Mac Pro, HDTV Hookup, Other input

This is just a general question about the operation of the display when connected to a HDTV. Just to start, I have no issues connecting to my LGTV. When I have my Mac Pro connected to the TV, via display-port to HDMI, the clamshell open, and a different input (i.e. my PS3) selected, the display continues to flash the blue screen. Is the computer cycling through the same process even when I have the clamshell closed. I have always just disconnected the cable to prevent the computer from performing any unwanted action, but seeing as I do not know what exactly is happening with the clamshell closed, I would just like to know if there is a way around having to disconnect the cable every time?

Did you check Utilities> Audio MIDI Setup?

Mac Pro no analog audio input

The analog audio input on my Mac Pro has stopped working. Audio output still OK; USB audio input works fine but nothing from analog audio input.
I know it's getting a signal as I can send the mixer output to a Zoom H4n and it records fine, but I need it to go directly into the computer for tutorial voiceovers. I've tried recording in Quicktime Player, Soundtrack Pro, Camtasia and Screenflow.
I get no volume indication in the System Preferences>Sound panel.
I opened Apple Midi Setup>analog input and I can adjust volume on the two channels but "Master" is stuck at zero. Could this be the problem?

See if a smc reset shakes it loose.
Just to be clear here. Are you inputting into a program and expect to hear it as well? If so, then unless the program itself has some kind of audio playthru to the speakers you need a app like LineIn to handle that function.

WiFi signals get stronger the closer the machine is to the router and the less interference/blocking of the signal like via walls with metal in them or of thick concrete.
Since the signal emanates outwards in a sphere, your supposed to place the wireless router in a central location in the building so it covers all areas.
The power of the router also has a affect, if your router is old or something not that powerful like a Airport Express, it doesn't have the ability to filter out other signals or enough punch to get through walls etc. or cover a large area as effectively.
If you buy/have a powerful router of newer make and have issues where there is metal in the walls or thick concrete, then you can buy something like OpenMesh and by using Ethernet cables from the back of the router, extend the WiFi signal into other rooms and areas past the blockage.

Mac Pro can access other Macs but those same Macs cannot access the Mac Pro

Hello.
I have a highly annoying problem that goes as follows:
My (home) network consists of:
- 1 Mac Pro (e2008 - 10.5.6)
- 1 iMac (2008 - 10.5.6)
- 1 MacMini (2004 - 10.4.??)
- 1 MacBook Air (2008 - 10.5.6)
The internet connection is alive and well with no drops not that it truely matters here.
The setup is as follows:
- Linksys AM300 in half bridge mode connects to the
- Apple Airport Extreme Base station from which 1 cat6 cable runs to the
- Mac Pro
The other Macs connected to the Airport Extreme wirelessly.
The Mac Pro has its network settings setup correctly (in fact it used to work fine but then just stopped working) and I have also disabled all network settings, rebooted and reapplied the settings to no effect.
To clarify:
I (Mac Pro) can connect to all Macs in the network but all those macs can see me but not connect to me. Connecting via the Finder simply says "Connection Failed" and if I open the "Connect to server.." and enter the IP address of the Mac Pro it results in an error/failed connection also.
Any ideas to fix this would be highly appreciated.
PS: As of now, 19/03/2009, I have all software updates installed on all macs in the network.

Place the files you want to transfer on the Desktop
Click on the Finder or desktop to swtich to Finder, then Go > Computer, then double click on the boot drive, then on the Users folder.
Open the target User folder and inside is a Public folder > Drop Box, just drag and drop in there and the permissions change so that user can use the file.

Help with the delivery of a Mac Pro (or any other product)

But i live in the United Arab Emirates, and there is no official agent for Mac here so that i could make a customized Mac Pro.
So how can I find a way to buy my customized Mac Pro from here and have it shipped to the UAE.

You can purchase the computer in the US and take local delivery. Then arrange for UPS or FedEx to ship the computer internationally provided they ship to the UAE. You will have to pay the shipping charges and probably any duty or other levies imposed by the UAE when the package arrives there.
If you are a US citizen residing in the UAE on a visitor's or work visa, then you may be able to make other import arrangements, but you would have to check with the UAE customs people to determine what those arrangements entail. You should also check with the US embassy as well or with your employer.

