Mac Pro (Late 2013) - 64GB RAM Upgrade

Anyone have any recomendations on third party brand for a 64GB RAM upgrade.
Apple RAM costs approx £1000 GBP whereas Crucial is approx £645 GBP, OWC is similar to crucial if I import from the US but I'm not sure if their ram are Registered or unbuffered.
The above is all cost based - should i be considering other factors such as performance and reliability?
Also when moving to Registered DIMMs i understand that the presence of the Registered DIMM controller on the DIMMs consumes one clock cycle is this a significant hit in performace over Unbuffered DIMMs?

I don't think so. Take a look at these DIMMs for reference (this Vendor show the specs of exactly what modules will be shipped to you). Even the 16GB DIMMs, while Registered, are still showing they perform at CL9 level (9 clocks to access) -- the same as unbuffered.

Just thought i would update you. I spoke to DMS Technical Support and apparently that DMS CL9 Rating is a typo.  It should be CL13!

Check MacRumors for where and what to look for in buying an Apple device.

No you can't install Windows on an external device but you can once installed clone it to a Thunderbolt device.
    >Didn't think so either. But cloning sounds interesting.
And there have been firmware updates for some TB devices so look for those and see who is supporting what.
MacSales but also directly on Sonnnettech.com and others.

Cloning OS X: CCC Version 4

Cloning Windows: I rely exclusively on Paragon HDM Suite 14 but there are others

    >So, if I got this right I can install window on my internal and then clone it with HDM to an external TB device and then remove to original on the internal and run it from the external or did I misunderstand anything?
Sounds for a days playing around fun this :-)

  • After Effects is NOT using the full Twelve GB of memory on my Mac Pro late 2013 dual video cards

I would like to know if there is a reason why AE CC12 and CC13 (2014) is not using the full amount of video card memory on my MP late 2013. It's six GB per freaking card I invested in and its not accessing it.
Is there a work around this issue?

Why shouldn't it. When I upgraded to this new Mac Pro late 2013 with its dual video cards. Premier turned into a blasting fast editor. I no longer need to render my edited cuts and the scrubbing of preview and timeline footage is phenomenal. The only performance boost I've seen in AE with this new system is in rendering and I can't even say its double as fast in comparison to Premier or Encoder and its an 8-Core system with 32GB of ram. Everything else is flying.
So again to answer your why should it. I rebuttal with "Why shouldn't it". The other two mentioned programs are using GPU resources to improve performance why is AE so behind the curve.
I'm not the only one asking why. I was in the audience at a Dmala meeting here in LA with Todd Kopriva and Al Mooney previewing AE and Premier 2014.
People kept asking Todd about performance boost in between questions about new features. Todd finally just asked what do you prefer a couple of new features or performance boost. Everyone wanted performance boost over new features. If you think I'm making this up go ask Todd Kopriva.

  • New Mac Pro (Late 2013) and Motion

Although Final Cut Pro is optimized for the new Mac Pro (Late 2013), the current Motion 5.1 apparently is not.  Even when turning the render settings down, the playback of a complex motion sequence within Motion was extremely choppy.  When exporting to a ProRes file, only four to six of the available 12 threads ony my 6-core system were being only partially utilized.   I have 64 GB RAM and dual D700s with nothing else running, so system resources are plentiful.  Any suggestions out there?  Hopefully there will be an update to bring it up to speed.

The sequence I am rendering in Motion is definately complicated, with about 100 differencet images on a moving wall with reflections and multiple other effects.  This definitely pushes the system alot but I was able to use the same sequence on a very old Mac Pro (2006) and a i7 Hackintosh with an Apple 5870 card overclocked to 4 GHz without this severe stuttering on playback within Motion.  There is no shortage of memory on the new Mac Pro with 64 GB RAM and D700s with 6 GB VRAM, running all files on the main internal SSD.  Very strange.

  • Mac Pro Late 2013 Cubase 8 Problems

    Hello
I'm currently running Yosemite on the late 2013 Mac Pro.
I'm having major issues with Cubase 8.
When i select my Virus TI Channel, the whole program crashes. Sometimes it just randomly crashes.
Also, vst2 plugins are really laggy, and i can't figure out the problem, vst3 is fine. happens on 32bit and 64 bit version of cubase.
I tried reinstalling everything (including a clean OSX) but didn't help.
Back on mavericks i also had the VST2 laggy problem, but i had no problems with the virus ti at all.
I can't continue any of my projects now because it's just crashing when selecting the virus ti channel. (It does in empty projects aswel)
I tried different virus ti drivers, but that doesn't help at all. I know people that are using cubase 8 on yosemite with the virus and they have no problems, so i'm pretty sure it's not because of that.
Sometimes when i'm on skype for example, it freezes. when i quit it and try to reopen it the icon just keeps jumping in the dock. This also happened with chrome and twitter a few times, maybe the problems are connected with eachother? i don't know, just giving as much information as i can, because i really want this fixed. Cubase is showing crashlogs after it crashes but i can't figure out what it means.
Today i saw something in the crashlog about my graphicscard (2x AMD FirePro D300) could this mean something?
Anyone that could help me out here please? cause i've no idea what else to do.
Oh btw, i tried studio one aswel, the VST2 Lag problem is also happening in there.
    My setup -
    Mac Pro Late 2013
    OSX Yosemite
    12 GB Ram
    Quad-Core Intel Xeon E5
    2x AMD FirePro D300
    Cubase 8
    Virus TI Snow
    MOTU 828 MK3 Hybrid
    Greets!

