Mac Pro & Nvidia Quadro GPU

Will the 2013 incarnation of the Mac Pro have an available Nvidia Quadro professional level GPU as one of its configurations for purchase from Apple?
Charles Daley

I didn't think the Mac Pro came with a Quadro GPU as part of any of its set ups. I thought even on the Mac Pro they were using GeForce GPUs. They are good from what I can read and gather from forums but a PDF from Nvidia compared and contrasted the Quadro vs. GeForce and on graphic intense programs like Maya and 3DS Max alot of the features that were part of the program would not operate to there fullest with the GeForce. Only the Quadro would allow you to use 100% of the capabilities the program has to offer. Or does anyone have other experiences with using these programs with a top level GeForce chip, maybe something like Geforce GTX 680 MX? (I think that is the top level GPU on the new 27" iMac?)

  • Early 2008 Mac Pro, NVIDIA Quadro 5600, and Adobe CS5 - HELP!!!

Hello, I am currently pulling my hair out over my GPU situation. I'm eagerly awaiting the ship date for CS5, but I'm concerned about one of its system requirements, where it says an OpenGL capable card must be supported for the software to work.
So I went to their handy chart explaining which cards are supported, and mine, the Quadro FX 5600, is not listed on the Mac side. It is however listed on the Windows side.
But when I bought my Mac Pro, the 5600 was being offered by Apple, they're the ones who installed it for me! Haven't had a problem in CS4, but now I'm afraid I won't see the significant boost in power Adobe is promising from CS5.
When I called Adobe about it, I was on the phone for more than 45 minutes, talking to people in India who I even got to admit don't actually use the software, and ultimately told me they simply couldn't answer the question.
So if anyone could advise me wether or not my Early 2008 Mac Pro with Quadro FX 5600 graphics card will support OpenGL in After Effects CS5, I'd be eternally grateful.
    Thanks so much!

I have always assumed there would be no problem. You can download from
    http://www.realtech-vr.com/glview/download.html
the OpenGL Extensions Viewer, which, when launched DIRECTLY TESTS with which versions of the OpenGL standard your card is compatible. (Right now there appear to be download problems with the URL above (a 421 FTP error: server is limiting available connections.)
I'm also hoping this indicates no problems with CS5!
    Hope this helps.

  • Buying a 1st Gen Mac Pro nVidia GeForce 8800 GT 512MB from Applemacanix...

    _*Hi to All:_*
_First of all thanks for taking the time to read my post._

    Thanks in advance

Applemecanix are the Microsoft of card flashers.
There are at least 5 other flashers on Ebay who will sell you the EXACT same card, with the EXACT same ROM flashed on it for around $100 less.
For that matter, a little time on MacRumours and you could figure out how to make one yourself for $200 less.
However, if you have money to burn, by all means give it to them.

  • Support for new Nvidia Quadro gpu?

When support for new Nvidia Quadro gpu? For example Nvida Quadro K2200 and K4200
    Thk

What do you mean when you say "support"? All of After Effects OpenGL features already work on those cards.
The only thing that isn't supported on those cards is GPU acceleration of the ray-traced 3D renderer, which is an obsolete and almost entirely irrelevant feature. No more GPUs will ever be added to the list of cards supported for that feature.

  • Mac Pro w/ Quadro FX 4500 not sending 1080p signal

    Hi,
I've got a Mac Pro with an nVidia Quadro FX 4500 video card and I'm having a lot of difficulty getting OS X to send a 1080p signal to my high-end Sanyo PLV-HD10 projector via DVI. When I say 1080p, I mean 1920x1080 in progressive (non-interlaced) mode.
The trouble is OS X detects the projector as "LCD Monitor" and under "Displays" in System Preferences i'm given a maximum resolution of 1920x1080 INTERLACED, which is very close to, but not exactly what I want. I need this thing to send a non-interlaced signal to the projector, and I just can't figure out how to make OS X do that. I've tried using 3rd party hacks like "SwitchresX" and "DisplayConfigX" - with no success. BTW, I am fully up to date on "Software Update" and this is a clean install of OS X 10.4.8 (just got the machine a week ago).
I called Sanyo for support and they couldn't help me, because they don't make any software/drivers for their devices. They asked me to take the matter up with Apple.
The funny thing is, I've got Boot Camp running on this Mac Pro, and Windows XP Pro (SP2) is able to detect the Sanyo projector AND send a full 1080p signal to it. This tells me the hardware is fully capable of doing what I need it to do... The problem is OS X isn't detecting the projector correctly, and so it's not letting me push the correct resolution to it.
I'm not at all against hacks, via Terminal or otherwise, to get this working. ANY help is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Mac Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

You could mention that Nvidia is coming out with an FX 4800, along with GTX 285.
    http://www.nvidia.com/object/productquadro_fx_4800_for_macus.html
The GTX 285 seems to still be under wraps but expected to come out in June. And nothing happens exactly when it's suppose to let alone on time.
Barefeats has most of the test comparisions but even the FX4800 hasn't seen the light of day. A) needs more work and new drivers and OS revision? is really being aimed at something for OpenCL to exploit perhaps.

