Mac Pro Display Issue

Mac Pro Display Issue - Unexpectedly Sleeps and Freezes
Just since a couple of days my Mac Pro desktop has been having display issues. Unexpectedly the screens go into sleep mode, it turns black and freezes, the computer doesnot respond to the keyboard or mouse.
At first I thought this was related to Chrome, and switched to Firefox, but the computer is still having the same issue. I have to shut down and restart each time it gets stuck.
I even went into preferences and changed the energy saver settings to "Never" allow display or harddrive to sleep. But this problem is stil happening.
Does anyone have the same problems? Or a solution?

I cleaned out my mac with compressed air, it was dusty, but the display flickering happened again.
So I followed your advice and installed:
Temperature Monitor
http://www.bresink.de/osx/TemperatureMonitor.html
Which showed that my memory module 1B and 2B were 70 - 75'C(160 -167'F). There was no reading for the graphic card so I couldn't tell if that was over heating.
Then I installed:
smc fan controller
http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/23049/smcfancontrol
and increased the memory_cpu fan speed which lowered the temperature of the ram to 60'C (143'F).
I even changed this ram's placement and put it in different slots. This ram was the same temperature in the new placements.
Also this is the kingston 2gb ram without heatsinks. Ive used it for 1.5 yrs, and this is the first time its giving me these problems.
Do you know how I can check if the graphic card is over heating? or is the problem just with the ram?
Thank you for all your help!

  • Mac Pro Display Issue HELP!

    Hello Everyone,
Lately i just bought a new mac pro. recently i have been doing some video projects in final cut pro 7 (i know its outdated lol) in the video preview it seems that the video has some distortion to it, meaning the the video has a skewed effect to it of some sort. I upgraded from a 2009 iMac which i have never noticed this issue before! I don't think that it would be a hardware issue.. heres my specs:
    3.33GHz 6-core
    12 gigs of ram
    ATI radeon 5770 1gb ram
    Monitor: Samsung SyncMaster SA300
I think that it may be the monitor.. as i soon plan on upgrading to a cinema display.
If anyone has and idea what may be causing this unusual issue that would be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks in advance!

  • Mac Pro Display Issues

I am trying to use three monitors with a Mac Pro with a default Radeon 5770 graphics card, but I am coming across many issues. First, I had to find out that you needed two dual-link DVI adapters if you want to add three monitors. After purchasing one adapter from StarTech for a 30" Dell monitor however, the display is having many issues.
When I first turn the computer on, the display shows "snow". I have to turn the display on and off, but sometimes even this does not get rid of it. Also, the screen will not wake up when the computer wakes up from sleep, although the other DVI monitor attached works perfectly. Finally, the screen will often go into periods of complete black. I can still move the mouse on the other screen, but it jumps around and skips when I move it.
If I want to resolve this issue, should I:
    1) Go with Apple's dual-link adapter instead of the StarTech one I am currently using
    2) Upgrade the Mac Pro graphics to either the dual 5770 or the single 5870
    3) Replace the large dell monitor with an Apple Cinema Display
Or, would none of these solutions even help if this is an unsolvable problem.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks!

That is not quite right. Strictly speaking, it is not three dual-Link adapters that are required, but all adapters must be ACTIVE, POWERED Adapters.
Apple's solution requires their Daul-Link adapters because those are the ones with a USB lead to pick up even more power.
Your initail query tlaks of wanting to connect three monitors, but you have only provided connection details for two.

  • New Mac Pro display issues with Thunderbolt display

When connected to a 27inch Thunderbolt display after a while I get vertical blue lines on the display. If I plug my Macbook Air into the screen, after a while the blue lines clear. How do I find out if it's the Mac Pro or the Display?

Thanks Turbostar, that's exactly right, it takes about 30 minutes having the Air plugged in and the stripes disappear.

You can use the two graphics cards, but it's only useful if you have more than two displays. It won't give you higher speed.

  • Why no controls on My Mac Pro display for the 9/12 event?

Why no controls on My Mac Pro display for the 9/12 event?  I thought it odd that I had no conrols for the event (later in the day) - Just something Apple was trying different. - It was frustrating that I could not pause it , and later, jump to the point where it crashed. (anybody else have that problem?)  But later I had my wife look at it on her 24" iMac, and the controls were present and it worked fine.  I thought it might be because I had turn off Java; I turned it on and tried it, still no fade in on mouse move controls.  Anybody have an idea why?  (Apple STILL needs to update the product list on this submit page This is ML 10.8)

After 3 more days, and a reboot, still no controls on THIS video. Everything else seems fine.  Even the Apple movie trailers with the same type of "floating" controls work properly.  Does anybody have a clue?

  • 27" iMac as Mac Pro Display?