I was using a hub, so I immediately removed that upon the first issues.  But the USB has still frozen after the removal of the hub. The HD is a self powered G-Tech drive.  I'll have to play around a bit more will all of your suggestions this weekend.
I woke up the computer just now to check the discussion, an am greeted with a notification from Mavericks that the "Disk Not Ejected Properly. (Eject disk before disconnecting or turning it off)"  which the disk is still connected, and the usb seems to still work fine.  In fact I was able to unplug the USB cable for the G-Tech HD, and then replug it in, everything reappeared fine.  The USB bus was not frozen (this time).
But it's this kind of flakiness that has me coming and going.  I haven't (yet) been able to identify whether the USB is the problem or the driver or a third thing I haven't figured out...

  • Mac Pro (Late 2013) Keeps Crashing Please Help

My new Mac Pro (Late 2013) keeps crashing when I use thunderbolt devices.
My set up is as follows:
    8-Core
    512 SSD
    Dual AMD 700 GPU
    64 GB Ram
It usually occurs when I am using any of the Adobe programs for video editing and rendering. I have check disc utility and found no errors. Needless to say this is getting quite annoying as I use this machine for work and sometimes can't get through anything because it keeps crashing.
    What do I do?

Just happened again. This is what it says:

  • How Will iMovie Run on New Mac Pro (late 2013)?

Is iMovie v10 ever likely to be upgraded to support the multiple-cores in the new Mac Pro (late 2013) the way Final Cut Pro X does? If not, will a fast iMac run iMovie about as well as the new Mac Pro (late 2013)?

No one here knows what Apples plans are for iMovie?
I think it's fair to say everything will run faster on the new MacPro but I don't think it's a reason by itself to upgrade hardware.
iMovie 10.0.9 runs just fine on my 2010 iMac.

  • Intermittent HDMI signal on my Mac Pro late 2013

Brand new Mac Pro. Used for short periods of time for a week with no problems. After these few days, during a little bit longer session of work, I got display problems. Intermittent output signal by HDMI cable with image disappearing from monitor and coming back for some times. Problem occurred both in 720P and 1080i mode. The problem appeared and disappeared for several times. During one of this occasions also some bad green pixel remained stuck on the display.
Left the Mac on for all the night, this morning I do not notice any problem. Does anyone knows which kind of problem I got??
It seems to be a graphic card problem isn't it??
    Thanks for help to everyone.
    System: Mac Pro late 2013 - 6-core - 32 Gb ram - 512 Gb HD - FirePro D500 3 GB - Mavericks 10.9.5

    Nothing connected to Thunderbolt ports.
Do I need to to reset SMC and PRAM anyway??
The Mac is connected to the Tv/monitor through my Bose LifeStyle.
Bose LS is setted to 1080i resolution and upscales the signal of the mac when in 720p.
Already tried at 1080i on 1080i and changed HDMI plug but problem shortly occurred.
Same device used in tha same way for years with Mini Mac without problems.
Is it possible there is some conflict between output of the Mac PRO HDMI and Bose LS??

  • My Mac Pro (Late 2013) with an Apple SSD as the only storage will not restart

I have a Mac Pro (Late 2013) with an APPLE SSD SM0256F as the only storage.  When I restart all I get is the spinning bars. I have to manually hold the power button down to force shutdown. I have let it try to restart for as long as 30 minutes. It will start just fine from a shutdown.  I am running Yosemite 10.10.2 (14C1510). I have used Disk Utility with no errors. The only time I need to restart is after a system upgrade. I have tried, as others have suggested, selecting the drive from the Startup Drive preferences with no difference. Any help is much appreciated!

