Mac Pro extremely slow doing anything

Mac Pro, Dual-Core Intel Xeon, 2.66 ghz, 4 GB memory
Help needed . . .
My boot disk died and not able to mount anywhere
Passed all TechTool Pro hardware tests, tests ran at normal speed
Won't boot from Retail Leopard 10.5 disc
Startup with original OS10.4.9 disc and run Disk Utility . . .
- partition a new drive with GUID partition table . . . took ten minutes
- install OS, 1st disc . . . overnight to finish
- would not finish OS install, 2nd disc
Any suggestions will be appreciated
Best . . . jc

This is not a GPT issue. Or with the product.
Leopard DVD came in 10.5.3 and 10.5.6 (after the 10.5.0) and otherwise sounds like an OEM from another Early 2008 Mac Pro - not retail
10.6.3 DVD is $29
Have you run Apple Hardware Test?
Checked that those FBDIMMs are okay, not overheating or something?

  • Mac Pro extremely slow in Logic score

For many years Logic score has been neglected. The score function is slow, crashes easily etc.
SO I decided to buy the fastest Mac Pro, installed everything clean from the beginning, even made new template songs, and guess what: as slow as an Atari in 1992!
Try it yourself: move a note or sign in a score from one spot to another with the mouse, and it takes Logic nearly 3 seconds to calculate its new position.
Does anyone have suggestions how to live with this?
I go back to my G5 dual 2.5, which has the same problem, but less slow than the Mac Pro.

Not sure of your experience, of score in L.P.
But i know, the wait will be over, in a matter of days weeks are a few months, then we be flying, just remember apple got the best on board.
As to logic/pro almost 5years no major up-lift, and just guessing why logic/pro is limited to two 2ghz of samples, 5years ago apple computer did,nt use more than 2ghz of memory so there was no need to step the limit up on logic/pro, where as, at that time, it was the dual 1.2 g4 was the fastest mac and so with the fastest mac today takes 16 ghz so i cant see it not being at least 8ghz of samples, for logic, even if we dont use 8ghz, it only means it will work more smooth, just a bit of my two cent, this have nothing to do with lepoard, being 64, and will run twice as, we are talking Major-D.A.W. upgrade, bug fix, new feature, auto-rewire, editing in audio nice and easy like the pro's with pitch & time, better compressor, syn, piano, last but not least give m-audio a bring in with delta 1010 being pci-e .
    powerM\G4-1.25DUAL   Mac OS X (10.4.4)   I used dellta 1010 soundcard.prologic 7,1.5 gigs MEMORY.EXTENAL SYNS. MACKIE32-08 Mixing Desk.

  • Mac Pro has slowed to a crawl - Please Help Me!

    Hello,
For some time now my Wireless or Wired Internet connection using my Mac Pro has slowed to almost nothing. For example, This page took 5 mins to load and now Internet use has become unusable.
I feel its my Mac Pro because all other Apple Computer run very fast wirelessly. I have (2) New iMac's (1) Apple TV and (1) Apple iPhone. All stream and surf the Internet blazingly fast.
My Mac Pro is constantly being redirected to other sites (mostly **** related) and a huge amount of Pop ups (even though pop ads are disabled in Safari). All Internet browsers perform the same on my Mac Pro or ANYTHING Internet related including WoW, Software updates or even iTunes Music Down loads.
I really feel that in some way (which is shocking) I am infected with "something" that is making my computer crawl on the Internet. Redirection of websites is just now very aggravating.
I am looking at the (2) Original Disks that came inside the Mac Pro Box. I'm seriously considering wiping my system clean and starting from scratch.
I currently hold NOTHING on my Factory 320GB HD other than programs.
I have installed (2) 1TB drives and created a RAID slice thus creating a single HD icon on my desktop that reads 1.8TB. Thats is where all my Music, Photos, and Movies reside.
    My question is....
When I wipe my system will that RAID be broken? Will I lose everything on those 2 drives or will using the restore CD's leave all that information in tact?
Please let me know before I proceed.
    Thank you for your time.
    John

