Rescue II, File Salvage or TechTool Pro. Each of the preceding come on bootable CDs to enable usage without risk of writing more data to the hard drive.
The longer the hard drive remains in use and data are written to it, the greater the risk your deleted files will be overwritten.

  • How can I load Numbers 2.3 or iWork from my mac pro to my new Mini??

Hi guys.  I want to load numbers 2.3 onto my new mac mini running Mavericks. I want 2.3 and 3.0 to run side by side as I have seen others do here.
My Mini has only ever had 3.0.  I copy and pasted iWorks over, however it did not work though comes up with compatibility error.
the app store did allow me to update from this method though.
My mac pro is running 10.6.4 with iWorks 09 running beautifully.
I was told about trying Migration Assistant, did not work either, My ex HDD has TM for both on there and when I open MA it only recognizes and asks about
importing from the mini backup only. It is not reading the mac pro backup.
Any ideas or suggestions are much appreciated.
I have attempted downloads from net with no avail, I am giving my cc numbers to pple when they say 'I will not charge you'....
one download was an issue because osx no longer supports ppc power pc games - claytons hard drives on computer.
    Thanks and enjoy.
I see my other question on moving tables between sheets is stumping ppl, a few views no responses,  Is it POSSIBLE???
Jason.  Dream Big and achieve everyone.

Not sure it will work - it might have to do with the licensing requirements; any app downloaded through the app store can be run on as many Macs as you own and control. However, yours is still the old version of  iWork which has an older, separate agreement. Applicable excerpt here:

  • Mac Pro having lots of lock up and crashing trouble

    Hi,
My early 2008 Mac Pro has been misbehaving for a while now in various ways. Now it is completely out of hand!
I was having some serious waking from sleep issues in the past and after performing a bunch of maintenance they got better (although they never disappeared completely). Now I am having a lot of trouble with the computer locking up. Usually within 10 minutes of waking from sleep, everything freezes. I can still move the mouse, and the computer will go into (and wake from) a monitor sleep but nothing on the screen is responsive.
Also, when waking from sleep, the screen goes blue for a few seconds before giving me the normal screen. Here is a copy of the console report from its most recent wake:

Old drivers, outdated drivers and incompatible drivers can cause sleep problems.
If you are not using any M-audio devices, I would remove the files.
If you are, you should check for updates, and still should remove the offending files.
If you migrated your user files from a previous system, say from a PPC system, these can cause problems.
Start by running in safe mode, and see if the machine sleeps and wakes as it should.
Troubleshoot your Startup and Login items as described in this article:

  • Home Network - MB Pro/PC/Mac Pro - Can't see an internal Mac Pro Drive

Hi folks... I'm the MacBook Pro user in the house.
3 drives in the Mac Pro - One is FAT32 formatted.
It has all the shared movies/music for the house on it (PC user also uses it)
I can't access the internal FAT32 drive from my macbook pro... all on leopard, no probs in seeing the other 2 drives on the mac pro.
    any solutions?

    Hmm.
Can the PC see the drive?
Is the Mac Pro running Leopard?

  • Mac Pro compatibility with Xserve Raid

Are the two compatible? In other words, can I connect an Xserve Raid to my Mac Pro (asuming that I have a Fiber Chanel card)?
If above answer is yes, asume that the Mac Pro is connected to a WLAN at home via Ethernet or airport. This WLAN also hosts one more computer (PC). Will this PC have access to the Xserve raid data?
Finally (and asuming that cost is not a big issue-I know how much the Raid solution costs, even at minimum config), Do you think that the Xserve Raid solution (with the minimum configuration) is better/more reliable/faster/ than the Mac Pro internal solution? Take into consideration that I am a photographer (shooting digital and raw format ONLY) and I consume about 50-60Gb of disk space per month
    Mac Pro 2.66   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

You might want to look at what some other photographers use, Port Multiplier controller and drive enclosures. Up to 5 drives per channel for a total of 20 drives.
XRAID would offer FC and more levels of RAID support, and concurrent access, especially with Xsan.
Take a look at the AMUG reviews:

  • Seagate Backup Plus Slim External USB 3 Hard Drive Not Working with Mac Pro

Hi, I have just purchased a brand new Mac Pro.  I have three 2 TB Seagate Backup Plus Slim External USB 3 hard drives that just don't jive with the new Mac Pro's.  When the drive is connected, I cannot access the drive, read/write or even format.  Finder completely locks up and the drive cannot even be force ejected. When I try to format, Disk Utility either spits out an error that the drive cannot be read, or simply locks up.  This happens regardless of the OS on the Mac Pro.  I am currently running 10.10.2
I have ruled out an issues with the drives, as I have tested all of them on a variety of systems and OS's, including Power Mac, Mac Book Pro, PC, OS 10.7, 10.8, 10.9 as well as on Windows.  I have tried formatting in every file system including Mac OS Extended, Mac OS Extended (Journaled), NTFS and exFAT.  ALL other systems have no issues with the drives. Apple has replaced my Mac Pro with a brand new one and the drives still behave the same way.  Furthermore, I have tested the drives on three other Mac Pro's at work and they all reject the drives. So, on their own, there is nothing wrong with the Mac Pro, or the drives. However, the configuration of them together is wreaking havoc.
I have contacted Seagate, and this was their response:
The most recent version of the Backup Plus drives use the USB Attached SCSI (UAS) standard to increase transfer rates.  It's possible that the drivers being used currently on your Mac Pro are having issues using this feature with the standard USB 3.0 drivers installed.  I would recommend contacting Apple to check for any driver updates or see if they any suggestions for issues involving drives using UAS.
I have also started a case with Apple Support (Case # 755934373) and am waiting to hear back regarding Seagate's response.  I've spent DAYS trying to troubleshoot this and am now at a complete loss.  If anyone has any ideas, I'm all ears (or eyes in this case).
    Thanks!

    Hi danielsh6,
I recently bought the new Lacie Thunderbolt 2 D2 3TB and I had the same problem as you, i have a macbook pro early 2011, those support thunderbolt but many times there is a bug that doesn't let you connect any thunderbolt drives to your computer. The solution I found was installing this update:
    Thunderbolt Firmware Update v1.0
Before doing this I would recommend you updating to mountain lion (not yosemite yet as there is still some glitches and more on preview's macbook pro's).
    Hope this helped!

  • Full backup ( ~ 1 TB ) using external HD - speed USB vs. Firewire vs. eSATA  - what are relative speeds - how to install eSATA on mid-2010 Mac Pro desktop ( dual hex-core processors)_

        Hi All,
I'm trying to resume regular scheduled Full backup ( ~ 1 TB ) of drives using external HD (to allow off-site redundant backup storage) .
What are relative speeds of USB vs. Firewire vs. eSATA ?
I suspect eSATA connection may be considerably faster … how to install eSATA on mid-2010 Mac Pro desktop ( dual hex-core processors)?
( The quicker and easier backup protocol is, the more likely one is to use it to backup on a routine repetitive basis.)
    Thanks

Adding a USB 3.0+eSATA PCIe card, which The hatter mentions, is the best solution that I've found. See http://eshop.macsales.com/item/CalDigit/FASTA6GU3/. The card is not cheap, but the USB 3.0 works flawlessly (which can't be assumed; ask me how I know) and the eSATA connection allows booting from the connected drive. Grant Bennet-Alder's point about HD speed is important to consider; in addition, the size of the individual files being backed up and where on the backup disk they're going will affect overall transfer speed. For example, using the USB 3.0 connection on that CalDigit card going to a Toshiba 3TB external, the transfer rate for a big file (say a virtual machine file) from an internal SSD boot drive was about 145 MB/sec while a bunch of little files might drop to 30 MB/sec and both rates decrease as an inner partition on the external is used. All told, a nearly 700 GB backup took under 1.5 hours. Using a HD as the source added almost an extra hour, though a WD external was used for that. Using a WD green drive plugged into this http://eshop.macsales.com/item/NewerTech/FWU3ES2HDK/ with an eSATA connection took about 2.5 hours also, but that was bootable whereas the USB 3.0 connection is not.
Another point to consider is that USB 3.0 is ubiquitous on PC's now so there's lots of price competition for externals; not so much for eSATA externals.

  • Mac OS X Server Backup solutions?