  • Is MAC Pro (late 2013) compatible with Intel E5 or E7 Series 10 core CPU

Is MAC Pro (late 2013) compatible with Intel E5 or E7 series 10 core CPU?

    http://macperformanceguide.com/MacPro2013-CPU-upgrade.html
Someone did some testing and these Xeon processors scale differently, turbo-boost means it can put a core to sleep when it isn't needed and give more to the cores that are.
But, the number of apps that do use more than 8-core are in short supply.
Then there is the contention between cooling and whether the cpu or the twin GPUs get preference, OS X won't allow both to ask for full 100%.
We assume you know all there is about cpu scaling and usage and just need to see which ones are on Intel's list that are pin compatible and have the right thermal requirements and such.
Fall is always IDF and v3 of the E5

  • Strange Mac Pro (late 2013) Wake Up Problem

I used chrome browser on my Mac Pro last night and watched some YouTube videos. I stopped the video and put the computer in sleep mode without closing the chrome browser. Today, I tried to wake up the computer and something strange happened.
The Mac Pro appeared to be on because the YouTube video started to play. However, the sound only came out of its internal speaker and the two monitors were not awake. I could not login at all and had to do a hard shut down by pressing the power button for a few seconds.
Has anyone had the similar problem also? I contacted Apple Care and they asked me to do the usual SMC and PRAM resets, as well as booting into safe mode and then in normal mode.
This is the replacement Mac Pro already. The first one had boot problems when two monitors were connected. I took it to an Apple Store and a specialist examined it. He then talked to his team lead and both of them suggested I should return the Mac Pro ASAP. I saw some other user on this Forum had the same problem as well.

I just wanted to weigh in with my personal experience with Apple over the past 30-odd years. We are a small business and cannot afford a lot of tech support. However, like most businesses these days, you cannot survive for long without technology. We have had PCs and Macs over the years and have become 99.9% Mac run. I do not have issues with reliability with our Macs, which have performed in most cases flawlessly over the course of the last 10 years (prior experience was more problematic - in days prior to OS X and Intel). I have had many many PC issues even with a smaller subset of units. But I do not feel that my experience one way or the other is not demonstrative of either platform on a broad scale. My experience, like yours, is anecdotal at best. I am not doubting your experience with your Macs. I am doubtful that everyone experiences this.
So over all, my experience with our current crop  of 30 Macs from laptops to xserves is that they are extremely reliable, with very few, if any, crashes. Which is not to say we don't experience problems from time to time: hard drives fail, power supplies give out, RAM fails, and a myriad of other user-sourced issues all have happened. But the overall experience is that I can get 6-7 years of heavy use from our Macs, and 3-4 from our PCs. Each have their issues. But all technologies fail ultimately. I expect that. I find it equally hard to believe you did not have any issues with 12 years of PCs. But once again, my own experience is anecdotal and not conclusive. Which is why I try to refrain from painting either platform with a broad brush. I am grateful we have choices and that each of us can find what works for us.
I hope your experience improves and wish you luck in solving your current issues. BTW, I have found Apple Tech Support to be extremely helpful when we do have problems and I avail myself of their expertise freely. I am fortunate to live close to a thriving Apple Store with some really dedicated staff. One last thought, we just purchased a new Mac Pro (late 2013) model as well. It is a dream machine for us: powerful, fast, quiet and easy to configure. We are very happy with it!

  • Mac Pro (Late 2013) OSX abnormally slow

    Hi,
I'm not sure why but my OSX is running much slower then before, weird thing is I don't even install many softwares in it. Below is the description of the issues I'm facing.
Beach ball frenzy, lots of things ended up with beach balls from switching back and forth between apps (safari and cad). Within app itself, safari freezes occasionally and then whatever I click during that time period (like opening a new tab, links in the page) will suddenly open and this goes on with other apps as well, even finder takes a few seconds to show the content.
Start up time : 14.2 sec
Waiting for shut down menu to appear : 15 secs
Click shut down: forever (monitor goes to sleep after 10 minutes of inactivity, but computer is not turned off)
Previously, whenever software update requires restart, os will just hang and give a grey screen error, this will cause my computer to be in a boot loop where turning off will show the same error as well. Only way I find out is to open in safe boot, apply update and all goes to normal but it seems the problem is not solved cause now my OS just doesn't work properly.
Oddly enough, I got no problem installing Yosemite.
I don't think it's hardware problem cause right now my windows 8 partition is running much faster then OSX. Oh the irony

  • Mac Pro (late 2013) Philips 288p 4K Monitor Issues

I have just bought a philips 4k monitor 288p for my Mac pro and I have quite a few issues, does anyone know of a firmware upgrade to the graphics card that will solve these ?
    Issues-
Crashes on boot up when connect to monitor
Using monitor is slow i.e. mouse seems to jump a bit, text takes longer to type etc.
When in 'about this mac' it shows the monitor is running at 7350 x 4500 which is mental
I have connected via Display port to mini display port and mini display port to dual link Dvi adaptor, both have the same issues.
Any fixes would be most welcome.
    Thanks

It sounds like the monitor is not correctly identifying itself to the Mac. Try Page 15 of:
