Mac Pro Missing Serial Number after SSD install

After installing a new SSD in an unused bay in my Mac Pro (OS 10.8.4) and setting it as my start-up disk with only System, Apps, Library and Users Folders on it, I have had a remarkable improvement in performance - things simply snap open now & I have not seen a spinning beachball/cogwheel until....
Messages will not work now - on opening, the program asks me to enter my Apple ID & Password but will not accept the entries (which I have double-checked & confirmed on my Mac Book Pro, iPad & iPhone) - I get a prolonged spinning cogwheel & then a message that it could not connect and I should check my Network Connections - I did & they are all working fine for other programs.
On line sources indicate that the iMessage Registration process involves the Mac's Serial number.
This no longer appears under the About This Mac Menu item when I click on the Version 10.8.4 line (the Build Number does appear).
This 4 year old Mac Pro has never had the Logic Board replaced.
And iMessages worked great prior to the SSD install.
Any ideas?

you cloned the system? used Migration or Setup Assistant?
I doubt it has anything to do with the SSD.
But you might include what you did, what make of SSD even, and some brands (but not Samsung) would need firmware update.
You also need to use TRIM Enabler on any and all SSDs (unless you paid dearly and bought an Apple device).
Before you clone, install TRIM Enabler!
And after you clone, run Disk Utility's REPAIR DISK on the SSD -- just to be on the safest side.

SSD Maintenance
try creating a new user account. I doubt it is the SSD, or you, though it could be your OS install or just the common issues with iMessages. Is there not a forum for it? I'd think there would be.

    However, after I got it back I found my serial no. in System Profile becomes "System Serial#". I brought it back to the service center in Hong Kong, they said it's normal after replacement the motherboard.
    Would this affect the authorization in iTunes and some apps?
    Also I found occasionally I got error log for my internal or external hard drive, I'm not sure if it's affected. (may be I should post this in OS X section) It didn't occur before the replacement.

    This happened to my 2006 Macbook when the logic board was replaced under Applecare by my local service centre due to a known issue at the time (random shutdown). It didn't affect the warranty or cause me any problems so I didn't bother to go back to them although I later found out that they could and should have reset it at the time.
    The only thing that might have been a problem if I had had more than one computer was that it made my iTunes account think that I had two computers authorized, i.e, a sort of "ghost" left over from the previous serial number. As you can only have five machines authorized with an account it means you have one less available to you even though you don't actually have that computer. This was not a problem to me as I didn't need five authorizations, and anyway you can go into your account once a year and reset your account. You may need to do this if you have five computers you need to play your iTunes purchases on.
    Still lazy of the repair centre not to reset the serial number for you though.

So I made sure that all was backed up on Time Machine, I did restart cmd R, erased my hard drive and have reinstalled Mountain Lion from the internet. The reason for doing this was to reinstall just my music programmes, but this has not been straightforward.
    In trying to re-install Logic Pro 9 (which was an upgrade from 8) it has asked me for the serial number which I CANNOT FIND ANYWHERE. I bought 9 from Regent Street in 2009, but cannot find the email that comfirmed purchase. Logic 8 I bought direct from Apple in 2008 on educational discount, and I do have an Apple ID. However record of purchases kept online seem only to go back 18 months. What can I do??

  • Acrobat XI Invalid Serial Number After Failed Install

    Hello,
       We currently have Adobe Acrobat XI on an enterprise license. I went to install this on 3 of our Windows 7 tablets. Prior to my attempt, I removed Adobe Reader XI which is what I always do. After that I started the installer on the machine and entered the key just fine. All 3 tablets got stuck around 96-97% and failed with an error 1935. I then followed the instructions located here:

      Following a reboot, I tried to install again and now I am receiving the "Invalid Serial Number" error when trying to click "Next" on the installer. It won't even let me choose install trial and go. The next button does nothing when selecting trial. I tried running the offical Adobe Acrobat Cleaner and the Adobe CS6 cleaner (since Acrobat XI is part of CS6 technically). Both programs found items to delete but following a reboot I'm still receiving the same error. I also have other XI enterprise serials available and none of them work. I have a feeling something happened on the tablets that is causing the installer to think it's the wrong version or type for those serial numbers.
      Any assistance is greatly appreciated.

