Mac Pro goes to sleep and wont wake up

Any idea how to stop the Mac from freezing up when it goes into sleep mode?
First the screen saver comes on and then after a way it goes into hibernation and then can't be woken.
It use to wake but suddenly decided not to. Nothing's changed.

Well, as you can see from the long discussion on Creative Cow, the XD Cam issue is complicated and seems to be a hardware issue with Mac Pros. Disconnecting the fibre channel card seemed to have worked for one person. I haven't got one of those as far as I know! But then my crashes aren't as constant as his and seem connected, in my mind, with the odd way FC garbles the aspect ratios of Ex 1 footage, especially if mixed with filters and other codecs on the same time line... but some people swear it's the hardware not the soft that's the problem.
Anyway, I've had the hardware... RAM, Disk issues etc... all triple checked out and can't find a problem.
But still Finder takes six seconds to find anything and I think that has caused some crashes.
It doesn't seem to like Soundtrack Pro at all! (You can find a mixed bag of experiences on that issue as well.) And Motion works a little bit too jittery for my liking.
It might be that there are several different flavours of mother board, some not as geared up to this software as others. That's my theory at the moment. The only way to check is to stick my hard drives into the machine of someone who says they don't have any problems.

  • My computer is going to sleep and wont wake up by touching keyboard or mouse. I have to use the power button

Can anybody help? My computer is going to sleep and I cant wake it(bit like a teenager) by using the mouse or keyboard. I have to use the power button. Any ideas?

Hmm, that support link doesn't like me.
Do you have the discs that came with the computer? If so, put Install Disc 1 into the combo drive and boot up while holding the C key. Does anything show up on the screen? Do you hear the fan running? When running from a CD or DVD, the fan usually runs at a fairly fast pace and should make some noise.
Keep in mind that you have a 1-year hardware warranty with any new or refurbished Mac, so if something has gone wrong, you should be able to have it replaced free of charge, unless the MacBook shows some form of damage.

  • Macbook Pro Randomly Goes to Sleep and Wont Wake Up

My Macbook Pro started having this problem a few months ago and it has gotten progressivly worse and worse. It will randomly go to sleep but I wont be able to wake it back up. The keys are lit up and the light on the front is pulsing, but no matter what I do it wont wake up. So I have to do a hard reset to turn it back on. This happens a few times a day so its pretty infuriating. I have read on other forums about people having this same problem but havent been able to find a solid solution.
Here is what kind of Macbook I have:

Can anyone help me? Thanks in advance!

Hey this was happening to me too! So i called apple care, i have a the Late 2011 Macbook Pro, and this is what they suggested:
    1. open system preferences
    2. open engery saver
    3. look at "Computer sleep" and move it over to a longer time period
for instance I had mine at 5 minutes so thats why it would go to sleep all the time
-now I set it to 25 minutes
    Hope that fixes your problems!

  • Mac pro goes to sleep and the error  log say "The smart launch will be terminated"

Several times in the last few days my Mac Pro early 2008 has locked up.  This occures when leave the machine and come back to it.  I see the screen is black and the only thing that I see after clicking the mouse and pressing keys on the keyboard, is the white outline of the curser that will move across the screen.  Nothing will bring the system back and my only option is to hold down the power button until the unit shuts down.
I checked the logs in the console and the error message that I see is:  mm/dd/yy 9:49:17.719 AM SmartLaunch[31448]: The SmartLaunch will be terminated.
Any clue where I should start looking?
    Steve Ornat

That is a great idea to check the memory temperture.  Do they have built in temperture senors and then is there a terminal command to run to check that?  Also how do I change the speed of the fans, again a terminal command?
I was mistaken, I bought 4- 4GB memory modules, with heatsinks. (8GB were tooooo expensive)  It should be good memory but certainly I wonder as this never happened before the new memory was added, 5 or 6 weeks ago.
    My memory config is:
    2 - 1 GB (orginal whe n I got the sytem)
2 - 2 GB added 1 year ago from OWC
    4 - 4 GB added 6 weeks ago from ??
Good suggetions about the hard drive.   I did add a new Seagate 3TB drive a year ago when I got this machine, and I use it for all my data stoage and tunes and pixs and only use the 250GB dirve of OS and apps.  I have not installed the OS and apps on the 3TB drive and that would be an easy thing to do.

  • Macbook pro goes to sleep doesn't wake up...noticed the light on the power cord not on...

My MacBook Pro goes to sleep and this time will not wake up. I hold the start button down for count of 10 without results. I noticed the light on my power cord isn't on...and I've jiggled the cord and plugged it into a working outlet. Help!

