Mac Pro Kernel Panic - can't restart
had kernel panic and shut down using the power button. Now I can't get it to start up again at all. Just the fan noise and a black screen and the power light flashes - help!

Leopard Disk made my Mac Pro Kernel Panic
I have used original OSX 10.5 Leopard Disk to repair my mac pro HD, but it made my Mac Pro Kernel Panic. It was strange that the Mac Pro install disk one can success enter install mode!
Although I have conducted RESET PRAM procedure, the Leopard disk still made the mac Kernel Panic.I would like to ask if you upgraded your graphics card and if so, that it might require a later OS version than the DVD.
Two, I never use the DVD to repair permissions (Apple warns users to not use the DVD to do so now with Leopard); or to repair disk drives.
You are better off setting up a bootable hard drive for emergencies; a bootable clone of your working system; and, TimeMachine, so you have more than just one backup set or method.
Kernel panics are caused by hardware otherwise, most often due to 3rd party devices and even cables, including Firewire or USB.

Help deciphering Mac Pro kernel panic report
Hi all,
my Mac Pro (early 2009, quad core 2.93GHz, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 285) has experienced some kernel panics with automated restarts (8 in total) over the past couple weeks. All panic logs show hardware errors of the "Read ECC" kind, though the affected cores vary (3x CPU 0, 2x CPU 2, 1x each CPU 4, 6 and 7). I am hoping that it's only one of the DIMMs gone bad (I was thinking about upgrading the RAM anyway), but I fear it might be the mem controller, one of the caches or the CPU itself.
There seem to be quite a few knowlegable people around, so can you please have a look at the panic log and give me a hint towards the culprit? Would be much appreciated.
Best regards, Armin

Eight additional check bits (called Syndrome bits) are stored with each word in RAM memory. When Read out, the data and the syndrome are used together to detect and correct errors.
Single-bit errors are corrected on-the-fly with essentially no slowdown is processing speed.
Uncorrectable errors such as most double-bit errors cause a Kernel panic by design, to halt the machine and keep errors from propagating into your data.
Your kernel panic does indeed show the characteristics of an uncorrectable RAM memory error. The likelihood that the problem is caused by any of the other failures you listed is vanishingly small.

Hi,
I am receiving frequent Kernel Panic's on my 2007 Mac Pro. This began happening sporatically when using Snow Leopard (10.6.x) and has continued after upgrading to Lion (10.7.4). They seem to be getting progressively worse and I was hoping that someone familar with Diagnostic Reports would be able to make some sense of the following...

Upon request, I can provide many others, if it will be helpful. I have already taken the following steps (and probably a few others) to no avail.
Apple Hardware Test - No Errors (x2)
Replace Hard Disk
Clean Install of Snow Leopard (and later – upgrade to Lion)
Disconnect all periphrials (except USB keyboard, Blutooth Magic Mouse and two DVI monitors)
TechTool Deluxe
Reseated RAM (Originally installed at the Apple Store)
After each of these, the problem has continued, leaving me to believe that it must be a hardware issue. Unfortunately, these logs are (mostly) greek to me. The only error that I've been able to consistently see are that the same MCA registers are report invalid in each log.
Thanks, in advance for any suggestions or guidance!
Best,
~JoeI've been having the same issues lately with my Mac Pro. And just like you, I can work on my computer for a few days thinking the problem is gone, and then all of a sudden I get another Kernel Panic. I had 2 just the other day within minutes of each other. Below is what one of them read. I can provide many others upon request as well. I also have taken multiple steps, same as Joe, and still the problem persists.

Mac Pro Kernel Panic while booted on install disk
I have a Mac Pro with 1 year and 2 weeks on the clock. No Apple Care.
Started getting intermittent Kernel Panics about 2 weeks ago, which are becoming a real problem now. Happening every time I use the machine.
I’m running 10.6.4 and just have the original ram etc.
Having searched here for related topics, I have been trying to troubleshoot the situation.
Was looking at recent software installs or likely culprits...
Ran the normal Apple Hardware Test and passed ok.
Ran an extended test and got this error: "4HDD/11/40000004:SATA(4,0)
Repaired all internal disks as far as possible, while started up on the installation disk, and when finished I got another Kernel Panic, while still running on the disk.
Can someone confirm if this means the issue if definitely hardware rather than software?
If so is it possible to tell which hard drive is at fault - ie. which Bay number corresponds to the SATA error above, if it is the hard drives at fault?
Need to get this fixed asap, so if anyone has any thoughts on how I should best proceed, that would be really appreciated. Thanks.
Here is the Report from the last Panic:

Message was edited by: kmahonHi experiencing simular issues
Initially I thought the error was related to too many different things on the machine, but have since done a clean install to 10.6 with FCP and CS4 only and the and the errors continue.
6 error-reporting banks referred to 6 of the ram chips, but i see that your report
states 9, ( you don't have 9 ram slots do you?)
Upgraded this of a volume disc so I don't have the hardware diagnostic for this machine on a disc, and would have to go back to the tiger hardware diagnostics which should not make a difference but I see on forums people claiming this is an error only with leopard and that their systems were fine under tiger. The ram has a life time warrantee (non apple) but I need to get it to fail a test other than this apple problem report.
The machine crashes are not software specific, I was hand writing with just a browser open and it requested that I would have to restart the machine. If would be easier to test any solution I I know that combo would crash the machine other than time.
I expect the next steps
are to reseat the ram
reset the p-ram

Hi all -
So my Mac Pro 1,1 has been having kernel panics intermittently and I don't think they are tied to any specific OS upgrade. I used to get a couple a year until a few months ago and now I am getting them more frequently and I can't repro them.
I've Googled incessantly the past several days looking for possible solutions and cannot come up with anything. Does the kernel crash log mean anything to anybody?

Mac OS X kernel generally does not do this. But you are not running Mac OS X kernel, you have made a large number of modifications to it:

The backtrace points to Disk I/O routines as the place where the problem was detected. I would be very suspicious of your third-party drives that require non-standard drivers. I have external drives, but none requires a Driver, and I certainly do not see your crashes.
If you want Apple to take your problem seriously, you will need to duplicate the failure with no non-Apple kernel extensions present. -
Final cut pro make Mac pro kernel panic with RAM from other manufacturers
hi all
if i installed RAM For mac Pro from 667MHz DDR2 fully buffered ECC RAM from other manufacturers
final cut pro (just final cut)
make the machine kernel panic messege
all programs working good (like adobe and other compositing program) but final cut freez the machine and kernel panic
the standard RAMs goodAhmed:
You can try visiting/searching the Expanding your Power Mac G5 forum. You'll find A LOT of help about RAM issues.
Any RAM brand must work but you maust be sure it follows the MAc specs. Some brand sites have good product locator by computer manufacturer/model (i.e. Kingston and Crucial). In fact there is no Apple branded RAM, they use a lot of different ones.
Inside FCP settings you'll find how to manage the memory that the program use, but that settings depends on the total quantity of memory you have installed, and you didn't post that information.

The Mac OS X kernel does not panic in this fashion. But you are not running the Mac OS X kernel, you have modified it with a lot of other stuff. If any of these is badly crafted or not completely up-to-date, that is likely to be the source of your troubles:

Hi, thanks for looking over my sudden Mac Pro problem. Recently, my Mac Pro Intel Xeon started to have continuous Kernel Panics, all during simultaneous programs running, but also with a common Mac torrent program running, Transmission. Keep in mind that I've ran Transmission before in the past and this problem just came up. I did some research and a lot of people were complaining about Transmission causing Macs to slow down, were causing kernel panics, etc.-
So, I opened up my Mac Pro, cleaned all the dust on and around the motherboard, reinserted the 8 GB of RAM I have (description below), ran a full defrag through iDefrag, zapped the PRAM and reset the PMU..but within a day, this morning, my Mac Pro had another Kernel Panic. Within this timeframe I refrained from using any torrent program and when the Kernel Panic occurred, I had Safari and iTunes open.
- Mac Pro: OS X 10.6.8, 2.66 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon
- 8 GB, 1066 MHz DDR3 from OWC ( Purchased in March 2010 )
- When the kernel panics first started appearing, I ran an Extended Apple Hardware Test (about 1 month ago), and this was the result:
4MEM/62/40000006
0x79c29e98
Pass #12
Below is the most recent Kernel Panic I got, this morning's. It would be great if someone who knows more about this would be able to help. Thanks!