I currently use the 24" LED as a display for my Mac Pro, but give the increased pixels on the 27" iMac and it's MiniDisplay Port in capability, and given it's cheaper than the 30" cinema display, with a much better panel, on only slightly lower vertical display resolution, I've been giving serious thought to switching to the baseline 27" iMac as a display.
A couple things are holding me back. I'm guessing with MiniDP in, you only get the video, no audio like on the 24" LED (which uses USB). Since there's no USB, I'm also guessing there's no iSight pass-through. I could always add speakers and and a mic/cam combo, but that seems less elegant.
Has anyone tried the 27" iMac as a Mac Pro display? If so, please let me know how well it fits.

    Hello Pete.
Search your SnowLeopard Mac Finder > Help for "target display mode" (without the quotation marks) to find the instructions for this new feature.
    Among those instructions are:
The external display computer works like any other external display. To change display settings, open System Preferences on the primary computer and click Display.
I looked for the web-based page, but I could not find it, so, at least for now, you will need to view it in your Mac's Help viewer.

  • Mac Pro display remains black after start up.

My 2008 Mac Pro display remains black after start up.  It is plugged in properly and the light comes on, but the screen stays black.  It first started doing this about a week ago, but after a manual restart or two, it would start up properly with the display working.  Today the display has remained black every time I've tried to start up.  Any suggestions for troubleshooting would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Safe Mode uses a very simple way of talking to the screen -- it does not even load the screen driver, and it uses a very common low resolution.
If it does not work that way, it simply does not work. You need a replacement graphics card.

  • Mac Pro screen issue

    Hi all,
my mac pro shows the apple logo at start up and the users available.
Then, either the screen goes crazy with lots of moving thin grey lines or I get to
login in under my account and then the finder has lots of artifacting on the screen
    - black blocks in the finder window or parts of top bar displays overlapping text. I've
had some odd black triangle across some of the finder windows too.
If I log in to the guest user (safari only mode) the screen is fine.
Is this a graphics card issue or something else?
p.s. I have tried installing 10.8 but alas, my mac is just one model out from being suported.

  • Early 08 Mac Pro display black on start up!

    Hi
I have an early 2008 Mac Pro with what looks like a faulty ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT.
There has been a longstanding issue with my 30" Cinema Display going blank (black) during a restart. It happens about halfway through startup when the spinning wheel is on screen. The white LED on the display lights solidly. The Mac appears to boot up normally and I can shut it down blindly using key commands.
Occasionally, unplugging the display and then re-plugging it brings it back to life but animation such as Dock magnification then becomes very jerky.
I've zapped the PRAM, reset the SMC numerous times. Both have occasionally bought the screen back to life but the problem has always re-occured. I've removed the graphics card, cleaned the connectors and then replaced it.
The issue has remained through a complete reformat and installation of Leopard and then Snow Leopard plus numerous OS updates.
The Mac almost always starts up normally first thing in the morning. The problem seems to get worse throughout the day, i.e. the longer the Mac has been on, the more likely the graphics are to fail on restart suggesting an overheating issue perhaps?
I would send the Mac in for repair BUT... it is stuff full of 3x Pro Tools PCIe cards and I REALLY don't want take them out OR send it in with the cards in place. (Please note: the problem was occurring long before the Pro Tools cards were installed.
So... my question is, does this sound like a faulty ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT? If so, I'll try and get a replacement. (Any idea where in the UK? I've searched everywhere!)

Your Mac uses a default setting to fire up the display and set a start-up picture. Halfway through the boot-up process, it switches to the stored System Preferences. This file may be damaged. A re-install (keep my preferences) would not fix it.
I suggest you boot up in safe mode (hold down the shift key all the way through startup) and use System Preferences > Displays
... to change something about your display, so that it will re-write the Preferences files.

  • Mac Pro display does not recover from sleep

    Hello,
I have a Mac Pro Mid 2010 with two graphics cards (ATI 5770 & nVidia Geoforce GT 120) and three displays.  After intense use of the GPUs with graphics processing jobs, and after the screen goers to sleep, they do not recover.  The computer is accessible via the network (ping, ssh, etc) however, the screens blank out and no longer recover from sleep.  The only resolution is to reboot.
I have already run memtest all just to make sure there isn't a memory issue.  All tests passed.  Also, this issue has ocurred with Mountain Lion and Mavericks.
Does anyone have any suggestions or experiences with regard to this iussue?
    Thanks

Update -- I now can reproduce the issue at will and it is definitely related to the sleep feature and has gotten much worse under OS X Mavericks.  Side Rant -- First let me note how disappointing Mavericks is as a platform.  Apple's output seems to be getting progressively less thought out, reliable and buggy.
Now back to the issue.  I created a hot corner that puts my display to sleep.  Every time I active the hot corner the system display is lost -- that is the system continues to function and respond via network (ping, ssh, etc) but no joy on un-sleeping the displays.
    I have Mac Pro Mid 2010 w/ 2x 2.4Ghz Quad Core, 32GB RAM, ATI 5770 and NVidia Geoforce GT 120 using three displays (2x 27" Apple and 1x Panasonic 1080P HD TV) running OS X 10.9.1 (13B42).

