Mac Pro - dual graphics cards?

Hi all,
I am configuring a new Mac Pro (8 core 2.93GHz) via the Apple store online, and I am wondering if anyone knows if it is possible to install the NVIDIA Quadro FX 4800 alongside the default NVIDIA GeForce GT 120?
Cheers,
ozmo

One 30" ACD
Two 20" ACD (thinking about selling and replacing with two 24" LED ACD).
My other thought process was...
Adding an ATI Radeon HD 4870 alongside the Nvidia GT 120 and essentially having two DVI and two Micro DVI ports but then I wouldn't have the over the top grunt of the Quadro
Too many options

  • 2009 Mac Pro upgrading graphics card to GTX 680 mac. What is the best version of AE and PP and OSX to have?

    Hello,
    I have a 2009 Mac Pro 4.1
    Mac OSX version 10.6.8
    Processor - 2 x 2.26 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon
    Memory - 24GB
Graphics Card - ATI Radeon HD 4870
I use After Effects and Premiere Pro daily for my work. I am not too technically minded. I want to update and improve my machine as much as possible and am thinking of buying an SSD drive to replace my current start up disk. I also am thinking about getting the GTX 680 mac version graphics card. I have read many online discussions regarding OpenCL and CUDA, many discussions with mixed feelings about the improvements the 680 gives an older Mac Pro - some people say it is amazing others say the improvements seem minimal or worse.
What I want to know is if I purchase the SSD and 680 graphics card what is the optimal OSX - 10.8 or 10.9? and what is the optimal versions of AE and PP to have - CS6 or CC? Also what settings and what additional drivers would I need to consider?
I contacted an independent authorised mac reseller and he thought it was a bad idea to put a new graphics card and get the latest OSX in an old machine and tried to sell me a used 2010 Mac Pro, but I think it would be more cost effective to get the SSD and 680 instead, it's just I read the occasional horror story on a forum and I worry about making the wrong choice, I rely on my Mac Pro to make a living!
    Thanks in advance

Thank you for the valuable information Eric, I think I will go with the 680 but I understand that it wont be fully utilised on my old Mac Pro.
Perhaps I will replace my startup/applications hard drive with a 480GB SSD. My other 3 bays are full with 3 x 2TB Hard drives that have media on them so I have no spare room for a dedicated SSD drive for AE cache. But could I put a 250GB SSD into one of the PCI-E slots using something like - SSD SuperSpeed Upgrade Kit for Apple Mac Pro 2008 2009 2010 2012 | eBay
Would this be my best solution? Is it a relatively simple installation, does anyone have any experience of a similar setup?
cc_merchant, thank you for the reply, I am aware you have to pay monthly payments for CC, that is no problem.

  • Are the Mac Pro's graphic cards are upgradeable?

    been wondering...
if i buy the basic configurtion Mac Pro will I be able to upgrade the graphic cards later on ?
everybody speaking about upgrading Ram or CPU no one speaks about the GFX

No. And you can't upgrade the RAM or SSD on a Retina either. Are you talking about Macbook Pro's or Mac Pro's?

  • Mac Pro 2009 graphics card upgrade

    Hi there!
as you probably know there are two (in my eyes at least) types of the Ati Radeon 5770 these being:
http://www.play.com/PC/PCs/4-/27669549/620722873/ATI-Radeon-HD5770-1GB-PCI-E-Gra phics-Card/ListingDetails.html?_%24ja=tsid:11518%7Ccat:27669549%7Cprd:27669549 This version seems to be more designed for the Windows side of computers
http://www.play.com/PC/PCs/4-/30974340/703247528/Apple-MC742ZM-A-Radeon-5770-Gra phic-Card-1-GB-GDDR5-SDRAM-PCI-Express-2-0-DisplayPort-DVI/ListingDetails.html?_ %24ja=tsid:11518%7Ccat:30974340%7Cprd:30974340 And this one being for Mac (at least thats how it seems)
Anyway, the cards seem to look quite unlike each other. one as you can see has some sort of picture on the top, the other is just blank.
But my question is: can my early 2009 Mac Pro use the "windows" (if it is infact for windows) graphics card? as i'm looking for an upgrade

This is an Apple-firmware one that will save you a few bucks if you live in the US (except for New York where they must add tax):
    http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=&sku=726537&Q=&is=REG&A=detail s
I guess that says you will have to pay pretty nearly what Apple charges, regardless. Otherwise you get no picture until the Mac OS X login screen.

