I just ordered FCP 4 and can't get it to open on my Mac Pro - it's asking for a G4 500 MHz & AGP - what do I need to do in order to remedy this situation?

Just ordered FCP 4? From where? That is very old software...2+ years.

Installing new hard drive in Mac Pro - question about compatibility.

I'm looking to install an extra internal hard drive in my 2009 Mac Pro, but I need to know if there are any compatibility issues with newer hard drives. I am looking at the Western Digital WD1002FAEX Caviar Black:

Suggestions for upgrading 3 Mac Pro FCP edit stations

I want to upgrade our three Mac Pro (Power PC) FCP5 edit stations. Our Mac Pro G5s currently access a Xraid/Xserve/Xsan fiber network. There seems to be plenty of speculation out there that Apple is discontuing the Mac Pro line and FCP X is not compatible with our exisitng projects - which number in the hundreds. So, I might be leaning toward new high-end iMacs using FCP7 but I'm not sure how to network them and share FCP projects. Any suggestions on where to go from here are appreciated. Thanks.

Probably the most important thing that you'll be losing on an iMac is the Fibre Channel connection; however, Promise Technologies has their SANLink - Fibre Channel adapter using Thunderbolt Technology (I don't know if it's actually shipping yet),

The upside here is that if this adapter works as expected, you could use any Mac with Thunderbolt (all the current models have it). Even though the Mac mini is the least powerful of the Apple line, it's a huge performace leap over a PowerMac G5 and the Mac mini supports both a computer display via its Thunderbolt/Display PortMini and a HDMI TV via its HDMI out. This takes perfect advantage of FCP Digital Cinema Desktop modes.
*** Which version of FCP do you own?
Another issue is going to be your FCP software installers (which I'm sure you're already aware of). Your PowerMac G5s must be running Final Cut Pro 6 or older as 6 was the last version to run on a PowerPC. And Final Cut Pro 5 was the first version that could be installed on an Intel based Mac.
In theory, FCP5, 6 or 7 will run on an intel Mac, however, the current Mac OS and support for it is probably going to be your biggest issue for everything that curently works as expected on your G5s.
The upgrade from FCP 5 to 6 or 7 is as easy as it gets other than having to order Final Cut Pro Studio 3 directly from Apple (last I read, they're still selling it if you call them with the part number and you say you need it for exisiting projects).
*** Do you use 3rd party capture cards like the Blackmagic-Designs Decklink? Blackmagic makes a Thunderbolt replacement which should work fine on its own, but will need to be carefully tested with the Fibre Channel adapter.
Be ready to be on the phone with tech support, checking user forums, and make sure you can take anything that you're purchased back.

With Edius I work in real time, can you tell me if I will use Mac Pro, Ram 4Giga, FCP if have I do rendering often? I'm sorry my inexperience but I like to understand. I like to know if for normal editing (I make documentaries only) I will works fine.

Mac Pro and monitor compatibility

Just ordered a new Mac Pro (ATI Radeon HD 4870 512MB), couldn't afford an apple display.
I'm looking to take advantage of the dual monitor option.
Can anyone tell me whether I need an adapter to connect the following monitors? Or even if the following monitors will work with the NEW Mac Pro?
Main monitor - Samsung T220 22" TFT Monitor 1680x1050 20,000:1 2ms VGA/DVI.
Secondary monitor - Dell E151FPp 15" VGA.

Be careful about mixing the 4870 with third party monitors. Make sure to test it out thoroughly before you return period is up. There have been display issues with the 4870 and any third party monitors. It is not guaranteed, however quite common.
Check for mouse jumping, display anomalies, etc. The monitors listed should work however, it seems you need two adapters:

You could just hook your samsung DVI to DVI, then use the MDP to VGA for the Dell, however make sure to read the reviews carefully, as MDP to VGA (and MDP to DVI for that matter) hasn't had a really great track record according to a lot of people.

HT2845 Mac Pro and bluetooth compatibility

I have a Mac Pro that has OS Lion installed, but bluetooth doesn't seem to be available on the computer. I am trying to connect a Magic Mouse. What is the best way to do so? Is the USB-bluetooth method the easiest and cheapest?

I installed the most recent patches a few days ago. Shortly after, the Might Mouse and the wireless Apple keyboard started dropping out, as often as 10 times a day. Turning bluetooth off and on appears to clear the problem temporarily. Fortunately, with the trackpad and the MBP's keyboard you can take quick action without resorting to a plug-in mouse and keyboard.
Otherwise, the MBP appears to be relatively stable, but not the 100% I had become accustomed to with older macs. I find, for example, that occasionally the machine can be cranky when waking from sleep. The bluetooth problem is right at the surface and quite annoying. It's not at all obvious what's triggering it.

Mac pro graphics card compatibility

I have a 2008 mac pro works wonderful but the graphics card has recently burned out.
I need to replace it but I want something more modern.
What kinds of graphics cards are compatible with this model of mac pro.
Preferably not something that has a price tag less than the computer.