  • 2014 Macbook Pro Nvidia 750m GPU Kernel Panics

    Hello everyone,
After a long battle w a Mac Pro and Davinci Resolve, I moved to a 2014 15.4 Macbook Pro Retina i7 2.7ghz with Nvidia 750m and Intel Iris (dual gfx). Any time I do anything strenuous, such as video editing or color correction, the laptop heats up to between 80 and 100c, the case becomes almost too hot to touch and it eventually kernel panics with the following, along always a GPU based panic. I just performed a PRAM reset w Apple Tech support, but that isnt helping the heat \ kernel panic issue. It occurs after mere minutes in Adobe Premiere Pro, Davinci Resolve, or anything else GPU accelerated. I already confirmed that auto switching was enabled, but I also disabled it to try without success.
Any suggestions? This laptop is 14 days old, so I now need to deal w repairs :/ Does this kernel panic indicate a GPU or GPU VRAM issue? I tested my system RAM with Rember and it passed, also passed Apple's basic HW test.
    Huge thanks!

  • Question about Mac Pro and Adding GPU's

I am a recent convert from PC and I had a Dell system that had two Nvidia Cards in it, but I could not use each one to run one monitor because it was SLI and it could only clone my screen and not extend it. So I had to plug both monitors into one card, and I basically paid for one card that I never really used since I wanted two monitors.
I have two monitors hooked to my new Mac Pro, and my question is if I put in another Nvidia GT120 will each GPU run one monitor, and will they run as one big desktop just they way I have it set up now. Plus is there any benefit to having the dual GPU? I work on documentary videos and I use Adobe Creative Suite a lot. Will having the dual GPU speed up things like After Effects and Premiere. I know snow Leopard will help some, but in the mean time will an extra GPU help any?

As Hatter said, you can drive 2 monitors from 1 video card on the Mac. SLI/Crossfire doesn't work under OSX, so unless you need to run more than 2 monitors, there's no need to have more than 1 video card...
And I wouldn't say you got no use out of the 2nd video card in your dell. If you were gaming at all, you were probably getting better performance using the SLI than you would have gotten with just 1 card.
So, yes, under OSX, you can drive 2 monitors with the 1 card and it will let you either clone the desktop on to both displays (both show the same thing) OR stretch the display so the desktop stretches across both displays...
I'll be doing this with my mac pro to drive 3 monitors (using a 2nd video card)... Which should give me a HUGE desktop (I can't describe how much nicer it is to have tons of desktop space when programming or doing video editing...)

  • Expansion - Mac Pro, Nvidia, Graphics Cards, 3d, CUDA

    Hello,
Are there any plans to make a Mac that is expandable and upgradable with regards to graphics cards? Specifically Nvidia cards. We are doing more and more 3d work and require Nvidia graphics cards for GPU rendering with CUDA. For doing any 3d work CUDA is a MUST. Even on the fastest CPU's, it's the difference between a 1976 Pinto, and a 2014 Lamborghini Aventador when it comes to rendering.
Thunderbolt expansion doesn't seem to be a possibility... While technically this should work, there is currently no support for graphics cards in external Thunderbolt chassis (to my knowledge)... and there are no drivers (nor are there plans to make any as far as I know) for Nvidia graphics cards for Mac's. I can only assume it is because there doesn't seem to be any way to expand these new Mac Pro's.
Without the ability to expand for these graphics cards, we (I and the company that I work for) are only left with a few options (as I see it).
    1)     Switch to Windows (Really?)
    2)     Linux
    3)     Create a render farm from old computers. (Not Ideal for several reasons, not the least of which is the ability to preview before final render.)
We are approaching the time for equipment upgrades, and we simply can't justifiy spending that amount of money for a computer that frankly will not do what we need it to do. Especially since a comparable PC at a third of the price, will.
Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Since silence is the only thing you get from apple on this subject here is a little help:http://www.tonymacx86.com/416-building-customac-buyer-s-guide-march-2014.html
This ongoing feud between adobe and apple leaves us, the users in a very bad position. We should have a choice.

