Mac Pro firmware update (AUG.'07) causes fan spinning@ loud volume-
Just ran the Mac Pro firmware updater from software update and now the fan is on extremeley loudly as soon as I boot-up and *does not quiet down at all* during operation. Also, there is no power light on the front of the Mac Pro tower. I read somewhere that this was supposed to improve fan performance but is has worsened it dramatically.
I read that this firmware update is the first of its kind to not require the removal of RAID disks… but I have a RAID disk so it gets me wondering that maybe it's related…?
Mac Pro 2 X 3GHz Dual-Core running 10.9.10
Any ideas? I have tried resetting the PRAM, but nothing changed. Also, I cannot shutdown consisstenly, I have to power-down with a hard reset.
Thanks,
-Phil
A. You should apply it from a non-RAID.
B. You might want to reset the SMC.
*Note: This update requires a Macintosh-formatted disk or*
*partition. If you are starting up using a RAID (Redundant Array of*
*Independent Disks) subsystem, you must connect a Macintosh-formatted*
*storage device to apply this update.*
Some USB and FireWire devices may prevent firmware updates from
installing correctly. If you are having trouble installing an update
try disconnecting non-essential devices and use only an Apple keyboard,
mouse, and display.
http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/macprosmcfirmwareupdate11.html
... and you read that it doesn't matter if the BOOT volume is a RAID?
There was/are some mis-statements out there. Booting from a RAID is not supported. Removing a RAID array was never an issue (non-boot volumes).
And me, I always avoid installing using Software Update and go to Apple Downloads.

Mac Pro Firmware update -- can't boot, dead in water
Hi all,
Just downloaded the newest firmware update. Shutdown, held in the power button, saw the flashes, heard the firmware beep, let power button go. Machine re-booted, and I saw the firmware progress bar on the screen. Running a little behind schedule, I left the room to grab some things for work. 45-60 seconds later, I come back and my new 23" ACD appears to be in sleep mode; Mac Pro power light is on. Can't seem to wake it up, so I hold down power button, then reboot.
The firmware update must've failed, because now my machine will not boot. It starts, I get the light gray screen but never see the Apple... the monitor simply goes black.
I've tried numerous times to re-do the firmware update to no avail... light flashes, hear the beep, see a gray screen, then monitor goes dark.
I've downloaded the firmware restoration CD, burned it, but the Mac never seems to recognize the firmware CD in the drive when trying to do an update.
This is not a RAID system. I did have a second SATA drive in the MP at the time fo the first update, but I've since removed it. Also hit the hardware switch on the mobo, and that hasn't helped either.
Any advice appreciated. I hate to say it, but I have a $4000 paperweight under my desk right now. :/
PS --
2GB Ram, all Apple
ATI 1900If you do in fact have a
Firmware Restoration CD then use the instructions
from here…
http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/firmwarerestora

… to get going with that CD.
Did that with no luck.
Well, let me back up a moment -- the restoration CD was in the drive at the time I held in the power button, 3 flash/beep sequence, etc.
Where I deviated is attempting to insert the CD after the 3 flash/beep... I've had a difficult time getting the CD tray to eject during startup. I'll try again tonight to eject the tray after the 3 flash/beep, then insert CD.
I'm still looking for a photo online of where the SMC is located (no luck so far). -
When I power up my 2008 Mac Pro I get the "welcome chime", fan comes on, a light comes on on my Apple moniter and then nothing - black screen. What,s going on?
what you describe as the "welcome chime" is the indicator that your Mac has passed the Power-On Self test, and if a suitable source of software can be found, booting is likely.
If the screen stays dark, the most likely explanation is a graphics card failure. But it could also be caused by a backlight failure in the LCD, so be sure you try shining a bright light at the screen to be check whether the picture is there, but just not illuminated.
Graphics card failure will end the boot-up process in some cases, and not have an impact in others. Two external indications you can use when your display is not working are: The Caps Lock key, which is under the control of Mac OS X, and the Control-Eject dialog box shown below. Note that the default is Shutdown, so a Mac that shuts down in response to Control-Eject followed by Return is working fine. -
Macbook Pro Firmware update 1.5.1
So every single time I have done a software update I have gotten this Macbook Pro Firmware update. I always have the firmware update checked and it never goes away.
My current firmware boot version is: MBP31.0070.B02
the software update says this:
This update fixes several issues to improve the stability of MacBook Pro computers.
After the firmware is successfully applied to your Mac, your Boot ROM Version will be:
MBP21.00A5.B08 or MBP31.0070.B07
So the firmware never gets installed. Whats up with this? Please excuse me if this seems a stupid question but I am a little confused by the various Apple software upgrades, I take the automatic upgrades as and when I receive notification. It is the firmware upgrades I do not fully understand, am I correct in assuming that this is a manual upgrade by the computer owner ? I own a 1st generation MBP the Boot rom ? version I have is MBP11.0055.B08, I would like to know if the new version 1.5.1 is suitable or a requirement for my machine or only for more modern versions of the MBP ?

