Mac Pro Boot slow after Leopard Update and Carbon Copy Cloner

I just purchased a 1TB Internal hard drive - Seagate Barracuda 7200rpm - and used Carbon Copy Cloner to clone my original hard drive (which is running Tiger). Everything seems to be normal, except the the long boot up process. The desktop appears, the dock appears, and then there is a long pause of 20 to 30 seconds before the drives mount and and the desktop folders appear. I have 10 gigs of RAM, I have rebuilt the Directory with Disk Warrior 4.1, and also repaired the disk permissions (although some of them state that they can't be repaired). When I reboot from my original 250 Gig hard drive, the boot is lightning fast. Any thoughts? I have many third party software programs installed and am trying to avoid a fresh Leopard Install. Thanks, this is my first post!

this may happen on the first boot on a cloned drive because the system has to rebuild various caches that are not cloned. it should be back to normal boot speed after that.

  • Considering FileVault usage on an iMac with OSX 10.6.7. Wanting to know more about strengths and weaknesses of Filevault with Time Machine, Parallels and Carbon Copy Cloner. Any negatives to consider before flipping the switch?

I'm considering FileVault usage on an iMac with OSX 10.6.7. Wanting to know more about strengths and weaknesses of Filevault with Time Machine, Parallels and Carbon Copy Cloner. Any negatives to consider before flipping the switch? Any information ?
    Would specifically like to know:
Filevault impact on performance and application usability.
TIme machine impacts, and whether TIme Machine volume will also be secure?
Will a Cloned copy made with CCC be  bootable, or usable?
Any other negatives to consider before turning this thing on?
    Thanks,

Filevault impact on performance and application usability.
FileVault encrypts the user's home directory only - it is basically an encrypted disk image that is automatically opened when you log in and closed when you log out. It does cause disk accesses to be a bit slower so it isn't a good idea to use an encrypted account with sound or video or large graphics files. I have no experience with it with Parallels Desktop but suspect that you'd notice a bit of a slowdown. Note: in the User's directory you'll see a Shared Folder. Since FV only encrypts the user's directory you can put data you don't need encrypted in this shared folder which won't be encrypted.
TIme machine impacts, and whether TIme Machine volume will also be secure?
There are issues with TM and FV but how extensive they are with Snow Leopard I can't say, once I realized that TM and FV hadn't substantially changed between 10.5 and 10.6 I stopped dealing with it. When FV and TM were first introduced my testing led me to recommend using CCC or SuperDuper! for backing up.
Will a Cloned copy made with CCC be  bootable, or usable?
    Yes
Any other negatives to consider before turning this thing on?
Since FV is nothing more than a disk image - and disk images can fail - there are several problems with FV in my opinion. If an encrypted disk image fails it isn't possible to access any of that data. If you don't have a recent (undamaged) backup of the disk image and/or recent backup of the data within the disk image you are in a world of hurt. This isn't just a warning of possibility - this is a real danger that I've seen all too often at the shop where I have worked part time for a number of years.
At this time I strongly recommend that people who have sensitive data keep that sensitive data segregated from their general data and encrypt only the sensitive data or use other methods of locking it down such as saving on an external drive that is kept in a safe. Call me paranoid but I don't even keep all my sensitive data in one encrypted disk image. I use multiple disk images and keep multiple sequential backups. That way I might someday find that my up-to-date investments disk image won't mount but (a) I can go back a week to a backup and (b) that won't impact my up-to-date business records because those are in a different disk image

  • Mountain Lion is missing, after installing an external hard drive and Carbon Copy Clone.

I have a mid-2007 desktop iMac Model MA877LL, 2.4 ghz/1gb/320gb, with 4 GB memory, upgraded to Mountain Lion 9/7/2012 at an Apple store (now 10.8.5).  I just installed a new external hard drive Fantom Drive 1T G-Force Mega Disk Firewire 800, then installed Carbon Copy Clone successfully.  However, I could not get the clone to boot from the backup volume.  Mountain Lion showed in both Macintosh HD and External Hard Drive at that point.  After working through many steps with CCC, trying to get it to boot, the final suggestion was to try installing Mountain Lion onto the backup disk via the Mac App Store Installer.   As my Mountain Lion was installed at an Apple store, there's no record of it on line and I can't find an installer, although I've been doing updates as they're issued.  Per article, "OS X:  Installing OS X on an external volume", I erased and reformatted the storage device.  Now, checking my Macintosh HD, Mountain Lion is gone.  How do I get it back?

