  • Are Systems 10.5.8 and 6.03 compatible if on separate drives on a Mac Pro?

Question:  I am running System 10.5.8 on  a 2008 Mac Pro in order to preserve my ability to use certain legacy applications such as Quicken 2003 and not lose years of financial data.  There is no reliable financial application currently available to imput Quicken 2003 QIF files to but I need to upgrade my System 10.5.8 to Systen 10.6.3 in order to run TurboTax 2012 from a DVD.  Because the 2008 Mac Pro has 4 bays my thought was to add another drive and install System 10.6.3 plus 10.6 updates to 10.6.8 on the added drive.  This action would preserve the ability to run legacy software for awhile on System 10.5.8 and permit the switching between the two drives and systems for flexibility.  My concern is if this action is undertaken possible firmware changes in System 10.6 would destroy the ability to use System 10.5.8 on my current drive and destroy my ability to access my years of financial records on my drive that are contained in Quicken 2003 and past TurboTax  years.
The major issue is whether Systems 10.5.8 and 10.6.3(plus updates) can co-exist on a 2008 Mac Pro if installed on separate drives?

    To Hatter:
Thank you for the comments, they were helpful.  I agree that using a separate drive for System 10.6.8 would be wasteful of capacity but am very concerned that if hidden firmware changes in System 10.6.8 affected the ability to preserve the usage of System 10.5.8 on my current drives in bays 1 and 2 there would be no way back.  I accept the the wastage by believing it may be more conservative and safer than partioning my drives 1 and 2.  I back up my drives 1 and 2 to external firewire OWC drives using Super Duper but restoring from the backup drives might not be possible if hidden firmware changes in System 10.6.8 modified the Mac Pro.  Again, there would be no way back I fear!
Keeping System 10.5.8 alive keeps my historical financial records alive until some software house develops an application that functions reliably and can import and preserve historical Quicken Quicken  2003 QIF files.  It also preserve the ability to reach back for tax records given that TurboTax now has a minimum system requirement of System 10.6.0 starting with 2012.
Also, I understand your point about having the system and software on separate drives but I have a need to maintain data files on separate drives due to Quicken 2003 software deficiencies—it won't handle two sets of books on one drive without chaos.  Separating System 10.5.8 and the two data collections would require three drives and impact the backup process that I diligently follow.
But your thoughtful comments have helped me with my deliberations.

  • Mac Pro Thunderbolt, USB3, etc. hardware upgrades...

Feeling a bit left out in 2 years since I bought my Mac Pro with no real hardware upgrades for my Mac Pro.
Can anyone comment on what they've done to keep their Mac Pro updated with the latest?
    - Thunderbolt.  I was surprised this wasn't in the updated 2012 Mac Pro.  Has anyone heard of any third party thunderbolt cards?  I've gone ahead and purchased a Thunderbolt hard drive for my Mac Book Air that also has a FireWire 800 port.  I'm planning on using Apple's Thunderbolt to FireWire adapter (intended for MBA and MBP laptops) in reverse and use the adapter on the Thunderbolt hard drive to connect it to my Mac Pro tower's FireWire 800 port.  At least this way when Thunderbolt does arrive for us I can just stop using the adapter.  Apple genius said this should work, but I guess the proof will be when I go to copy lots of data (something Macs already struggle with) http://store.apple.com/us/product/MD464ZM/A
    - USB 3.0.  Has anyone found a good reliable USB 3.0 card for the Mac Pro?  Again I was surprised Apple left this out of the 2012 refresh.  I like the faster speeds over FireWire 800 and if folks have found a good working USB 3.0 card that works I'll gladly put one in my tower.  I looked at the La Cie USB 3 PCI add on card, but haven't heard anything about native support for it from Apple.  http://www.lacie.com/products/product.htm?id=10493
    - Display card.  Anyone have recommendations on a better display card than the default one Apple shipped?  Apple's original ATi Radeon HD 5770 works like crap with HDMI (mini display port or DVI), especially to my new Samsung 27" HDMI monitor.  I'd love to get a new Apple Thunderbolt Display and refuse to buy the antiquated Apple Cinema Display.  Seeing Apple's new Mac Mini with both HDMI and Thunderbolt gives me hope, but the Intel HD Graphics 4000 chipset seems pathetic.  I did like that Apple gave the new iMac a NVIDIA Kepler GPU so maybe there is hope for the Mac Pro yet.
    - Anyone find anything useful to put in the extra optical drive slot?  The dream of a BlueRay recorder with Lightscribe support and Mac drivers seems long dead.  I'd love to see some innovation like a removable SSD drive bay or something better than the coffee cup holder it has become.
Ramblings on what has and hasn't been working for me...
If there are Mac Pro users who like to work in the dark I would highly recommend the Moshi Luna backlighted keyboard.  It works great and allows me to video edit without having to strain my eyes with uncessary room lights in order to see the keyboard.  It sure beats the USB powered LED I was using to shine a light on Apple's extended keyboard!  I still have to switch from Apple's Magic Trackpad to Magic Mouse when I bootcamp to Windows 7 (the trackpad drivers are not robust enough under Windows unless someone has found a solution).
I also ran into a horrific issue with Paragon's HFS+ Win 7 drivers hosing my Mac drives when I tried to use Sony's PMB software to copy HD movies to my Mac drives (NEVER AGAIN).
Any thoughts you have I'd love to hear!