MacBook Pro firmware update after erase & install
Hi,
I just tried to update from 10.4.10 to 10.4.11 with software update last night and got the error message a lot of people have been experiencing, then, got stuck at the apple logo with the never-ending spinning wheel... well... tried repairing disk, permissions, everything, but didn't work...
Now I reinstalled OS X with the dvd that came with my pro (10.4.6) and I noticed that when I run softwarte update, a specific MacBook Pro firmware update and some battery update didn't show up, does that mean I already have it? because it is firmware, the installation of OS X didn't erase it?
And to all those out there stuck at the boot screen, I'm trying the manual combo update (downloading from apple.com) and will tell if this works (thank god I backed up everything!)Good Morning,
To answer your firmware question, yes. Once applied a firmware update is burned into the chip on the device being updated and is not subject to being removed with an operating system, the only way to change that firmware is to update it with something else.
You should be fine that they aren't showing up because, as you said, you already have them.

So im about to buy a mac pro, I just need help cause im not sure if it's worth paying more for instance, a hi-res screen compared to the stock screen, and will i really miss the .2 ghz and the upgraded video card if I get the 2.0 ghz mbp?

It appears the 15" 2.2 ghz isn't worth spending $400 more for, but you get the 1GB Radeon 6750M that has four times the VRAM than the 15" 2.0Ghz model and about 167% more performance. High settings on all current games with over 50 fps.
If your not into 3D gaming or just light weight, then the 2.0 Ghz (last years performance) will suffice on low-medium settings at about 30 fps.
The 13" is rather poor as it has integrated graphics. 30 fps on only some games.
The high res screen is a excellent choice and the anti-glare is great for viewing just about anywhere.
No messy films to replace at $30-$40 a pop.
A lot of people bring the glossy screens back once they hear about the anti-glare.
http://www.pcpro.co.uk/blogs/2011/05/23/glossy-vs-matte-screens-why-the-pc-indus trys-out-of-touch/
Here's my 17"
In my opinion the extra $400 for another 2-3 years of use out of the computer is worth it.
Quad cores are more than enough for most uses for most people for many years, it's just a slow card is going to make the machine feel slow in rendering graphics in the future. -
SUS no likey Mac Pro Audio Update?
Has anyone noticed that some of their Software Update Server installations are declining to show the recent (2/11) Mac Pro Audio Update? I have a few 10.5.8 servers that have downloaded it, as they have the workaround for adding 10.6 updates described in this forum, but a couple have not, and 3 different 10.6.2 servers have not. I see an error message on one 10.6.2 server as:
Cannot process catalog item for product 061-7871 due to missing/malformed data.
That particular "product" is indeed the Mac Pro Audio Update. Think Apple has an issue w/ their Software Update servers? Anyone else seeing this?
Thx,
Fred
P.S. Am I the only one who wishes there was a way for a post to show up in both 10.5 & 10.6 server forums??About to mark this as "answered" (sort of), as I believe this Mac Pro Audio Update is no longer necessary (or available) now that we have the 10.6.3 update. My hacked 10.5.8 SUS machines no longer show this update. However, ironically enough, the 10.6.3 SUS apparently doesn't even show the 10.6.3 updates, so I guess in a way, this is kinda still an issue...LOL. Anybody wanna confirm or deny that this issue is closed (sort of!)?
Thx,

