Mac Pro (Model: A1186, EMC: 2133) restore

I have a Mac Pro (Model: A1186, EMC: 2113) that I am selling. I need to erase all content and restore to the original settings. This is a work computer and I no longer have the original disk to restore. Is there a way to restore the Mac without the disk?
Thanks

No, you need to have original Install or retail Tiger(10.4.7) disc to restore the system.
As far As I know, only available old OS on disc media for your Mac Pro at Apple Store is Snow Leopard(10.6).

This chart says your Mac Pro 3,1 will boot custom 10.5.1, "Full retail" 10.5.2 and any "Full retail" 10.6 from DVDs.
If you clone from another drive that contains a "Purchased" 10.7 or 10.8 that would work as well,  but a cloned copy will be tagged with the same Apple_ID as the original image.
"Shipped in the box" or "pre-Installed" versions will only run on the specific model they shipped with, even if the are Updated with Software Update.

I need help identifying which Magsafe Power Adapter I need for my Macbook Pro Model A1398, EMC 2673?

Provided the computer-end fits, you are free to use one with a HIGHER Wattage rating. No damage whatsoever will be done to any component, but it will likely run cooler (but may be slightly heavier).
If you use one with too LOW a Wattage rating, you will not be able to charge and run at the same time, and your computer's top speed (for its most intensive computations) will be limited.

  • HT5634 Mac Pro Model Identification

    Hi,
I am trying to determine my Mac model so I can use the table in this article to identify which versions of Windows I can install.
But on my Mac Pro, 'About This Mac' shows something called 'Model identifier' as 'MacPro1,1' which does not match any of the Mac models listed in this article. How do I identify my Mac Pro model in terms of year of manufacture as shown in this article?
Any help on this would be gratefully appreciated.
    Regards Gordon

    Hi,
Thanks for the quick response. I am currently running Windows 7 Ultimate 32-bit version via Boot Camp with no problems. But if you are correct about my Mac Pro model and the table in the article is also correct then I should not be able to run this version of Windows.
The question now is should I reinstall my previous version of Windows i.e. Windows Vista Ultimate 32-bit version or stick with Windows 7?
    Thanks Gordon

  • Advice on choosing a new mac pro model

Hi. I'm looking to buy a new Mac Pro for use mainly with AE, Premiere, Photoshop plus Element 3d and trapcode. Should I spend most $$ on the CPU or the GPU? For just under $6.5K I can get the 3.7 quad+dualD700's or the 3.5 6core +dual D500's (Plus 32 GB of Ram). Any advice would be appreciated. BTW, I'm looking to do hi rez 4K renders in Element 3d (I know this uses GPU but am unsure as to whether I can get away with the lower spec'd GPU's. Does anyone use this with lots of vram for hi rez renders and how much vram seems adequate? Thanks!

You're not saying which model of MacPro you are considering, but if you go with the Quad, you will NOT be able to run all 11GBs of ram. You have 4 slots, and slots 3 & 4 are shared. So you can put the 2x4 for the 8, but then you will only be able to run the 2x1 for another 2, giving you a total of 10GBs.

  • Which Mac Pro model has the least known Issues?

Wanted to get some oppinions from folks on buying a slightly older mac. My buddy got a new rig for the studio so its time for me to get a machine that will help me at least live in the same decade as my colleagues.
Heard there are some PowerPC models with PRAM issues, Intel-based models with graphical problems, etc. While I may be confusing a couple of widely known issues Ive seen recently, just wanted to know what you feel is the most trouble-free Mac Pro intel based model in a dual or quad processor config. Thanks for your input!

If you're considering getting a 12 core Mac Pro, and you're using Final Cut Studio, I would wait a while or get an 8 core machine. I just got a 12 core machine a couple weeks ago and have been having problems with Compressor working properly on this system (the Mpeg2 output has a green stripe over the center of the image). At least one other user in the Compressor forum with the same hardware has confirmed the same problem I've had. Even after a clean install of OSX and Final Cut Studio they still asked me to reinstall Compressor as a possible solution, so obviously they're a bit oblivious to the problem.

  • Can you use a VGA monitor on the Mac Pro model?

I'm considering getting a new Mac Pro to replace my beloved PowerMac G4 MDD. I have a ViewSonic Graphics Series 19" CRT monitor (VGA) that I use as a palette monitor, with a 19" SyncMaster LED as my main monitor (DVI). My PowerMac's video card has both DVI and VGA ports.
Will I be able to use my VGA monitor with the basic Mac Pro (MB871LL/A)? Will a DVI/VGA video port adapter work, and if so, will it work well? Thanks.

I had two 19" Viewsonic WS monitors hooked up to my X1900XT on my MacPro and it worked just fine with the VGA/DVI adapters (I got the small 2" white adapters that don't have any "cord" in the middle. I swapped them out for two 22" WS Acer monitors and now use the DVI inputs and I am still happy.