USB Drive not mounting on Mac Pro, mounts on other Macs?

I have a USB drive that mounts on just about every Mac (just about because I haven't tried on them all) in our studio. Intel & PPC, 10.5.6 and 10.4.11. But, when I try and mount it on my Mac Pro, it won't mount. The only difference (other than it being a Mac Pro) is that it's running 10.5.7 — though, I have an iMac at home running 10.5.7 and it mounts there no problem as well?
I've confirmed the USB ports working (all of them), but for some reason, this drive doesn't mount (can't see it in Disk Utility or other 3rd party drive utilities)?
Anyone have any suggestions?

Yea, I've already tried both of those things and neither have worked.
So weird. I've read a lot of reports on these boards about 10.5.7 and USB not playing well together, but the fat that I've been able to get it to mount on a 10.5.7 machine...?

Stock Mac Pro 2.66 Quad Nehalem + new memory

Probably this was covered but I can't find it. I'm waiting for my brand new Mac Pro 2.66 with the stock configuration of 3GB of memory. I know it's not enough because some of my projects use more (Logic Pro + Kontakt 3.5 and a Play library) and I know my current system has never went further than 3.7GB (according to iStat nano widget) though I have 8 gigs. So the first option is to buy just a 2GB module to have a total of 5GB in 4 slots (21+11). Or to buy the 2GB module and have 4GB (211) in 3 slots? I've read the DIMM replacement DIY pdf from apple and found that it's better to fill the first 3 slots and leave the 4th empty because it can decrise system speed. How much slower will the system be if filled 4 slots? Can I have one 2GB module and 2x1GB modules installed? Which way is best? Or perhaps I have to buy a 2x2GB pair and leave the 2 last slots empty?
I have to add, my G5 quad speed is enough for me and I'm upgrading not because of speed issue but because more and more developers abandon the PPC world.
So to cut a long story short: I need more RAM (total of 4GB or 5GB is enough). Can I mix different size modules (ie. 1GB and 2GB)? what system slowness can I expect when the 4th slot is filled?
I hope my thoughs are clar Any comment appreciated.

Thanks for your input! I've just bought 1GB for penny and will observe if it's ok for the moment with the total of 4GB. After installing all the apps and plugins (I guess it will take some days because I have some folders back from Logic 6 somewhere in the Library folder and from my experience I know they have to be in specific places because Logic or EXS will look for them) I will open my most demanding Logic sessions and see if the memory is enough. Unfortunately there is nothing like Apple Poland and I can't buy directly from Apple (even from their German or UK shop), this is ridiculous, but that's another story. I found a reliable supplier in German Ebay - PureMac and I most probably will buy from them if in the need.
BTW This Mac Pro is soooo silent comparing to my G5 quad! I have one of those fan equipped UPSs and it generates more noise than the Mac Pro!

Interfacing Video Camera to Mac Pro for Final Cut Express HD Use

I have a lot of Video8 tapes that were made on my Sony DCR-TRV310 that I want to move to my Mac Pro and edit with Final Cut Express HD. The Sony camera only has the three (R,Y,W) output ports and my Mac Pro only has firewire input ports. Does anyone know of a cord solution or do I have to use an additional interface. Thanks

Unfortunately there is no "cable solution" You will need an external interface. Something along the lines of an external tv tuner. Elgato Systems makes a few, i've had great success with the Hauppage WinTV PVR USB2 Tuner. This cost me about 150$ Canadian and is compatible with Mac's after a software download from the manufacturer's website.

MPC 1000 & Mac Pro

I have an MPC 1000. I'm not sure if you guys no what that is? It is basically a samper/drum machine. Anyways, how would i go about recording this into soundtrack pro. It's outputs are a L & R 1/4" Line out jack. Like on a guitar. And an spdif output. The Mac pro only has a 1/8" line in. I can't really find an adapter that has 2 1/4" Male jacks to 1 1/8" male jack. I think i could make one if one does not exist. What about the spdif output. The mac pro has a digital input. Is therer an adapter that goes from spdif to optical, like the one on the mac pro?
How would you go about recording from the mpc to the mac?