MDD 1.25 GHz DP doesn't start - No Powerbutton lit - Fan spins loudly
Hi,
I have an 1.25 GHz DP MDD which doesn't start. When I release the power button, the light goes off again but the machine stays on. After half a minute or so the fan starts spinning loudly.
Anyone any ideas what the problem might be? Thanks in advancedaakaa6 wrote:
Actually, I'm new to the Apple forums, but saw an entry about "fans spinning loudly" and had a simple MDD question for the experts. Where is the best place to find quiet fans for my MDD dual 867? Most of the ones I find in the right size are three and four pin on the smaller (60mm) fan, and I don't know enough about the specs to know if there is an adapter, cut and splice, or what? I'm sure this is a no-brainer for somebody out there. Any help would be appreciated.
Actually, you probably would have wanted to posted this as a new thread, since it's a slightly different topic. But anyway...
Which fans? 120mm case fan, 60mm PSU fans, 80mm optical fan? All the above? If you have the "Delta kit", i.e. Delta fans everywhere, I can understand why.
If you replace any of them, you do want to make sure you get fans with similar specs. This blog entry has a really long list of comments. But there are jewels in there. Any fan you replace you'll want to get them with similar specifications, or at least have someone else give you details.
From that blog and similar post on xlr8yourmac, it looks like there are some Thermaltakes that are nice PSU replacements -- there are some links to online stores. There's a SilentX 120mm case fan mentioned that a lot of people have used.
Again, it's long as you go through the comments, but there are some links in there. -
Mac Pro optical drive hardware is causing Leopard to hang on startup
I had installed Leopard on a new internal drive with a clean install. However, everytime I tried to boot, it hanged on the blue screen or took me to the Leopard desktop where it froze.
I called Apple and through the process of elimination they asked to to disconnect my two optical drives...the first is a Sony NEC Optiarc DVD RS AD-7170A that came with the computer. The second is a Pioneer DVD-RW DVR-112. After separating the ribbon cable that connects both drives, I was able to successfully boot into Leopard with no problems. That said, Apple regarded my issue as now a hardware issue rather than a software issue...and said I should take the Mac Pro into the local store for repair.
I've tested each of the optical drives individually to see if by hooking them up one by one to see if one will allow the system to boot. But neither one allows me to boot into Leopard successfully. Apple also says that the ribbon cable could also be a possible reason as well.
Before I make the trek to the store, does anyone out there have any similar stories to share with their Mac Pro? I have NOT updated to the latest firmware for the Mac Pro which is EFI 1.2 and I may try that as a last resort. Also, I tried to find any Superdrive firmware updates for the Mac Pro's Sony Optiarc drive on Apple's website, but could not locate any.
Let me know if anyone out there has some info to share on this.
Thanks,
JohnThanks for the reply, but I took it to the apple store today and they ran a full diagnostic test on it. It turns out it really wasn't the optical drive. There was a bad sensor on the logic board causing the power supply fan to run at full blast. Looks like im gonna have to wait even longer to be able to enjoy my mac pro:(

5770 and 5870 in Mac Pro 2009 - noisy PCIe expansion bay fan
I replaced the Geforce GT120 by the ATI radeon 5770 in my Mac Pro Quad 2.66 Nehalem. I had severe trouble with the speed of the fan of the PCI-e expansion bay: 2000 RPM and really noisy. After 30-60 minutes it slowed down and became silent, but upon reboot the noise and the high speed were there again.
I have sent the 5770 back to Apple. I am considering to try the 5870, but I am afraid I will be in trouble again.
With the GT 120, the fan speed is only 800 RPM and the Mac is silent. The ATI Radeon cards require one or two power cables connecting to the logic board.
Could that be the cause of the problems or was the 5770 a bad card? Or is it the logic board. I ran the Apple Hardware Test. everything was OK.
I checked it with Techtool Pro and there were no problems found.
Any help would be much appreciated. I have zapped the PRAM and reset the SMC without result.
Kind regards and thanks of reading. If it is any consolation I have the same machine and installed the Radeon 5770 and have intermittent high expansion bay fan speeds (1400-2400rpm). I just checked this board today because it seems more noisy today than in a while and the ambient air is listed as 78 degrees F. The card has it's own fan and exhaust slots in the back of the card and the air from them is warm but not what I would consider hot. I had had two video cards and a eSATA card installed and never had a problem. Now with just this card and the eSATA it exists. I'm betting if I call Apple about it they will tell me it's only listed on their site as compatible with the 2010 Mac Pros, so, for now I will live with it.