Asus makes a card but it only works with certain motherboards made by them. Doesn't exactly have to be installed 'at the factory' but could be interpreted as such.
Until I start seeing PCIe graphics cards that support Thunderbolt either directly with a Thunderbolt connector on the card or an internal Display Port to Thunderbolt connector I'm not sure I would want a display that connects only with Thunderbolt.
HDMI and Display Port is well tested technology. Many displays are available.
Limited (i.e. none to my knowledge) options at this time for discreet graphics cards that support Thunderbolt. So either you use either the Intel integrated graphics chipset (low performance) for video or a non-Thunderbolt display with a discreet graphics card.
If you daisy chain devices you have to share the bandwidth much like you do with Firewire.
Thunderbolt is great for laptops a small footprint computers because it extends the PCIe architecture outside of the computer giving you the option of using higher data capacities associated with PCIe. But since Mac Pros already have four PCIe slots why would you want to use up 4 PCIe lanes for a dedicated interface that is still in it's infancy?

  • I need to buy some new hard drives for my Mac Pro

I had an extra internal hard drive in my Mac Pro, a Seagate one, that suddenly stopped working and I needed to send it to a data recovery company, so...
    Now I'd like to
    - Install a new internal HD
    - Install a NAS with two/three disks. (Hitachi if possible, as I have read are the ones that last longer, more reliable than WD and by far more than Seagate).
But to do that I'd like to know how to find out the right type of disks for my computer.
I'd be very gratefull if anyone would tell me where to look it up.
    Thank you in advance
In case any of you can help with this, these are the details of my Mac Pro
    thanks again

NAS is of course external and depends on how you access it. And then t he ideal for RAID5 for instance woudl be WD RED series, but those do not work inside Mac tower.
Look up "TLER"  regarding WD drives and RAID.
Apple does not endorse or anything, not in decades and when there were problems - G5 and early adoption of SATA and changing standards and features, it was users that did the troubleshooting.
So unles you are using Apple's PRO RAID card, which I don't think anyone would or should and which is limited to 2TB drives and only instance of a ceiling on supported drives (it is req'd for SAS though), use your own research.

