Mac Pro - CPU and Ram Utilisation (don't appear to be fully used)

Hi,
We've recently purchase and set-up a Mac Pro running OS X 10.4.8 (latest patches), FCP 5.1.2 and don't seem to be getting quite the performance we were expecting. (Caveat - I'm a IT tech not a video specialist so apologies if I get something wrong).
A few background details
Our configuration is as follows:
Mac Pro Dual Proc/Dual Core 3.0GHz intel
5GB Ram configured as:
Riser A Dimm 1 - 1GB
Riser A Dimm 2 - 1GB
Riser B Dimm 1 - 1GB
Riser B Dimm 2 - 1GB
Riser A Dimm 3 - 512MB
Riser A Dimm 4 - 512MB
(think AFAIK this should be the best config for the ram we have?)
(Slot 1 (in x16 mode)) ATI Radeon X1900 512MB graphics
500GB Internal SATA HD
(Slot 3(in x4mode)) FC 2 GB/s Apple card to XRAID (7x500GB RAID 5 with one spare)
(Slot 4(in x4 mode))Blackmagic Decklink HD Pro
Xraid seems fine performance wise - Blackmagic disk test shows 145MB/s Read about 100MB/s write.
Anyhow we have been doing some test rendering but don't seem to get the CPU utilisation above 150% (out off 400%) and also note the RAM utilisation also seems a little on the low side (not using more than 200MB 'Real memory' (as noted in Activity monitor) and any more than 1.2GB 'virtual Memory' despite having lots available (nothing else running)).
The (DV PAL) file we are rendering is simple consisting of over an 1 hour of Sat TV footage (bout 15GB worth just to test) captured via DV to which we applied some plugin effects (Chroma key, Light Ray and Scrub) once again just to test perfomance.
Have checked all the settings I can think of -i.e. system settings > Memory and Cache is set to Application = 100% (2560MB) and Still Cache = 20% (482MB). Scratch is Xraid etc. but can't seem to find anything obvious that could bee affecting this. (Also as an aside does anyone know if FCP limited to 50% of total sys memory as it appears to be (looking at the app = 100% = 2580MB) as it seems we could utilise more (in generall)).
Is this situation be normal? - bit hard to benchmark as our other machines are still 10.3.9 / G5 based with FCP 4.x. The Video tech seems to think its not as big a difference from his Dual 2.0Ghz G5 2GB Ram (3 years old) as he thought it would be (apologies for his vagueness)
Anything I can look to change/improve - I am concerned mainly about the lack of utilisation? Everything is freshly built straight after delivery
thanks - Pete

It probably is mostly a 32-bit versus 64-bit thing in that the big boys like Final Cut Pro, Photoshop, After Effects, etc. won't "see" more than just under 4 gigs of RAM. So they won't use memory as efficiently. A nice side effect to this is that you can multitask well with several of these apps open at once if you have a around 8 gigs of RAM.
Also DV (NTSC or PAL) isn't going to tax the system much as far as bandwidth so your maximum RAM usage probably won't be as high.
Compressor will push the CPUs harder, as will using some other codecs that are more sophisticated than DV.
Also, I'd think that the new Intels are still new enough that a lot of software might not be fully optimized yet. And in general the G5 PPC machines have a really fat memory to processor bus so that you aren't necessarily going to see a radical speed increase with these new Intel motherboards for some tasks.
If you have any CPU-based 3D apps like Cinema 4D or similar I'd try rendering tests to benchmark your CPU usage. 3D isn't as RAM intensive but it will push the four cores in my Quad G5 nicely. I'd expect the new Intel Quads to outrun my PPC Quad.

  • CS4 Design Standard, Mac Pro Towers, and RAM recommendations

We're considering upgrading our design towers from:
    G5 Dual 1.8GHz
    2GB RAM
    10.3.9
    Adobe Creative Suite CS1
    Quark 6
    to:
    Mac Pro 2x 2.8GHz
    10.5.4
    Adobe CS4 Design Standard
    Quark 8 (I know, I know.)
We'll be spending most of our time in QuarkXpress, Photoshop CS4, and a bit of Illustrator CS4. We hope to eventually migrate to InDesign CS4, but for now our workflow won't allow it. We'll also be running Microsoft Office 2008 applications.
My question: how much RAM should we install? I don't want to buy more than I need, but want to get the optimal amount for the applications we'll be running. We work on 50-page or so Quark docs, with some time spent with 50MB or so Photoshop files. What's everyone's experience and recommendations?
    Thanks!