WD1001FALS and 3.0ghz Mac Pro 8 Core Compatibility Questions

Hi all,
This is my first post, I think, in the three years I've been a member, so, please excuse my lack of knowledge of these forums.
I've searched this particular forum for info on how well WD1001FALS drives work on a Mac that should be here Monday and I could not find any references. I can get a couple of these drives from a friend at a really nice price.
First, are they compatible? If so, does Spread Spectrum Clocking (SSC) work on a Mac?
Second, will they work together as a software RAID mirror, and do you think this is necessary since I am using Time Machine for an external backup? If so, what would any of you set the chunk size to for photo editing in Photoshop and Aperture 2.0 among other photo apps? 64k perhaps, or larger? I'll be running 10gigs of ram if that needs to be known for any answers to any of my questions.
I apologize for all the questions, especially in a first post but, I need to give an answer to my friend by Saturday. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

The Mac Pro, unlike the older G5s, couldn't care less about SSC, well it does in that it supports SATA specifications fully.
I didn't know the WD Black series were out and available. Let us know how they do. I would also invest in a fast boot drive along with those. Would be nice to see WD 1TB added to Barefeats 1TB comparison http://www.barefeats.com/hard94.html
Just don't think you want or need mirror, maybe stripe for performance. I would never be without just TimeMachine for backups, or one method. I would leave the block size to default unless working with video.
You can partition your drive and have an outer partition on each and then combine those into a scratch stripped RAID for Photoshop and then use the rest for data or a 2nd RAID, up to 3 such sets. If you want a more flexible RAID or mirror, I would look into SoftRAID

PCI Video Interface Card for Mac Pro/FCP

Could someone please recommend a PCI Video Interface card for my Mac Pro? I'm looking for something that will capture in Beta SP, as well as support HD-SDI (bnc connector) -- does such a card exist?

Problems on new mac pro with Blackmagick DaVinci Resolve. Others have found the same problems?

The purchase of the new mac (D700x2, 32Mb RAM, 1TB SSD) cost me a lot of money.
It was intended for use with Adobe Premiere, After effects, Photoshop, and Da Vinci Resolve Blackmagic 10.
I unwisely upgraded to Mac OS 10.9.3 (hoping that with the new drivers the machine would improve its poor performance).
A glaring error.
At the time the workstation is just a pretty ornament because for my job (which I do for more than 20 years old) is completely unusable.
The machine crashes constantly in DaVinci Resolve.
All of this is putting a strain on my patience and the patience of my clients.
I hope that Apple is aware of the situation clearly enough, and assume that for once his responsibilities working to resolve as quickly as possible these unacceptable problems.
I've always been an Apple customer and "friend" of Apple but this situation is not acceptable.
Before creating advertising slogans you should create products able to function.
What is the point of all banchmarks DaVinci Resolve ppoi if the machine is not able to run it for a professional use?

Blue Ray Disk drive compatibility with DVD S Pro, Mac Pro

Ok, I'll make this an official question, where might I find info on BDR drive compatibility with DVD S Pro, Mac Pro, etc? I'm a little surprised that there doesn't seem to be much info available.
I can always use my Pioneer BDR-202 with a windows box, I have several, but I'm trying to get AWAY from them.
Any thoughts, links, etc. welcome, thanks

Blu-ray offers a level of interacivity that is not possible with DVDs, so it isn't just an different drive that you are getting with Blu-ray. Seeing how Apple didn't upgrade DVD SP with the new FCP Suite 2, it is reasonable to assume they are working on a separate Blu-Ray Studio Pro, that is going to be completely different than DVD SP. Adobe Encore's support for Blu-Ray is extremely buggy, so obviously moving from DVD programming to Blu-Ray programming isn't just a simple tweak to the code.
Apple doesn't pre-announce software they are working on so this is all guess work, but it is reasonable to assume that they are working on a Blu-Ray programming application. Be patient. Do you really have the money to burn on the bleeding edge of new technology? A single Blu-Ray burnable disc sells for $20. Two months ago the exact same disc sold for $45. Prices will continue to fall as things stablize.

Capture willl not work with FCP 5.1.1 installed on Mac Pro 2.66.

I need some help, Please!
Hello, I have just installed my crossover copy of Final Cut Studio 5.1 in a new Mac Pro.
The only problem that I have encountered is with capture. After running for
several seconds capture stops and the spinning beach ball makes its entrance.
After several minutes of spinning the capture moves on for a few more
frames. Again the beach ball will spin for several more minutes. This continues until I click on
STOP at which point the spinning beach ball takes over the machine and will
not give me back control until I turn off my transport/deck. I have reinstalled
only FCP 5.1(not the other apps. from FCS) with no luck. I didn't uninstall the previous copy. No improvement.
All my settings are the same as recommended in Easy Set Up.
The tape and deck work fine on a similar machine with similar software.
I have also found a similar problem with the installed copy of iMovie.
This software was used on a G5 before moving it over to Mac Pro with out
problems. I am at a complete loss. I hope you can embarrass me with a
simple solution.

avidvid, thank you for you advice. I did check the system profiler and the device is
recognized, but to no avail. In fact it is getting worse. When I initiate log and
capture I can hear the transport working. It is moving all the time even though
the capture window is now only showing the color bars. The "beach ball" is now
constantly whirling and will only stop when the "deck" is turned of at the source.
I am worried that I have messed up the reinstall. I am really not sure how much
"stuff" I must remove from the system, or whether to reinstall the entire suite.

.. and by the way, the jump from FCP 6.0.3 to FCP 7.0 (or higher) isn't an "update" It's a full version "upgrade" that has to be done using the install discs (or disc images).

FCP 5 on Mac Pro 2.66 GHz Dual-Core - project won't open

I feel SICK. I bought this Mac Pro and a new monitor, transferred all my data from my iMac and tried to open my FCP 5 project and what opened was a "new" project screen... yet there was a tab with my project's name on it as if it should have been there. Can I run my fcp 5 on this new Mac Pro?

I was afraid of that. However, in the the last 15 minutes, I opened another project and that opened, seemed to play correctly, so I'm confused. Is 5.0 not for Intel because of speed? Or actual editing capabilities? (Just need an education on that). So when I get FCP 2, once I've opened the program, can it read FPC 5.0 projects? And will I be able to convert the 5.0 projects into the FCP 2?
Good to know about the gigs. We ordered 4 the other day, so we should have 5 total since 1 came with the computer. Thanks for your guidance.
