Mac Pro computer crashes then heavy fan activity

My 2008 Mac pro has suddenly started to crash and then the fans come on very loudly.  I have been turning the computer off at this stage fearing possible trouble.  I have used Disk Warrior to write a new directory and thought after a day without a crash that all was well.  But it crashed again in the evening.  At the moment I am sending this message from the Mac Pro.  Tomorrow I will run the Apple hardware test to see if I have a failing piece of hardware but wondered if anyone has had the same problem.

Repairing your disk either with Disk Utility, or better yet as you have done with Disk Warrior is a great idea. The diagnostic is also helpful. Even if it does not find a problem, it gives you the feeling that things are basically OK.
Next thing to look at is whether all your memories are showing up at their proper sizes and with Status "OK", indicating single-bit errors are not occurring regularly:
Apple menu > About this Mac > ( More Info ) > Memory
Console.app can inspect the Substantial System logs looking for errors and crash reports. Sometimes those logs hold clues as to why things happened. Every entry is time-Stamped, so if you have another problem, write down the time it occurred, and you can chek in the log about that time to see if anything unusual was reported.

Os lion crashing on mac pro now and then after startup trying to open first app like safari, nothing seems to respond then I restart it and its ok. Then after many uses it does it again.

Take it to an Apple Store.

    Try option/command/R

  • Mac Pro freezes while asleep and fans go to high

I'm not sure if this is a problem specific to my Mac Pro Dual Quad Core MacPro3,1, but it has carried across an update to 10.6.5 and through a reinstall of Snow Leopard. Also, I don't have it on my MacBook Pro. So, I'm posting it in the Mac Pro forum.
Periodically (but now more frequently), when I go to my Mac Pro in the morning, after it has let itself go to sleep, the fans are on high and the machine won't wake up. I can't mount the machine's hard disk remotely from my MacBook Pro on the home network (which I usually can) and I have to hold the power switch down to force a restart. I've checked the Console logs (all messages) and the last message is usually sometime in the morning, sometimes as late as 5 or 6 am. But, there is no common thread to the last messages before the machine freezes, so I can't use that to identify what process was running when the machine froze.
This past weekend, I got up at 5:45 am and heard the fans running high and then went to watch the Formula 1 race on TV. The machine was frozen again when I got back to it at 8 am. So, the problem will happen whenever it wants, but only in the night (before 8 am and after midnight).
I've tried the following, with no success:
    • Reinstalled OS X 10.6 and followed the update path
    • Reset the SMC and PRAM
    • Rebooted the machine before going to bed, so that no user login process or software was running at the time of the freeze.
What is a good process to use for debugging this problem, from this point, since the Console Logs don't give me any consistent information? Is there a way to make the Console logs more verbose?
How can I get a list of all the maintenance processes that autostart on my machine at night? I'm assuming the problem is with a process installed by third party software, since I didn't clear the problem when I reinstalled a fresh copy of OS X.
Thanks, in advance, for your help.

I can't believe I missed this thread. I was sure I was the only one. This has been happening to me for months now, and of course out of warranty. I've tried so many things. Mac Pro Dual Core Intel. Fans go bananas for no discernible reason (according to Activity Monitor). I often return to an un-wakeable display despite the fans going full blast. Sometimes while I'm working, the thing just puts itself to sleep and doesn't want to wake up. Several times a week, the system hangs. (There's usually nothing complicated being done, although using iPhoto is pretty much guaranteed to freeze everything.) Almost always takes more than one hard restart in a row to get it back up, sometimes a DOZEN or more. Have no idea whether attempting a safe boot helps reduce the number of tries but it seems to. It's set never to sleep; I've reset the SMC and PRAM and deleted video preferences (see http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1573). The issue pre-dated installing Snow Leopard and was unchanged by it.
By the way, the computer is at its most silent now - 600rpm each on power supply and exhaust fans, and 500 each on CPU and expansion according to iStat - and it's still pretty loud. Anyone else have that issue?