Start with 8 gigs and make sure you don't buy it from Apple. I recommend

Does anyone have any suggestions on the best graphics card for these larger displays for the best value?

I recommend you install nothing older than the Apple-firware 5770, about US$250.

    1) Apple brand cards:
    • Apple-firmware 5770, about US$250** works near full speed in every model Mac Pro, Drivers in 10.6.5
    • Apple-firmware 5870, about US$450
    2) "sold in the Apple store" cards

    • SAPPHIRE HD 7950 3GB GDDR5 MAC Edition, about US$480** Vendor recommends Mac Pro 4,1
    • EVGA GTX 680 Mac Edition, about US$600
The cards above require no more than the provided two 6-pin aux power connectors provided in the Mac Pro through 2012 model. Aux cables may not be provided for third-party cards, but are readily available.
If you are Meet ALL of these:
    • running 10.8.3 or later AND
    • don't care about "no boot screens" etc AND
    • can re-wire or otherwise "work out" the power cabling, THEN:
You can use many more cards, even most "PC-only cards"

Hi.  I recently changed my MacBook Pro password, and now I don't recall what it is.  My hope is that I can somehow gain access without deleting everything currently on it.  I do not have the MAC disk that it came with.  Is there something I can do myself?  Should I take it to the MAC store?  Thanks in advance for your help.

It helps with this kind of question to state which system version you are using on the computer as the answer will vary.

At this moment, that's correct. The OS X license included with a Mac can only be used with that Mac. However, in the case the OP has purchased OS X Mountain Lion in the past, this may change

When I work with a drive to boot many computers, I use the newest model computer I will be booting, and set the system up on that, run all the Apple updates. Normally I will have no issue booting any older computer with the same drive. Unless of course those older computers do not support the operating system on that drive.
If you want to test if the drive will boot the mac mini. Put your MacBook Pro into target mode. Connect the two computers together. And on the Mac Mini, go into system preferences and then under start up disk and see if the target disk mode computer's drive shows up there. Seelct that drive and restart. See if it boots ok. A bit easier then taking the drives out and moving things around.

  • Mac Pro 2013 and Premiere Pro - The performance issue that Adobe don't want us talking about!

In May 2014 I bought a 2013 Mac Pro to help my business with the ever increasing demands video editing was placing on our systems.  I was so excited to see how the 12GB of power the AMD D700s would affect my workflow and ability to edit footage seamlessly without delays to the creative process.
However, to my dismay pretty much since starting to work with the system I found that there was an issue with the GPUs, Mac OS and Adobe’s applications.  It was first reported by many other users in early 2014 and as yet know one from Adobe has really commented officially on the issue.
Sadly it appears to still be present today and speaking with an Adobe rep confirmed this.  Trouble is no one is doing anything about it.  My hope is that, if you have watched this video and are experiencing the same issues then please let’s get the comments going, share and like the video and let’s get Adobe, Apple and AMD to pick up this with immediate haste! Thank you.
Below is a video of the problem I have been experiencing.  It's a little long but I wanted to give a good account of the problem we are seeing so that someone can help! PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE help!
Mac Pro 2013 and Premiere Pro GPU Issue - YouTube
Thank you for your time and I'd love someone to help!

Thanks for responding!  It's such a pain and I have been chatting to one of Adobe's senior consultants about this and still none the wiser.  I have sent my machine off to the retailer as it was still under warranty.  Nothing wrong with GPU apparently which is a relief although I kinda wish it had been that as it would have been an easier fix.  Adobe told me that working with H.264 is totally possible but if you have a complex sequence with multicam and nested video with effects applied then it will seriously hinder performance.  Sadly transcoding to ProRes doesn't seem to help either and they suggested not adding any effects to the nested clips, flattening out the multi cams etc and this has improved things a bit.  Sent a sequence to SpeedGrade the other day though and the machine had a fit.  FCPX though seems to be working great and has a few advantages over Premiere so I may be making a switch for this type of work until Adobe can sort out this issue.  I still feel that the application isn't fully making the most of the GPUs.  In fact, I found out that multicam is actually all still on the CPU and that they are trying to implement GPU handling of multicam soon.