  • Simple question about Mac Pro models

    Hello
I'm a vary happy Mac Pro owner (MacPro3,1 8 [email protected]). I use it for numerical simulations (Computational Fluid Dynamics and Mesoscale Simulations) and it has been and excellent machine, scaling impeccably for parallel computations and solid has a rock (typical uptime of 2 months because I like to make some updates once in a while).
I confess, I'm not a usual at the Apple Store, and one of this days I went there and I didn't saw hexa cores for sale. Is this correct? After realizing that the machines for sale where Nehalem's I also missed the 3.3GHz cores for 2 quad configuration. Is this also correct?
    My wish:
Could anyone please help me and describe the present/nearly future in terms of Mac Pro hardware? I need to buy two more machines (preferably two 2X6 core machines) to be operational in mid September.
    Thanks for your time

You may want to build a PC.
There was no dual 3.3, and Apple is amiss and behind and upsetting a lot of users with not getting out Gulftown/32nm Nehalem.
Actually, Intel roadmap for Xeon is best seen on Wikipedia.
I don't really think 10.6 is well married to current processors with hyper-threading though, maybe they'll catch up to Windows 7 and the help Intel's compilers offer.
I would also think multiple GTX 480s in SLI would benefit if you can use CUDA.
The Mac Pro is based on Intel Skulltrail platform of course, yours Skulltrail 2. eVGA is ready with their own SR2: support for dual Xeons, 4 x SLI and 12 DIMMs for 48GB.

  • Can I restore a Mac Pro with a .dmg made from a 10.6.8 iMac?

    Is the above possible?
This article gives the following list of files to be removed before restoring to non-matching hardware:-
    sudo rm /Volumes/imageName/var/db/BootCache.playlist
    sudo rm /Volumes/imageName/var/db/volinfo.database
    sudo rm /Volumes/imageName/System/Library/Extensions.kextcache
    sudo rm /Volumes/imageName/System/Library/Extensions.mkext
    sudo rm -r /Volumes/imageName/var/vm/swap*
However the article dates from 2004 and the days of 10.3.  In my experience the only one of these files that still exists in the same location is volinfo.database while Extensions has become a directory.
Can anyone offer an updated list of files to remove to image to non-identical hardware?  Or other advice on not having to spend 2 days or so building an entirely new image from scratch.
    Thanks in advance,

A standard retail 10.6.8 system from an iMac should work without modification on a Mac Pro. I've done this myself many times. The last Mac Pro model came with 10.6.4 installed.
    My MO is:
Repair hard drive and permissions on Source.
Clone Source to another hard drive using the Restore option of Disk Utility.
Test boot the clone to be sure it works.
Connect clone to Target machine and boot it from the clone.
Use Disk Utility's Restore to restore the clone to the Target.
Disk Utility can do this much faster than it takes to make a disc image. Furthermore, DU verifies the copies which precludes problems. Disc images on the other hand can be flakey and unreliable. They are also more easily corruptible than a clone. And, you can boot a clone. You cannot boot from a disc image. Third-party backup utilities can also be used to maintain incremental backups to the clone so you always have a current backup.

  • Error: trying to restore time machine mac mini to mac pro

    Hi,
I'm trying to upgrade our Profile Manager "server" from a Mac Mini to a Mac Pro, but the time machine restore isn't working it halts after 1-2%.
When I tried the backup on a Macbook Air it restored correct and booted.
Anyone got a clue on why I can't restore to a new Mac Pro?
    Regards
    Johan

    Sorry about that.
    Mac mini is a late 2012 (10.9.5)
Mac Pro is the new one =) Xeon 6-core. (doesn't really say what model it is.
I've read that guide but it doesn't have anything on TM unexpectedly just crashing/giving up on a full restore.

  • What year/ model is my mac pro? serial ends with 6R0GP

    Hello Geniuses,
I have spent hours trying to find the year and or model of my Mac Pro 2 x 3 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon.
The search is not for the faint of heart.  I running Lion and want to know if I can upgrade to Mountain Lion.  I had a similar experience trying to figure out my "kernel" to see if I could run Logic at 64 bit.  I fianlly just tried it and it worked beautifully.  I don't think downloading a new OS to "find out" would be a good idea .  I've found many "theories" from users who do not have my set up.  Please consider that the model and year does not show up on my "about this mac" pop up menu.  Just my processor, memory, graphic, serial number and software. I found one article that had a link to "Tech Specs" that must have been changed. I could not find where I could enter my serial number to search this info. There are several articles out there that state other wise.  It's not greyed out. It's not there.  I've looked under all hardware.  Where is the year and model hiding?
    Thank you for reading

    Thank You Hatter and everyone,
my hardware header simply states "Mac Pro"
I believe I may have replaced the ram in order to have matching sets when beefed up.
Here's what I can tell you:
    Mac OSX 10.7.5
    Processor 2 x3 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon
    Memory 16 GB 667 MHz DDR2 FB-DIMM
Graphics  NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT 256 MB
    Model Name:                              Mac Pro
    Model Identifier:                        MacPro2,1
    Processor Name:                      Quad-Core Intel Xeon
    Processor Speed:                     3 GHz
    Number of Processors:             2
    Total Number of Cores:             8
L2 Cache (per Processor):         8 MB
    Memory:                                   16 GB
      Bus Speed:                               1.33 GHz
      Boot ROM Version:                   MP21.007F.B08
      SMC Version (system):              1.15f3
Serial Number (system):            ending with 6R0GP
        Hardware UUID:           00000000-0000-1000-8000-001D4F4574B8
    So yes, it's a Mac Pro2,1
I could have sworn that  I found an article years ago when I was trying to run Logic 9 as 64 bit - that showed my Kenel was 64 - I was unable to find it later.   I am clearly not as informed as you. How and where do I find if I have EF 132 or EF164 ?
I found another thread where people with notebooks ugraded their main hard drive to a larger size and they were allowed to upgrade/ download to Mountain Lion.  I was hoping to upgrade in order to use the new Logic X.  Whatever I have, it works great with Logic 9 running in 64, but I end up using another software when I have a lot of tracks. I am quite amazed as to what Logic 10 is capable.  If ML is a pipe dream, then I better start saving my money.