The panic was caused by the MAXPower device or its software, maybe with help from one or more of the other third-party system modifications you've installed.
First check the manufacturer's website for an update. If there is none, or if it doesn't help, I suggest you remove the device, back up all data, and then remove the software according to the manufacturer's instructions. Reboot and see whether there's an improvement. If there isn't, post another panic report.

That is the distinctive panic report of an uncorrectable memory error.

machine-check is a Hardware problem. Memory problems often show error code 4 or 5, and are detected by MULTIPLE Processors at once. (a software problem would panic-out ONE Processor, and would not say Machine-check.
The Xeon Processor with Error Correcting Code memory on the Mac Pro stores additional bits with each word in memory, carefully computed so that if the word is read back with one bit wrong, the errant bit can be corrected by Hardware with essentially no slowdown. A background task collects and tabulates the error occurrences, and they can be read back using the STATIC display shown below.
Uncorrectable errors are detected, but most of these cannot be corrected, so your Mac will halt with a kernel panic, machine check detected by multiple processors. This is by design, to avoid poisoning your data.

So go about your usual work. From Time-to-Time, re-invoke or Refresh this display. The first modules to show up with errors are BAD, and any filled slots that show as "empty" had errors during the power-on self test, and are also BAD.

I  have a new Mac Pro computer and have migrated my files from my older computer to the new computer. In trying to open a Lightroom catalog on an external hard drive  I keep on getting the message "lightroom cannot use the catalog named " " because it is  not writable and cannot be opened. I have fixed all the "permissions" and yet it will still not open. How do I fix this?

    Hello Forum Members,
I figured it out. You have to select  the actual logo of the Lightroom catalog and then click on  "get info" and allow what ever your new user name to "read and write". That worked!

  • Mac Pro computer stop working

    Hi,
I have a new mac pro computer, version 10.6.8, Macintosh HD, Memory 4 GB 1333 Mhz DDR3, 2Ghz Intel Core i7.
One of my user account in particular stopped working. The apps does not respond when I click on them. The finder is not responding but throws out a message "The application Finder can't be open, -10810." that I cannot close afterwards. I cannot close the computer normally... when I do open a finder window by some command the right side menu is not the same .. it list the servers and then 'all', instead of the usual folders.
My other service account seem to be working normal but once the Finder error above appeared.
Please, what is wrong and what can I do to fix this?
    - Very concerned!

Yes. In the admin account, run this command:
    sudo -u fubar -H /System/Library/Frameworks/CoreServices.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/LaunchS ervices.framework/Versions/A/Support/lsregister -kill -r -domain user
Important: change the word "fubar" to the short name of the problem user. You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up.

  • New mac pro, CS5 crashes, where to start?

I have a new mac pro which crashes daily while using After Effects (and photoshop). I've seen some indication that this could be a driver issue with the 2 nvidia cards that came preinstalled, or an Adobe issue. Running 10.6.4 Snow Leopard. I can recreate this sometimes by scrubbing the after effects timeline with a spotlight casting a shadow on another layer. The system locks up, left monitor flashes black and I have to hard rest. This is super frustrating, apple has twice told me it's Adobe, but I don't know. All I do know as a business owner is that I'm $13,000 invested in hardware / software that don't seem to work together and I don't have many other options as this is what i do for living. Any thoughts at all? Anyone have any ideas?

2 24" cinema displays (one per card)

For sure it is really frustrating, especially when you convinced the company you work with to switch from FCP to CS5...
I have the same problem with a Mac Pro bought in April and a GTX 280... We were pretty happy with Premiere Pro, when editing a feature shot on RED 4K HD. It is the more stable release of that soft I ever seen, and I'm using it since Premiere 5.1 and the mini-DV.
But I'm disappointed by After Effect, which use to be alway stable in the previous version I used. We're working on a 3300$ computer, using a 450$ graphic card, and the two Samsung monitors keep flashing before AFX craches... That happen every 15 minutes.
The GeForce driven is updated. We have also a Geforce GT 120 in the Mac Pro, to plug a Wacom Cintiq 12WX on it... The screen of the wacom doesn't flash when it happens to the Samsungs, that's why I'm thinking of an issue involving the GTX 280. Anyway, nVidia does not provide any driver for Mac for the GT 120...
So it's probably more a graphic card issue, than a software one... But if someone has any other idea to get rid of this problem (unactivate open GL does not change the problem)... ?
Thanks in advance for who may help...