  • Expansion - Mac Pro, Nvidia, Graphics Cards, 3d, CUDA

    Hello,
Are there any plans to make a Mac that is expandable and upgradable with regards to graphics cards? Specifically Nvidia cards. We are doing more and more 3d work and require Nvidia graphics cards for GPU rendering with CUDA. For doing any 3d work CUDA is a MUST. Even on the fastest CPU's, it's the difference between a 1976 Pinto, and a 2014 Lamborghini Aventador when it comes to rendering.
Thunderbolt expansion doesn't seem to be a possibility... While technically this should work, there is currently no support for graphics cards in external Thunderbolt chassis (to my knowledge)... and there are no drivers (nor are there plans to make any as far as I know) for Nvidia graphics cards for Mac's. I can only assume it is because there doesn't seem to be any way to expand these new Mac Pro's.
Without the ability to expand for these graphics cards, we (I and the company that I work for) are only left with a few options (as I see it).
    1)     Switch to Windows (Really?)
    2)     Linux
    3)     Create a render farm from old computers. (Not Ideal for several reasons, not the least of which is the ability to preview before final render.)
We are approaching the time for equipment upgrades, and we simply can't justifiy spending that amount of money for a computer that frankly will not do what we need it to do. Especially since a comparable PC at a third of the price, will.
Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Since silence is the only thing you get from apple on this subject here is a little help:http://www.tonymacx86.com/416-building-customac-buyer-s-guide-march-2014.html
This ongoing feud between adobe and apple leaves us, the users in a very bad position. We should have a choice.

  • Mac pro - multiple graphics cards - multiple monitors - gaming?

    Hi there
Early 2008 I purchased a mac pro, with 2 8800gts and 1 2600xt. Works amazingly well, as it was originally purchased for number crunching (video cards were purchased to take advantage of openCL in snow leopard) and more screen realestate. (3 monitors)
But the thought occurred to me... I am also a bit of a gamer...
Are there any games that take advantage of multiple video cards???
Mac or windows game recommendations are welcomed!
    Thanks!

I'm sorry if my question was a little ambiguous, let me try to rephrase.
If anyone is familiar with the Nintendo DS system, you will understand that this handheld device has 2 screens.. one is used primarily as a game screen, the second screen has the game map or console or some kind of readout or whatever. Bottom line is, the game takes advantage of 2 screens.
My question to the masses is:
Are there any games in Mac OS or Windows that take advantage of multiple monitors, and therefore multiple video cards. Not SLI or Crossfire as I understand the Mac Pro hardware does not support it. My question relates to any software titles like Flight Simulators, that can render images on 2 screens connected to 2 separate video cards.
I have a copy of XPlane, and unfortunately, it only supports multiple monitors on a single video card, not multiple monitors on multiple video cards.
    So, just rehashing,
Are there any games that are capable of rendering images or gameplay on 2 different video cards at the same time?
    If so, what are they?
Cheers and sorry for the confusion.

  • Dual graphics cards and single 4K display - Mac Pro (late 2013)

I'm considering a new Mac Pro as my next graphics/development workstation. I see that the new Mac Pros have dual graphics cards (i.e. dual D300, D500, D700.) I was wondering if there is any benefit to having the second graphics card if I only have only one 4K display connected via Display Port 1.2? Would the two cards work in tandem to output to the single 4k display? Can the second GPU still be used for OpenCL, even if it is not connected to a display?
    Thanks

There is no option to have only one Dxxx, and yes some apps do and no the number of displays does not affect video output.
Whether it is right for you vs say a maxed out iMac or something else is something you should continue to research and consider.