Hi all, I have built up my network with 3 Leopard servers running on Mac Pro's and 8 mac clients (one mobile)
Between all of them there is about 12TB's of storage space (about 2TB being used at present)
it really is time to now invest in a complete backup solution and we won't a format that can be taken offsite (Tape sounds the best)
I really have hardly any experience in this area and need to get some advice.
I have an ATTO Ultra320 card in one of the Mac Pro's so need to figure out which tape drive (or drives) which software and the best way to implement it.
All the clients are on OD so not overly bothered about backing them up, just the 3 main servers really.
Any help would be really appreciated, thanks.

Here's some grist for the thought mill...
The use of "Removable" here likely (probably?) means "remote", which itself (and depending on the bandwidth of the network connection or access to couriers or such) may or may not actually be a removable disk or removable tape storage, or disk or tape libraries.
What's the volume of the actual data? What's the rate of change of the data? There are two parts to the calculation for the creation and operation of the archive, the initial archive and the occasional (weekly, monthly, before an upgrade) full archive, and then the incremental (hourly, daily, weekly) archives. This assumes the usual two-level archive processing; an occasional full and a more frequent incremental.
You need to figure out how big these activities are, and what your backup window is. These details then drive the available hardware and media options and then the device selection.
Then determine (or guesstimate) the growth rate of the data. That tells you what your approach can support now, and how quickly your backup window (if you have one) might be closing. And (if you're using smaller media) when you might need to go to a larger-capacity media or to multi-volume archives. Right now, you can probably get most everything onto a 1 TB or 1.5 TB spindle, for instance.
You'll also need to sort out the local and continuously-active processing activities, and how to get copies of those. The sqldump tool, for instance, can be the path to get a recoverable installation. And that processing tends to be part of getting a recoverable archive.
There are cloud services around for storage and (if your change rate is less than the bandwidth "slop" available within your current network pipe) to a remote site that you manage or contract with; to a storage site or to warm site you work with, or out to an Amazon S3 or other competing storage pool. (There are various options for archiving out into Amazon S3, for instance. And Time Capsule and Time Machine is seriously slick.)
Never assume that RAID is an archival strategy. It's not. RAID is useless against application corruptions, blown software upgrades, user errors, client and server and storage theft, and malicious-user activities. Nor against roof-mounted heat exchanger system that sprout leaks that then pour red-colored coolant into the server racks. RAID protects against disk spindle failures and (for some specific configurations) against certain other "upstream" storage controller failures.
When you get all done, make sure you can recover and restart using your archives. Periodically test the recoverability of the archives.

  • Single best external storage solution for Mac Pro & MacBook Pro ...?

    Hello,
I'm still waiting for the Mac Pro delivery I have around me something like four external hard drives from different vendors and different sizes and all containing important data ... it is really a mess, cables, lack of redundancy, etc.
I wanted to replace all these once and for all by a single elegant long-lasting and reliable solution to combine with my new Mac Pro and MacBook Pro. The best I could find was OWC Mercury Elite-AL Pro Qx2 8.0TB containing four internal HDD in double RAID with multiple possible setups: RAID 0 and RAID 1, RAID 10 configurations:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Other%20World%20Computing/MEQX2T8.0S/
Looks like an excellent choice for the only one external storage solution! does anyone has experience with this model? are there better contenders?
    Many thanks in advance,
    Best regards,
    Giovanni

    Giovanni,
I have the OWC Mercury Elite-AL Pro Qx2 (6 TB) external HD array in a Raid 5 configuration (as received from OWC). I have found it to be excellent when connected to my Mac Pro using a PCI SATA card and the SATA output on the Elite-AL Pro Qx2. The speed of the system under Raid 5 easily supports all but uncompressed high definition video, and the system came with Prosoft's Data Backup software which does an excellent job of backing up other external drives installed on my Mac Pro.
I highly recommend the Qx2 and think you will find it is a good single source solution to providing you with reliable and safe storage for your data. With Raid 5 if one of the HD's in the Qx2 fails, you simply remove it and allow the system to rebuild the data when you insert a new HD. Thus unless two HD's fail simultaneously (high unlikely) you are protected against data loss. Note also that your Mac Pro does not have to be left on while the Qx2 is rebuilding.

