Mac Pro Boot Problems After 10.6.2 Update

After installing the latest version of snow leopard I am now having boot problems on my mac pro.
Symptoms;
-Screen resolution is incorrect at apple splash screen.
-Takes a lot longer than usual to boot.
-Once booted the blue tooth magic mouse isn't imediately reckonised, takes a while to find that.
-Once the mouse is finally reckonised it can move around but can't click on anything or bring up the dock. Tried a wired mouse, had the same problem.
-The keyboard is also not appearing to do anything, none of the shortcuts or quick keys work..
Had exactly the same problem after 3 restarts but on the 4th after leaving it for a good 20-30minutes it setled down and everything was working okay. However this is a recurring problem as I had the same thing yesterday...
I have a my 10.5.8 system backed up on an external so I am running from that at the moment. Don't want to go back to snowy til these problems are solved.
Any help will be greatly appreciated!

Try Safe Mode (It will take more time to startup in Safe Mode because it runs a directory check.)

Mac Pro boot problem-Get "I have no name!" error message after possible KP

I think I'm having a kernel panic... and trying to keep from doing so myself
3GHz Mac Pro/4GB RAM, 250GB boot drive and three 400GB drives as a RAID for video captures.
I'm still in the process of getting the machine set up with software.
Demo machine from an Apple Authorized VAR that has been running in his office for several weeks. Had installed Final Cut Studio Monday, allowed Software Update to update the Apple software, including the OS.
Edited quite happily with FCP on a multiclip project... and did other things over the last several days.
Had no problems until a couple of hours ago after adding a number of fonts... which may turn out to be part of the problem... or not.
Rebooted the machine, and after what seemed like a VERRRRRRY long time of gray screen with spinning gear icon, the screen goes black with a cursor in the upper left corner.
About :30 later, text appears: "3Ghz-MacPro:/ I have no name!#" followed maybe ten seconds later by "SIOCPROTOATTACH_IN6: en0 error17" and "SIOCPROTOATTACH_IN6: en1 error17"
Screen clears back to cursor... then "3Ghz-MacPro:/ I have no name!#" reappears... and eventually the cycle starts again.
I would infer that en0 and en1 are the two ethernet ports.
I've popped the install disc in, booted to it (which took a while to do) and used Disk Utility to verify the disk. No problems found. Repaired it anyway.
Verified permissions, which found a couple of issues in the library with some files not essential to booting. Repaired those. Rebooted.
Same cycle as above with "no name."
Ran Apple Hardware test (the quick one) and it found no hardware problems.
Am waiting to see whether the AppleCare TechTool Deluxe will boot. Spinning gear continues as I write this (7-8 minutes??)... now wondering whether it's 10.4.x for Intel Macs as it spins.
After waiting a while... decided to go back to the install disk and see whether I can install 10.4.7 to a handy FireWire drive and boot from that...
then remove (or turn off with FontBook) all the fonts I just installed and see whether it'll boot from the internal.
More later. Am watching e-mail on another machine so feel free to offer suggestions.

3GHz Mac Pro-1GHz eMac-G3 400MHz Lombard Mac OS X (10.4.8)

I installed 10.4.7 onto the RAID so I could see whether it would boot OK, and to swap font folders out so that only the OS installed ones (from the RAID install) were present on the boot's original install.
Booted from the RAID just fine... and was able to do the font folder swap in the main font and user font folders.
Trying to then boot from the boot disk didn't make a difference. Same kernel panic with the text as described before.
Did an "archive and install" onto the boot disk and it came up fine on the fresh OS.
Updated QT and then the OS to 10.4.8 using Software Update (which I understand from the Apple info site is the "delta" version. Combo is also available, and it updates any 10.4.x version to 10.4.8)
Moved over some items in various library folders from the previous system to make the ProApps happy (only Motion's not working) and will get a project out the door today.
Will ultimately wipe the drive and go from scratch on the OS and Apps again.
Looking forward to half a day of intimacy with my Mac Pro and software disks this weekend.

