Mac Pro no longer mounts external usb devices

Hi there,
Last week my mac pro stopped mounting my ipod shuffle as a disk (i was using it like a usb memory stick), i thought it was a problem with the shuffle and left it aside. But just yesterday the mac stopped mounting my external lacie 500gb disk. I had never had any problems before this.
I then tried both the shuffle and external hd on my powerbook g4. They work perfectly!
I then thought it might have been a problem with the usb ports on the mac pro - although all my other usb devices were still working - so i booted into xp with bootcamp, and the devices were recognised in xp perfectly.
After searching various threads on different forums the general idea for this problem seemed to be to reinstall osx, which i have just done, and no joy. Im still not able to mount either of these devices.
System profiler sees the devices, but thats it.
Also, i recently bought a new usb memory stick (as i thought the shuffle was dead), this mounts and works perfectly!
Anyone got any ideas?!
Thanks

Yes, i did the combo update immediatly after reinstalling osx and before pluggin in the usb device.
The problem developed just before the release of 10.4.9, so i dont think it was the update that did it.
I've only just got this MP back from Apple. The PSU had to be replaced. It took them nearly 3 weeks to do

Apple uses many manufacturers and it's massive also websites prefer to report on Apple whether true or false because it brings more hits.
Amd by "others" I meant other people on iPads - not other devices/manufacturers.  It's possible to do so, I just want to know how.  I honestly don't think we'll ever be in a Post-PC era until all tablets allow us to use USB in the way computers do.
No, USB is not the future, you missed the memo about cloud and wireless computing?

  • OS refuses to mount external USB flash drive. Says a piece of OS software is missing.

OS refuses to mount external USB flash drive. Says a piece of OS software is missing. The flash drive (thumb drive) usually lights up but does not go through the flashing on/off that was tyjpical when first inserting it.
I tried an external hard drive and got the same results; that is, no result, as if it wasn't connected. No icon appears on the desktop and no device shows up in the sidebar. It (10.6.8, Mac Pro Duo) had worked perfectly before this, of course.

    Hmmmmm,,,,
Disconnected all peripherals. Did a Safe Mode startup and that worked fine. Very limited features, of course.
Started up with the Snow Leopart (10.6.3) disk. Used disk utility to verify permissions and ran disk repair on all three internal HDs. No repairs needed.
Ran Drive Genius and did the same things, as a double-check.
Plugged in the flash drive (thumb drive) and it came up fine (still operating the OS from the Sno-Leop disk).
I wanted to re-start with the disk and bring up the Apple Hardware Test as you suggested. I had lots of kernal panics on a previous machine, a G4 desktop, and has used that at that time (with a 10.2 or 10.4 disk). thought I remembered that you hold the D key down when starting up from the disk and it would open the hardware test, but either I remember wrong or it works different in 10.6 because it was just a normal startup.
How do I get to the Hardware Test on the 10.6 Snow Leopard disk?
Restarted without the disk and the Mac Pro desktop still showed the gray screen with what Apple calls the "prohibitory" sign, the circle with the diagonal line in it.
I decided to load the OS disk onto HD 3 and designate that as the startup disk, which I did and it works fine. The USB flash drive loads properly, opens, etc. just as it should. I haven't yet plugged in the peripherals (scanner, printer, second DVD/CD recorder, tablet, an external drive, or connected to ethernet yet. Will do those one at a time and see if any of them casued a problem.)
    Am I right in thinking:
    A) HD One might have bad sections. I didn't defrag with Drive Genius (26% fragged) or look for bad blocks, which I'll probably do tonight.
or B) the OS has been slightly corrupted and may need reloading
or C) I have a virus or conflict (though I haven't added anything new lately). I do have the ButtonManager loading problem for Mac. which is talked about on MacRumors site, etc. but the timing of its appearance and this problem don't match.
Apologies for being so wordy; want to get all information that may be helpful. I appreciate your interest.

    David,
I am not sure why they are crashing the computer, but you definiately want to be careful with an external RAID 1.  Here is what I would try first in your scenerio:
    1. Reset the drives somehow.  Obviously you can't do this on the iMac, maybe by formating them one at a time on a PC.
    2. Plug these drives in through a USB hub (possibily even a powered hub) since you can't connect the drives through each other.  Then before you connect the hub to the mac, you should have the drives fully spun up (in manual power mode, switch on the back) and the hub and on before connecting it to the Mac.  This way, both drives have a higher chance of appearing simulteanously to the Mac reducing any need for rebuilding because of out-of-sync issues.
    3. I'd then follow the steps in this article to reformat the drives for your iMac again:
    http://macs.about.com/od/usingyourmac/ss/raidmirror.htm
I've never attemepted a RAID 1 on external drives so you'd have to let me know how this goes.
If all else fails, you could jump in on an order the school makes with the following company and get an enclosure to tranfer your drives into.  We have at least three of these enclosures at school, we are running one in RAID 1 and the other two in a RAID 0 configuration.

  • MBP Does Not Recognize External USB Devices

MBP does not "see" external USB devices (such as Garmin Nuvi GPS) or any thumb drive. No external USB devices show up in Finder nor does Disk Utility see them. No cable issues. Have tried restarting several times, but to no avail. This MBP used to recognize these USB devices, but no longer do so.
I have seen this question posed several times in forum, but no suitable answer. Don't know if it is H/W or S/W problem.

    Hi Terry Temple
Is there at least any power going to the USB ports? ( as in if for example you plug in a USB light, will it switch on? )
If there is power in the USB ports it might be a software problem.
Try resetting the SMC see link: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1411
also try re-set the PRAM see link: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379
However if you do not have any power at all it probably is a hardware problem.
    Is it still under warranty?

