Mac Pro not sending video to my DV Camera

Hi,
I have been editing on a PowerMac G5 using FCP 5.1.4 and outputting to tape on my Sony TRV900 MiniDV camera with no problems for over a year.
I have recently bought a Mac Pro, and although I can get footage OFF to camera, the Mac Pro appears not to be sending out any video out through firewire to the camera.
I re-hooked up my G5 and everything works perfectly there - so I guess this rules out the camera or the cable.
View menu > External Video is set to All Frames
Audio/Video Settings, video playback is set to Apple Firewire PAL
I have had both systems side by side and made sure EVERY preference is identical - the only difference is the computer!
I have unplugged every other device so that the camera is the only firewire (or USB) device attached to the computer, and have tried both FW400 ports.
I really don't want to have to lug my heavy computer to an Apple Store for them to look at it...
Has anyone got any clever ideas?
Thanks in advance.
Dom

Well - I've solved the problem.
It seems the Mac Pro firewire bus cant send the correct signal out to my DVCam.
I bought a Sonnet Tango Express PCIe card, it has 2 FW400 ports and 3 USB2 ports, when my DVCam is plugged into this new FW bus, everything works.
I don't know whether this problem is down to MY Mac Pro, or whether all mac Pros will have the same problem. Either way, it seems a bit wrong for Apple to sell a flagship product, ideal for editing, and not have the FW bus work properly.
I now have a working computer, and it's big hassle to cart it off to an Apple store, so I think I'll leave the issue here and not pursue it with Apple.

  • Why would I get a Sudden Motion Sensor error on a Mac Pro (not a laptop)??

Get this error all the time since upgrading to Logic 9.1.4.  Thing is, I have a Mac Pro, not a laptop.
Apple sends me to this page:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1934
Should I disable sudden motion sensor?  Seems silly.  I am recording woth headphones, there's no movement from the computer.   And again, didn't have this error for 3 years and suddenly I get it after upgrading to 9.1.4?

    9.1.4 seems a bit shaky...
That said, you might try disabling "Sleep" for the drive.
As I recall, it's a generic error meaning the computer either isn't getting a response from the drive or that it can't pull data off fast enough.

  • Screen dims randomly with Mac Pro - NOT a Macbook

After upgrading to Mountain Lion, my screen will dim randomly when watching movies or YouTube.  This is on my early 2008 Mac Pro - not a Macbook Pro which seems to have this problem commonly.  I've searched and searched and lots of people have this problem with a Macbook Pro (battery saving feature or something) but there are no options to defeat screen dimming that I can find for a Mac Pro!! Mountain Lion just keeps getting worse and worse!
    HelP!

Hello, thanks for taking the time to help me out!
This is a 2008 MacPro (2x2.8 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon) running Mountain Lion OSX 10.8.4.
I am running two monitors: a HannsG HH281 and a Hewlett PAckard HP w2408h.
When this first was happening back in March 2013, I thought it had something to do with the ambient light sensor on the HP (the HannG doesnt have a light sensor), but it also might have has something to do with the dynamic contrast on the HannsG.  I had shut those features off, and I actually hadn't had this problem in a while and there has been a few Mountain Lion updates since then.
I just tried to reproduce this by turning on/off the dynamic contrast on the Hanns G - did not get the problem
again.  I also just turned the ambient light sensor on for the HP, and again, the problem did not occur.
So it is hard to say if the problem is gone away or not or if it just is not showing itself at the time being?

As being a novice with my Mac Pro computer and Cannon 5D mark 3 camera my issue has arisen while over the last year and half, when down loading into my Photoshop Lightroom 4, my 18,000  photograph were not catalogued correctly, or hardly at all, so now over several months time my photos have apparently been redirected in my libraries and have begun not appearing in their allotted frames next to their number in the library they are in. they also have a small question mark (?) next to the photo space. The frames are blank but indicates that there is a photo there. The majority of photos are blank but about a tenth are seen . i apparently need to retrace where they went but do not know how to get that done . can someone help please?

