Mac Pro boot option screen freezes after I select the Windows partition

Hello,
I have a mid-2010 Mac Pro, and I am currently experiencing an issue regarding booting into Windows 7.  Windows 7 64-bit is installed on its own HDD in bay 2 of my Mac Pro.  When I restart my Mac Pro (from OS X), hold the option key, and select the windows HDD, the computer completely freezes and locks up.  I can't move the mouse or use the arrow keys on the keyboard, and the boot select screen completely locks up after selecting the Windows HDD.  This issue does not happen, however, after a cold shutdown and startup.  If I completely shut down my Mac Pro, start it up, hold the option key, and select the Windows HDD, it boots into Windows perfectly fine.  It is only after a reboot from OS X that the boot select screen completely locks up after selecting the Windows HDD.
I have tried everything I can think of, including resetting the PRAM, SMC, repairing disk permissions, etc.  I did also call AppleCare a while back, and the technician on the phone was unable to find a solution.  I have also tried selecting the Windows partition in the Startup Disk pane of system preferences, and that did not work either.  I have also tried utilities such as BootChamp to automate the restart.  Same issue.  Could this be a hardware issue?
Thank you,
Robert

pull OS X and try
Too early to even try F8 - Windows safe boot
Try booting Windows DVD would be first on my list
Every month on 2nd Tuesday all the security updates for Windows patches come out
Clone your Windows hard drive - $20 Paragon Clone OS are just like CCC: bootable, swapable backup copies
Don't try using and it has nothing to do with OS X
It may be something you or Windows installed though or even an update pending on restart.

  • My bootcamped Mac Pro version 10.6.8 has sound in the windows 7 side but not on the mac side. Help!

My bootcamped Mac Pro version 10.6.8 has sound in the windows 7 side but no sound in the Mac side. Any suggestions?

    Hi there, @James.
You should check the audio output from the settings.
    1) Open the System Preferences.
    2) Click the "Sound" icon.
    3) Follow the steps.
I had this problem and that's how I solved it.

  • Mac Pro increasingly frequent screen freezes / crashes

    Hi,
Freezes on my MacPro are becomming increasingly frequent - I need to work out what the problem is as it's making the machine unusable. If anyone is having similar problems or has found a fix, please post here.
The issue that I am seeing is that suddenly the keyboard and mouse stop responding and the screen freezes. At first it's as if I've lost sight of the mouse pointer since the screen looks OK, but then I notice the keyboard has stopped working too. The little clock in the corner of the screen stops updating. It's not possible to quit or force quit anything. It sounds like the hard drives are doing something. I am able to SSH in to the machine while hung but not able to reboot it or shut it down (it just errors).
The only thing that enables me to recover my machine is to press and hold the power button for about 10secs until it powers off. Then I can power it up again and it works fine. If I run disk utility after reboot it doesn't find any issues.
I've not been able to find any link between the software I'm running - it just happened this evening about 7 minutes after booting when iTunes was the only open application.
It's a 2.8Ghz dual quad core pro with the 8800, 10G RAM, 4 drives, bluetooth keyboard and a wireless logitech mouse. I just put new batteries in the keyboard, have had 3 more crashes since. It has Airport but it is switched off. The only things plugged in to the USB / Firewire are an ACD monitor, an APC UPS and the reciver for the USB Mouse. All of it has been working fine with no hardware changes since delivery (for about 6-7 months). The only thing I've changed on the hardware in the last 6 months is I added a 4th drive last week, but the crashes had started before then. I'm running 10.5.4. Apart from this issue it's a fantastic machine, but with this issue it's like having a ferrari that stalls every few hundred yards.
is anyone else having similar crashes? If so, please post details of spec of machine and sofware / hardware in use when it happens so that we can try and work out what is causing them and fix it.
    many thanks,
    Rog.

Run Disk Warrior. Don't just restart and use the verify option in Disk Utility, boot from another drive.
RAM. USB devices. almost anything should be suspect.
Try setting up an emergency boot drive. OS X doesn't repair itself all that well, Disk Utility doesn't find as many errors, or fix, as 3rd party tools.
I would delete extensions.mkext and caches folders (not home caches), turn off journaling before repair, then turn on after. And run all the tests in Disk Warrior or other program, not just directory rebuild, scan all the files too.

  • Mac pro boot camp partition cloned to MBP?

i have a 200 GB mac pro boot camp partition with windows 7 on it and between setting it up and getting all my software customized it has been like doing time in a soviet gulag.
if i create a 200 GB partition on my MBP can i clone this from one machine to another?
it would save me a heck of a lot of time and aggravation
    TIA
p.s not sure if this makes a difference but my mac pro is a first generation deal that required amy burning a image to disk or something along those lines...