Your RAID won't be touched. But back it up today if you haven't yet!
I use Firefox for security with noscript and some other filters, but I also hardened the router firewall to manually block services, ports and add rules - both incoming and outgoing.
You might want to look at LittleSnitch or NetBarrier and do some logging.
I've seen/heard where older routers and modems were fine, but not with Mac Pro or with Intel Macs in general and needed to be replaced or firmware updated. Problems with the latest updates for Airport have been seen by some, and worth checking into - on forums, news sites or hit google.
And of course check what processes are getting loaded and run; manually delete caches, history, metadata, even the bookmarks cache.
    ~/Library/Caches/Metadata
There are issues with fake Flash updates; normal sites (like CNN) suffering from SQL-injection. Best to run with javascript off for now.
Might want to look into ClamXav and other malware protection. But I would switch and see how Firefox and Opera behave. And turn off java, script, and plug-ins while you consider your options and try to find out why.

  • Mac pro too slow to use, spinning ball, no finder response, only hard power off, installing system stalls at 18 minutes left.

mac pro too slow to use, spinning ball, no finder response, only hard power off, installing system stalls at 18 minutes left.
It is taking an hour to power up and mac apple logo appear onscreen. No finder controls or "clicks" are being recognized. Spinning beachball all the time.
Using hard power off and holding the mouse down, I was able to open the optical drive and then restart with "c" and ask the dvd to reinstall the system, but it has stalled before finishing the installation.
This happened about 4 days ago, first it started responding slowly, and then it just keeps spinning the beachball. I can't find hardware test. I did run etrecheck, it did not have any error messages, but I can't copy or move the data anywhere.... I am not able to access the mac pro with another machine, and now I am stuck in install freeze, so I can't copy etrecheck by hand onto a piece of paper.
Without being able to finish a reinstall, what can I try?
After it got bad, and before it got REALLY bad, I managed to repair permissions, but it took a long time. Most of a day. When I restarted from that, things were only worse.
Mac Pro 1,1 , 11 GB ram, 7300, 5TB hard drives, OS 10.6.8,  the drive containing the system folder is/was 700 used, 290 free. While I could get commands to respond, I put Activity monitor on the desktop and watched it.  System memory was 3.31 GB used, about 7 free, and some wired. No app was using a huge amount.
what should I try next? I put a bid on a new/old machine so that I could move the 4 hard drives over.

Thank you for all your suggestions. Please correct me as I articulate this.
I have three versions( 5, 6, CC) of the Adobe Master Collection which I keep active for different clients. I have final cut and motion. I have Office 365. I have a collection of graphic apps that are individually not too big but in all, my app folder is 65GB and my bootcamp partition is 61GB. I can't fit all this on 120 ssd and a 256 will be full once I install, correct? drives should be half open?
Somehow I did not make it clear enough that I was trying to copy onto a 2TB drive I had just initiallized in order to try and save files from my startup drive. I don't use time machine. I take a day or a few days worth of documents and physically move them to another drive at night.  If a series is finished I make two dvd's as well. The second black drive that was failing was the drive I moved my backup documents onto. At no point was I trying to backup onto the failing drives. I was trying to copy off both of them onto the other two drives, a third aux backup that has been there for a while, and a newish 2 TB which I designated as the startup drive when all this trouble started.
I wondered if there were any good techniques for trying to get the data off the failing drive. Thanks for the suggestion of Data Rescue 3. I don't have it yet, but I will try it as soon as I get it. I was never trying to repair in place.
I am very interested in getting a pci bracket and an ssd, but I may wait until I can afford the larger one. If I get an older bracket that is compatible with my old mac pro 1,1  ,  I'd like to be able to move it to a mac pro 3,1 if I get one. Will the larger ssd drives be compatible with the sata in a pci bracket that can work in my mac pro 1,1 ? sata 2 versus something else? If 240 or 256 is my size limit, how much more than my 65 and 61 GB partitions can I put on there? How much of a scratch disc can I make if I leave another 39 GB of headroom on my bootcamp partition? I'm filling 165 GB without making any allowance for temp files.
You have said that 120 is enough for any system. I think I must be misunderstanding something. Are you saying that assuming that most people run office and photoshop and maybe lightroom?
I have and use 4 HDD in this machine, mostly for document storage in two places.
I took out all but the group of 2GB ram chips I bought a year and a half ago. The old ram had passed the hardware test the last time I had access to the hardware test. Two black drives failed, one was a year old and one was a year and a half old, and that it may have been exacerbated by the heat wave. I don't know why the video and the monitor were affected save that the startup drive was failing. I am trying to replace the card.
With all this said, I am also looking at a used mac pro 3,1 with a better video card since a newer machine will likley be compatible through another OS upgrade. If a machine costs only a little more than a new card, it might be a better way to go.
I don't have any sources that offer an ssd for 100. ( of a size that is useful)
How large is your application folder?