  • Brand new Mac Pro - Suddenly iOS devices won't charge

So I've been using my brand new Mac Pro 8-core for about a week now and I've already had 1 force reboot (kernel panic, error 14 page fault) and earlier tonight, when I plugged in my iPhone 4S, its screen didn't turn on as usual after being plugged in... The "charging" icon didn't appear in the phone's menu bar, and neither Xcode nor iTunes recognize the phone as being plugged in. I'm running Snow Leopard with all the latest software updates.
    I've tried:
plugging it into other USB ports
    using a different USB cable
unplugging and plugging in quickly, repeatedly
charging my iPod touch and my wife's old iPhone 3G - they won't charge either
My "old" Mac Pro that this Mac Pro is replacing had a very similar issue... after leaving the computer on for a while and returning, usb devices wouldn't charge, apps would hang, and i'd have to cold reboot. This got progressively worse over time, and eventually "died" when the system crashed w/ a never-ending beachball and wouldn't boot back up. I'm starting to wonder if I should just return it and get an iMac or something since I have a hunch this is hardware related.
Something also weird is that before I plugged my iPhone in, I was using Xcode and had my phone selected as a build target... even though it wasn't plugged it in. (Normally if it's not plugged in, the name will not appear in the list.) Nothing happened when I tried running my app obviously so I stopped the build, then plugged my phone in. That's when I noticed it wouldn't charge.
THEN it gets even worse... while I was typing this, when trying different USB ports, in the process I unplugged my keyboard. After plugging my keyboard back in, it wouldn't work. Cold reboot.
I'm really hesitant to lug this brand new Mac Pro back to the Apple store just to hear them say "The diagnostic test looks ok to me!" and have the issue crop up again a couple weeks later.
Does anyone have any ideas on what could be causing this, or have you seen anything similar with your Mac Pro? Again, I just picked this Mac Pro up last weekend at an Apple store.
    Thanks!

  • MAC PRO USB Problem - Traced to bad Apple Keyboard Extension Cable

I found a fix to a problem synching to my itunes Library on my early 2008 MAC PRO.   The Apple supplied USB extension cable for the keyboard was defective.
The symptoms were hangs in itunes and finder synching to iPods and transferring data to USB hard drives. The iPods and hard drives never lost power and no errors/log entries were made. The transfers simply stalled and would not continue. itunes and finder would hang until the drive or ipod was removed. These devices were installed directly to USB ports on the MAC PRO. No other USB devices were connected except for the aluminum keyboard and mighty mouse; the mouse was connected to the keyboard. The keyboard was connected using the USB extension cable that shipped with the MAC PRO.
Hardware diagnostics were all clear. The keyboard and mouse never had any connection problems. Only itunes syncs and hard drive copies would fail; these would occur at random times. I had an open ticket with Apple to have the logic board replaced as it was diagnosed to be a hardware/USB problem.
Removal or replacement of the extension cable on the keyboard (which was connected to a different USB port and NOT in the USB chain with the ipod and hard drives) permanently fixed the problem. I cancelled the Apple HW replacement.
I have noted several posts with others having problems with USB ports and devices. I wonder if Apple has an unknown problem with bad keyboard extension cables.

I think you may be onto something there. I'm just a few weeks into my second Mac Pro and again it's having the same USB problems which led Apple to give me a replacement machine previously. I went through several weeks of considerable testing with Apple Engineers prior to that - an Apple Care application to collect data from my machine, Apple Developer USB prober and two clean installs. The latest machine initially showed no sign of the problem then it started again - 2 iPods "can not be read or written to" part way through sync, Aperture quitting importing from USB SD card reader, USB drives dismounting etc. So I pulled out the Aluminium keyboard and, lo and behold, the iPods managed to get all the way through synching without errors. I really like the alu keyboard so it's a huge shame that it might be the cause of all my problems so far - and the Mac Pro is otherwise a beautiful computer.
But is this really a hardware problem of the internal USB cards and power management or supply?

  • Imac vs mac pro for FCP?