Would still like to know what happened under the hood to cause the problem in the first place... so I can avoid doing anything I might have done to cause the problem... or to avoid other snafus.

Mac Pro Boot Problems. Kona 3?

I'm having booting problems with a Mac Pro. It's got a kona 3 card in one of the PCI slots, and we've been tinkering with it to try to get the audio to work right. However, I've been having huge problems whenever I try to restart the computer. After hitting the power button, or telling it to restart the screen goes to black and sometimes I hear a chime. However, the computer does not boot any further. Then, after holding the power button down and restarting the computer, I can sometimes get the computer to boot normally.
I suspect the Kona card is causing some of the problems. I have multiple hard drives on the system, and I have the ability to boot onto two separate drives in 10.5.8. Both drives are having the same problems.
it's a 2x2.8ghz quad-core Intel Xeon with 10gb of ram. The Kona card is in slot 2. Slot 3 has also been tried, but similar problems remained.

removed kona card. uninstalled aja programs. restart problems still persisting.

Mac Pro Boot slow after Leopard Update and Carbon Copy Cloner

I just purchased a 1TB Internal hard drive - Seagate Barracuda 7200rpm - and used Carbon Copy Cloner to clone my original hard drive (which is running Tiger). Everything seems to be normal, except the the long boot up process. The desktop appears, the dock appears, and then there is a long pause of 20 to 30 seconds before the drives mount and and the desktop folders appear. I have 10 gigs of RAM, I have rebuilt the Directory with Disk Warrior 4.1, and also repaired the disk permissions (although some of them state that they can't be repaired). When I reboot from my original 250 Gig hard drive, the boot is lightning fast. Any thoughts? I have many third party software programs installed and am trying to avoid a fresh Leopard Install. Thanks, this is my first post!

this may happen on the first boot on a cloned drive because the system has to rebuild various caches that are not cloned. it should be back to normal boot speed after that.

Optical Audio not working on 2006 Mac Pro 1,1 after 10.6.7 update

Hi all,
I have no digital audio output on my 2006 Mac Pro after I updated to 10.6.7. System Preferences recognizes the output but their is nothing coming out. The digital audio port goes from steady red at startup to dark, indicating that it is not receiving anything. I have switched to another digital audio cable with no effect whatsoever.
I reset the SMC with no effect. I have read online that other users are having this issue as well. I appreciate any input or insight into the issue.

It has been 3 months and the issue still persists and has not gone away. I agree with pantufl that my Mac has become buggier since 10.6.7. The doc I read and reread didn't do anything except change the frequency rate. There is still no sound.
The update to 10.6.8 didn't resolve anything except prepping it for 10.7
This is extremely frustrating especially since I recently upgraded to a 55" Samsung LED LCD monitor and Onkyo HT S7300 system. I also recently upgraded to EyeTV HD and use my Mac as my HTPC.
I will try the feedback post to see what Apple has planned, if anything.

Mac Pro Boot Problems

I think I've got a failing drive, but I'm not sure it's not something else and could use some advice. Nothing has changed on my computer/configuration, but suddenly I'm having a problem booting: I can only get to the gray screen (no Apple logo). Booting up while using the "Option-Command-P-R" to reset PRAM allows me to boot normally... but by the next time I need to boot, it's back to the problem.
I have 3 Samsung Spinpoint F1 1TB drives in the computer like this:
Bay 1: Boot Drive (single partition, 1TB)
Bay 2: Time Machine backup drive (single partition, 1 TB)
Bay 3: Internal Backup & Important files (two partitions, 500GB each... Internal Backup created using SuperDuper!)
If I run SuperDuper and update the Internal Backup partition, then set the Startup Drive to be the Internal Backup partition, the computer boots repeatedly without trouble (I've run this way for several days in a row without any bootup trouble).
Yesterday I erased the drive in Bay 1 (using the Zeroing option to identify bad sectors) and it showed about 600MB in use (bad sectors?). I restored it (using SuperDuper) from the Internal Backup... and everything seemed great (much faster, etc.). Until this morning... when, once again, the computer wouldn't boot from Drive 1 without resetting the PRAM.
The 8GB RAM in the computer is after-market (OWC brand) memory, but doesn't appear to be causing any other trouble (application errors, or anything like that).
Sounds like a dying drive, right? Or is there something else I should be testing?