  • HT1338 My Mac Pro is slow. Any suggestions?

My Mac Pro is slow. Any suggestions?

Mac Pro or macbook pro?  Your profile says macbook pro.
    For starters:
    Try smc and pram reset.
Boot from you recovery partition and repair/verify your drive (not repair permissions).

  • HT1338 mac pro runs slow since I installed mountain lion

mac pro runs slow since i installed mountain lion

First, back up all data immediately, as your boot drive might be failing.
There are a few other possible causes of generalized slow performance that you can rule out easily.
If you have many image or video files on the Desktop with preview icons, move them to another folder.
If applicable, uncheck all boxes in the iCloud preference pane.
Disconnect all non-essential wired peripherals and remove aftermarket expansion cards, if any.
Otherwise, take the steps below when you notice the slowdown.
    Step 1
Launch the Activity Monitor application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Activity Monitor in the icon grid.
Select the CPU tab of the Activity Monitor window.
Select All Processes from the menu in the toolbar, if not already selected.
Click the heading of the % CPU column in the process table to sort the entries by CPU usage. You may have to click it twice to get the highest value at the top. What is it, and what is the process? Also post the values for % User, % System, and % Idle at the bottom of the window.
Select the System Memory tab. What values are shown in the bottom part of the window for Page outs and Swap used?
Next, select the Disk Activity tab. Post the approximate values shown for Reads in/sec and Writes out/sec (not Reads in and Writes out.)
    Step 2
If you have more than one user account, you must be logged in as an administrator to carry out this step.
Launch the Console application in the same way you launched Activity Monitor. Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Select the 50 or so most recent entries in the log. Copy them to the Clipboard (command-C). Paste into a reply to this message (command-V). You're looking for entries at the end of the log, not at the beginning.
When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some personal information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting. That should be easy to do if your extract is not too long.

  • Macbook Pro Extremely Slow All Of A Sudden, Wiped Completely and Problem Persists

My 2012 Macbook Pro has slowed down to nearly a crawl in just about everything I try to do, espescially with anything that utilizes the internet.  Activity Moniter initially revealed the issue to be the Kernal_Task proccess using too much memory as well as com.apple.finder. Also, Spotlight was indexing constantly until I disabled my disk from being accesed by it within the privacy tab of Spotlight Preference. The spinning beach ball of death has appeared more times in the past few days then I have ever seen in the entire year I've had my Macbook Pro.
I literally tried everything that I could find. I've done everything from resetting the Pram and the other thing (I forgot the name but when you hold down four keys at once during start up). I've tried killing proccesses, rebooting my mac several times, closing out programs, deleting all applications, just about eveything you can think of. Safari, Google Chrome, and Firefox were all extremely slow. Attemping to verify disk permissions or repair failed because of the sheer amount of time it was taking. I let the computer sit for an entire day and it seemed to make little to no progress in repairing the disk. I even booted the computer in Safe Mode and it was stil performing poorly.
The issue is NOT Hard Drive space on my Macbook. I know this because it was working perfectly fine and then all of sudden started behaving like this. All of these issues ultimately led to me doing something many others wouldn't, WIPING MY ENTIRE MAC AND RESTORING FROM FACTORY SETTINGS.
The issue STILL persists although not as severe. Internet browing is bearable but nowhere near perfomring as it should. Even simple task such as opening up a new tab or switching tabs results in a spinning beach ball for about 5-10 seconds. Opening an application such as Pages or Twitter results in a spinning beach ball for 5-10 seconds before working slowly. Simply right clicking results in spinning beach ball.
I have no idea what the issue could be at this point. I am now about to attempt to verify the disk again to see if it fixes any issues but a year old Apple product should NOT be behaving like this.
    Any advice is appreciated!