Do you know what I do to get 10.5?
Purchase it if the computer doesn't include it.
Also, I don't understand why the drivers are going to be on older software that doesn't have Boot Camp bundled with it.
The drivers are not on a Mac OS X 10.4 CD or DVD. They are on the Mac OS X 10.5 DVD.
Leopard has Boot Camp bundled with it doesn't it? Isn't part of the deal upgrading and improving the drivers?
    Yes.
You say in the above "or use up a Windows installation"
This only applies if the Windows disk or license agreement allows you to create a limited number of installations.
Are you saying here that I could also reformat the drive with XP on it?
You could, but there is little reason to do so.
Do I have to reconfigure my workspaces if I do the second option above?
If you erase the Windows partition, yes.

  • Mac Pro Boot Camp Upgrade to Leopard

    Hi All.
Can anyone please point me to a good source or give advice on upgrading my MacPro with Boot Camp (WinXP) to Leopard?
I've got 2-500 GB Drives with one dedicated solely to the Mac and one dedicated solely to XP. I also have three externals that are variously formatted (one is a "swamp drive" that can be read and written to from both OS'es).
Are there any issues that might come up?
Am I burning another install of WinXP by upgrading?
Should I dedicate a half day to this? A full day?
    Thanks for any assistance,
    Jonathan

You must use the Windows formatter to format your Windows partition NTFS. Please be sure you select the Windows partition otherwise you might end up formatting your OS X partition NTFS.

  • Mac Pro Boot Problems After 10.6.2 Update

After installing the latest version of snow leopard I am now having boot problems on my mac pro.
    Symptoms;
-Screen resolution is incorrect at apple splash screen.
-Takes a lot longer than usual to boot.
-Once booted the blue tooth magic mouse isn't imediately reckonised, takes a while to find that.
-Once the mouse is finally reckonised it can move around but can't click on anything or bring up the dock. Tried a wired mouse, had the same problem.
-The keyboard is also not appearing to do anything, none of the shortcuts or quick keys work..
Had exactly the same problem after 3 restarts but on the 4th after leaving it for a good 20-30minutes it setled down and everything was working okay. However this is a recurring problem as I had the same thing yesterday...
I have a my 10.5.8 system backed up on an external so I am running from that at the moment. Don't want to go back to snowy til these problems are solved.
Any help will be greatly appreciated!
    Martin

Try Safe Mode (It will take more time to startup in Safe Mode because it runs a directory check.)

If you just got it back and it isn't fixed or something else is wrong with it take it back and have them do the repair correctly.

  • Mac Pro having issues with widgets after booting in 64-bit mode

I tried the temp 64-bit boot (holding down 6 and 4 on startup), Mac Pro boots fine. I've noticed a difference in how my system runs n 64-bit. Much peppier. But the one thing I've noticed is that widgets are coming up strange. More specifically, The Weather Network, Conversion, and Translate widgets. The letters and numbers are coming up as outlined boxes. The drop down menus still work, the names just don't come up. ie. In the Conversion widget, the drop down menu name is boxes, but when you click on it, you can see the names of the selections. But as soon as you choose one, the letters turn to boxes.
I've restarted my computer to boot back in 32-bit, and don't see the same issues. Is anyone aware of this, what's causing it, and if there is a fix? Thanks.

    HI Eric,
Some widgets and browser plugins as well such as Flash aren't supported in 64-bit. Some widgets were originally written for PowerPC platforms.
Flash Player support on 64-bit operating systems

  • Mac Pro - Holding option doesn't display startup manager

I have a late 2008 Mac Pro, Ive been running OSX 10.8.5 and Mavericks (on separate partitions). Now out of nowhere holding down option doesn't bring up my startup manager. I can access both OS's by changing the startup disk in system preferences, but I'd love to get the startup manager fixed.
I have tried reseting the SMC (by unplugging it for like a minute) and resetting the PRAM/ NVRAM by holding down Command + Option + R + P; however resting the PRAM doesn't seem to be working. The startup chime happens once and then after about thirty seconds it boots into the recovery partition.
    Thanks in advance!

I had this problem with my 2009 Mac Pro with OS X Yosemite. The problem was fixed for me after removing two of my ram sticks, resetting the PRAM three times in a row (wait to hear chime, then wait for restart, do this three times) and booting up. There are some additional firmware settings that are reset when you remove ram. I replaced the ram, and now my startup disk menu always appears. Googling "how to reset firmware password on mac pro" will give you solutions that also solve the missing startup manager problem. Best of luck to you!

  • I own a late 2009 Macbook Pro, and it keeps freezing after OSX Lion installation.