  • 2008 Mac Pro 3,1 RAM burning up - running hot

Problem: 2008 Mac Pro Tower running hot.
Possible causes: Power Supply? Fan not working? Machine has 667 mhz RAM not 800 mhz.
PSU was chirping like a cricket a few weeks ago. I pulled it out, air cleaned it (and the entire Mac, vacuumed all the dust) and left PSU out for 12 hours to static discharge, etc. When I put the PSU back in, it was working and the chirping was gone.
Successfully used the MAC for a few days, no probs other than 2 DIMMS went bad. I went away for 2 weeks, tried to start-up the Mac yesterday and it wouldn't power on at all, no light. I unplugged it, tried different outlets, power cords, etc. Then I removed any changes that I had made previously (i.e. installed diff HD and 2 new RAM DIMMs to replace the ones that burned up) before going away. I removed PSU and let it sit while I cleaned the 2 DIMMs that had seemed to overheat before I went away. Put it all back together (PSU, old DIMMs which were cleaned and left HD #3 out) and it powered up. I then noticed that I was down from 32 GB RAM to 16 GB very quickly. The machine had also "shut down because of a problem" during that time then restarted and ran for a bit. I repaired the 16 GB RAM by cleaning it, brought it back up to 32 GB again and within minutes it was back to 24 GB. I pulled the RAM cards out and they were hot. The last 8 GB to go were likely the only DIMMs I haven't cleaned yet. I don't know how long that fix will last. Seems like we have a pattern of over heating.
Any ideas? Is it the 667 mhz RAM? The PSU? The fan? (How do you test a fan?)
    Thank you for your time.

First the RAM must be made for your computer as determined by Apple:
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-6413
Thus you have an early 2008 Mac Pro if it is a Mac Pro tower and not a MacBook Pro notebook.
The RAM must be either preinstalled by Apple, or from a place that sells lifetime warranty early 2008 Mac Pro RAM.
Just because you got PC6400 DDR2 ECC 800 Mhz FB-DIMM with 256 bit wide memory architecture, as the specs call for,
does not mean the RAM is compatible.  Only RAM stated to be for "early 2008 Mac Pro" is compatible with those towers.
http://www.macsales.com/ (OWC) http://www.datamem.com/ and http://www.crucial.com/ all sell RAM by stating the time of year and model name.
Do not buy ValueRAM.   If after doing that it doesn't work, some directions for other interior repairs exist on http://www.ifixit.com/ and http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/
Check to make sure the circuit your machine is on is giving off the full amp called for by specs and that current is not split to other devices, and you have either a UPC or surge protector power cord that can handle that ampere. If there is any chance the machine was plugged in during a lightning storm, your power supply may be fried even with a surge protector or UPC being there.  No surge protector is 100% lightning foolproof.

  • Adobe After Effect CC 2014 on Mac Pro 2013 and Performance

    Hi everyone.
I'm planning to jump from my Mac Mini 2011 to some Mac Pro (cylinder) - 4 core or maybe 6 core and I'd like to know from someone who got experience with Ae and rendering/previewing or how smooth work it is on Mac Pro? I can't find any detailed video about performance Adobe Ae+Pr on Mac Pro. Of course I saw a thousand of benchmarks with scores but that doesn't say anything to me. I need to know if those grands are very well spent. I'm quiet afraid of those RAM previewing. Also I saw nice video with man who showed fast rendering on Premiere on Mac Pro. Actually I haven't got any problem even on Mac Mini with premiere - everything was smooth, without lack, delays or something but when I sent some tracks to Ae for stabilising or changes and see the results back in Premiere was a nightmare.
I would like to know what is you opinion and experiences. Thank you very much.
PS: If the Ae will be like that as it is today I have no choice to start with the Final Cut Pro X + Motion

AE is almost all CPU and ram. Your ram preview time will be decided by those specs. The nMPro is not the current best solution for that since that is the previous Ivy-E Platform with DDR3. The X99 Is the current platform ie Haswell E which has DDR4 and the 8 Core CPU's. That would be the better way to go if AE and ram preview is your focus. How ever if you have to go mac then I would not suggest less than the 6 Core and 32GB of ram. The Dual GPU's have no impact on AE since the only acceleration is Ray Tracer and that is Nvidia only.