Just as an update... I have now run the Apple Hardware Test (twice) and I bought TechTool Pro 5 and ran all of the viable tests on the drive. Nothing was found.
Still... the Samsung drive in Bay 1 won't reliably boot. Sometimes it will. Other times, it's just a gray screen (no Apple logo, no spinning progress indicator).

Boot problem after 10.4.5 update

I installed the 10.4.5 update on my new iMac Core Duo, rebooted when it asked me to. Upon reboot now I just get the boot screen followed by a blue screen with a cursor and it just stays there. I read you can fix this by going into Safe Mode.
Anyone know the steps to fix this?

Ideapad S450 booting problem after windows 8.1 update

Hi.. I have a Lenovo Ideapad S450 with windows8. Yesterday while updating to Windows 8.1, it got shut down. When I switched it ON, it started booting continuously. All it displays is 'Lenovo' logo with a progressing bar, shut downs and starts booting again. Please help me if there is any way to sort it out other than System restoration. Thanks.

The point is that the touchpad of Qosmio X70-A series supports some additional features.
One of the features is the Gesture feature. I would recommend disabling it.
I found very nice HowTo document about the Touchpad settings and how to change the Synaptic options.

Mountain lion on Mac Pro...after boot camp can't get back into OS x!!!!

Not sure what is going on?!?!? I sucessfully set up windows on bay 3 of my mac pro following the Apple documentaion....success! However, when I go and try to boot back into OS X, I can't. All I get is the chime, then a white screen and pause. If I let go of any of the key combos (see below), it boots right back into windows.
List of things I can't do on boot are :
- hold shift and go into safe mode
- hold Command + R and go into recovery mode
- hold alt and look for boot drived
The only thing that I have succesfully done is gone into target disk mode and checked the drives on my macbook pro. They seem fine in disk utility.
Please help! I don't want to be doomed to life with only windows 7 on my mac pro.

As an ammendment, on my macbook pro, I have succesfully mounted my MAC PRO boot drive (mac pro is in target disk mode). Everything looks fine. So summary is...
-Can't use any of the options to force a log in to my mac pro.
-I can mount my mac pro boot drive to my macbook pro and boot it there
-allways defaults to windows.
Any knowledge (even obvious) is much appreciated.

First generation Mac pro booted into utilities and HD recovery, any idea why?

My first generation Mac pro booted into utilities and HD recovery when I restared after installing Autodesk sketchbook pro. This isnt the first time this has happened but last time I was not trying to install any software. Fortunatly, I have time machine backups and therefore have managed to recover the HD to a recent date and I intend to do a complete system check when it has finished. The first time this happened I didnt think much of it but now it has happened a second time i'm becoming a little concerned, any idea why this has happened?

I did this the first time it happened so I know that its not that i have the wrong startup disk selected. However, after the recovery had completed I tried the installation again and this time everything went smootly. so as of right now I dont have a problem. Thank you very much for your time and help.

Mac Pro boot sound on Cinema display

Is it possible to run the Mac pro boot sound on my cinema display instead of the Mac pro's build in speakers?
My macbook sounds more agressive than that Mac badboy .

I think this has been a problem since the beige G3 and an early speaker-equipped Mac display.
The startup chime is produced long, long before the display is configured to accept the data and make it into speaker noises. It is near impossible to make the startup chime come out the display speakers.

