Mac Pro Notebook to see, read & write to PC Windows 7 External Hard Disk NTFS

Hi
I have a Windows 7 PC desktop with an external hard disk coonected to it by USB formatted as NTFS. Is is connected by cable to a wireless router.
I now also have a Macbook Pro.
I would like to work on jpg and Raw files on the External Hard Disk both via the desktop (as I currently do) and also now via the Macbook using Photoshop Elements which exists on both.
Is there a way that the Macbook can read the external drive and read and write the same files as the pc without purchasing a Macdrive and reformatting the External Drive?
Thank you
Regards
CGJ

Hi everyone
I've managed to work out how to share my desktop and the external drive attached to it via wireless so my Macbook Pro can see, open, and edit and save photo files via Photoshop Elements.
I can also then view and edit them through the Windows PC - though they say some properties are missing this I can live with.
Therefore no re-formatting needed, and no downloads either.
Many thanks
Regards

how do i change read/write permissions for an external hard drive?

If, on the otherhand, you are trying to write to a drive that is formatted NTFS (for Windows), and can't.
    You have two choices...
    1. Reformat the drive. Either Mac OS format, if you are using this only on your Mac. Or ExFAT, or FAT 32 if you intend to use it on both a Mac OS computer and a Windows unit. note: ExFAT is not suported by XP.
    2. Install one of the drivers necessary for the Mac to write to a NTFS volume. Unless you want the experience of having the support for this being one that is sporadic, avoid this. I used to be a strong proponent of NTFS-3G, until I started having the problems with Lion, that many users warned us about. Go this route only if you find you must use NTFS on your drive. Paragon and Tuxtera are the sources for these.

  • My Macbook Pro mid 2012 is not reading/connecting to my (working)external hard disk(also not showing in disk utility)

I connected my 500GB Storjet external hard drive to my mac(Mountain Lion) http://in.transcend-info.com/products/Catlist.asp?modno=325 but it is not connecting to it. Disk Utility is also not showing it. and the hard disk is working... My PS3, My Sony TV and my other laptop(win7) is detecting it... Also whenever it gets connected a blue light blinks, but It doesnt for mac. I have tried reformatting to both FAT32 and NTFS... Please help..
Also I sorta screwed my Mac so I had to do the internet recovery thing and only after that such problems occured, it was working fine before. So it installed Lion first and then Mountain Lion. It wasn't working on any of the OS.

Power down the Mac, Full power off. Connect the drive using the Y cable and then turn the Mac back on.
If it still doesn't show in at least Disk Utility then start checking your USB ports to see if both are working properly. Just plug in a USB thumb drive and that should show in both Finder and Disk Utility. If one of the ports isn't seeing the thumb drive then that port is bad and the system needs to be services by Apple.

  • I am using a Mac Book Pro. Now I am trying to read a LaCie 1 TB external hard disk. The MacBook Pro hangs while reading the LaCie external hard disk.

I am using a MacBook Pro. I have my movies stored on a Lacie 1 TB external USB harddrive. (42 Movies in HD - 538 Gb in use). When I try to read the LaCie external drive, my MacBook Pro is "hanging". Only a "hard reboot" helps to get my MacBook Pro up and running again. The MacBook Pro starts to read the drive, but half way he "stucks". I can read the LaCie drive without any problem om my windows machines, so the LaCie drive is O.K. Anyone familiar with this problem?

The drive is formatted NFTS, otherwise the drive can not handle large files under Windows. And yes, I can see the drive in Disk Utility.
I can even see the files (partly) untill my system is hanging.

  • Cant write/edit data on my external hard disk! Help please!~~

Okay guys, currently, i'm using Tiger version 10.4.11. My problem is that i cant edit data or write data to any external hard disks, like the maxtor One Touch and so on. Only thing i can do is to extract the data from the disks. I have tried to write on multiple hard disks but in all my attempts i have failed. i've tried to edit my network settings, but no results.
So, i seek help from anyone out here!

