Mac Pro (Mid 2010) Won't turn on sometimes?

Hi sometimes when i try to power up my mac pro it won't turn on? like today i pressed the power button twice then it never starts up or plays the mac music it just sounds like its gonna start but never starts. after like 2 or 3 trys it will start any suggestions on what to do ? or any upgrades? its all stock right now.

No it does not blink. and i have tried reseting PRAM and SMC. Let me rephrase the problem, When i press the power button on my mac pro it will give power to my keyboard and mouse and audio interface, but the computer led above the power button doesnt light up and there is nothing going on in the actual computer screens won't turn on anything even if i let it run for 25 minutes it won't start up. so i have to force shutdown by holding down the power button for five or so seconds. Then the second time i hit the power button it usually works. and starts up correctly.
this happens every time. it usually takes me powering it up once and force shutting it down then powering it up again to work sometimes i get it on my third try? i have reset my smc by
Shut down and unplug the Mac.
Keep the Mac unplugged for at least fifteen seconds.
Plug the Mac back in and do not turn it back on for at least five seconds.
Press the power button to turn the Mac back on.
and i have reseted my pram by holding down command option p and r til i hear the mac music play again.
my computer is working just fine minus i have to start it up twice for me to get to actually use my computer.

  • Mac pro mid 2010 - screen suddenly turns black

    hi everybody,
since today my Mac pro (snow leopard) does the following:
Sometimes the screen suddenly turns black. Only the Cursor can be seen (sometimes not even that).
When I reboot the system everything seems fine, but after a few minutes the same problem occurs.
Unfortunately I'm not able to copy the specifications of my system because the black screen is faster than I am after a reboot.
I would be glad if anybody knew what I can do about it.
    Thanks guys! Chris

Safe Mode does the equivalent of a Disk Utility (Repair Disk) while it puts up that progress bar. It never get more than about 1/3 of the way across, even when everything is great. But if your drive is un-mountable after the repair cycle, your Mac cannot start up, and it will shut down.
NOT shutting down is a good sign.
Safe Mode should continue and load a minimal set of Apple-only Drivers. It does NOT load the graphics card Driver, which is why it can be useful to learn more about your graphics card.
If you are using your Boot SSD for everything, and are not using TRIM, your SSD may be clogging up with deleted data. There are several ways to eliminate or reduce the deleted data.
One way is to run any system, 10.6.8 or later, with TRIM Enabler installed, and run one pass of Disk Utility (Repair Disk) with TRIM active. This presents one additional line of output:
    "Trimming unused blocks"
and pauses for up to a minute while the unused blocks are TRIMmed.
TRIM Enabler has become much more difficult to install on 10.9.5 and later, because it conflicts with the new Kernel-extension signing feature.
Edit> If you are really running 10.6.8, you can install TRIM Enabler in your active System. It is free, but be sure to get the correct version for your system. There is an advanced-features version also available for a modest charge.

  • MacBook Pro (mid 2010), won't turn on if back cover is on?

If I try and boot my Macbook Pro with the back cover on, I get a flashing question mark folder.
If I remove the back cover and boot, everything is fine, bots up perfectly...
Could this be some kind of short, I'm totally confused...
    Any ideas...?

  • How far is it possible to upgrade a Mac Pro mid-2010 to the maximum extract.

    Hello
How far is it possible to upgrade a Mac Pro mid-2010 to the maximum performance. I would be interested how far one could come close to the performance of the new Mac Pro 2013, or is it hopeless.
    My computer
    Mac Pro
    mid-2010
    Processor 2 x 2.4 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon
    Memory 14 GB 1066 MHz DDR3 ECC
Graphics Card ATI Radeon HD 5770 1024 MB
    Software OS X 10.9.1 (13B42)
Please excuse my english is not the best because.

    For what apps?
Okay, you have the slower 2.4GHz processors, most have found that MHz still rule and matter, meaning a 6-core 3.4GHz for some applications (most) was the best and the sweet spot.
So you could upgrade to a pair of 3.2GHz 4-core (cheapest) rather than splurge on two 6-core 3.34GHz (more expensive and more cores).
First thing to do, put the system on a 256GB Samsung 840 SSD.
For photoshop and graphics, invest in some more SSD ($US300 for 500GB) and put those on a PCIe SSD controller ($300 Sonnet Tempo Pro) and put Aperture/Lightroom on one, and use the 2nd SSD for scratch.
RAM: 24-32GB would probably help all but the more casusalist of user.