Mac Pro boot loop

I have a Mac Pro 3,1 2008 8-Core. I was recently hit with a storm and the power when out when the Mac Pro was still on, I unplugged it shortly after. A few days later I got power back and plugged it back in, but noticed that every time I turn it on and hear the boot tone the Mac Pro restarts shortly after that. Then goes into a boot loop where it constantly restarts then shuts off after a while. What could be wrong? It was working perfectly fine before the power went out from my house.

Hold down Option as you start up. This brings up the Startup Manager, whose code is all in ROM. It will draw an icon for each potentially bootable Volume and invite you to choose one and proceed.
If you have it, choose Recovery_HD. Otherwise, insert your Installer/Utilities DVD (the eject key is "live" after all Icons have been drawn). Answer only the "what language" question and wait a quarter minute for the MenuBar to be drawn. Choose Disk Utility off the Utilities Menu.
Select your drive by Hardware-name and check its SMART status for "Verified".
Select your Macintosh_HD Volume and ( Repair Disk).

Mac pro wireless problem osx 10.9.4

Had wireless problem after 10.9.4 update.
Various things it may say: move router closer, or invalid password, or time out.
Tried all the solutions normally provided. Restarting, running this, doing the airport tests, more this and that, etc... no go bro! Searches returned similar problems but no real answers.
SO....
I changed router channel from 6 to 7, you can change yours to what ever channel you like, and restarted router.
In NETWORK preferences the wireless light was orange and not connected. Network connection shows my network though.
I then went into NETWORK > ASSIST ME > DIAGNOSTICS >The Network Status light for Wi-Fi was green but all others below it were red.
I then typed in the name of network connection and the password in the wifi settings and it said wrong password, I did it again and a drop down box said "network changes detected"
Wahoooo That is the ticket!
Then re-enter the Connection Name and Password and it should connect.
All the lights should now be green on the Network Status (ISP, Internet,etc)
Lucky Me!
Question is:
How do I manually get my connection back rather than hoping and praying the Mac Pro will finally detect something different and then allow the connection.

Try updating to 10.9.5. I had similar problems before updating.

Mac Pro Fan Problem

Hi, I have been having some problems with a Mac Pro I have been working with. At the Start-up the Fan goes to top speed and once it logs-in the fan is still pretty loud. I've checking the Temperature of all the computer parts via a Temperature Diode, and its normal and not high. After searching the internet for hours looking for posts that were for the Mac Pro and not for the MacBook Pro (which comes up in about all the searches using the words Mac Pro Fan Problem) and I found some software all of which is not for Mac Pro's. Is there any application I can run do reduce the RPM of the Fans, Reset the Fan Speeds to only turn on when it get hot, or something along those lines.

Thats odd, seeing as Apple have it listed in the Support article:
To reset the SMC on a Mac Pro:
1) From the Apple menu, choose Shut Down (or if the computer is not responding, hold the power button until it turns off).
2) Unplug all cables from the computer, including the power cord and any display cables.
3) Wait at least fifteen seconds.
4) Plug the power cord back in, making sure the power button is not being pressed at the time. Then reconnect your keyboard and mouse to the computer.
5) Press the power button to start up your computer.
It does exactly the same thing as the SMC_RST button, simply by removing all power from the system. I would assume the reason for this would be that the SMC settings are stored in RAM, which is erased once the power is removed from the board, hence the minimum 15 secs wait which gives time for the capacitors in the power supply and system to discharge.
So yeah, it does do the trick, or has done for me in the past a few times.

Mac pro boot camp partition cloned to MBP?

i have a 200 GB mac pro boot camp partition with windows 7 on it and between setting it up and getting all my software customized it has been like doing time in a soviet gulag.
if i create a 200 GB partition on my MBP can i clone this from one machine to another?
it would save me a heck of a lot of time and aggravation

Also, I don't understand why the drivers are going to be on older software that doesn't have Boot Camp bundled with it.
The drivers are not on a Mac OS X 10.4 CD or DVD. They are on the Mac OS X 10.5 DVD.