  • Three Mac Pro Displays

Hi everyone, I have a "mid 2010" mac pro with a 5770 graphics card. I have two 22" (1920x1200) cinema displays connected now and I am trying to add a third dell 1920x1200 monitor. My problem occurs when connecting the third display - only 2 seem to work at once. What do I need to do to get 3 displays working? Thanks in advance.

  • Mac Pro display flickers with a white screen and then display closes

    Hi,
The display on my Mac Pro started showing a white screen and flickering.
So I tried formating and re-installing 10.4.10. I am able to complete the installation of first DVD without flickering. But when after the restart after installation using first DVD then the flickering resumes.
Any idea what is the issue and how we can solve this issue.
The AHT test shows this code 4 SNS/1/40000001:ICAC. According to
http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2081?viewlocale=en_US the code should have a trailing number - but my report does not have any number. Is this error code fine? If no, can some one tell me what is the error in the system?
    Thanks,

Same symptoms here. We tried AHT on a good Mac Pro with the video card from the bad mac, and got the 4 SNS/1/40000001:ICAC error. Looks like a bad video card.

  • Mac Pro display 1080P on HDTV

Hey there, I just got a new Bravia 46" HDTV that can display 1080P, I connect it to my Mac Pro via DVI to HDMI, and The highest resolution is 1080i (interlaced), and the picture is really clean while static. But it looks cruddy when windows, objects, or video moves around. I then plugged in the HDTV via VGA at 1080 (Doesn't specify if it's interlaced or not), and the picture was incredibly smoother. My question is can you get native 1080P From DVI to HDMI on a mac pro?
    Thanks

doesnt seem like it. are you using the Ati X1900xt video card? even the nVidia 7300 card doesnt seem to support that natively..especially on high-def monitors, excluding the Apple Cinema Displays (23" and 30"), i got odd scan lines using HDMI>DVI cabling but with VGA its sharp, clear and (better) and im not using a hdtv, its 1080p 28" monitor. but im to assume its similar to a hdtv.
HOWEVER though, when i hooked up the screen to my macbook pro using the hdmi-dvi cable and plugged it into the dvi port, no scan lines at all (theyre not very visible except on dark grey backgrounds - think in preview when you maximize the window and that dark grey background)
perhaps its a ati card issue (though in Windows i dont experience any of that, so i have no idea honestly)
iam going to assum at this point its a OSX thing, and its a profiling issue within OSX?
but depending on the system configuration it seems that mainly the labtops and mini's have had better luck with High-def 1080p monitors.
id like to know more if you find out more helpful information too.
    goodluck =D

  • 2007 Mac Pro Graphics issues

Hey, I've got a 2007 Mac Pro, with the ATi X1900 XT, and since upgrading to Leopard, have had some odd graphics corruption and system hang ups.
While using any particular application, random horizontal lines will spontaneously appear across the particular application like so.
    Safari:
    http://img355.imageshack.us/img355/8757/picture1pr4.png
    Evernote:
    http://img355.imageshack.us/img355/3186/picture2ca9.png
I'm certain this is not a display related issue, since I can move the application, and the artifacts move with it. Hiding, closing, or scrolling up and down repeatedly are somewhat effective at removing the artifacts, but only temporarily.
In addition to that, square 'swatches' or blue, yellow, or pink spontaneously appear in isolated instances, although those disappear whenever I shift focus to another application, or activate Expose.
In addition, the computer will randomly freeze up when coming out of screen saver, or while using Expose or Spaces, although I am still able to move the mouse. I can still SSH into the computer as if it was fully functional, however, any attempts to 'unfreeze' the desktop are in vain.
This sounds vaguely similar to some issues with the Early 2008 Mac Pro with the nVidia card, however, I am unsure if there is any correlation between the two.
I'm running Leopard, with all available updates, and have applied to firmware update for the X1900 XT ( http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/atiradeonx1900xtfirmwareupdate.html ), although nothing has helped.
Anybody here ever experience anything similar to this, and / or have any advice on what to do?
    Thanks in advance,
    Noah

I got a replacement for my 1900XT that is the newer version but even with keeping it dust free and using smcFanControl it still has issues after extended periods of use. I'm hoping the 8800GT that just came out for 1st gen MPs doesn't start giving people problems, because if not I plan to get one this summer.