  • Boot Camp: Mac Pro won't start after Windows install

    After installing Boot Camp on a Mac Pro dual 2.66 (firmware updated), XP installer went through installation & copying files, then restarted. Went to a black screen with white Windows-style text that said something along the lines of "XP cannot start from this CD, press any key to restart." Totally unresponsive, held down power to restart. Will no longer power up. Have reset the SMC without any effect. Makes a brief sound when trying to start, but does not actually start up.
    Is there any known power issue that I might be able to solve myself, or is the supply likely blown?

    I put Vista on its own dedicated drive, 64GB Vista, the rest as FAT32 to make it easier to share files. I had to remove the OS X drives in order to allow Windows/Vista to install. Once installed, had a black screen and some blue crash screen, until I ran the BootCamp driver updates.
    I would try unplugging your drive(s) first and see if you boot from Tiger Installer DVD - or better, boot Apple Hardware Test (hold down "d" on startup from Install Disk #1).

    The serial number will be on a small card the size of a CD sleeve in the documentation you received in the box. This card is easily overlooked in the retail box & even easier to miss when iWork is pre-installed.

    You can type in your machines serial number here to find out a little more about it, however, it won't tell you what components came from what countries to be assembled into the unit you have. 

  • Lost Aperture serial number after Leopard install

    Installed Leopard yesterday with Archive and Install option.
    Went to run Aperture today, got prompt for serial number and, unfortunately, I cannot find the paper copy to re-enter it. Last update to Aperture puts it at 1.5.6. Can the file with the serial number be found somewhere in the Previous System folder? A number of Apple products, Aperture among them, are empty folders in the Application Folder in Previous System.
    My Aperture Library is in the Pictures folder of my boot disk, and plainly shows. Selecting that file does start Aperture, which then prompts for the serial number.

    The updater is looking for the app in the Applications folder. It must be there, not renamed and not in a subfolder. Can you post a small picture/screen shot of your Applications folder where Aperture is?
    If you aren't presented with the update automatiacally in SW Update, then that suggests that you don't have the app in the right place/or named right. This is a problem for some folks everytime there is an update - they renamed it or moved it and forgot they did that. If you download the manual update from the apple support pages, it won't update either unless it finds it in the right place - the same place the auto update is looking for it actually.
    And I was referring to being able to drag a file into this directory:
    /Library/Application Support/ProApps/
    That is the folder that must have the right permissions. If you can't drag into it, the app won't be able to save the serial file there.

    Tina Hadley did you migrate/transfer your applications over to your new Macintosh?  If so this could cause problems with your serial number being recognized.  Please run the available uninstallers located in Applications/Utilities/Adobe Installers folder.  Once this is done you will also want to run the CC Cleaner Tool.  Details on the use of the CC Cleaner Tool can be found at Use the CC Cleaner Tool to solve installation problems | CC, CS3-CS6 - http://helpx.adobe.com/creative-suite/kb/cs5-cleaner-tool-installation-problems.html.

    Check that the serial you are using is the correct one..
    Typically the problem is either you are misreading the serial and therefore typing it in wrong. Check you are correctly entering zeros or O.. and so on....
    or...
    You bought the LP9 upgrade version.... which requires the LP8 full serial as well.
    If it is the LP9 upgrade serial.. (and not the LP9 full serial) you must enter your original LP8 full serial first and then the upgrade serial for LP9.. when it asks for it.
    Failing that.. you can obtain a replacement serial from Apple.. using this form.....

    Vista 32 bit, SP1 and up-to-date on all OS updates.