Hello and welcome to Apple Support Communities!
Yes, you can install Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit in your Mac using Parallels for Mac. Just follow the instructions of the virtualization programs during the install. Should you need any assistance with the installation process, I strongly recommend contacting Parallels Tech Support (you must register with Parallels in order to have tech support).
Alternatively, you can always use Apple's BootCamp if you want to run Windows natively in your Mac. Check their support page, Apple has a lot of good links explaining this solution.
    Hope this helps!

As being a novice with my Mac Pro computer and Cannon 5D mark 3 camera my issue has arisen while over the last year and half, when down loading into my Photoshop Lightroom 4, my 18,000  photograph were not catalogued correctly, or hardly at all, so now over several months time my photos have apparently been redirected in my libraries and have begun not appearing in their allotted frames next to their number in the library they are in. they also have a small question mark (?) next to the photo space. The frames are blank but indicates that there is a photo there. The majority of photos are blank but about a tenth are seen . i apparently need to retrace where they went but do not know how to get that done . can someone help please?

It would be difficult to tell you where to begin. If you moved photos around to different folders and didn't use Lightroom to move them, that would cause Lightroom to lose track of where they are. You have to remember that your images are not "in" Lightroom. Lightroom simply points to them wherever they are on your computer. All of the location information as well as the changes that you make to your images is stored in the catalog, which is a database. This catalog is central to the operation of Lightroom, and it's essential that you understand how it works and how to make it work for you. For all of those images that have "?" On them, or the folders that have the same, you will have to go through the process of locating them and showing Lightroom where they are located. With 18,000 images, and many of them missing, it might just be easier to start a new catalog and organize things properly from the beginning in that catalog.

  • Early 2009 Mac Pro, Mavericks, and Airplay

Yes, I'm sure this question has been asked and answered a thousands times, but I have been looking in vain for an answer that helps me.
I have an early 2009 Mac Pro, running Mavericks.  I have a Denon AVR-1912 Receiver, which my iPhone and iPad see and can play through with no trouble.  So can my MacBook Pro.  I also have Apple TV, but I don't use it for streaming music because the Denon works well.
What I want to do is sit at my Mac Pro desktop and play songs through iTunes that play not only through my desktop system but through my home theater system (the Denon Receiver).  I'm used to clicking on the little Airplay icon and getting to choose Single or Multiple speakers.  When I go to System Prefs/Sound, I see my sound card (Presonus Firestudio) AND I see Apple TV and my Denon.  So my computer is seeing them both.
Here's what happens.  If I choose the Firestudio in System Prefs, it plays as always through my desktop system, but there is no Airplay icon in iTunes. If I choose Denon in System Prefs, iTunes plays music through the Denon AND I get the Airplay icon in iTunes.  If i click on the icon and I choose Multiple, I can choose Airplay Device, which is already checked, and Computer.   If I click on Computer, the Airplay icon disappears in iTunes, and the music starts playing through my computer's internal speakers, not through my Firestudio sound card, and it stops playing through the Denon.
Why does the Airplay icon not give me an option to play through my sound card and the Denon?  Why, in other words, can't I do what I said I wanted to do in the third paragraph, above?  Is it possible or is my Mac Pro too old?
    Many thanks,
    Paul

I found out that the built in firewall interferes with AirPlay (which I know is weird).
Try turning the OS X firewall off using System Settings -> Security. If AirPlay now works, turn on the firewall and add "coreaudio" to the list of exceptions. This worked for me.
Coreaudio is the system driver for audio, by the way.