    Hello, yea.. thanks man =)
Basically, its a shared hard disk between my macbook and a windows PC. So i kinda use the PC to write all my backups and data on the hard disk.
I have quite a few hard disk and they all have the same issue. It says 'The item 'file x'cannot be moved because 'my hard disk' cannot be modified.'I've used the software provided from the hard disk manufacturer, Maxtor/Seagate, to reformat the brand new portable hard disk which i bought yesterday.
Its connected via USB, same as all the other ones i have.
eh. the get info for it says
    Kind: Volume
    Created: --
    Modified: Thursday, 23 Aprl 2009 3:24AM
    Format: Windows NT Filesystem
    Capacity: 232.88 GB
    Available: 232.57 GB
Ownerships & Permissions: You can only read.
erm... its a portable drive which i carry around, so i guess its not a network drive? and how doi determine the network settings? Sorry man.. not really good at these =x

  • I have the latest Mac Air 13" and I have a Seagate 500MB external hard disk I cant copy or Cut any files on the hard disk and I cant even delete any files. I have the settings as Read and Write in the get info tab. Please help

I have the latest Mac Air 13" and I have a Seagate 500MB external hard disk I cant copy or Cut any files on the hard disk and I cant even delete any files. I have the settings as Read and Write in the get info tab. Please helpand also note that my hard drive was formatted on a Windows 7 Laptop.

thats the problem, its in MSDos (Fat) or NTFS for Windows.
    Options.....
    1. offload all that data on the HD onto your PC, THEN format the HD in EXFAT for use on BOTH PC and Mac for read/write.....then reload all (or as you need) that data back onto the HD
    2. get another HD, and format it for Mac OSX extended journaled.
    FAT32 (File Allocation Table)
Read/Write FAT32 from both native Windows and native Mac OS X.
    Maximum file size: 4GB.
    Maximum volume size: 2TB
You can use this format if you share the drive between Mac OS X and Windows computers and have no files larger than 4GB.
    NTFS (Windows NT File System)
    Read/Write NTFS from native Windows.
Read only NTFS from native Mac OS X
To Read/Write/Format NTFS from Mac OS X, here are some alternatives:
For Mac OS X 10.4 or later (32 or 64-bit), install Paragon (approx $20) (Best Choice for Lion)
Native NTFS support can be enabled in Snow Leopard and Lion, but is not advisable, due to instability.
AirPort Extreme (802.11n) and Time Capsule do not support NTFS
    Maximum file size: 16 TB
    Maximum volume size: 256TB
You can use this format if you routinely share a drive with multiple Windows systems.
HFS+     ((((MAC FORMAT)))  (Hierarchical File System, a.k.a. Mac OS Extended (Journaled) Don't use case-sensitive)
    Read/Write HFS+ from native Mac OS X
Required for Time Machine or Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper! backups of Mac internal hard drive.
To Read HFS+ (but not Write) from Windows, Install HFSExplorer
    Maximum file size: 8EiB
    Maximum volume size: 8EiB
You can use this format if you only use the drive with Mac OS X, or use it for backups of your Mac OS X internal drive, or if you only share it with one Windows PC (with MacDrive installed on the PC)
EXFAT (FAT64)    ------Can read/write from both PC and Mac
Supported in Mac OS X only in 10.6.5 or later.
Not all Windows versions support exFAT.
    exFAT (Extended File Allocation Table)
AirPort Extreme (802.11n) and Time Capsule do not support exFAT
    Maximum file size: 16 EiB
    Maximum volume size: 64 ZiB
You can use this format if it is supported by all computers with which you intend to share the drive.  See "disadvantages" for details.

  • Mac Pro doesn't see third monitor

    Guys:
My Mac Pro doesn't see all three of the monitors that I have hooked up...what am I doing wrong?
I previously came to you for your expert advice about video cards...I went and upgraded my Radeon 4870 which was running two monitors (Eizo and NEC) to a ATI Radeon 5870 in order to run three monitors (my new Cintiq)
When the Cintiq was not hooked up yet, the Mac saw the Eizo and NEC. When I connected the Cintiq...the Cintiq and the NEC show up but not the Eizo.
I went and upgraded the video card so I could run all three monitors because I didn't want to plug and unplug the Cintiq whenever I needed it. I believe I did my due diligence as far as research was concerned to ensure this would all work together...I'll be pretty bummed if this configuration can't do three monitors not to mention the financial cost.
Any help would be appreciated...as always.
    Thanks!