Are you saying that your internal HD doesn't have an operating system on it either, meaning you can't boot your iMac at all? Or that the external was also named "Macintosh HD" in which case, having been erased and reformatted (hopefully with a GUID partition table), you'll need to clone your internal to it once again.

  • Reinstalling and Carbon Copy Cloner

I mistakenly posted my question to an 'answered' thread, so will re-post it here. Apologies for the duplication!
Hello Good people on this Mac Forum.
I need your help. Here's the situation:
I'm running OS 10.3.9 on my powerbook G4, which I divided into 5 partitions when I first set it up, a couple of years ago now.
The trouble is that as I grow and my computer grows with me, the partition where I store my hard drive files just isn't big enough to keep up (I have less than 1GB free on this drive and obviously keep getting 'full' messages).
I've already moved most of my applications out onto another partition (months ago now), which has caused various small problems (e.g. I can't open PhotoShop or Dreamweaver files without opening the application first), but the hard drive keeps exanding as I receive emails and blah blah and now it's to the point where I don't even have room on my hard drive partition to receive a podcast, or download a new album to iTunes.
I have plenty of room on other partitions, so my thought is to get rid of the partitions altogether and open my computer up into one large hard drive disc again.
The folks at AppleCare have told me I need to boot from my Software Install and Restore disc and erase the whole disc; then go through the re-installation process.
The problem is that installing from my 'Software Install and Restore' disc will take me back to where I was when I bought the computer (Jaguar), while I am currently running Panther with the benefit of all those years of software updates, etc. I would like to save myself the time and trouble of redoing all this work if at all possible.
I've backed up all my current files on an external drive, using Carbon Copy Cloner (which is partitioned to exactly mirror my computer). What I'd like to do is just get a clean slate on my computer and transfer everything from the external hard drive over onto it. In other words I want to have one drive on my computer, and keep everything exactly as I have it now (sans the partitions).
Has anyone done this before? The AppleCare folks can't help me with the transfer because they are officially unable to advise on anything involving third party software (in this case CCC). They suggested I come here with my question, where people are not constrained by the same rules.
I had originally imagined I could just go through the installation process with my 'install and restore' disc, and then drag and drop (or clone) my backed up files over the new install, replacing them, but they said there might be problems with that. Has anyone had experience with this?
Another solution might be to erase my computer's hard disc, and then boot up from my external drive and clone the backed up files directly onto the empty disc. Would that work? I'm not sure how to boot up from my external drive, or make sure that those files are bootable, however.
Unfortunately I can't find my Panther OS install disc (it's somewhere in a box in the basement that I haven't unpacked since moving), which I'm sure would make the whole thing easier.
Any thoughts or advice for would be very much appreciated.

    Hi Grant,
    Thanks for replying!
I've done it several times. The only thing that I'm
not sure of is how you go from several partitions
    back to one
This is what I need to do, yes. Are you saying you haven't actually done it? (I too have gone from one to several partitions, and also from several back to one -once- but I didn't need to replace files from an external back up that time.)
(your backup must be to several different
    partitions, right?)
Yes, my back up is an exact mirror of my current set up, with the same partitions.
Before you do this, make sure that your backup on the
    xternal drive:
    1. Is on a firewire, not USB drive
    Right - it is.
    2. You marked "make bootable" on CCC
    I did that, yes.
    3. Make sure it actually boots
How would I check that? I don't know how to start up from the external hard drive.
All that said, there are advantages to doing a clean
    install.
I'm not sure what you mean by this - do you mean just install through my 'install and Restore' CD?
Its not a bad idea, so long as you can back
up and restore just your files. Most of the updates
will happen automatically (except apps and 10.3.x),
But these are the updates I'm concerned about. There are a LOT of them - I am a web designer and regularly use a LOT of applications. I don't want to reload every one of these, and go through all the updates again. I have deadlines to meet and need to spend the shortest possible time on all this and be safe and smart about it.
and you know that its clean and uncorrupted.
Nothing is corupted now, that I know of. That isn't really the problem.
    But you
can always do that later, after the clone, if you
    have a problem with it.
I'm not sure what you're referring to here, but I do appreciate the support, especially since it sounds like you use CCC. Can you tell me know to check to see if my backed up systems partition (on the external hard drive) is bootable? Thanks so much.