It would be difficult to tell you where to begin. If you moved photos around to different folders and didn't use Lightroom to move them, that would cause Lightroom to lose track of where they are. You have to remember that your images are not "in" Lightroom. Lightroom simply points to them wherever they are on your computer. All of the location information as well as the changes that you make to your images is stored in the catalog, which is a database. This catalog is central to the operation of Lightroom, and it's essential that you understand how it works and how to make it work for you. For all of those images that have "?" On them, or the folders that have the same, you will have to go through the process of locating them and showing Lightroom where they are located. With 18,000 images, and many of them missing, it might just be easier to start a new catalog and organize things properly from the beginning in that catalog.

  • [URGENT] Mac Pro not booting, Fan error but fans are working.

    Hello,
My server G5 is stuck on grey screen with spinning wheel. I ran the AHT and got the following:
    2FAN/4/8: CPU A INTAKE
All the fans are spinning. I would really really appreciate if I can get any help or advice. I tried searching for this AHT error but could not find anything solid.
This is our main server and its crucial to our organization and I am sweating bullets here.
I reseted memory and unplugged all RAID drives. The three LED on the Logic board are Red, Yellow and Green; Power On, Trickle and Open Firmware respectively.
    Thanks for any help.

Just to say that usually it helps to include the make/model of RAID controllers, whether it is hardware RAID or not. The Mac Pro Apple RAID card IS a PITA and is particular sometimes about drives and its battery reconditioning as well as mounting drives and time to create a hardware RAID5.
When a drive causes trouble it is often though not always because of directory being damaged and OS X can't even inspect to see if there is a system or if it can be mounted.
And because the G5 normally only has two SATA drives, to use three requires a bracket or something else to add drives, like Sonnet G5 Jive. And then a PCI SATA controller with internal ports. But that is just your average SATA controller.
If it was a Mac Pro the thread could and should have been moved to another forum. And you still refer to this as a Mac Pro, not PowerMac. Which leads me to wonder.
Molex y-splitters as needed in a G5 but three yrs for a set of drives, I'd say they were due for backup + erase/initialize and restore. Hopefully you kept them in shape with Disk Warrior during that time (don't rely on just Apple First Aid to maintain and repair/rebuild directories).

  • How to specify which Ethernet port on a Mac Pro to send an Ethernet packet

    Hi,
I am doing some development on a Mac Pro. The Mac Pro has two Ethernet ports on the rear: Ethernet 1 and Ethernet 2.
I want to specify which of these ports I send a UDP Ethernet packet from.
In my code I currently create a socket and send data through this. This works fine, but the data (packet) always seems to come out of Ethernet port 1 on the rear of the Mac Pro.
So, how / where do I set in my code which port (Ethernet 1 or Ethernet 2) on the back of the Mac Pro to send my packet out of?
    Cheers!

  • Mac mail on Macbook pro not sending email suddenly

    OS X 10.6.8
Mac mail was working up to yesterday.
NO changes to the box or mail.
Mail will receive but not send mail; alerts with an smtp error.
    Installed Thunderbird, same problem.
Mac mail on an iMac, works fine.
Thunderbird on Win Vista works fine.
pop and smtp settings are identical on all boxes.
Turned off the firewall on the laptop - no joy
Searched and have killed/rebuilt the keychain several times.
    Confirmed password is correct
I have not killed and recreated the mail account; if that actually works, let me know and I'll try again.
I have rebuilt the mailbox - no joy.
Ran the diagnostics and green lights on both pop and smtp so it seems that logins are working, just can't send mail.
Any suggestions?  Is there any reason that mail would stop working on the laptop but continue working on the desktop?  I'm not a Mac guy so I've run out of options and any pointers would be appreciated.