I read your links, if I understand correctly, it may work with Dual Link DVI adapters?
    My monitor connections are:
Eizo: DVI with the cord that came with the monitor (unsure if DVI single or dual link)
    NEC: VGA to mini display
Cintiq: DVI to mini display (think it is a single link DVI)
Thanks!...so what do I need to go buy?
Here's a partial answer (need more info to answer about single vs. dual link, more about that later).
In the Mac Pro (Mid 2010)... document I referenced above there's a key note:
Note: The Apple Mini DisplayPort to Dual-Link DVI adaptor and Apple Mini DisplayPort to VGA adaptor are considered active adaptors.
So if you get the apple mini-displayport to VGA adaptor that will count as one of the active adaptors.  I use one of those incidentially but I am not sure but it may be that all mini-displayport to VGA adaptors are consider "active".
Now for the single vs. dual link DVI question.  It depends on the max resolution of those monitors (or the max you want to run them at).  Single link DVI has a max resolution of 1920 x 1200, while dual link DVI can display a resolution of 2560 x 1600.  So that's why I cannot answer this part of your question (you didn't specify the max resolution).  If you only need single link active adaptors they will certainly be a lot cheaper than dual link.
Also note, you should only need two active adaptors on the card to support 3 monitors.  So only one of the remaining connections needs to be an active adaptor.  The other can be passive (much cheaper).

    hi

  • Autocad Design on Mac Pro Notebook ?

    Hi,
I am Using Apple Mac Pro notebook. I want o view Autocad files only on MAC.
is any default software i can use in MAC ?
    pls suggest.

What version of AutoCad are you using? The reason I ask is because if it's a slightly older version it may run fine on XP which can be easily loaded into a virtual machine and run on top of OS X.
You can also do that with Win 7 but you need a good amount of RAM as both Lion & 7 use a lot of it.
But if your set on Boot Camp and dual booting then use Boot camp Assistant found in the Utilities folder in Applications. You can go to the Apple website, Support and get the user guide for boot camp and once you start the BC assistant it will download Windows Support software, Drivers, and a copy of the user guide is included.
If you have any real problems using BC your best place to post is in the Apple Boot Camp forum.
    NOTE:
Once you use Boot Camp and install Win 7 you can not partition your hard drive any further, easily, or one or the other or both OSs won't boot anymore. So make sure you allocate enough space for both OSs.
    Make sure you backup regularly.
    Good Luck and best wishes

  • How do I copy a home made HD video file (MP4 codec) of 10 GB from an external hard disk to my Mac Book Pro? Thanks

How do I copy a home made HD video file (MP4 codec) of >10 GB from an external hard disk to my Mac Book Pro? Thanks

I will never know if the problem was one of transfer or format compatibility.  The movie would not copy from one external hard diask to another, both attached to my MAC. But when the movie (which was in mpg by the way) was downloaded directly (without any other intermediary) into my external disk from the computer (a PC) where the movie was originated, the file did copy. And when I attached that external hard disk to my MAC, i could see it  using the MPEC streamclip app.
    Thank you anyway!

Besides checking the "Disk Utility" - How did you connect the drive the Mac Mini?
Sometimes, some of the external drive might need "extra" juice to make it "run"
I found through "USB hub" would affect the issue, as well, my "home build" USB external drive has two USB connectors - one for data, one for extra power
I need to make sure both connected in order to get it going.
Some other market USB external drives do not need the extra juice - therefore, try other USB port to see if it runs.
Or - maybe the external drive is a "lemon" ??

    1) In 'ExFAT' format, is there a limitation on the file size?
    Not one that will matter.
    2) Is 'MAC OS Extended' format, only for MAC computers?
    Yes, only for Mac
    3) What are those (a) journaled (b) Encrypted & (c) Case-sensitive? or when to use those?
    Again, only for Mac.