  • The AVI Radeon X1900 XT video card in my Mac Pro Dual-Core went bad and I need to replace it. I found one that is $250 but I don't think that I need the gaming-type processor.  I am using a 23" Apple Display. Are there lower cost options? -C

The Radeon X1900 XT video card went bad in my Mac Pro Dual-Core Intel Xeon. (I tried it with a good one at the office). I found one online that was $250. I don't need the gaming capacity of this card and was wondering if there were less expensive video cards that I could use in this machine. I run Adobe Creative Suites for graphics design and have a 23" Apply display. Thank you for any help that you can provide. -PretzelMcK

Then pick up the ATI 5770 AND upgrade to 10.6.8.
Same price for a good card that will work and helps to have 1GB VRAM.
There aren't any other real choices let alone less expensive.
Even the ebay links I had and not a lot of choices.

  • Aja Kona Card (Migrating from G5 to Mac Pro Dual-Core)

I own a small video production company.
I am migrating from an old G5 to a Mac Pro Dual Core given to me.  The Aja Kona card doesn't fit into the Mac Pro Dual-Core, as the card slots are different.
Any way to adapt the G5 compatible card to the Mac Pro slots?  I would only use for importing older analog media, as the newer HD stuff we shoot is brought in electronically.
Thanks for any help you can offer.
    DW

    Thanks, Grant.
I gave the G5 to my kids, so I'll probably just keep the Kona card/bundle in there until needed, hook up the appropriate VCR/VTR, and then dump the captured footage onto a HD to bring onto the Mac Pro.  Too bad there isn't some internal/external adapter solution...

  • How to upgrade my Macbook Pro's Graphic Card?

    I have a Early 2012 13 inch Macbook Pro and it's ***** when I play games.
    Here are the specs:
    - 2.8 GHz dual-core Intel Core i7
    - 6 GB RAM
    - Intel HD Graphics 3000 384 MB
    - OSX Mavericks 10.9.2
    - 750 GB HDD 1333 MHz DDR3
It lags a lot when I play such an old games such as GTA Vice City (the FPS drops a lot when my mac getting hot) or GTA San Andreas (quite stable). Both of them aren't modded and still original. Is there any way to upgrade my Macbook Pro's graphic card?

You cannot upgrade the Graphics card on a laptop because everything is built into the logic board. Unfortunately your perticular graphics chip is actually built into the CPU, and is a very low performing chip which would definately make gaming hard.
    Sorry for the bad news.

  • Mac Pro Dual Quad Core won't boot OS/X, but plays fine with Linux/Windows

I've got a Mac Pro Dual Quad Core won't boot OS/X, but plays fine with Linux/Windows. I've tried all of the following initial tests as suggested on forums:
    -Ram swaps
-Alternating video card in PCIe slots
    -Trying alternate video card
    -resetting pram and smc
-Multiple tests with memtest86+ over 26hrs and no failed ram
-Multiple tests (8-12 cycles) with apple HW diagnostics and no problems
-Firmware is approved firmware for early 2008 model...no new updates.
Gentoo livecd works fine and I even installed to hard drive and it boots fine with it. In addition to above tests I also ran a linux stress test putting all 8 cores at a load of 22 for 2.5hrs with no problems.
Memtest86+ for 24hrs+ yields no problems.
    Where problems occur:
Booting off hard drive, DVD or firewire yields an immediate curtain of death and booting off a new snow leopard DVD dies about 25% into the install.
Looking at error log and a quick dmesg shows "Package 0 didn't get an HPET" and complains about AppleIntelCPUPowerManagement.kext. Google turns up illegal uses of this, so doesn't apply to my use case.
I'm a bit stumped since all was working well until one day it was non-stop curtains of death and can't get them to go away.
A logic board replacement at $1100 is not a feasible option for something that works on linux and windows, but not OS/X, is a bit disappointing and somewhat surprising.
Thanks for your help and advice.
    Regards,
    Marcos