Adapters from dual 1/4" to stereo 1/8" exist, you can even find them at RadioShack. If you want a S/PDIF coaxial to optical adapater, check out M-Audio CO2.

Mac Pro has slowed to a crawl - Please Help Me!

For some time now my Wireless or Wired Internet connection using my Mac Pro has slowed to almost nothing. For example, This page took 5 mins to load and now Internet use has become unusable.
I feel its my Mac Pro because all other Apple Computer run very fast wirelessly. I have (2) New iMac's (1) Apple TV and (1) Apple iPhone. All stream and surf the Internet blazingly fast.
My Mac Pro is constantly being redirected to other sites (mostly **** related) and a huge amount of Pop ups (even though pop ads are disabled in Safari). All Internet browsers perform the same on my Mac Pro or ANYTHING Internet related including WoW, Software updates or even iTunes Music Down loads.
I really feel that in some way (which is shocking) I am infected with "something" that is making my computer crawl on the Internet. Redirection of websites is just now very aggravating.
I am looking at the (2) Original Disks that came inside the Mac Pro Box. I'm seriously considering wiping my system clean and starting from scratch.
I currently hold NOTHING on my Factory 320GB HD other than programs.
I have installed (2) 1TB drives and created a RAID slice thus creating a single HD icon on my desktop that reads 1.8TB. Thats is where all my Music, Photos, and Movies reside.
My question is....
When I wipe my system will that RAID be broken? Will I lose everything on those 2 drives or will using the restore CD's leave all that information in tact?
Please let me know before I proceed.

Your RAID won't be touched. But back it up today if you haven't yet!
I use Firefox for security with noscript and some other filters, but I also hardened the router firewall to manually block services, ports and add rules - both incoming and outgoing.
You might want to look at LittleSnitch or NetBarrier and do some logging.
I've seen/heard where older routers and modems were fine, but not with Mac Pro or with Intel Macs in general and needed to be replaced or firmware updated. Problems with the latest updates for Airport have been seen by some, and worth checking into - on forums, news sites or hit google.
And of course check what processes are getting loaded and run; manually delete caches, history, metadata, even the bookmarks cache.

There are issues with fake Flash updates; normal sites (like CNN) suffering from SQL-injection. Best to run with javascript off for now.
Might want to look into ClamXav and other malware protection. But I would switch and see how Firefox and Opera behave. And turn off java, script, and plug-ins while you consider your options and try to find out why.

PAINFULLY slow Mac Pro 2.66

About a week or so ago I bought an Apple refurb Mac Pro 2.66
It is replacing a Dual 1.8 G5 with 2GB of RAM. My plan was to "suffer" with 1GB of RAM in the Mac Pro for a while until RAM prices went down. At the same time I bought a MacBook 1.83/512MB to replace my iBook 1.33/512MB laptop.
Right to the point, the Mac Pro pages out of control, all the time. Even closing windows causes extreme paging. To put it into perspective, my Mac Pro pages significantly more than my old iBook that only had 512MB of RAM. It is so slow I can't even do work. I was going out of my mind. Then, I figured I'd boot the Mac Pro off of the MacBook and run all the disk utilities I could find just to make sure nothing was wrong. Oh I guess I should also say first that the MacBook is just as slow, although with 512 - 64 MB of RAM, it has an excuse at least. So I booted the Mac Pro off the MacBook over Firewire, and started running tests. All the tests were fine. The directory wasn't scrambled. The disk was barely fragmented, no volume problems at all, S.M.A.R.T. tests all passed. But then I noticed something. The machine was no longer paging. Booted off the MacBook's drive, it was acting like a machine with 1GB of ram. It has its slow moments but over all it was fine. Apps opened super fast. It was as fast as I thought the Mac Pro was going to be. So at this point I started to get suspicious of the hard drive. Despite passing all tests. So I googled it's model number and found a manufacturers spec sheet. The first thing I noticed was this quote:
"Super-quiet drive is almost inaudible. Difference between idle and seek can hardly be detected by human ear, making drive operation almost silent."
My drive spins up nice and quiet, but seeking is so loud, I can hear it across the room. So now I'm really starting so suspect something is wrong. Both computers have been so slow, I've barely been using them lately but I have much work to do.
--also as an out of order note, I do run Adobe software, but all the slowness observations happen even when running ONLY intel native apps. Running PPC stuff just makes it worse but its still painfully bad without them.
So hows this for a theory. I've been told that intel code is optimized more for fast execution likes larger amounts of ram, so a system short on ram feels the pinch more. That, plus the fact that 64MB is being used for video RAM, is making my MacBook legitimately slow. The Mac Pro on the other hand, has a hard drive problem which is causing super slow paging. So I'm hoping that once the drive is replaced, I'll be able to work on the machine normally, or almost normally.
To give you an idea of how bad the paging is: remember when we used system 7 and would click on a program, and stop everything, walk into the other room, and come back when the application was opened. Thats what I do now on a 1 GB machine. Even switching between apps can take a minute or two.