  • Will the new 2012 Mac pros boot on Snow Leopard (10.6.8, installed on a HD in a 2008 Mac pro and then moved to the 2012 model).

I keep getting fuzzy answers on this (firmware, future updates, etc.). I can make a 2 partition HD on my 2008 (3.1), with Snow Leopard 10.6.8 on 1, and Lion on the other, and then put this HD in the 2012 3.06ghz. Will it work? (It does on the 2010 2.93ghz).

Tony https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4051765?tstart=0 Never got back and until someone who received a "new" Mac Pro 5,1 (5,2? just for laughs?) to know.
Apple ties OS build and fiirmware and Mac ID.
It should after all nothing really changed. In this case it has the same latest firmware that shipped iwth some 2010s
We had discussions about this when Mac Pro 2010 started shipping with Lion last... summer/fall.
A true Lion only system ships not only without DVDs, and with Lion, but can do a network install (it grabs a small boot loader) to pull down the installer and has enough code in the firmware. Same with AHT.
    A. It (10.6.8) works and you are fine
    B. It works only with Lion.
What is the real question? do you need to run 10.6.8?
There is a 1/20 chance too that it has a later build of 10.7.4, right?

  • Mac Pro Boot Problems After 10.6.2 Update

After installing the latest version of snow leopard I am now having boot problems on my mac pro.
    Symptoms;
-Screen resolution is incorrect at apple splash screen.
-Takes a lot longer than usual to boot.
-Once booted the blue tooth magic mouse isn't imediately reckonised, takes a while to find that.
-Once the mouse is finally reckonised it can move around but can't click on anything or bring up the dock. Tried a wired mouse, had the same problem.
-The keyboard is also not appearing to do anything, none of the shortcuts or quick keys work..
Had exactly the same problem after 3 restarts but on the 4th after leaving it for a good 20-30minutes it setled down and everything was working okay. However this is a recurring problem as I had the same thing yesterday...
I have a my 10.5.8 system backed up on an external so I am running from that at the moment. Don't want to go back to snowy til these problems are solved.
Any help will be greatly appreciated!

Try Safe Mode (It will take more time to startup in Safe Mode because it runs a directory check.)

  • Mac is extremely slow after yosemite update, really need help. (Etrecheck inside).

After recently installing yosemite my mac been painfully unresponsive and slow. I cannot boot up in normal mode, i'm currently in safe mode.
What I have tried so far and what I know:
Initially thought filevault was the issue, I disabled encryption and now it says "decryption is paused" and hasn't resumed in days. Potentially is the issue.
I run a hardware diagnostic test using the hardware check within the macbook pro (booting up holding D) and the mac didn't identify any hardware issues.
I reinstalled yosemite (not a clean install) and the issue was not resolved.
I have completed a backup of my mac so all my data is secure.
Any help would be great, even just telling me how to turn on filevault will be helpful.

  • Mac Pro runs slow after upgrading to mavericks?