I have a Mac pro(1 free bay) and a mac mini I need to back up both of them (time machine)  Is it better to use an external NAS HD or an internal hard drive on my mac pro (mid 2010)
What option has the faster GB/s?

Disk drive using native SATA bus interface will allow the drive to copy and always present and ready.
But once you have backup any hourly changes should be smaller and as long as the NAS and your switch should allow enough.
You should always have off line backups and don't rely on just one backup set or just TimeMachine.
WD RED models are designed for RAID and NAS and 7.2k instead of your more standard slower green 5400 rpm green models while still costing less than WD Blacks.

  • I have a Mac Pro Mid 2010 and Mac Pro Mid 2012, both running OS 10.8.5. When working in Illustrator the Display starts to make my Document trasparent and I can see the desktop through my document. I have to toggle my display res back and forth to fix it?

I have a Mac Pro Mid 2010 and 2012 both running OS 10.8.5. Both using ATI Radeon HD 5770 1052 MB vid cards.
Using the standard Display that came with the Macs, everytime I'm working in Ilustrator CS5 or 6, the Document I am working on gets transparent, and I when I try to move a pallete or the Document itself, the pallet or doc leaves trails from where it was to where I moved it. The only way I can resolve it is to open the Display prefs, choose a lower res, then switch it back to the "Best for Display" option. This started happening on both machines after the 10.8.5 update. I have since gone through all the Pram and Board resets, even had Apple replace the Vid Card and nothing helps. Anybody have this issue. It only happens in Illustrator.

  • I have a Mac Pro (Mid 2010) I just purchased Apollo Twin but discovered that I don't have a Thunderbolt port, is there anyway I can get round this?

I have a Mac Pro (Mid 2010) I just purchased Apollo Twin and discovered I do not have a Thunderbolt port, how can I get around this?

To use ANY ThunderBolt devices, a Mac must have left the factory with a ThunderBolt port. There are no known workarounds.
Intel holds the patents and controls the chips, and they have shown NO INTEREST in any other solutions.

How can I recover the NAS back up to put on my new Time Machine.
Talking to Apple Support Adviser was a waste of time on case number 239647273
    Any thoughts or pointers?

Keep the old OS around and just kick the tires and test new OS. Apple has a history and habit of breaking support in things like this.
You can use TimeMachine as one level of backup, and even there there were changes with Lion, I would always recommend foremost backup clones of every volume. And clone (SuperDuper etc) can be stored on something like HP NAS Media Server which also was supporting TimeMachine, iTunes - until Apple made that harder and more their own proprietary format.

Rather than "upgrade" I would clone the system, and do a clean install, then allow Setup Assistant to import your files.

  • Advice for SATA 3 Controller & Fibre Ethernet Mac Pro Mid 2010

    All
I have a few Mac Pro Mid 2010, One of which is dedicated as a main file server and currently runs OS X Lion Server, and will likely be upgraded at some point to Mountain Lion Server when OS/App is bug free (got caught with early OS X Lion Server implementation, so a little more cautious this time around).
Within there are 4 X WD RE4 Enterprise 2TB SATA 3 HDD's in a RAID 10 configuration (4TB useable ~ aka Raid 1+0, provides good data redundancy), with an OCZ Agility 3 SSD for Boot and Superdrive, no spare SATA. It all works quite well.
This Mac Pro frequently serves other Mac Pro (workstations) large +300mb and numerous small +1mb files (engineering analysis datasets) simutaneously, the workstations dump their compiled data from their SSD Scratch to this server, so there is a lot of data transfer back and forth. The server also acts as focal for Time Machine Backups for the Mac Pro and Macbooks, whilst providing a SMB and iSCSI backup location for legacy Windoze Server (Mail/FTP server) and Windoze PC VM's. Ethernet is 802.3ad bonded (2Gb link) to LAN backbone switch (32Gb bandwidth managed switch with 2Gb SMF or SFP fibre capability X 2 = 4Gb bond).
I appreciate the Mac Pro currently has a SATA 2 controller, I would like advice on drop in replacement SATA 3 controller. I have read many articles on the web with Pro's and Con's for various PCIe cards, with some SATA 3 controllers able to boot, others not capable. Some SATA3 controllers appear to have been taken directly from the Windoze arena with not real support backup etc and it is difficult to know what to go for and indeed what is actually compatible with current and future OS X and Mac Pro base hardware as the articles maybe are not current. I warrant the experience of real Mac Pro users.
Initially I would like to achieve a configuration which permits SATA 3 transfer with existing RAID 10 and Boot SSD setup. Secondly have the possibility of RAID 5 (would add in another WD RE4 Enterprise 2TB SATA 3 HDD to existing array), and maybe also eSATA as this Mac Pro in entirety backs up daily to a Synology DS1511+ which has eSATA and would take some strainout of the ethernet link to the server.
Additionally with a SATA 3 RAID setup, it's likely even with both inbuilt ethernet 802.3ad bonded the link could become saturated, what experience of Fibre Ethernet I'm guessing these would be PCIe cards?
    Thanks in advance.