As being a novice with my Mac Pro computer and Cannon 5D mark 3 camera my issue has arisen while over the last year and half, when down loading into my Photoshop Lightroom 4, my 18,000  photograph were not catalogued correctly, or hardly at all, so now over several months time my photos have apparently been redirected in my libraries and have begun not appearing in their allotted frames next to their number in the library they are in. they also have a small question mark (?) next to the photo space. The frames are blank but indicates that there is a photo there. The majority of photos are blank but about a tenth are seen . i apparently need to retrace where they went but do not know how to get that done . can someone help please?

It would be difficult to tell you where to begin. If you moved photos around to different folders and didn't use Lightroom to move them, that would cause Lightroom to lose track of where they are. You have to remember that your images are not "in" Lightroom. Lightroom simply points to them wherever they are on your computer. All of the location information as well as the changes that you make to your images is stored in the catalog, which is a database. This catalog is central to the operation of Lightroom, and it's essential that you understand how it works and how to make it work for you. For all of those images that have "?" On them, or the folders that have the same, you will have to go through the process of locating them and showing Lightroom where they are located. With 18,000 images, and many of them missing, it might just be easier to start a new catalog and organize things properly from the beginning in that catalog.

  • HT203288 my computer crashed, then without me doing anything it must have went into some sort of recovery mode and cleaned everything i had off and went back to as if i had just got it new clearing everything including my whole itnes library ,but i thought

my computer crashed, then it started up having totally going back to as if it were just bought ,it deleted everything i had . Does itunes save my library because its all gone off my computer

It has always been very basic to always maintain a backup copy of your computer for this very occasion.
Use your backup copy of your computer to put everything back.
If for some reason you have failed to maintain a backup copy, not good, then you can redownload some itunes purchases in some countries:

  • Mac pro 2006 dont boot but fan's running like ****.

guys, my mac pro 2006 starts with the fan loud , seems running at total velocity. The video card  doesn't show nothing.  The usbs dont work.  when i extract the video card , the problem is the same.  I take the memory too, and the hd . The problem keeps going on.
The fan start's from zero to a million rpms.
The check leds on the motherboard are ok, no one of them are lighting.  If i take every part of the machine and i put  them outside,  the same thing happen.
    can you helpme?

Make sure your Ram is paired correctly when you install it --
And the long boot time is due to the previous reply. If you don't set a 'boot drive' the mac pro will look everywhere before selecting the OSX installation.
I've got the dual 300GB Velociprators in raid 0 with 80GB Intel ssd boot drive in my mac pro (same as yours). You can also boost your clock speed by a software trick .. I can get mine over 2.9 MHz before errors start popping up in console.
(problem is it screws up video playback and time)

  • Computer Crash Then error when installing Mac OS X Snow Leopard

My computer was running fine for about one week on OS Yosemite. But just yesterday when i rebooted my computer it would not boot into the OS at all. It would just turn on then go to the gray start up screen the the whole computer would turn off. I tired restoring from a time machine backup three times with no luck then i decided just to buy a new hard drive and start fresh. So I installed the old Mac OS X Snow Leopard and now when i reboot i get this error in the picture. can someone please help me out. This is a late 2009 Mac Pro and i was hopping to keep this computer for at least two more years before retirement.

I got it going. It seems that the boot disk needs to be in the first drive bay or it does not work. I think! But when i moved it it started working perfectly.