Unless you yourself did a full fresh clean install of the OS, that is the first thing to do.
Second, don't migrate any files except data to the Mac Pro. And definitely not PPC program files, install those, but don't use Migration Assistant.
It sounds like your system is just suffering from "molasses effect" of a poorly installed and updated system, and that someone used Migration Assistant on it.
2GB of RAM is nice, but if you are running heavy files or memory hungry, 4GB would be nice.
You may want to setup a boot drive, a scratch drive, and a data drive to help spread the work over multiple drives. Also, the OEM drives do tend to be slow and sluggish, and you want your boot drive to be your best, whether 300GB or 500GB best of class, or 10K Raptor.
Wipe the drive, zero-all, do a fresh system install and update, and I think you'll find it behaves. Clone the system before installing 3rd party so you have a known good system state and don't have to customize everything again.

New Mac Pro - some questions about setup and RAM

After debating between iMac and Mac Pro, I decided on a refurb SINGLE 2.8 quad-core Mac Pro.
Somewhere in these discussions (can't find it now) I thought I saw recommendations to zero out the hard drive and re-install the system when it arrives. Is this necessary?
Also, I plan to use the single processor savings to buy RAM. When I go to the Crucial site, they have a choice of RAM for 4-core or 8-core. Mine is only 4-core, but would I choose the 8-core option to get the correct RAM for 2008 models?
In general, when it comes to buying and installing RAM, should I follow the 8-core directions? Will having a single processor change anything to do with upgrades or expansion?

No, that really isn't necessary. If you were prepping a new bare drive that had never been used or you were installing OS X on a drive that had once been used for Windows, then zeroing the drive is quite appropriate.
All the Mac Pros use the same type of RAM. The Late 2008 models use the faster PC2-6400 800 MHz RAM, but the other specs are the same - ECC, Fully buffered, heat sink. The RAM and installation is the same regardless of cores.
RAM should be installed minimally in matched pairs, optimally in matched quads. The following illustrations show how it should be installed:

My Mac Pro Experience (coming from PowerBook)