  • Mac Pro 5,1 Start up disk preference   Internal bootable backup

    Hi,
I have a Mac Pro 5,1 running yosemite. My OS is installed on a PCIe SSD and I am trying to make a bootable backup of the OS to an internal HDD in one of the standard HD bays.
No matter how I make the backup (time machine or chrono sync), once a backup of the OS is present in the system my Mac won't boot and I get stuck on the white screen with no apple logo. Deleting the backup resolves the issue.
I have tried reselecting the Startup Disk, as well as resetting PRAM etc.
Has anyone seen this issue before?
Is it bad practice to have a backup on an internal drive?
    Thanks,
    Danny

Oh wow, thanks for this info. You've actually just provided info for another problem which I had given up on finding a solution to...
I have two PCIe sata cards (one single & one double), and through this thread I have identified the single card as Apricorn - I was unsure what make it was...
SLOT 1 - ATI graphics card
SLOT 2 - Apricorn Velocity Duo x2 (OS on Angelbird 250gb SSD + OWC Mercury Electra 6G SSD)
    SLOT 3 - Firewire 800/400 card
    SLOT 4 - Apricorn Velocity solo x 2 (empty - no drive)
All backup drives are HDDs in the traditional bays.
I had experienced HEAPS of problems with OWC drives and the Apricorn cards. The OWCs were unable to boot when on an Apricorn card by themselves. For some reason, having the Angelbird and OWC on one card lets the system boot. Seems I might need to update the firmware of the Apricorn cards.
If you have any other info on the backup problem though it would be of great help!
    Thanks,
    Danny

It is a hard one.. laptops with small drives are a pain.
What you need is a home media server.
Some people use a PC running itunes for cost.. but that is nothing like as good as using a Mac mini.. they make great little HTPC device.. you can plug in large hard disks and store all your files and media. And share it with the network.. Read up apple's instructions on home sharing.
    https://www.apple.com/au/support/homesharing/
For cost you can buy a mini from 2011 or 2012.. I would not recommend earlier ones.. the advantage of 2012 is they have USB3 ports. But you will pay more for them.. new mini is not as useful.. they have soldered in memory and you cannot upgrade.. the old mini was the most easily modified mac in the whole range. Uses little power and can be bought for a $300US for a good one second hand.. maybe less.

    Thanks in advance

If you are looking to actually integrate what you have on the external one terabyte hard drive with the 2 TB hard drive you're using inside the Mac the best move for you if you want access to that data when using the Mac Pro server is going into utilities click on the top bar where it says go fall that down to the utilities told them that folder quickly once you are there you will see migration assistant click on that you will be asked to type your admin password to that. It will ask you "how do you want to transfer your information" then select from a Time machine backup or other disk when it asks you will be transferring information to your Mac Pro from your 1 Tb backup external hard drive once it's finished eject the drive or reformat it and use it again if your objective was to infect keep compress the data on the external so you have more space but do not have access to it I strongly recommend Carbon Copy Clone 3.3.1 is 100% free and does a fantastic job here is the link http://www.pure-mac.com/downloads/carboncopyclonerdl.html of copying every block to create an exact replica of your source hard drive. If you want something different and don't mind paying SuperDuper! is a great product as well this WebSite will have many options I would stick to carbon copy clone http://www.pure-mac.com/backup.html I also like EMC Retrospect backup and recovery software for the Mac it is a great product but very much on the expensive side for backup utilities although if you need word offers this might be right up your alley.
    I hope I wasn't help,
    Sincerely,
    Thomas

  • I've got a mac pro problem with the starting up, but also a red light on the logic board solidly on. Its not among the diagnostic led. It's located near the BT adapter and the front fans. Also the fans run loud also. any solutions?

    Hi
I've got a mac pro late 2006, and i am having problem with it for quite a while now. the problem i am facing is the start up process, and the red light on the logic board. Earlier I've got the two led on the diagnostic leds 5 and 6 turned on without the diagnostic button being pressed, and i think those are related to the processors overtemp. I've managed to solve that by, removing the processors and re applying the thermal compound on the heatsink. what i have left now with is the red light on  the logic board at the time i plugged in the power. At the same time when this light come on, the power indicator at the front panel come on as well. i am not sure what is this light relates to. We've replace the power supply too, and gone through the SMC reset but seems no help.
Any idea on the problem? I am desperate about it, and i will be greatful if anyone can help..
thanks and hope for your best solutions
    Kari

I can't help directly with your problem but you might check here http://tim.id.au/laptops/apple/macpro/ for a service manual which could answer your question.
