Mac Pro DVD Burner

I am looking for a recommendation on which DVD Burner I should get to replace the one I got in my new Mac Pro. For some unknown reason I can't get a disc to burn that is viewable in my DVD player. My old G4 worked great!
I don't know if it is because I am using an older version of Toast (Toast 6.0) or if it is the DVD burner in my new computer. Any advice would be great as to next steps to resolve this issue.
Thanks!!!

I would suggest that you try burning a DVD with iDVD before you spend a lot of time looking for alternative drives. It could well be Toast, as Toast 6 is indeed quite old (as software goes) and may not be compatible with your Intel-based Mac. If iDVD successfully burns a video DVD, then you will know it's a problem with Toast. If iDVD also fails (use DVD-R disks for best compatibility with standalone players), then Apple should replace the drive under warranty.

how about the HD DVD Burning .. should i buy HD DVD Burner or the mac pro DVD Writer will solve this problem? and it will burn HD DVD SL-15GB and DL-30GB ?
You cannot burn a 15 or 30 Gig DVD from DVD SP and it is not supported by DVD SP. You can build those to a hard drive for replication
also what is the basic steps to creat the HD project in HD DVD not the DVD 5 and compatible with the toshiba player?
    Best Regard.
You can make a HD DVD on the DVD 5 which will play with the Toshiba and it will give HD quality (and will not play on an SD player) video results, though you cannot author the extras that HD has (the new features in HD as compared to SD DVD), pretty much menus and playback of video. The steps above will create the DVD 5. Have not tried writing to a DVD 9 size for more running time

  • Multiple Burn on Mac Pro/DVD Studio Pro

I have been searching the internet and this forum. I have added a second optical drive to my Mac Pro. It is a Pioneer DVR-1810. Am I able to burn to DVD's at once in DVD STUDIO PRO?

No, you cannot burn more than one at a time within DVDSP.
But you can burn two at a time with Disk Utility. To do this, change the burner name in the DVDSP format dialog to "hard disk". It will then allow you to burn to a disk image on the hard drive. Then open up that disk image in Disk Utility. When you click Burn in Disk Utility, there is a popup menu in the dialog for which burner to use. After starting the first burn you can start a 2nd one and choose the 2nd burner in the popup list.
This works well for single layer DVDs. I haven't tried it with DL DVDs so I don't know what will happen with the dual layer break point.

  • Mac Pro DVD drive flaky

My Mac Pro 2006 DVD (Sony D-150A) drive is being flaky--it will read replicated CDs & DVDs, read and burn CDRs, but not DVDRs of any kind--video, data, + or - media. I can record DVD data/media, it just won't play back. Anyone else experience this particular issue? Wondering if a lens cleaning disc will do the trick, or if I should just can it. Seems that ATAPI drives are becoming difficult to find--anyone know if a generic drive will work, or do I have to invest in a "Mac" only drive?
    Any suggestions will be appreciated!

Cleaner discs are so cheap, it is definitely worth a shot.

  • Mac Pro DVD Drive Weirdness

    Here's my problem:
I have a Mac Pro (Dual-Core), and the DVD drive is becoming increasingly flaky. Any DVD Video I burn from the internal drive from DVD Studio Pro projects to client MP4 files (I use either Toast Titanium 8 or 10) will play on any other computer (Windows or Mac) and even on cheap set-top DVD players, but won't play back on my drive. Mass-produced DVD, CD, and even CD-R media work fine. I've been using DVD+R media for about 3 years with no issues before now.
I've cleaned the lens with a Q-tip and 99% isopropyl alcohol, I've reset all the connections, tried different media (including Taiyo Yuden) and different burn speeds, and all I get is either  "blank disc" or "Unreadable Disc" dialogs when I insert the disc after burning. Did I mention that this is pretty embarassing in front of clients?
So, before I use my drive for target practice, I'd like to know if anyone can recommend any kind of process that might be causing this (repairing permissions, trashing prefs, etc.). If the drive is end-of-life, fine--I just want to know one way or the other.
As usual, thanks in advance for any and all helpful info...

  • Mac Pro DVD drive won't load some software discs

I just bought two sets of Photoshop Elements, and my 2007 Mac Pro failed to recognize all six DVDs. I'm realizing I've had this problem with a few software discs in recent years, including some Final Cut Studio install discs. CDs and regular DVDs work fine - just some software DVDs are eventually ejected by the computer without showing up on the desktop. I have tried cleaning the drive with a disc cleaner.
My way around it has been to put these discs in my PC, make a copy, and then these copies load fine in my Mac. But it's a nuisance, and my PC won't be around forever.
Can anyone suggest what the problem might be? Or a decent external drive (Blu-ray?) that I might want to replace it with?
    Thanks.

I'll try that tomorrow. Thinking it could also be:
    1)  The PRAMM battery. found info on that they can wear out close to 5 years. This MAC PRO is close to that now.  And I use a lot of power on it.
    2) MAC PRO is plugged into a  SURGE PROTECTOR, instead of right into the wall outlet.
    3) Been doing a lot of FORCE QUITS and HARD BOOT -- unplugging it directly when it wouldn't shut down soon enough --  lately this past year.
I just assumed that this MAC PRO with the XEON QUAD CORE etc., was a heavy duty enough NLE,
that i wouldn't have these problems. It's not fully loaded with all the chips it can carry...and I don't have near enough external terabyte hard drives for storing video and audio files to edit. I've been storing wayyy too much
on the internal hard dives and just have to stop that.
I noticed these past few days that much of the LETTERING for hard drive icons and folders' titles
were starting to look in OVERLAPPING of the lettering. That was my first hint that  something was up.

  • Mac Pro DVD drive door sticking problems...

    Hi all...
The aluminum drive door on one of my Mac Pro's 2 DVD drives sticks in the open ("down") position about 9 times out of 10 when in use. It has done this since I received it from Apple. Not a functional issue at all, so I didn't even think about sending it back at the time of arrival, thinking it might be just a bit stiff and "new"...
Now, over time, it has begun to get more annoying. I have tried everything in order to get it to work, sometimes seeming to have it fixed, but it ALWAYS returns to the "original state" of "stickiness"!!! Again, not a huge problem, but I'd like to get it seen about and figure out how to fix it once and for all. Anyone else having the same problem? I cannot take my Mac out of service, and this seems like such a simple thing...

Another poster fixed theirs by doing this…

  • Mac Pro DVD Drive "Perma Sleep" - Any thoughts?

I have a MacPro with the following DVD drive in it:

    Interconnect: ATAPI
    Burn Support: Yes (Apple Shipped/Supported)

This morning I was burning a CD-R from iTunes. The burn finished and the system locked up with the "curtain of death".
Upon reboot I found that the DVD drive will spin at boot up, will eject from the keyboard, but it does not respond to any disc inserted in it. When inserting a disc, there is no spin up, no response from the system. I have inserted:
    - Blank CD-R
    - Blank DVD-R
    - Recorded CD-R
    - Purchased (factory made) CDs and DVDs
none of which respond. In response I have attempted:
    - Resetting the machine, left it un- plugged for several hours, still not working
    - Resetting the PRAM by booting with CMD-OPT-P-R
    - Facing towards Cupertino and offering a bowl of corn flakes as snackrafice
None of which worked. Any thoughts, or is it take it to be repaired time?
    Thanks
    Bruce

Sounds like it is toast. You can get an immediate replacement at the Apple store. DIY replacement is very easy. OWC has a video on how. You can also find a replacement at a greatly reduced price from Newegg or OWC, but the immediate gratification will be missing during shipping. If it's under warranty, the Apple store should give you a new one, or I think they should and not have you wait for one to be shipped or require you to bring in your MP. Thes things are heavy!

  • Does the Mac pro DVD player play Blu-ray discs?

I suspect the answer is no, because the only DVD's that don't work in my player are blu-ray. But if someone can confirm this for me that would be great. If I need to download software to make my DVD player Blu-ray please direct me to the right site.
    S. Walker

You can use a third-party BD drive to read and write data discs. However, there is no built-in software to play video BD's, even if you have a drive that can read them. I don't know whether there is now any third-party software that can play those discs; the last time I remember checking, there was not. It's technically (but not legally) possible to convert BD's to a format that can play natively on the Mac, but that subject can't be discussed within the terms of use of this site.
The copy protection on BD's won't allow them to be played at full resolution on an external display without end-to-end hardware copy protection (HDCP) in the graphics subsystem.

  • Mac Pro DVD writer don't work CD writer does

Any way to troubleshoot a "Windows encountered a problem when trying to copy to this folder. What do you want Windows to do" error when I try and drag and drop files to my DVD/CD readwriter?

I wuld try a different brand. It's possible that you simply got a bad batch of DVD+Rs. My suggestion would be to try Verbatim DVD+Rs and if they fail, call ApleCare to see if you can get a replacement DVD drive.

  • Will burn my Mac Pro a DVD-RW DL or DVD+RW DL ?

I need to do a lot of proof with DVD DL and I think that would be cheaper for me if I use a RW DL, the problem is that I don't know if my Mac Pro will burn such a DVDs.