    Hello folks,
Well, my G5 apparently needs a new logic board. I could cry, or be happy at the excuse to get a new computer... I chose the latter!
Bottom line, what is the consensus regarding imac vs mac pro.
I will be using FCP a lot, that's what I do for a living. However, I rarely run other applications at the same time. Occassionally LiveType or Photoshop, but that's about it. No Motion, no After Effects, etc.
I feel that an imac will suffice nicely and that the mac pro is overkill in both cost and amount of computer. It's like getting an Indy car and driving 40 MPH!
    Thoughts? Thank you.
    Eric P

hmmm, interesting. Of course the mac pro would be better, no doubt. But for my purposes I still wonder if it's worth the cost.
As for Kevan D's inquirey for more info, yes I work with FCP for a living, at least 50% of my work week maybe more is editing. However, silly little ol' weddings have become the vast majority of my work and they will continue to be for at least a few more years I believe. In that time I do not see HD being a factor in my area. So for the forseeable future I expect to be working soley with SD. That bit of info may change some of your minds to thinking that an imac will suffice.
I admit, that's my hope because I would have to take out a loan for the mac pro, and again, I'm just not certain it's worth it for my purposes. On the other hand, I didn't ask the question so that I could hear what I "wanted", I do want honest opinions from other professionals like yourselves. If the experience is that an imac just isn't worth it then so be it.
As far as expandability (is that anything like drinkability??), I understand that, but again for my purposes I suspect that by the time I need to expand to HD or to using the full benefits of a mac pro, a new computer (and equipment) will be in the order anyway. Does that make sense?
    Thanks again,
    Eric

  • Motion 3.0.2 Keep crashing on Macbook Pro and Mac Pro without any reasons.

We have a Mac Pro with FCS 2 and I have a Macbook Pro with FCS 2 installed too.
Motion 3.0.2 keep crashing on both machine, and the frequency of crashing in the Macbook Pro is much higher and unpredictable.
I have done a clean installation of OSX Leopard and FCS 2 on both machine and all the software on both machine have been updated to the latest version.
I have Macbook Pro with 4GB of RAM and both machine are working in PAL SD format.
I have not done anything complicate on both machine. I just try to do some vortex behavior, some simple particle test with rate set to 10-20.
Oh! Both of them crashes too even when I using the templates come with the system, and the MBP crashes much more than the Mac Pro, but again both crashes to a frequency unacceptable to be used as a production machine.
Any hints and help will be very appreciated.

  • Graphics Firmware Update 1.0 for Mac Pro 2006?

The official documentation is confusing because Apple lists the 2006 Mac Pro as "incompatible" with Windows 7 here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3986 but at the bottom of the same page it states that the update is for the "Mac Pro with NVIDIA Geforce 7300 GT" which is the original card that the 2006 Mac Pro came with. The page makes no reference to the specific model other than that.
Also, the compatibility page for the update here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3967 lists graphics "Device ID 0x0393, or 0x009D" as the applicable units, one of which, ID 0x0393, matches the 7300 GT in my 2006 Mac Pro.
Again, no reference to specific Mac Pro generation is made on any page, including the driver download page
    here: http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/apple/firmware_hardware/graphicsfirmwareup date10imacandmacprocompatibilitywithwindows7.html
    only the points I outlined.
Is this an error on the part of Apple or is it for the 2006 Mac Pro?

Marketing seems to write the technical hardware articles lately!
Even though not supported officially, and while Windows 7 Pro 32-bit will only allow 2GB RAM, it does boot and install. 64-bit you have to jump through extra hoops is all.
UEFI made it easier to have a BIOS and/or EFI subset, but UEFI came out 1/2006 and Apple probably settled on EFI32. It wasn't until 2008 that UEFI 2.1 showed in Mac Pro and which marks the "official support" point in time and hardware reference.
I was surprised - dumbfounded - to see the 7300GT firmware update too. And I had to remove mine when installing Windows Vista x64 in the past, and for the RC last year.