    Wow! The problem rectified itself.
Inexplicably, after two hours went by, the suspended job just started running again.  Weird.
Basically an hour and a half after trying to find a solution and coming here to write for help, when I went back to try something else I noticed that the suspended job had finally resumed all on its own accord.
I had tried setting and unsetting the spare and restarting the Mac Pro several times to no avail.
The last time I set the disk as a spare was 1:10 p.m., and the rebuild job started up on it's own at 2:06 p.m. -- weird that it waited almost an hour, but I'm just happy it is working.
    Problem "solved."

  • Mac Pro Mid 2010 keeps restarting after installing OSX Mavericks

    Hello,
my Mac Pro Mid 2010 started quitting and restarting after installing the Mavericks OSX. I was thinking about wiping out the drive and reinstalling OS X Mountain Lion but thought I should see if anyone else is experiencing these issues before going that route.
It just intermittently restarts and it tries to restart multiple times before it will actually start up again. It's not issuing a crash report. It just quits out and restarts. It started doing this just at initial startup. It now will quit and restart at any given time and it will take multiple times attempting to start before it actually starts up. I've even had to shut it down because it would going through that startup sequence without starting. No perceivable pattern as to why this is occurring. No specific programs that it occurs in. The only thing I know for certain is that it started happening after installing Mavericks OSX – OSX Mountain Lion was fine. I also made sure to unistall Mountain Lion before installing Mavericks with those potential issues of trying to install one operating system over another. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

    Hello Linc,
I followed your instructions. I have information for the BOOT_TIME and for SYSTEM DIAGNOSTICS sections. I've included all within one post with heading separators between the two sections. I wasn't sure if you needed this posted as two separate posts or not. If this isn't correct, please let me know and I'll do again. Hopefully I didn't pull too much content for the BOOT_TIME section. I was trying to search for enough diverse content that would clearly represent what might be occurring. It was also challenging to choose content for the BOOT_TIME section though because there was no time-stamped content close to the time of BOOT_TIME time stamp. The last time I restarted my system was hours before I attempted your exercise. And, I haven't experienced "crashing"  more than it just automatically restarts in the middle of things. I wonder if that's why there were no .crash reports? There was only a list of .panic reports so that's what I provided. Thanks for your help Linc.

  • Mac mini mid-2010 won't shut down

I have the server version of the Mac Mini mid-2010. It is running Mountain Lion (not server).  When told to shut down from the Apple icon menu, it won't. The "round thing icon" just spins indefinitely.  Can't do an EFI update, of course, because the computer won't shut off to do the update. There are no downloads available... it's up to date at 10.8.2
    Ideas??

Make sure all work is saved and backed up; log off all other users if possible. Close all applications except for Terminal.
    In Terminal, type
    sudo shutdown -h now
Type in your password as requested. The computer should power off immediately.
Restart the computer in Safe mode, examine the console for logs to determine the cause of the problem.

  • My MacBook Pro (mid 2010) won't startup correctly in my admin account, but works fine if I use the guest account...