    I can't figure it out..
Been a mac user sinc Macintosh then mac plus.
First time i have no explanation.
I upgraded my 2010 Dual Quad Mac Pro 96gb ram, ran so very very fast with Sonnet 4 port eSATA and MOTU PCIE 424 card.
Ever since i upgraded it is so SLLLLOOOWWW!!. I have tired re-installing, contacted all the hardware vendors and software vendors, got all the updates.
I cant figure out why it is running like a 20 year old computer?. I get the wheel, Finder hangs allot, will not relaunch. I take out ALL THE THIRD PARTY CARDS, and boot, still runs like a turtle. Adobe creative suite slow, Aperature takes hrs to update library. Tried creating a new library. Still slow. Avid Media composer, Final Cut Pro X is so slow at rendering i can drive to Santa Cruz from Santa Barbara to MAvericks surf spot go surfing and come home to find out it is 95% done. Also copying large 20 gig folders from one internal to another takes hrs. used to take minuts.
I need help! It is so unpleasent using my mac pro now, , miserable user experience. I dread booting as it takes 5 min to go. I have dual monitors. Apple NVIDA card. could it be CUDA?  no updates availble. I removed all the third party cards, and nothing happens. Removed all usb, FW, etc pluged in usb mouse from Apple Factory.
What ever happend there must be a patch or fix? all of my friends with Macs all having same slow issue. Please offer some fixes.
    1. Is there a way to __Un-install Mavericks? and return my computer back to previous OS? without ruining or formating HD?
It seems like the only solution. I would Purchase a new MAc Pro, but none of my studio takes thunderbolt, and it is so exspensive i am cornerd. I would be so happy if i could just remove Mavericks, instead of taping aspirine all over my Macs. Please Apple send an update that fixes this. Just google it 100,00's of users? we all love Apple, we need you to help us help you! anyone? please help.
    Please help!!

    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.

If you have doubts, search this site for other discussions in which this procedure has been followed without any report of ill effects. If you can't satisfy yourself that the instructions are safe, don't follow them.
Here's a summary of what you need to do: Copy a line of text from this web page into the window of another application. Wait for the script to run. It usually takes a couple of minutes. Then paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page. The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. Details follow.
    4. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    5. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply.
    6. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking  anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in your browser, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    7. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
When you launch Terminal, a text window will open with a line already in it, ending either in a dollar sign ($) or a percent sign (%). If you get the percent sign, enter
    exec sh
in the window and press return. You should then get a new line ending in a dollar sign.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste (command-V). The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know your password, or if you prefer not to enter it, just press return three times at the password prompt.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that takes administrator privileges.
The test may take up to a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line "[Process completed]" to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report your results. No harm will be done.
    8. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
When you post the results, you might see the message, "You have included content in your post that is not permitted." It means that the forum software has misidentified something in the post as a violation of the rules. If it happens, please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
Note: This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

Anyone got an idea on how to fix the problem?

I have 8GB ram on a late 2009 MacBook Pro, which has weathered good times and bad.
Reboots are killing me.  It seems every root program has to do its thing all over again.  (The same is true of my more recent MB Air, but of course, it has only a couple RAM that can't be built up, so the effect is less pronounced.)
I also note -- having "upgraded" to Mavericks directly from Snow Leopard -- that iCloud slows everything down.  My Contacts (formerly Address Book, a perfectly good name) are atrocious, always requiring some sort of dishing information in and out with iCloud and ... well, it's just not pleasurable.
But this is progress, right?  At least the battery lasts longer to compensate for more wait time.

  • Will the 2012 Mac Pro boot from Snow Leopard?

I'm contemplating upgrading my 2008, 8 core intel mac and getting a refurbished 2012 12 core 2.4 ghz mac pro. My plan, regardless of what future mac I purchased, was to keep my old maching ONLY becuase there are times I need to access my old Retrospect backups. Retrospect only works in OS 10.6.8, that is, the version of Retrospect that allows me to access my crusty old backups ;-). These backups are old client projects and can generate me $ from time to time. Anyway, I was toying with the idea of getting a newer mac, and, in the event it would actually boot from this old hard drive with 10.6.7, I would then sell the old mac. Does anyone have the answer to this?

No. It can only boot from the OS X version it comes with. The 2012 MP requires a version of Lion. Snow Leopard does run on the 2010 model.

  • MacBook Pro boot failure after firmware update

    Hello,
I've had my MacBook Pro with a solid state harddrive about a month.  Tonight I did an update (including a firmware update) and it has failed to boot.  The fans run at full speed, but nothing boots.  The screen remains blank.  What can I do?

iTunes sound works - but no internet sound!!

This happens more than once (reoccurring). More often when rendering in After Effects. And I have another Log that is slightly different. I'm leaning towards a bad Ram module. But Everything was working fine prior to upgrade. If I'm not rendering in after Effects it seems like I can get some work done. Running 16Gb RAM.