Mac Pro Kernel Panic w/Ethernet
I have a Mac Pro hooked up to "Linksys 10/100 5 Port Workgroup Switch". Hooked up to this is a Macbook (off and on, I only connect the Macbook when transferring large files to get the 100base-T speed) and an Apple Airport Express set up as a WDS remote base station.
Not a complex setup and as far as the Mac Pro is concerned it just has an ethernet connection to my LAN.
However I've been noticing infrequent kernel panics on the Mac Pro after hooking up the Mac book to the Mac Pro and tranferring files via AFP. This weekend I reorganised my desk and probably switched ethernet cables around. Now the kernel panics are extremely frequent.
Looking at the panic.log I can confirm my suspicions about Ethernet causing the problem:
0x2514bf58 : 0x21c23b (0x380f5900 0x380f5900 0x44307c 0x1a1ec0) Backtrace continues...
Kernel loadable modules in backtrace (with dependencies):
com.apple.driver.AppleIntel8254XEthernet(1.1.4a5)@0x3c5a9000
dependency: com.apple.iokit.IONetworkingFamily(1.5.1)@0x3c4f8000
dependency: com.apple.iokit.IOPCIFamily(2.1)@0x3527c000
com.apple.iokit.IONetworkingFamily(1.5.1)@0x3c4f8000
I'm going to replace the ethernet cables ASAP, it could be bad cables are upsetting the Mac Pro (but I'd expect packet loss - NOT kernel panics).
Is anyone else seeing this or anything like it?
Mac Pro Mac OS X (10.4.8)Well you may have data corruption at the driver level. Backup your data, and then try running the Intel 10.4.8 combo update. Sometimes that helps overwriting the existing software and fixing issues. If not, you may need to repair the directory using my FAQ* as guidance:

Early 2009 Mac Pro - Kernel Panic help please
I'd really appreciate some help troubleshooting KPs, please.
My machine is a Mac Pro early 2009, 16GB Ram, 2x30" Apple Cinema Displays, secondary display connected via mini display port adaptor.
I'm getting a KP every couple of days and the frequency seems to be increasing.
I think the Panic logs point to internet access as being the source of the problem. In the log that I've posted, an app called Radium is mentioned in the "
BSD process name corresponding to current thread" - Radium is an internet radio app and I was getting KPs before I installed it.
Previous panic logs have mentioned Chrome in place of Radium.
In the "unloaded kexts" com.apple.driver.AppleIntel8254XEthernet makes me this this is possibly internet related.
I have tried using ethernet port B instead of A in case port A was faulty, but the panics still happen. Maybe I could try connecting over wifi next.
I've booted into single user mode (64 bit kernel by holding the 6 and 4 keys during boot) and ran memtest overnight for 5 loops - all Ram checks out fine.
I've zapped PRAM and checked and reseated all RAM, HDs and GPU. Carefully cleaned all internal components of dust.
Any help would be very gratefully received, thanks in advance for any ideas.

Mac OS X: How to log a kernel panic
There is nothing obviously wrong with the stuff you posted so far, and the two seem to have happened in about the smae place. That increase the risk you have some damage to Mac OS X, and may benefit from a re-Install. -
QUadcore Mac pro kernel panic.
I have a Mac Pro tower. Quad core. 8Gb RAM. Have Leopard installed. Get a kernel panic on startup. Tried checking RAM, HD problems, rest PRAM, startup using x, or option or spacebar......nothing. Always get kernel panic immediately. Cannot boot up with external boot disk.
Help???.
LukeTry starting up using Shift, which does a minor Disk Repair and then boots up with minimal extensions.
If no success there, boot from the Installer/Utilities DVD, but do not Install. Answer only the "What Language" question and wait a moment for the MenuBar to be drawn. Select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu and select your Hard Drive, look at its status, then REPAIR.
"A Mac that cannot boot from an appropriate Installer/Utilities DVD has a Hardware problem." -
Mac Pro kernel panic, RAM does not seem to be problem
My Mac Pro (late 2006) now has kernel panics at startup. Problem first happened while computer was in sleep mode, a second kernel panic happened about 10-15 minutes after reboot the first time. Now it happens at startup every time. Zapped PRAM multiple times to no effect. Tested original 10.4 install disk, as well as 10.5 and 10.6 upgrade disks with all external connections removed and from a cold boot. The 10.4 disk causes the kernel panic every time. The 10.5 and 10.6 disks do too, if the C or D key is depressed. The upgrade disks will hang in a gray screen (10.6) or pale blue screen (10.5) with no keys depressed--computer keeps running but fails to boot. Also tested the RAM (4 X 512 MB) in different combinations of one pair in the top riser board (and switched risers, and removed lower board completely). All resulted in kernel panics. Next option?
To anyone finding this thread in the future looking for help on a similar problem, the CNet forums Mac section gave me the correct advise: replace the video card. The stock GeForce 7300 was causing the kernel panics. I replaced it with a Radeon HD 3870, from eBay, and everything went back to normal operation. (I did also have to upgrade my OS for the new card to work properly.)
-
I've been having more kernel panics, they never seen to go away. Sometimes if gives me the kernel panics message, other times it'll just shut off without any message.
Here's the error log