  • Mac Pro won't boot up

When I hit the power button, it powers up, makes the start-up chime, the power button glows blue and then that's it. It doesn't do anything and I don't hear the hard drive being accessed. Monitor is black. It was working a minute ago but I had to shut down for a minute and then restart and now it seems dead. I tried pulling out my additional drives, unplugged all external items, even tried sticking one of the secondary drives into the first drive bay just to see if I would at least get a flashing disk icon... but still nothing. If i hit the power button it instantly shuts down. If i unplug the power cord, the mac automatically tries to start up when the cord is plugged back in, either to the wall socket or the mac itself. Tried removing all aftermarket ram and also tried replacing the original two ram chips with the aftermarket ram. I tried hitting the little smc reset button on the motherboard too. I also tried replacing the pram 3v 2032 battery. Any ideas????

    Hi there!
It seems you did all the troubleshooting properly. I would go back and re-trace exactly what you did before the computer started acting like this. Maybe you can then think about what was done and possibly undo what happened. What Mac Pro is it? You mention you pushed the SMC_RST button, so I am assuming you have a 2006 Mac Pro.
Again, it looks like you did 95 percent of the troubleshooting, but the best way to figure out exactly how this happened is to go back and remember what you did or what the computer was doing before this took place.

  • Mac pro shipping delay

I've ordered a hex core 3.33 mac pro with radeon 5870 on October 20th and just got an e-mail saying that my order has been delayed - shipping in 3-5 business days. In worst case scenario (if it doesn't get delayed again) I'll be receiving my mac pro in 21 days since ordering! Has anyone recently ordered a mac pro and experienced such long shipping delays? Looking at the Apple Store and the 5870 status "Leaves Apple: Currently Unavailable" is the video card causing the delays? Or perhaps it's 10.6.5 or iLife 11?
I'm a bit disappointed - wait patiently or call Apple and ask what's going on? Any ideas...
    thx,
    adrian

This is something to take up with Apple Customer Service.
The ATI 5870 has so far NEVER been available as a separate upgrade option, and now the 5770s are not shipping, so perhaps there is a supply chain availability.

i bought some ringtones on my iPhone, later on i sync my iphone to my old computer now i have a new mac pro desktop and i only have 2 ringtones on my phone but not the rest of them how can i get them back without having to pay for them again?

If you bought them on your iPad then you will need to connect your iPad to your computer's iTunes and do File > Devices > Transfer Purchases to copy them over to the Tones part of your computer's iTunes library and you can then sync them to your iPhone - ringtones are a one-time only download, so you won't be able to redownload them directly on your phone.

If you upgrade to Lion it comes bundeled with it!
To get it on your Mac Pro just copy the aplication from the aplication folder on your MacBook.  You can do this via a thumb drive or over a local network connection.

  • I paid for lion because my 2006 mac pro will not run anything newer (arbitrary decision by apple). Downloaded it, but nothing happened. App Store now says i've already downloaded it, so I can't try again. App store also says lion isn't available in usa.

I found out that an 06 mac pro cannot be updated to anything more recent than lion. They guys at the local shop told me this after they tried to update it for me so I could run logic pro 9 in 64 bit mode. I bought lion. Waited two days for the emails. Spent hours following the instructions which sounded so simple until you try them. Finally I found the "redeem" button that was hidden because the size of my safari window was too small to show it and there was no bar at the bottom to scroll over. Without googling "how do you find the app store" and "how do you find quick links" I never would have figured it out. I only mention this so that others may learn from my mistakes. Finally I downloaded lion, supposedly, but nothing happened. There is no indication that anything downloaded, other than the fact that when I try to download it again, it says it's already been downloaded. I spent four hundred bucks at the shop updating, plus whatever they charged me for lion, and I've still got snow leopard and logic pro running at 32 bits. I'm pretty sure nobody can help me, but could you please arrange for the return of my time?

You can go to "Purchases" tab and check again.
If OS X Lion is still not downloading, try at a different network environment.
By the way, Mac Pro (2006) with a newer graphics card runs Mavericks perfectly with modifications in the installer.
It's not allowed to be discussed here, but you can simply google how to do it.