Hey HoustonSmith, using to much power generally means a short. Do not use this cable, the lighting cables have a history of failure; shorting out. If within one year of purchase date take it to Apple, the cable also has a one year warranty, if short is do to manufacturing flaw and not abuse Apple will replace it free! Otherwise a new cable is around $30. You could also try a reset or restore, but don't think a glitch is your problem. If you do try to restore, just remember to make backup copies of all the info / data on this iPod to your computer first, then attempt to restore. Good luck. Cheers.

  • NFS export external USB device fails

I am trying to NFS export a FAT32 formatted external USB device, which fails with the error:
    /sbin/nfsd: Can't export /Volumes/<external>: Operation not supported (45)
I am able to export internal/HFS drives, which have the "Owners Enabled: Yes" attribute, and therefore assume I need to set the flag accordingly on my external drive.
Despite the fact that the device has been assigned a uuid (it appears to be in place in .fseventsd and running 'repair disk' echos it in syslog), I get this error when running vsdbutil:
vsdbutil: Couldn't update volume information for '/Volumes/<external>/': Invalid argument
vsdbutil: no valid volume UUID found on '/Volumes/<external>/': Invalid argument
    And diskutil returns this:
Permissions are not enabled on the disk (-9973)
I attempted to add the uuid to /var/db/volinfo.database in order to set the permissions there, to no effect.
I don't believe that I am the only person who has attempted this, but I can find no evidence to the contrary. Thank you.

NFS exporting requires specific NFS serving support from the file system.
Unfortunately, the "msdos" file system implementation doesn't currently
    support NFS exporting.
If you'd like that support added, I would strongly encourage filing a
    bug report/enhancement request with Apple:

  • Mounting external USB CD drive on Mac Book Pro

    Hi all,
    Hoping you can help.
My late 2008 MacBook Pro has been near bulletproof for me however the one weakspot (besides old OS) is the CD drive.
It can function, intermittantly, but not reliably enough for me to install my new Snow Leopard CD and upgrade the IOS.
So I have been trying to mount an external USB CD Drive - the MacBook Air Superdrive.
I can see it in the System Profiler, it draws 500 mA current, which apparently is all it requires.
However I cannot see it in Disk Utility.
I hear it move and power up on reboot, but the CD drive simply never mounts. It should mount, there is a CD I've accidentally left in there.
    'tis very annoying.
Is there any way to get this external CD drive mounted properly?
Appreciate any assistance you can offer.
    Many thanks...

    Which drive?
In the built in drive, I can occasionally insert a CD and it will mount and read okay, but most of the time it simply spits the CD out - it also does this with CDs it has played happily with for a while (such as my Snow Leopard CD which I've been trying to install from ;P )
In the external drive, yes, there is a CD in there, however it was in there from when I had the CD drive plugged into my Mac mini server (server now broken, so ejecting CD is difficult - that's a whole other kettle of fish...)
I don't understand why Apple System Profiler can see the external CD drive, and it reports no issues, but yet Disk Utility does not.
Do I need to find a way of disabling the built in drive somehow before OS X will recognise a different CD drive?

  • Mounting external USB at boot on ppc mac mini 10.4 Tiger

    Hello,
I'm trying to find out the best way to mount an external USB HD on boot, on Tiger. The default behaviour of the system is to mount external devices when a specific user logins. That's smart, because in theory we don't need to lose time mounting the device on boot first, and secondly MacOSX will mount the external device using the user's specific permissions to access the data.
My problem is that I don't want to wait for a login, I want to mount the external device as soon as the system starts. The system is a mac mini tiger 10.4.11 with macports installed. I manage it via "Remote Desktop" and (mostly) ssh.
I'm thinking about creating a wrapper and a launchd (plist) file.
Is there another way, using the kinda weird fstab syntax on using cli commands like "automount"?
    Thanks in advance

  • Will the late 2013 Mac Pro boot from an external drive (4Tb, USB 3) with a cloned Win7 x64 partition on it?

    Hello all,
I ordered a CTO Mac Pro for heavy rendering and animating work, and I am planning on using bootcamp to install a windows partition (for 3DsMax). As I am now using a HP Elitebook 8770W that has several valuable files and projects on it, I have bought a Seagate 4Tb external Desktop Drive that uses USB 3.0 to use as a backup drive. Now, as I saw that Bootcamp Assistant only supports installing a x64 version of Windows 8, my question is:
Will a late 2013 Mac Pro using bootcamp assistant boot from an external USB drive with a cloned partition running x64 win7? Or do I really have to buy Windows 8 and install that to my internal SSD, and then use the migration assistant to copy over my projects?
    Thanks!

Posted? or found in new builds?
BCA should really just pull whatever the latest drivers are when run.
If it is with how it partitions and sets up nMP and its partition for Windows that is another matter and makes sense.
Some people want UEFI native booting in Windows, and my experieince with that on PCs has been that it boots faster and runs well, but has different partitions that it wants. For one thing, there is now a backup "system reserved" partition, just as Apple GUID has some volume information blocks and backup and areas that were once optional (and if format erase was not able to, it would not create one) are now mandatory.
Windows 8.1 is req'd, reason a backup should be a big must - is it might overwrite and use another OS's  partition table entries.  Especially when doing UEFI install.
There was something about which linux OS was safe and how they would each add entries in the table, but one would not place nice.  That one had to be done first or not at all.