"Note all the settings on the functional Mac and then transfer them to the non-functional one."
That'd be the problem.  I've checked and double checked the settings/configuration; even went over them with my wife reading one set and me the other - everything matches.  So, I'm making the assumption that we're missing the forest for the trees and it's something totally stupid like a swapped set of letters or an L for an I kind of thing.  In order to totally eliminate these kinds of S.U.E.'s, I'd like to move a copy of the files that are the actual config from the working machine to the non-functional machine.
Since OSX is basically BSD, I'm kind of making the assumption that all the important stuff is stored in config files; I just have not been able to figure out which files and where they live.
Keep in mind that the laptop went toes up without anyone making any changes so I'm not totally convinced the issue is a typo.  I've searched for other reasons a system would stop sending mail and am not getting any hits that are meaningful.  If anyone has any ideas, let me know.
    TIA

  • Mac Pro not booting from CD's using 'C'

All of a sudden I am unable to boot from a CD. Every disk that I try will not boot. The CD drive will try to read for 5 minutes, then crash with that different language please restart your computer crash screen. I've tried DISKWARRIOR and MacOS X Leopard. They will not boot. I've cleaned the disks and reset the PRAM, but still won't work. All external connections are unplugged.
3 months ago, it was working perfectly, I even did a clean install of Leopard. The only thing that was changed in my system, was an upgrade to the NVIDIA GeForce 88GT, but why would using a different video card force a crash during a CD boot?
Otherwise, my MacPro is working perfectly and the disk has no errors. I can read, write, install apps and run movies on the CD ROM drives. but cannot boot

Recently, I bought diskwarrior but it doesn't boot. I tried the Leopard install to test it out. That doesn't work, then I called Alsof and they said it should boot on my current system.
DiskWarrior will not boot on a Mac Pro (Early 2008).
"All Mac models meeting the system requirements for DiskWarrior *except the new Mac Pro and Xserve models introduced on 01/08/2008, the MacBook Air introduced on 01/15/2008, the MacBook/MacBook Pro models introduced on 02/26/2008 and the iMac models introduced on 04/28/2008* can be started from the CD."
    <http://www.alsoft.com/DiskWarrior/support.html>
If you want to use DiskWarrior, you need to put it on another drive or partition containing OSX 10.5.4
Therefore, all of sudden nothing boots. Like I said, the only change I did was to replace the video card.
That's why the Leopard DVD won't boot. The Leopard DVD that came with the computer doesn't have drivers for the new graphics card. If you still have the old card, install it, install Leopard, update to 10.5.4, then put in the new graphics card.

  • Questions about buying a new Mac Pro for 4k video editing.

    Hi everyone,
I'm currently looking into buying a new mac pro and I have a few questions. I'm a filmmaker/freelance editor looking to get a system that can handle any/at least most 4k formats that I might throw at it, and will hopefully last me around 7 years or so, like my last mac pro has. I've saved up about $5,300 and am becoming more obsessed with getting it asap, but am willing to wait a bit and save up more if necessary. I also play the occasional elder scrolls or civilization game, and might run windows on the new system as well. So here are my questions:
    1. I've read rumors that a newer build could be released this year, with newer processors and graphics cards. Is there anything to point to when? I tend to buy things a month before a newer version is released, and I'd like to prevent myself from doing it this time around..
Here's the Build I'm looking at:
    6 core
    2 D700s
base ram to be upgraded myself to 32Gb (2x16Gb cards leaving 2 slots empty to expand to 64Gb later)
    512Gb-1Tb internal hd
    2. Should I be considering the 8 core? I'm not too excited about the additional $1500, but I want a system that will last.
    3. Is getting the two 16Gb chips of ram and leaving two slots empty a bad idea?
    4. I currently work with FCP studio 2 and love it. Not sure whether to go with FCP X, or adobe. Any thoughts?
    5. I'm not finding many deals for cheaper ram and hard drives. OWC's prices seem to be comparable to Mac's. I want to do the ram so I have room to upgrade to 64Gb later, but are there any hard drives out there that would make it worth upgrading it myself?
I appreciate any insights you might have. I plan on getting a decent raid and 4k monitor in the next year or so, but for now just want a base system that will keep me editing and will be ready for 4k when I take that next step.

