Mac Pro Lion Support Radeon 6970

Does anyone know, will it ever happen?
I am the happy owner of a Mac Pro 3,1.  Unhappily I have started to run my MacPro primarily in bootcamp to keep up with all my architectual renderings.  The only reason I am doing this is because it is the only way to run my Radeon 6970, ie so i can 3d model in real time.  The recent posts on netkas.org about support for 7*** cards for mac pros is great and all, but i feel left behind, my 3.2 Ghz cores yearn for a GPU that can keep up, and this is 5 years later..  So does anyone know any way to get the attention of the engineers?  I just want a little support here for the how ever many thousands of loyal MacPro users who have been stuck using eBay cards or bootcamping to see any GPU performance.  I want to run the latest programs for modeling (mudbox, maya etc) without having to deal with clunky old windows 7 on my apple cinema display..
Thoughts?

Hi,
I had the same problem when installing Lion on an early 2009 Mac Pro.
It would keep going to the Lion "Restore" disk window.
The Lion install would never complete.
The 2009 Mac Pro has the latest firmware updates.
Used a clean install of Snow Leopard 10.6.8 with all Apple updates
No 3rd party software installed
12GB Memory
640GB Hard Drive
No PCIe cards
Only mouse and keyboard attached
I finally gave up on trying to get the 2009 Mac Pro to install Lion.
My Solution:
I mounted the same hard disk inside a 2008 Mac Pro (without the latest firmware updates) and ran the Lion install. No problems. Lion was installed.
Pulled the Lion drive and re-installed it in the 2009 Mac Pro.
It works.

If the backup volume is encrypted, and you forgot the password, then you'll have to erase the volume and start a new backup. There's no way to recover the password.

  • Mac Pro Lion 10.7.5 will not receive bluetooth file from Macbook Leopard 10.5.8

Since late 2008, I have been running a 2.2GHz / 3,1 / 4GB MacBook, now at 10.5.8. A few days ago I bought a 2.66 GHz / 1,1 / 6GB Mac Pro, now at 10.7.5. I can not seem to get the Lion Mac Pro to successfully receive a 3.3mb file sent, via BLUETOOTH, from the Leopard Macbook. Sending the file, from the Leopard MacBook, usually, fails and gives the message, "There was an error connecting to the device". A few times I did get an incoming file alert on the Mac Pro and the file seemed to begin coming from the MacBook; however, the estimated time varied wildly and the file transfer eventually failed and displayed the aforementioned message. I have an android 2.3.6 phone and I was able to successfully send the same 3.3mb file to the Mac Pro in a matter of a minute, or so. I may downgrade the Mac Pro to 10.5.8, because I have important software/hardware that may not be supported on Lion, but, right now, I am trying to determine compatibility with my important Leopard software/hardware. For the time being, I want to send files to the Mac Pro via BLUETOOTH, as opposed to any other transfer method.

I don't know the answer to your problem, but until you resolve it do not upgrade OS X.
I would suggest you try a reinstall:
Reinstall Lion, Mountain Lion, or Mavericks without erasing drive
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Repair
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported then click on the Repair Permissions button. When the process is completed, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion, Mountain Lion, or Mavericks
OS X Mavericks- Reinstall OS X
OS X Mountain Lion- Reinstall OS X
OS X Lion- Reinstall Mac OS X
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet
if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • Early 2009 mac pro, lion won't install

Getting very frustrating... Download and go through all the steps and downloads additional files form online then says that i cannot install and the the lion file is damaged. I have downloaded twice and even went as far as formatting and re installing leopard and updates.
Prior to this, something that could be related. I tried to install boot camp weeks ago and it would not let me saying that my boot rom has to be updated. I have looked all over the support area and have not been able to find a boot rom update.

  • Will this card work in 2008 Mac Pro? XFX Radeon HD 5770 850M 1GB DDR5 MINI HDMI DUAL DVI PCI-E (HD-577X-ZHL) (A)

Hi,  found, what looks like an interesting upgrade to my 2008 MacPro video.  This card works with Windows, UNIX and FreeBSD (the code from which is very much in MAc OSX)..  Anyone tried this card with success (or otherwise)?