    Melophage,
I've been scouring the community for help, and hoping you might be able and willing to look at my etrecheck results and share any wisdom and feedback, problem causers you see! I updated to OS Mavericks through apple updates without really realizing I was installinga  whole new system. I have been experiencing the lag issues that many others have, and have a Kernel_Task for which the CPU skyrockets at random and consistently slows things down. I've run disk repair in recovery mode, repaired permission, PRAM, a few 'basics', but have not really had success in addressing the issue (I guess because I don't really understand the issue!)
Thanks in advance for any time and suggestions!!

  • Mac Pro very slow with NAS (network attached storage) after OSX Update

    *Hello,*
**I seem to have a rather unknown problem because after hours of google'ing I found nothing.**
**I'm working on a late 2008 Mac Pro with the 8 core Nehalem processor and 12 gigs of ram and some other hardware like a Blackmagic Decklink HD extreme.**
**(If you care to know the exact specs I can gives those to you, but right now I'm degrading the Mac Pro to 10.6.0.)**
**The Mac Pro connects via an ethernet cable > ethernet breakout > directly to an Mac Pro G5 PPC on a CAT5.E ethernet cable.**
**This G5 is running leopard and has our hard drives and RAID connected to it of which we work on our Mac Pro 2008. Normally this gives us the ability to read with over 100 mb/s and write at about 70 mb/s (Blackmagic diskspeed test).**
**But recently our drives got really, really slow. It wouldn't even play PAL footage realtime in our Final Cut timeline.**
**But as we downgrade to 10.6.0 this problem is gone. So we think that when we upgrade to 10.6.5, the problem initiates.**
**How does this happen and, more importantly, how do we get rid of this?!**
**Good to know; our 27" iMac or any other device in this building _does not have_ this problem. It's just the Mac Pro after an update.**
    **Please help us out.**
    **Kind regards,**
    *W.*

I have the same problem with any mac that has 10.6.  On macs that I can go back to 10.5 on they work fine and fast.  I install a used system at a client and that CPU is new enough to not be able to revert to 10.5 and their NAS is so slow that it is unless. So it's Apple's problem, they broke the protocol for NAS in 10.6 and will not fix it.  My clients don't want to make the Move to 10.7 at this time,I am not eve sure if NAS will work well with 10.7 and I think Apple has to rethink its policy of forces us to upgrade to the lastest OS to get their problems fixed.  Fix 10.6 to NAS protocol.
Maybe we don't need major system upgrades every year..  Fix the current system before you give us more problems with a major OS upgrade.
Now I might sound tainted, but I have been an Apple person since the first, Apple II came to market.. I sold many of them.  So lets not go back to Apple 1980's when they couldn't get anything right..  They may be all powerful, now but they need to remember when there were rumors of them being sold and the stock sold for $11.00 a share.
I have searched for a fix, and many forums have stated the problem, but I just can't figure why they haven't relized that Apple mess up the protocol in 10.6.  Its simple, everything works fine on 10.5 they forced us to upgrade to 10.6 and it's broke.  go back to 10.5 and it's fixed.  So logic states that Apple's 10.6 is different when it comes to NAS protocols...  Simple...  Fix go back to 10.5  Real fix..   Apple needs to fix it with a patch to 10.6
I have no problems with someone proving me wrong that it works fine, in 10.5 and is broken, very slow in 10.6..

  • MacBook Pro Extremely Slow / Sluggish

I have a MacBook Pro latest edition 13" with 2.66 processor 8GB RAM and 500GB HD. It has been extremely slow. Opening applications can take ages. Opening Pages can take 2 minutes to create a blank page and iMovie can be as long. The spinning beach ball appears when typing in Filemaker Pro and stops anything from happening for 30 seconds or so every now and then. Apps frequently go into (not responding). I went to the Apple Store Genius Bar and they said that there has been a problem with Migration Assistant (I have been migrating Macs for many years) and perhaps shifting some apps has made the system sludgy. Their suggestion is a complete wipe, restore and rebuild. Which I'm not much looking forward to doing. Does anyone have any other ideas.

Running Applejack might help in this situation. (Probably not necessary -- Applejack is quite safe -- but you should have a backup.) You probably want to run "applejack AUTO," which will do a full sequence of tasks. Then go back in and run "applejack" just for tasks 3 & 4 for your users. It may require several restarts for you to see the full benefits. The first restart will be slower than usual as it rebuilds caches.

  • Mac Pro runs slow after upgrading to mavericks?