Mac mini EFI Firmware update 1.1 is released! Any problems with it?
Mac mini (Early 2006) Mac OS X (10.4.7) Intel Core Duo T2300 (1.66 GHz)I wonder how wide spread this is?
based on the relatively few postings here, I'd say issues with the firmware update aren't widespread. That doesn't mean that some users aren't having issues as clearly some are, but typically if there's a widespread problem, these Discussions reverberate around it for days.
1. I've modified my mini buy installing more ram and
a faster / larger hard drive. I assume if I need to
send it back I am going to have to undo all that?
Ideas?
Not so much with the memory, as long as it's good, but certainly as far as the hard drive is concerned, Apple would likely advise you that your warranty was void if they see an indication you have replaced the original drive with one that is not supported for this product.
2. I do not have support for this mini, as this was
caused by one of their updates do you think I am
going to have a problem?
I think you will have a problem with warranty support if Apple were to detect anything that to them appears to have damaged or compromised the system. Opening the system is not in itself a problem, but if any action you take once having done so then causes problems, they can decline to provide warranty support. In this situation, they might, for example, claim that your replacement of the hard drive was responsible, or complicit, in the failure of the system after the update was applied. That isn't to say they WILL say that, but they COULD. -
New 2009 Mac Pro, Software Update never finishes (finds no updates/result)
I have a brand new 8-core Mac Pro (new 2009 Nehalem-based model). The configuration is stock, 2.26GHz CPUs and 6GB of RAM. Bought this at the Apple Store yesterday. It is fresh out of the box; I have not even installed anything yet.
When I run Software Update, the "Checking for new software..." sheet appears, and the progress bar gets about 10% done, and then it just hangs there. For hours, so I assume infinitely.
The Software Update program is not crashed--you can still pull down the menus, and if you click Cancel, it will. It just never finds any updates. Nor does it finish the process and tell me my system is up to date.
I tried it on the command line too, and it hangs in the same way:
*IT-PC-MACPRO-1:~ mason$ softwareupdate --list*
*Software Update Tool*
*Copyright 2002-2007 Apple*
...also apparently forever.
Other than this, I haven't seen any problems with it in one day of use. This obviously seems like a software/configuration problem, not a hardware problem but still... not the best out-of-the-box experience. I am hoping this turns out to be a known issue with a simple fix. But has anybody else seen this issue?
The one thing I did try was moving the Mac to an entirely different network (from home to office). Other Macs here don't have any problem, just this one.
Clues appreciated.Hi, thanks for the reply.
1) I found updating worked as expected if I created a another admin account, and used that to run Software Update. However, Software Update still would hang infinitely if I ran it using my main account (again, a fresh account created by unboxing the Mac and doing the first-use interview wizard thing).
2) Being curious, I tried removing each file you suggested independently, and trying Software Update (without restarting). None had an effect until I removed the ~/Library/Caches/com.apple.SoftwareUpdate
After moving this folder aside, and launching Software Update again, it worked normally (no reboot required).
So that's some data, posted for posterity. I saved the corrupt cache file that seems to have caused the problem, so I'll file a bug report with Apple if I have time. -
Mac Pro with updated OSX 10.8.2 freezes no matter what.
After installing OS X 10.8.2 my Mac Pro with 32 Gb Ram freezes within 30 minutes invariably. Tried disconnecting all of the peripherals, unloaded Parallels 8, did a clean reload, quit all applications, nothing seems to make a difference. Would appreciate any additional ideas.
I'm having the same issue. Here's my log file. I hope you can determine from this, Thanks in advance if you can help out.

Mac Pro - Newly Updated to Leopard - No Longer Boots
I upgraded my Mac Pro to Leopard yesterday and everything appeared to go smoothly. I was experiencing issues with left mouse clicks not registering but after running Software Update and getting the latest updates I was able to click again.
I tried to wake the Mac from sleep this morning and it refused. I reset and it will not boot.
As it's a Sunday, Apple Care are closed so here's what I've tried so far:
1. Safe Mode: it won't enter into safe mode.
2. Resetting PRAM: done
3. Single user mode - fsck: done and no issues
4. Disk Utility from DVD: done and no issues
5. Verbose Mode: Hangs
6. Reinstall Leopard: I chose archive and install and it tells me there are files missing on Mackintosh HD so the installation is cancelled.
I have a bootable clone, via Super Duper, of Tiger before I upgraded, so I was considering trying the erase and install option with Leopard but I'm not exactly sure how I would get all my data back in Leopard.
Getting increasing frustrated as I desperately need access to my applications and data. I would be very grateful if anyone would be kind enough to offer any suggestions.I've had another thought. I was playing around with folder and screen sharing yesterday and at one point I could not access Mackintosh HD because I had insufficient privileges.
I managed to get it working again but having just checked the log from when I tried to archive and install Leopard earlier today I found this on the last line:
Failed to open databse on '/Volumes/Mackintosh HD' , Error 14, 13, Permission denied.
Please excuse my ignorance but could I have somehow simply locked myself out?