Let's  assume you are running 10.8.3 as there is more support.
What did you have? what is your budget?
"work" can mean, there is no boot screen but once the system is loaded it does.
Will the output display ports work, it all  depends on how  close it is to the ATI reference design Apple uses.
Are you planning to flash it? there are site forums that can help recommend cards.
And if you work with CS6 and want to use Mercury Engine and have CUDA then you want nVidia GTX series.
I would see what Mac supported cards MacVidCards on ebay has.

  • Mac Pro with ATI Radeon HD2600, can't get Vista Aero to work

    Hi from Newbie
I have a Mac Pro with Vista bootcamp installed, ATI Radeon HD2600, 512 mb of video ram, and 8 gb's of RAM, but I can't get Vista Aero mode to work. The driver doesn't specify WDDM, could this be the problem? Can I find a compatible driver elsewhere?
    Thanks in advance.

You need to install drivers from ATI directly.
    http://ati.amd.com/support/driver.html
And when upgrading drivers, it helps to use Driver Sweeper and follow some recommended steps:
    http://evga.com/forums/tm.asp?m=396474
(applies to any driver but written with Nvidia in mind)
Of course to get full benefit of RAM, and power of your system, you need 64-bit version.

  • Mac Pro 2008 with Radeon 4870 video useable resolution on DVI limited to size of minidisplay port VGA when displays are mirrored. Did not have this problem until I plugged in new monitor (miniDisplayport), but now it affects even going back original mon

Have been using the Mac Pro since 2008.  Changed to a Radeon 4870 card early this year.   Everything was fine.
Running an old KDS monitor from minidisplay port to VGA and a 1400x1050 projector from DVI out.  Have used the
two mirrored the entire time with no trouble.
The old kDS monitor looked like it was starting to go bad so I got another monitor.  Don't have much room
so it's a 14inchwith widescreen 1328x768 display.  Hooked that to minidisplay port as it only has a VGA input.
Immediately the LCD display took over and restricted the output to the projector.
If I turn off mirroring, I can get projector back to normal.  But this makes running programs a lot more difficult.
It worked fine with mirroring on before the monitor change.  Except going back to old monitor,
now it is affecting things. I pull up display preferences.  If the displays are mirrored, even setting the projector
to 1400x1050, it says "usuable resolution 1280x1024."  It didn't use to do this at all.
Tried reseting NVRAM - no result.
Any suggestions would be helpful.  Just looking at the image on the projector, I don't see any difference from
    before.

    UPDATE:
As noted in the first post, both of these newer USB DAC work fine at 24/96 on my wife's iMac, so it's clear that they didn't both become defective when I connected them to the Macbook Pro at the same time.
Resetting the Macbook Pro PRAM didn't help, so I removed the hard shell laptop case to get to the battery and remove it, then reset the SMC. After that I could use the original DAC at 24/96 again, but only IF it was plugged into the rear USB port. If I plugged it into the front USB port then the sound was garbled and filled with noise. This was a vast improvement over no sound at all.
Then I switched to the replacement/updated DAC, but I got no sound at all from either USB port at any bit-rate. And returning to the original DAC again now results in no sound again.
Sigh... I will reset the PRAM and SMC again, and see how far I can get with this. I'd still love some help. Thanks!

  • CS4 Premiere locking up royally on little mts files on Mac Pro Lion 10.7, is CS5.5 any better

Sorry for long title, got the boxes mixed up.
Having trouble working with HDV mts files in CS4 Premiere on a new 12 core MAC Pro with Lion 10.7 OS
Have used Adode CS3 and now CS6 at my office regularly. CS6 can work with about any file type.
Found this ClipWrap program on online and have re-wrapped these mts files into .mov files. They do open and must be each rendered out and do so slowly. Scrubbing the video doesn't do well - locks it up.
Very certain I have plenty of Computer power, is CS4 a dog? It will open CS6 projects that I bring home from work and do basic cutting on with M2T files and MPEG2 HD video.
I also do not see near as many Transition and Effects options for Audio or Video in CS4 as I had back with the old CS3 when I use it - very puzzling.
Would CS5.5 give me more optimal performance with this MAC? Do I need a third party card? We now run full HD on CS6 at work without using the Blackmagic card I have. Should uninstall and re-install the software? I am a video editor, just doesn't seem to perform like it should.
I am considering looking into the Final Cut X after this. Thoughts on this subject welcome.
    Thank you.

  • Do Mac Pro 2013 support six TV using HDMI/DVI?