    I can't figure it out..
Been a mac user sinc Macintosh then mac plus.
First time i have no explanation.
I upgraded my 2010 Dual Quad Mac Pro 96gb ram, ran so very very fast with Sonnet 4 port eSATA and MOTU PCIE 424 card.
Ever since i upgraded it is so SLLLLOOOWWW!!. I have tired re-installing, contacted all the hardware vendors and software vendors, got all the updates.
I cant figure out why it is running like a 20 year old computer?. I get the wheel, Finder hangs allot, will not relaunch. I take out ALL THE THIRD PARTY CARDS, and boot, still runs like a turtle. Adobe creative suite slow, Aperature takes hrs to update library. Tried creating a new library. Still slow. Avid Media composer, Final Cut Pro X is so slow at rendering i can drive to Santa Cruz from Santa Barbara to MAvericks surf spot go surfing and come home to find out it is 95% done. Also copying large 20 gig folders from one internal to another takes hrs. used to take minuts.
I need help! It is so unpleasent using my mac pro now, , miserable user experience. I dread booting as it takes 5 min to go. I have dual monitors. Apple NVIDA card. could it be CUDA?  no updates availble. I removed all the third party cards, and nothing happens. Removed all usb, FW, etc pluged in usb mouse from Apple Factory.
What ever happend there must be a patch or fix? all of my friends with Macs all having same slow issue. Please offer some fixes.
    1. Is there a way to __Un-install Mavericks? and return my computer back to previous OS? without ruining or formating HD?
It seems like the only solution. I would Purchase a new MAc Pro, but none of my studio takes thunderbolt, and it is so exspensive i am cornerd. I would be so happy if i could just remove Mavericks, instead of taping aspirine all over my Macs. Please Apple send an update that fixes this. Just google it 100,00's of users? we all love Apple, we need you to help us help you! anyone? please help.
    Please help!!
    Kiind Regards
    B

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve your problem.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. All it does is to gather information about the state of your computer. That information goes nowhere unless you choose to share it on this page. However, you should be cautious about running any kind of program (not just a shell script) at the request of a stranger on a public message board. If you have doubts, search this site for other discussions in which this procedure has been followed without any report of ill effects. If you can't satisfy yourself that the instructions are safe, don't follow them.
Here's a summary of what you need to do: Copy a line of text from this web page into the window of another application. Wait for the script to run. It usually takes a couple of minutes. Then paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page. The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. Details follow.
    4. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    5. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply.
    6. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking  anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in your browser, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    7. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
When you launch Terminal, a text window will open with a line already in it, ending either in a dollar sign ($) or a percent sign (%). If you get the percent sign, enter
    exec sh
in the window and press return. You should then get a new line ending in a dollar sign.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste (command-V). The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know your password, or if you prefer not to enter it, just press return three times at the password prompt.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that takes administrator privileges.
The test may take up to a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line "[Process completed]" to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report your results. No harm will be done.
    8. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
When you post the results, you might see the message, "You have included content in your post that is not permitted." It means that the forum software has misidentified something in the post as a violation of the rules. If it happens, please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
Note: This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

  • MacBook Pro extremely slow start up, Rainbow wheel of death. HELP!

    Hi there
My Mac has just suddenly started becoming very slow. Upgraded to Mavericks 2 months ago. Had an issue at first install that was resolved with re-installation.
Has become very slow to boot, freezing at the Grey Screen with the Apple and spining cog. (Kernel I think?)
It is also very slow once logged in. Nothing has changed system wise. Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks for all the suggestions guys, I'm not too Mac savvy, so the help is very much appreciated. So here's what I've done...
Had already tried to delete CleanMyMac. So I got EasyFind, and used it to delete/destroy the rest of the files. Did the same for Roxio, Sierra Wireless and Seagate. PaceAp would have been installed with Pro Tools, which is now gone.
There are several files associated with Sierra, PaceAp and Seagate (.plist & .bom files) that I cannot delete, as I get an error saying that cannot be deleted.
Tried Verifying and Repairing Disk Permissions - All was OK
Ran through the Sleep, then Restart, then Shutdown sequence. Noticed no difference.
    Reset P-Ram.
    Reset SMC
Rebooted again, holding command + R and ran the disk utility.
First Verified the disk. Got errors:
    Invalid Directory item count
Volume bitmap needs minor repair for orphaned blocks
The volume Machintosh HD was found corrupt and needs to be repaired.
So I then ran Repair disk, it ran through and then said:
The volume Machintosh HD was repaired successfully.
    The battery condition is normal
      Charge Information:
      Charge Remaining (mAh):          5420
      Fully Charged:          Yes
      Charging:          No
      Full Charge Capacity (mAh):          5482
      Health Information:
      Cycle Count:          806
      Condition:          Normal
      Battery Installed:          Yes
      Amperage (mA):          0
      Voltage (mV):          12401
I then rebooted, but nothing has changed. At the moment it boots to the grey screen with the Apple logo and cogwheel. Takes about 10 mins to then go through to log in. Often the fan will start running as if the system is under load.
When I click login the rainbow wheel pops up and it freezes for a while. Then it eventually loads the home page. Takes another 10 - 20 mins to load everything, the clock and wifi connections in the top right take ages to load.
It will be extremely slow for another 20 mins or so. Cant open folders or do simple tasks without getting the rainbow wheel. Then after a little while it seems to run OK, but still sluggish.
There are no programs that are launched on startup, and I close all programs before shutting the system down. I have over 100 GB free space on the harddrive. Yet I notice in the data from EtreCheck, it states there is only 66 Gb.
Haven't used Time Machine, as my external harddrive is formatted to FAT32, and I have nowhere to store all its contents to reformat it to Mac Extended Journal.  I have backed up all the files from the system that I need.
So is there anything else I can try? Should I try a full system wipe and reinstallation? If so, how do I go about this?
I'm assuming unlike PC's, it's not just a simple task to replace the harddrive, if it is failing hardware?
I'm in rural Australia, so not readily near a Mac Support Shop. But if it is hardware, I'll just have to figure out some way to get to one.
Here's the updated info from EtreCheck, if its of any use..
Thanks again everyone the help, muchos gracias!

  • Macbook Pro extremely slow all of a sudden, impossible to use.

Friday afternoon my Mac froze and after powering down and restarting, it has been extremely slow. Before now it was running perfectly.  Now, it takes about 20 minutes to start up and then about another 20 minutes to load the dock and another 20 minutes to open an app, etc. It's impossible to use. I get the loading wheel between every word I type.
After running in safe mode/repairing hard drive/etc. nothing had changed. So I just decided to backup all of my stuff and try to restore it to factory settings. I erased the hardrive and set up my computer again. It's still running the same way though. Extremely slow, impossible to use.
I'm running on Mavericks 10.9.3. Is there anything I could do or could this be something like a failing hard drive?
I bought my mac about 8 months ago. I already made an appointment at the genius bar for tomorrow night but I would really really rather not have to go. The store near me is just horrible, they make up excuses to why your warranty might be void and they are just plain rude, from my experience and from what I've heard from many others they don't really know what they're doing.

    tiffanyisweird,
your AHT should have been reïnstalled with the factory reset. It could well be copying the AHT to your internal disk now over the Internet.
Is that second closest store an Apple store, or an Apple-authorized service center? You might find that there’s an Apple-authorized service center closer than that second Apple store. (I’m about three hours away from my closest Apple store, but my closest Apple-authorized service center is less than two hours away.)

  • Why is my MacBook Pro extremely slow

    Hi.
My MacBook Pro has recently began to run extremely slow. I have tried several clean up guides from you tube, but so far nothing has helped.
My battery is completely dead, so I only run with the charger connected.
I have done the etreecheck and here are the results:
    Problem description:
My Mac is running extremely slow

Hope someone will be able to help and guide me through a clean up.

nothing seems out of order, apart from the useless Norton Internet Security.
though, since you don't have lots of RAM, consider rebooting the Mac everyso often ( "Time since boot: 7 days 3:2:21").
"  Battery Health: Replace Now": indeed, the battery is dead
Did it start getting slow since Yosemite upgrade? (the new OS does tend to slow things down)

While 4GB may have been fine with Snow Leopard or Lion, that was 4 years ago.
If you have never done a clean install consider doing one. Backup, clone, setup a USB installer and wipe the system. Or wait for the new internal 500GB drive (so you are back to using about 50%) to do a clean install and run Setup Assistant. You would be surprised how even just that can feel and run.
RAM is pretty much a given so when you do, look at putting a 500GB SSD in there as well.