All Apple laptops will go to sleep when the battery gets low, during this sleep you will not be able to wake it up.  based on what you are saying, to me it sounds like the battery is low because your power supply failed.  I would recommend either barrowing power supply from a friend, or bring it to the apple store, that way you can test it with a good power supply, it that is the case, replace it.

  • MDD went to sleep and wont wake up!

twin g4 867 MDD went to sleep at its scheduled time (2AM) The next day it would not wake from sleep as far as i could tell. Unplugged it, plugged it back in and i get startup tones but no video feed. HD's and fans are spinning. anyone have any ideas? Monitor burnout? graphics card? (i have a a nvidia gforce ti) im running tiger with all the updates, and an apple 20in cinema display. THANKS!!!

Are you able to bootup on your install disk?
Try using Disk Utility to repair your startup disk (hard drive) as shown in Dr.Smokes Resolving Disk, Permission, and Cache Corruption.
    If it's a no wake from sleep issue, read on;
If your Mac happily goes to sleep but won't wake up--Hold down the power switch to force-reboot your machine and get it running again.
Don't worry-your Mac isn't narcoleptic. Its Open Firmware system or NVRAM (nonvolatile RAM) is likely corrupt, and your Mac can't remember how to wake up.
Restart your Mac and immediately hold down the Command-Option-O-F key combo until you see a somewhat intimidating command-line display that ends with the Open Fimware prompt. Type the following lines:
    reset-nvram
    press Return on keyboard
    set-defaults
    press Return
    reset-all
    press Return
Your Mac will reboot. Once it's running, put it back to sleep to test. If the problem recurs your Energy Saver preferences may be the culprit. Delete the com.apple.PowerManagement.plist file (go to Finder/Hard drive/Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration)--don't worry, your Mac will regenerate a new one--and then restart to see if that rights the wrong.
Still did'nt work? Might be time to call AppleCare or see an Apple Genius or a technician.
    Cheers!

  • MBP goes to sleep and only wakes up for a moment... then sleeps?

My MBP started doing this today. Open the display, it wakes up for 1 second, then it goes to sleep and the screen disappears...? I tried to reboot in safe mode but it does the same thing again. Cant get it to stay on for more than a moment... any tips?

What new features are you mentioning, specifically?
The bulk of advancements w/SL are under the hood it would seem.

  • Macbook Pro 15 inch goes to sleep and then wakes

The Macbook Pro 15 inch computer is going to sleep while in use and then wakes up. No magnetic items are close to it. It is the strangest thing. We will be using it then its screen goes black/to sleep and wakes up after a few seconds. I thought that maybe it was Opera that I had open so I shut that down. I opened and was using Safari then it repeated. I tried restarting but it made no difference. Any thoughts on this or ideas of how to fix this?

I would try a SMC reset.

  • Thunderbolt Display in Bootcamp: Wont 'wake' after comp goes to sleep, and wont respond to dim controls.

Hi, I am using a 2011 iMac and my thunderbolt display arrived today.
I use bootcamp (win7) and the display works fine on start up, 2 issues though:
    1. Keyboard brightness controls affect the main display but do not not change the thunderbolt display.
    2. After the computer goes to sleep, apon waking the thunderbolt display stays off.
    Any advice would be appreciated.
    Cheers!

Fixed in the next update  in what way?  So that the brightness buttons control both at the same time?  Don't hold your breath waiting for it.  This has been an issue with all the displays for a long time and I doubt this will happen.  The problem is that the screens can get out of sync (like if you enable the option to automatically adjust based on the room brightness) so that the brightness wouldn't be the same between them.  Who know, perhaps they will come up with this fix and allow them to sync properly.
I don't know of a Windows program but on OSX, I use ControllerMate to do this for me.  CM allows you to customize all your buttons to do different (or additional) things.  In my situation, I have the external keyboard attached to a 27" Cinema Display.  When I press the brightness keys on the external, OSX detects the keys and adjusts only the CD brightness.  However, CM is also monitoring the keys and when I use them, it emulates the same brightness keys being pressed on the laptop keyboard.  This allows me to control the brightness on both at the same time.  If needed, I can press the brightness keys on the laptop and adjust that screen seperately because I haven't programmed CM to monitor those keys.

  • My MacPro goes to sleep and never wakes up

Pretty much every time I leave my computer alone for the night, I have to do a hard reset in order to get back in... it never wakes back up when I press keys or click the mouse.  While I'm using it, it runs amazingly well.
This is a 2006 Mac Pro, in which I have stuffed a lot of solid componentry.  Recently I made two changes:
    1.  I plugged a third monitor into one of my two video cards.
    2.  I threw in 16gb of RAM that I grabbed from Ebay.
TechTools pro runs tests and tells me that everything is fine... obviously it's wrong.
I bought the computer off of craigslist, and it boots to a black screen with a bunch of white text... I don't know why.  I can't boot into Apple Hardware Test... I really can't boot into any of the recovery modes actually.  I'm stuck going directly into the operating system after the black screen does it's thing.
I would try to reset the PRAM and such, but holding things down during startup just doesn't work for me.
Here's the error report... it also includes a lot of the information about the hardware in the computer (thanks in advance for all of your help):

Try with half the RAM at a time.
Monitor the temps - Temperature Monitor - especially those FBDIMMs to be running below 70*C.
    Amazon has those for $25 (2 x 2GB for Mac Pro 1,1 667)
Your 5770 will support three displays.
Use SMCFanControl 2.4+ and set the default fan speed to 900 rpm, and set a couple more profiles for higher rpm just to see if that helps air flow and cooling and if your temps are normal.
I would also look at running w/o external devices. Like your RAID5. Until your system is stable.

  • She goes to sleep and never wakes up - among other things

I just installed SL and I seem to be having a myriad of problems:
    1) when she goes into sleep mode, i can't wake her up unless I restart the machine. All I get is the spinning beach ball.
    2) she is definitively NOT faster
    3) I don't see anything new or different anywhere on my system. I was really excited about the new podcast feature but I can't find it anywhere on my system
    4) I ran disk utility to do repair permissions, and that didn't fix anything. In fact, a few repairs couldn't be made.
I'm thinking that i should just just uninstall it - but i have no idea how to do that. Should I try to fix it or just I just do the uninstall and wait until the software updates come out?
    Thanks for any input!

What new features are you mentioning, specifically?
The bulk of advancements w/SL are under the hood it would seem.

  • Mac air goes into sleep won't wake

MacBook Air goes to sleep as normal, but won't wake up now.

A new mini is on the way & I'm researching UPS's. A question that I now have is -
The new mini will have 10.5 which will be nice, but I really want to put my old hard drive straight into the new unit so I can have my old computer back the way I like it. Right now I have my external drive with everything on it plugged into my wifes macbook, & I can access everything except my email. The old emails are there in the folders, but as numbered icons, & I can't find anything. With my business I often have to refer back to old emails, & right now it's really hard to. I have tried to import them into mail, but it says it doesn't recognize them.
If I do this, can I put the new backup discs in & load leopard onto the old hard drive without loosing my old information & setup? We are on a very slow dial-up here, so I've never been able to accept the automatic updates. I look forward your advice.

  • Mac Pro won't start and display has no signal?

My Mac Pro goes to sleep and won't start. The display doesn't have a signal. What is wrong?

After a few hours of trying to work things out...I've discovered its related to the ATI Radeon 2600 HD XT Card (dual cards and monitors). Once I remove one card from each machine the systems started but the monitors remained in what looks like suspended mode display "No signal".
Tried to download firmware update. My system wouldn't allow the installer to work. Apparently already have the firmware.
The Display icon shows only four choices for the monitors resolution. On my working systems there are at least 15 resolution settings. Where is the ATI Radeon software on the system. The About this Mac doesn't show any Graphics or Display information.

  • Lose printer after macbook pro goes to sleep

I have a wireless printer (Samsung CLX-3185FW) that I talk to through my time capsule/ariport.
After my computer (or any of the ones on the network) go to sleep, it can no longer see the wireless printer.  The happens whether the printer is in active/ready mode, or is asleep.
After the computer goes to sleep (and I wake it again, and it is connected to the wireless network), I can't print, wake the printer from sleep, or re-add the printer through preferences.
If I restart the printer, the computer can see it again.
There is no problem if using USB.
Given the printer is still connected to the airport, I am presuming it is a problem with some settings on my computer or time capsule.
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!

Just to confirm.. you can open the airport utilty.. can you still see the TC/airport? And the printer is still there?
Can you find the IP of the printer from the TC/airport? Wireless clients will be listed on the advanced log wireless clients page. Make sure the TC can still see it.
From the computer open a terminal and ping the printer name.. (this is where the problem is I think the computer has lost the printer name from the arp table). If the ping fails to respond, ping by the ip address. See if that gets things going. Tell me your results.
Also when you restart the printer.. and can print, in the terminal type arp -a and copy the output.. the printer should be identified on the network..
After a computer goes to sleep and wakes.. cannot find the printer.. type arp -a again in the terminal and see if the reference to the printer has gone.
    Tell me your results.

  • When I close the lid on my retina MacBook Pro with Thunderbolt and it goes to sleep, I cannot wake it without shutting it down and restarting it.  Called Apple tech and they did not have a solution.  Any ideas?