    Hi everyone,
I found in Mac Pro support six displays using thunderbolt, but can I using HDMI or DVI?
I have six TVs, all of them have hdmi, dvi, and vga ports, I want to using one Mac Pro (2013) to display my screen in six TV as one screen, such as this:
    www.youtube.com/watch?v=WmlsePKH6AY
Because Mac Pro using AMD display card, can I using  Eyefinity technology?
    Thanks a lot.

Yes. However, only two adopters can be passive. The rest have to be active.
All mini displayport to VGA adapters are active.
Mini displayport to DVI adopter can either be active or passive. The active ones say actie and cost more than passive ones.
If the display is greater than 1080X1200 you need dual-link mini displayport to DVI adapter. All the dual-link adopters are active and require USB connection for power.
I have no idea what " Eyefinity technology?" is

  • How do I force a Mac Pro Lion RAID 5 rebuild after replacing a failed drive?

    Hi,
My Mac Pro RAID 5 (with Apple RAID controller card and RAID 5 volume with 3 hard disks) showed degraded RAID set message due to failed drive.  After I repalced the failed drive, I was unable to add it back to the RAID set.  So I tried to removed or deleted this RAID set so that I can rebuild the RAID set from scratch.  No matter what I did, I was unable to delete the RAID set using the RAID Utility.  Can anyone help?  Thanks.

I have been posting in this forum several times yet I was not getting any help nor comment on my issue from anyone (except Grant above.  Thanks and appreciate your support).
So I have to help myself by searching various ways to resolve the issue.  I accidentally came across below findings and it solved my problem.  So I thought I will post it here just to share with whoever may run into the same problem.
When I was trying to try to change to another harddisk, I noticed that I made a mistake in mixing up the drives when I put them back.  That is for the last two drive bays(3 & 4), for some reason I put the disks backwards.  That is drive 3 in Bay 4 and drive 4 in Bay 3.  I did not realize that on the drive mount Apple actually labelled them as 1, 2, 3, and 4 respectively for Bay 1 through Bay 4.
With the two disks installed in the wrong sequence and even though one of them is a replacement disk, Apple RAID controller card still boot up the RAID set but showing degraded RAID sets and everthing is normal except it would not allow you to make the replacement disk as a global spare.
After I put the disks in the correct order, I was able to use RAID utility to make the repalcement disk as a spare and the system starting rebudiling the RAID set automatically (thought it took three days to complete).
Now my system is back to normal working.  So the solution is to insure the disks are installed back to the Mac Pro in the same order (sequence including the replacement disk) when the RAID was set up.  This is such a basic matter and I don't know how I missed it.  Hopefully sharing this experience will help someone who may have similar problem.  At lease this is the first thing to check before going any further.

  • 2008 Mac Pro, Lion, and a flaky mouse?

For some reason, shortly after upgrading to Mac OS X Lion, my 2008 Mac Pro has developed intermitent problems with my Logitech Desktop Wave mouse. The problem seems primarily associated with the left mouse button and includes problems selecting files and highlighting text, problems dragging, random double-clicks, and general weirdness.
Here's what I've done so far:
    Replaced the mouse batteries
Updated to the latest version of the Logitech Control Center (3.5.1-23)
Checked the system preferences for Mouse, Universal Access, and the Logitech Control Center
    Reset the PRAM
    Restarted the MacPro
Nothing works. I even substituted my existing Logitech mouse for another one and the problem remains. This has gotten to the point where it's driving me absolutely batty. The only thing that I haven't checked is the PRAM battery inside my MacPro, which is about 4 years old, but I'm not having any problems with the date and time resetting, which is usually indicative of a failing PRAM battery. Please help me save my sanity.
    Thanks,
    Kelly

At idle, kernel_task is running at .3-.5%, but disconnecting and reconnecting the DVI connectors didn't have any effect for me.
Plus, I'm not really having issues with jumpiness, as the user's post describes. My mouse problem has more to do with not being able to click and drag windows on the first attempt, the inability to click and drag lines of text, random double clicks instead of single clicks, and stuff like that.
However, if kernel_task is suppose to idle at 1-2%, that's clealry not happening.

If there is no response to keyboard or powerbutton presses; hold power button until it shuts off. Unplug and wait 5 minutes and then plug back in and try to start again.