I own a late 2009 Macbook Pro, and it keeps freezing after OSX Lion installation.  I will post my computer's 'specs' below.  I installed Lion, from Snow Leopard, through the App store.  The first week, it worked like a dream, and was loving my brand new computer, or so it seemed.  I then began to run into problems, and I can't confirm this 100%, but I believe it was after I updated from 10.7.1, to 10.7.2.
The freezes are sporatic at best, and cannot be narrowed down to one app.  I googled the issue about two weeks ago, and found a fix involving a temporary log-in, verifying the disk, restarting the computer holding CMD+R, and repairing the disk from there.  That fixed the problem.  For about three or four days.  From there I brought my laptop to Best Buy, where I purchased the computer (start the groans, my dad wanted the accidental damage, and he was paying, there was no argument).  My warranty there was still good, but all they were offering was to check my hard-drive, and possibly ship it out.  That would not be good for me, as I am a High School student, who works online.
So I then decided to go to the Apple store, see what they said.  They said a bunch of people had this problem, it would cost a lot to fix, as I would need a new Logic Board.  This did not make any sense to me, as I knew it was Lion's fault, so why would they not make the L-2009MBP Logic Board compatible, and why are only a few people having this problem, well a lot more than a few, but I mean not everyone.
So I asked a friend about it, and we decided to run a back up, and erase the computer, and re-install Lion.  Figuring maybe my data was corrupted during install.  This helped for a day or two, and happened again.  So this time, we backed up only files (music, pics, documents, etc.,) and did a fresh install.  I got my computer back last night.  Now, I am not saying that didn't help.  Previously I would have frozen about 18 times well writing this, but I have not frozen once (hopefully I didn't just jinx myself).  I have gone from about one freeze every 10-15 minutes (sometimes worse), to about one every 1-3 hours.  Which, let's be honest is still a lot.
So, before I just decide to go and revert to Snow Leopard on my merry way, I ask, do any of you have any other ideas?  Or guarenteed fixes?  I know a guarentee is a hard thing to ask for, but I am desperate, my teachers are getting angry with me for not sending work, and I know this would help a lot of people.  Thank you to those who read through my whole spiel, and thank you to those who will help me!
[Ps, while I am somewhat of a noob, I know my way around a computer, so any help, or knowledge you could bestow upon me is awesome.  Especially DIY fixes.  (if your only advice is, don't buy a mac at Best Buy, don't bother commenting)]
    Macbook Pro
    15-inch, 2.53GHz, Mid 2009
Processor:  2.53 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    Memory:  4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3
Graphics:  NVIDIA GeForce 9400M 256 MB
    Software:  Mac OS X Lion 10.7.2 (11C74)

Once it is downloaded you need to restart the computer if it does not restart automatically. When it next starts up you should note a progress bar appearing below the Apple logo. When done the computer will restart once more. The new firmware should now be installed.

  • I have a mac book pro with Boot Camp that also runs windows.  I upgraded to Lion and somehow it crashes the mac side peridoically.  I am told I need to "clean" it and reinstall lion using the recovery drive.  will that delete the windows partition too??

I have a mac book pro with Boot Camp that also runs windows.  I upgraded to Lion and now the mac side crashes/freezes periodically, especially iphoto.  I am told by the genius' that I probably need to "clean" it and reinstall lion using the "recovery drive" which resets everything back to default and reinstalls the lion operating system.  My question is will this also delete the "windows" partition drive and all that data too.  If so that will be a huge pain in the ___ to back up and reinstall boot camp and windows. I want to shoot the lion.

There is no system like Acronis for the Mac platform. You can try using the buiilt in Disk Utility to create an Image of the complete Mac drive but I have found that this does not work very well as on tryiing to restore it gives errors sometimes.
You can use SuperDuper or Carbon Copy Cloner to create a bootable Clone of your system partition. But that is only for the System partition and not the complete drive.
If you use Boot Camp to install Windows on your Mac neither of those two programs will clone the Windows side.
Neither will Disk utility as Mac's can not create or write to a NTFS partition. So some other program is need for that.

  • Mac Pro boot drive migration advice needed.

I have a new Mac Pro.  I would like to simply pull the boot HD of my old MP (a 1.1), and stick it in the new one (a 5.1 hex).  Bad idea?

I did what you're asking about using the same hardware and found that it booted just fine. However, I immediately ran a Lion upgrade and that Lion boot disk has run like a champ ever since. Since I was careful not to let software update do over my printer drivers, I also managed to keep some Epson legacy drivers that made the printer that worked on the 1,1 still usable. And that method also retained most of my software registrations so I didn't have to deal with the vendors.
However, if you want to keep Snow Leopard, I'd suggest after booting, immediately running the 10.6.8 combo updater, which might make the 1,1 System software more compatible with the 5,1 machine. That assumes that your new Mac is old enough to have been delivered with Snow Leopard on it, since there's some question if the Mac Pro's with Lion have been "fixed" to not accept a Snow Leopard install.

  • Why can't I open and retrieve my files from iPhoto and my address book after importing the files from my Power mac G5 to my new Mac Pro? I get a warning that says the new OS on my Pro doesn't open files from a Power Mac. Any idea how I can fix this?

For your addressbook, export the files to vCard on the PowerMac, then bring them over to your Mac Pro. For your iPhoto, copy the Users -> yourname -> Pictures folder to your Desktop on the Mac Pro, and open iPhoto on the Mac Pro holding the command and option keys.  Select the library file from that Pictures folder and open it.  It should import all the pictures into iPhoto as part of the rebuild process.  Other PowerPC to Intel migration issues are covered here: https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-2295