The late 2013 Mc Pro uses Intel Xeon ECC processors (error correction), and as far as I know Intel has not announced any newer Intel Xeon processors than those in the late 2013 Mac Pro.  I would not expect to see an update to the 2013 Mac Pro until the end of 2015 at the earliest and probably later than that.
If time is not an issue, then you should be quite happy with the 6 core 2013 Mac Pro.  It will do an excellent job with 4K video footage. And, yes, I would suggest getting the best raid system you can afford.  That is actually more important than processor speed since I/O is frequently the bottleneck when doing multi camera video or 4K video.
I have the latest version of Adobe's Premiere Pro 2014  CC installed on my late 2013 Mac Pro and i have used it a bit without problems.  However, I find it much much slower to edit with than FCP X.  Also be advised that if you Google you will find several individuals on the Adobe Forums who purchased the late 2013 Mac Pro and have not been able to use it with Premiere Pro CC because of either a hardware incompatibility or software issues between Premiere Pro CC and BMD's Resolve.  It is quite possible that I have not experienced these problems because I have not made very demanding projects with Premiere Pro CC on my 2013 Mac Pro.
I strongly recommend FCP X.  Apple released FCP X before it was ready, and many early users were unwilling to take the time to learn how to use this very different NLE which is not track based.  Apple has over the last 3 years since FCP X was released, issued more than 10 updates (all free), and the program is stable and blazingly fast.  I urge you to check out the FCP X training offered by Ripple Training and/or Larry Jordan. Both are inexpensive, and worth every cent.  Watch their training videos and you will be up to speed in FCP X in no time at all, and you will wish you had switched a long time ago.
If you can afford the 1 TB of PCie internal flash storage on your Mac Pro, then by all means get it.  For me 1TB is well worth the cost.
As far as editing 4K video, the format of the video will be important to the ease of editing.  For example, I am able to edit in its native format (XVAC S) several streams of 4K video form my Sony FDR-AX100 with no problems.  If I were editing Sony's XVAC format used in their professional 4K cameras, that might pose a problem that would require transcoding.  Similarly for other 4K formats. XVAC S is an easy format to edit natively because it is essentially a high bit rate h.264 format.
Best of luck on whatever you decide to do, and happy editing.
    Tom

  • Is there a fix for MAC Pro with Dual video cards that randomly logs off and on?

From my readings on the Internet this seems to be a know problem.  That even furthers my frustrations with the latest OS X upgrades.  So far on both my MACBOOK PRO and my MAC PRO it has been a major downgrade as both systems are no longer stable.  Enough with my complaints...
Is there any plan to address this problem with the MAC PRO?  I can't believe 10.8.1 didn't fix it.  More can be read on it at:
    http://jvm-technology.blogspot.com/2012/08/mac-pro-users-experiencing-random-log .html
Does anyone have work around to use dual screen monitors with the system?  I have two video cards, the article says to remove one.  Has this worked for anyone?  Can I use dual screens with the one video card.  Before I go messing around with these type of things I just want to be sure that this is a real fix.  For the price of the cards and the system I really can't believe apple has this issue in the first place and has not fixed it.

Self-hosted add-ons have to be fixed for every new version of Firefox. Two to 6 months for updating an add-on is ridiculous for a program which has a new version release every '''6 weeks'''. If that extension was hosted at the official Add-ons website, Mozilla would take take care of "bumping" that extension, as long as it keeps working, for every new version of Firefox, as the new version is released.
See this thread from yesterday, I posted instructions about how to "bump" that extension for Firefox 7.<br />
    https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/questions/884484
You can also use this extension to "bump" an already installed extension for compatibility with the currently installed version of Firefox. <br />