  • My macbook pro 13'' boots very slow after mavericks update, and after booting its loads for a long time

Processor:     2.9 Ghz Intel Core i7
    Memory:        8GB 1600 MHz DDR3
    HDD:             1TB (5400rpm)
    Graphics:       Intel HD Graphics 4000
    OS:               OS X Mavericks (10.9.4)

These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
    Step 1
For this step, the title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
In the top right corner of the Console window, there's a search box labeled Filter. Initially the words "String Matching" are shown in that box. Enter "BOOT_TIME" (without the quotes.)
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Note the timestamps of the BOOT_TIME log messages, which refer to the times when the system was started. Now clear the search box and scroll back in the log to the last boot time when you had the problem. Select the messages logged after the boot, during the time something abnormal was happening. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
For example, if the problem is a slow startup taking three minutes, post the messages timestamped within three minutes   after the boot time, not before. Please include the BOOT_TIME message at the beginning of the log extract—not at the end.
If there are long runs of repeated messages, please post only one example of each. Don’t post many repetitions of the same message.
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.
Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
    Step 2
    In the Console window, select
DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION ▹ System Diagnostic Reports
(not Diagnostic and Usage Messages) from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
There is a disclosure triangle to the left of the list item. If the triangle is pointing to the right, click it so that it points down. You'll see a list of reports. A crash report has a name that begins with the name of the crashed process and ends in ".crash". A panic report has a name that begins with "Kernel" and ends in ".panic". Select the most recent of each. The contents of the report will appear on the right. Use copy and paste to post the entirecontents—the text, not a screenshot.
I know the report is long, maybe several hundred lines. Please post all of it anyway.
If you don't see any reports listed, but you know there was a crash or panic, you may have chosen Diagnostic and Usage Messages from the log list. Choose DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION instead.
In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.)
Please don’t post other kinds of diagnostic report—they're very long and rarely helpful.

  • Mac won't login after Leopard update

i recently ran the update for itunes and quicktime and it asked me to restart my computer. I did and everything looked fine. I try to log in and it would take me to the Setup Assint..the one you get when you are turning on your mac for the first time.
    what can i do?? thanks!

Try rebooting in safe mode. Restart and hold the shift key down when you hear the chime. You should then reach the login screen, and then choose restart from there. That has worked for most people.

  • TS1496 How does this work for a Mac Pro?  Just did an update and my iPod video click is no longer recognized by iTunes or in finder but shows do not disconnect.  What do I do?

I downloaded the latest update of iTunes 11.4 today - Columbus Day.  Went on to purchase songs.  Then attached classic iPod to sync.  upon attached usb to iPod, the "Do Not Disconnect" message appeared.  Waited a long time and iTunes would not recognize my iPod.  (10 minutes minimum.  Gave up counting)  Shut down iTunes and restarted.  Still no recognition.  Restarted computer - Wouldn't start.  Unplugged USB and then it started.  The only way to get computer to start up again was to unplug - now I'm worried that I've just screwed up my iPod.  Upon starting back up - plugged iPod back in - sell no recognition.  Am I up a creek with no paddle now?  My iPod- touch is recognized and I was able to update it successfully.  With that being said, it took a heck of a lot longer than it normally does post update.  Was this the update that no longer likes classic iPods?
I have a brain injury and the classic is helpful at night when I can't fall asleep and I can play soothing stuff to help calm my brain down.  The touch is way to bright and can cause lots of bad reactions due to light sensitivity - way too much blue light to trigger issues.  The click wheel doesn't take so many moves to get to what I need.
Thank you to anyone that can help save my classic.  medical bills are high and I can't afford to buy a new one.  Two hours later, my classic still says do not disconnect and my computer does not recognize.
Thank you to any one for the ability to provide insight and troubleshooting.
    pooped out.

    1. Try Resetting the iPod. Hold Select and Menu for 6-10 seconds - until you see the Apple Symbol.
    2. Use iPod Updater to restore your iPod to factory settings.
See if those two steps clear up your problem.