Someone here once thought they knew EFI and Open Firmware a little, and used some commands from OF library that an Intel EFI Apple system didn't like. New logicboard.
Of course to run or boot OS X and see video you need EFI based card. The presence of some PC cards can block OS X from booting.
The fact you get part way through SL DVD, pull all the drives, put in a new drive and format it from SL DVD.
Most of the things you tried are what are more common with PC hardware. Including where people have tried and failed to install OS X on unsupported hardware.
I suppose it is possible something tried and failed to modify the Mac's firmware.
If you have Windows running, and you have WD drives, WD just posted new Lifeguard utility which is what I use to do a good job of stripping a drive down and recertify it for reuse, works wonders. Maybe same for other makes with vendor utility.

  • Photoshop CS6 have problems with my dual graphics card

I'm currently using photoshop cs6 on my laptop (hp pavilion dv4 3114 ), and this laptop has dual graphics cards(one is mobile intel hd graphics, the other one is ati hd 6750), it ususlly switches to the faster one when games are running or some software that requires a lot of graphic work. But this time I have already set in the graphics card profile to let photoshop use the faster one, but when I launch photoshop cs6 it tells me that the graphics card is not officially supported, as you can see this in the screenshot.
Then I turned to photoshop's preference(performence) and found it only identifies the mobile intel hd graphics. I'm currently using photoshop for designing large posters so performence is very important for me. Is anyone know how to solve this problem so that photoshop can run with the highest performence?

II can't imagine how these computer companies expect to fully integrate GPUs from two different vendors, but they're trying.  To me, knowing a bit about how display drivers are implemented, it seems an impossible task.
I hve heard (in the context of Macs that have this option) that disabling the low power options so that only the more powerful GPU is active can help.  I don't know if that can apply to your system, but it might give you an idea of a place to start looking.
Another thing might be to try to find whatever settings it offers for "affinity" and set it so Photoshop and its cousins use just the ATI GPU exclusively.  It might be the "switchover" process that is causing the problems.
    Good luck.

  • Premiere Pro, Photoshop & Graphics Cards in SLI or Crossfire

Simple question for those who are hardware knowledgable,
Can a computer system that has dual graphics cards setup in SLI or Crossfire run Premiere Pro and Photoshop CS5.
I am not looking at whteher it will get bonuses in editing or anything, just can it run?
According to some on these forums it cannot at all but I am currently running both PS and Premiere Pro on a system with dual GTX 460 without issues.
Do anyone else have dual cards in SLI or Xfire running these programs?

    Hi,
I've tried this week installing two 6850 graphics cards with crossfire and using the latest Catalyst Control Centre (ver 13.something) and after effects worked fine but Premiere kept crashing big time. I then tried one graphics card with CCC (ver 13.something) and it still crashed. I had to use the CCC version 12 something that came with the graphics card in order to even get one card working and that doesn't seem to support the crossfire.
Ouch is my response, anyone got any ideas?

  • Running 10.6.8 on Mac Pro Dual-Core Intel Xeon 2.66GHz processors.  Can I upgrade to Lion 10.7

I've just upgraded from 10.5 to 10.6.8 on a Mac Pro Dual-Core Intell Xeon, 2.66GHz.   Is it possilbe to upgrade to Lion 10.7 with my Mac Pro Dual Core or have I just hit my ceiling on 10.6.8 update ?

Mac Pros are not PowerMacs.    In 2006, Apple changed all its cheesegrater enclosure Macs to have the Xeon chip installed, and changed the name to Mac Pro at that that time from PowerMac G5.  That said, all Mac Pros can upgrade to a minimum of 10.7.5.   Only the earliest ones can't upgrade to 10.8 and above.   10.7 and later do not have Rosetta, the ability to run PowerPC (pre-2006) applications natively.  For other pitfalls, read this tip.

    Hi
As far as I know this theme has been already discussed here in the forum and the switch between internal and external ATI GPU is not supported.
Just the Optimus technology designed by nVidia is supported
So you can switch between Intel GPU and nVidia (if both would support the Optimus technology)