My MacBook Pro (mid-2010) suddenly stopped working when I was overseas, but I managed to fix it when I returned back to the States after I reformatted and erased the disk, then installed Yosemite. I lost most of my files but didn't really care, though I noticed that some pictures from iPhoto had survived and were in the Trash folder.
I thought I could copy/paste them back into iPhoto, but it wouldn't let me since they were still in the trash. I started getting an error message for EACH PICTURE saying it couldn't be copied because it was in the trash, and when I realized that I'd have to click "ok" 644 times (once for each picture), I tried to restart, then shut down, and eventually forced a shut down by holding down the power button. This is where the problem started...
After trying to startup again, I was able to login to my admin account, and the desktop image would load, but I'd get the spinning rainbow wheel and the computer would remain frozen like that from then on. I tried to repair the disk (there was nothing wrong), and even re-installed the operating system again, but still the problem persists. BUT, if I login with my guest account, everything works fine.
I'm guessing it has something to do with it somehow being frozen on those error messages for those 600+ pictures, but I have no idea how to fix/unfreeze it. Any tips or suggestions?

Can the use of SATA3 instead of SATA2 hdd lead to some issues with my macbook?
I can try to find and buy new SATA2 sdd hdd but they are expensive and I'm not sure it will fix the restarting issue.
SATA3 is backwards compatible with SATA2.  That is not likely to be your problem.
Based on what you have done, I suggest a reinstall of the OSX.
    Ciao.

  • Mac pro early 2008 migration to mac pro mid 2010

I have a mac pro early 08 and am trying to migrate all of this to my newish mac pro mid 10 and am finding it difficult to do, i have basic progs on mac pro 10 and maverick installed and thats it, but am unable to find how to get all my 'stuff' from one to other. help

I'll watch to see if you get an answer. I have a late 2008 Mac Book Pro 15 with the same problem. It boots xp good every time. But I often need to use external monitor to gain control of the OSX boot. It gives tone, shows gray, shows apple and gear the short blue and then strait to black and front LED seems to indicate sleep. Very frustrating. Happens on both use best graphics and conserve battery display settings. Tried the reset pram, safe boot, save boot verbose. All no good.

  • Macbook Pro (mid-2010) Won't Always Boot Following 10.9.4 Update (Error Images Included)

Two days ago I updated my mid-2010 Macbook Pro 13" to OS X 10.9.4 (from previous 10.9.3) and everything went fine as usual. However, yesterday, when I was turning off my laptop since I was out all day the system started behaving strangely. The "Shutdown" or "Restart" dialog's wouldn't do anything. I didn't think much of it at the time and simply held the power button down as I didn't have the time to play proverbial "20 questions" to figure out what was going on.
However, since then, my Mac has been unable to boot to OS X consistently. I tried to repair/verify the disk and permissions from the recovery partition, reset the SMC, and even utilized an old set of recovery tools I had running on a Snow Leopard external drive.
The list of everything I've tried:
Verifying the permissions through recovery which fails with error code 22 (an unknown error occurred) on every permission issue it found (only a few)
Verifying the disk which finds nothing wrong with it through recovery
Utilizing my Snow Leopard recovery tools HDD to just simply verify permissions and the disk. From the SL Recovery Tools HDD the Disk Utility was able to verify and repair any permission issues and as previously said, no disk issues were found
Tried re-installing OS X through Recovery which fails almost immediately due to unknown issues
    Reset SMC
Tried "Safe Boot" by holding the Shift Key down
When I boot my Snow Leopard Recovery Tools HDD that I made and run through the verify/repair of disk utility I am able to restart the system and get into OS X Maverics for several reboots before the same errors (included in photos below) occur with 100% consistency.
This is how I was able to set verbose mode to see what was going on even though I haven't the slightest clue (I've never had a problem with OS X till today and I understand how Windows works far more than OS X - in fact I use OS X so I don't have to worry about things like this). Everything on the partition seems to still be in tact, the drive is working, but something is causing what's included in the screenshots to occur - and when these errors occur everything seems to get set into overdrive (the fan spins at max, the processor heats up, and the system in general warms up to what it feels like under very heavy load).

Thank you for your help in advanced.

Verifying a disk or permissions doesn't fix anything. They must be repaired. Then you will need to do a reinstall of OS X:
    1. Restart the computer into the Recovery HD:
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the
COMMAND and R keys until the Utilities menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the
computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager
screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    2. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Install OS X and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
Upon completion you can reinstall the 10.9.4 update: OS X Mavericks 10.9.4 Update (Combo), if required.