Hey All, I recently bought Apple's new power horse, and I thought I'd share my initial experience using it.
A little background
For the last few years I've been using a PowerBook G4 as my primary computer. I was about to buy a PowerMac when Apple made the announcement that they were going Intel, so I decided to put off a new computer purchase until they came out with the Intel-based PowerMac. When they finally came out with the machine a couple weeks ago, at first I was going to wait a month or two, giving time for any first-rev issues to surface. But turns out that's a lot easier said than done--on Saturday, after Flash froze up on me for the 3rd time that day, I ran to the Apple Store to get my Mac Pro.
Usage
I got the standard configuration and have since added a 160gb HDD for Windows from NewEgg and a another gb of memory from Crucial. Looking forward the plan is to go up to 4gb of memory, get ATI's Radeon X1900 XT when the Mac edition comes out, and grab a 500gb backup HDD.
To migrate my data over, I decided not to use the Migration Assistant as I didn't want to move any preferences or system files for apps I've uninstalled, etc.. So instead I just hooked up an ethernet cable between the computers. First I moved my apps, then my email, then my iTunes libraray, then all other files in my Desktop, Documents, Music, Photos, and Sites. I was already using .Mac syncing for my Bookmarks, Calendars, Contacts and Keychains, so that part was easy-- just enabled syncing.
Coming from a PowerBook, this thing is ridiculously fast. All these little things that took several seconds to load on my PowerBook are now instantaneous (loading Dashboard widgets for the first time after boot, for example). I have not noticed a performance hit running non-universal apps under Rosetta, however before I got more memory, the system's memory usage would almost max out when I was using Photoshop, so that extra 1GB definitely makes a difference there. One thing that's exciting about this computer is knowing it's only going to get faster as more applications become universal, Mac OS X Leopard comes out and has better 64-bit support, and as I add more RAM.
It's also very quiet. The new Xeons don't run very hot, and with the aid of a heatsink that spans the entire width of the machine on top of it, the fans are barely audible. The loudest part about it is the hard drive.
Boot Camp installation was just as easy as all the articles say. Windows runs pretty well on it– it lasted a full hour before crashing! I installed a program called MacDrive (www.mediafour.com/products/macdrive6) that enables Windows to access Mac-formatted hard drives. One thing that's worth a mention about MacDrive is that you have the option of making those drives read-only, so if I get some crazy worm or virus or whatever, it won't stand a chance corrupting any of my important data on the OS X drive.
But the main reason I installed Windows was for the games. While I was sleeping I had Steam download and install Half-Life 2. This morning I opened it up to check the performance. It's not bad at all–-with a 1680x1050 resolution (native 20" Cinema Display res), the recommended video settings were as follows:
- model detail: high
- texture detail: high
- shader detail: high
- water detail: reflect world (of options: basic reflection, reflect world, reflect all)
- shadow dtail: high
- color correction - disabled
- antialiasing mode: none (of options: none, 2x, 4x, 8x)
- filtering mode: trilinear (of options: bilinear, trilinear, anisotropic 2x, 4x, 8x, 16x)
- wait for vertical sync: disabled
- high dynamic range - full
The high dynamic range capability is particularly exciting to me because my gaming pc crashed every time I tried playing The Lost Coast, Valve's high dynamic range demo level. So, not bad at all.
Annoyances
Big thing here is the lack of the wireless module. Unless I want to span a cable across my room, I need wireless internet. A temporary solution to this is I have my PowerBook sharing its wireless connection with the Mac Pro over ethernet.
Not all Mac applications work on it yet, due to the x86 64-bit architecture. So far the programs I have tried to run that won't include Parallels (basically a VirtualPC for Intel Macs), Cisco VPN Client, and MySQL Administrator. The iStat Pro widget is also acting up.
On the Windows side, there are several things Apple could improve on. The biggest one here is the Eject key-- it will only open, but not close, the cd tray. If you have two optical drives installed, it will open both of them together (whereas on OS X it opens/closes the top one, and ALT+Eject opens/closes the bottom one).
With the exception of these minor inconveniences (which probably won't even be around a month from now) my experience has been completely positive. The only time I've had any sort of trouble was when I tried accessing a mounted drive that was no longer physically connected, forcing me to relaunch Finder, but this is a well-known issue that has nothing to do with the specific machine.
If you're thinking about getting a Mac Pro, my advice is to go for it.

Bear in mind that this is a technical support forum where users get help for their technical issues rather than a "feel good about your purchase" forum.
As for the Mac Pro itself, from what I've seen it's a extremely stable system and relatively problem-free system. You might want to have a look in the MacBook forums for a comparison of the number of recurring issues. Only then will you appreciate how good the Mac Pro is.

Is it possible to have 2 4k and 2 regular monitors on a MAC Pro?

I want to have two 4k monitors and 2 regular monitors on a Mac Pro. I know the limit is six regular and 3 4k. But I am not sure of the mix and matching.