  • Active Stereo on Mac Pro/ NVIDIA FX4500

    Hi all,
We just got a Quad 3 GHZ with an FX4500. We want to get active stereo (shutter glasses sync'ed to the computer via the 3 pin connector...).
To make a long story short, we can get correct output on Windows in the Mac Pro but nothing like it in OSX. We are trying different software packages in both systems but at this point I am more inclined to think it is a driver bug.
In the windows (and even Linux) you can install the Nvidia driver and play around with different settings. It is known that you don't get active stereo until you activate quadbuffer and set the refresh rate to at least 100Hz. Why can't you set those parameters in OSX? Are they supposed to be active by default? Has anybody been able to get active stereo on a similar configuration?
    Thanks!

I have gotten the macpro quad 2.66 + fx4500 graphics card to work with crystaleyes (RealD) shutter glasses. I am using the program macPymol.
The refresh rate settings on your CRT monitor are critical and the default settings available (via apple display preferences) are not fine tunable. We used the program DisplayConfigX (http://www.3dexpress.de/) to generate custom horizontal and vertical refresh rate settings for our monitor. The refresh rate settings we used were as per suggestions at http://pymol.sourceforge.net/stereo3d.html. Notice that relatively small differences in refresh rates will put you out of the sweet spot and thus no stereo. Check the two above web pages, they saved me much frustration!
Note: Once you run DisplayConfigX (and yes it does run fine on intel macs) you will be able to pick your new refresh rate settings from inside apples display preferences as per normal procedure.
Note: I am currently using 1000s of colors. I do not know if this matters; I will try millions of colors soon.
Finally, I found that that the monitor you are doing stereograpjics from needs to be your main monitor. Thus if you are running dual monitors (e.g., LCD + CRT), you need to select your CRT monitor to the main monitor (systemprefs/displays/arrangement/(drag the "title bar" to the correct "display")). I often have to reboot after switching main monitors like this in order to get the stereo to sync correctly. Perhaps some more fine tuning of the refresh rate will nullify this last step.
I agree with others, it should not be this hard. Hopefully Apple will beef up the driver (if that is in fact the problem).
    Hope this helps.
    Cheers.

  • Late 2013 Mac Pro freezes constantly - GPU Hang

I've been having a very consistently recurring problem with my brand new Mac Pro freezing. I am unable to predictably reproduce the problem, unfortunately, which makes it hard to solve or troubleshot from the get go. Basically every time I boot up I get a full freeze of the machine anywhere from within the first 10 minutes to an hour of boot up... somewhere in that window usually. Whatever applications are open will freeze, including system OS and usually only the mouse will be able to move but I will not be able to click on anything or Force Quit or restart. My only option is to hard reboot by holding down the power button for several seconds.
It doesn't seem to be isolated to occurring with any one application being open. I use my computer primarily for audio recording and editing. I use Avid Pro Tools HD 11.2. It's a version of their software supported to run on Mavericks 10.9.3 which is what I am running. I use it with their HD Native Thunderbolt hardware. Other than a few drivers installed to run audio and MIDI interfaces connected to the machine, I don't have much else installed on the computer yet. I do have a few 3rd party audio plugins installed, however, these problems were occurring before I installed much of anything on the machine.
I've checked Console each time I have the freeze ups and scroll to the log at the time it occurred. Almost every time without fail I get basically the following message in the Console log:

It's almost always saying something about a "GPU Hang" at the time of freeze up. I don't know much about what the possible problem could be but some initial research led me to believe it was graphics card related. I thought that because I was running two monitors perhaps the connections there were fouling up somehow. I am running two identical monitors simultaneously. One runs off a regular HDMI cable. The other was via a 3rd party Mini DisplayPort to DVI adapter. I thought perhaps the non-Apple branded adapter I was using could be the culprit? The Apple Store (of course) agreed and sold me the Apple DVI to mini DisplayPort adapter. I swapped it out but it did not solve my issue. Still having the freezes. Sometimes after the freeze happens I'll also get a pop up warning that my external hard drive connected via USB was ejected improperly, even though I hadn't touched anything?? The whole thing goes haywire.
It's been doing this for a few months now. I've contacted Apple Care and spent an hour on the phone with them which resulted in making an appointment at a local Apple Store with a Genius. This was after they recommended that I reset both the SMC and the PRAM on the machine, neither of which solved the issue either. I took the machine in and they kept it for 48 hours to do a full stress test to see if they could determine the issue. No problems were found. They gave me the computer back and could not reproduce my problem.
The problem still exists. So that's why I'm writing on here, out of desperation because I have a brand new Mac Pro, under warranty, that is essentially useless. I have a follow up call into Apple Care to see what my next steps are but I haven't gotten a call back.
The only next steps I can imagine are to possibly update to Mavericks 10.9.4 to see if that might help even though Pro Tools is not yet supported by that OSX version yet. Or do a full clean re-install of OSX and all software on the computer (yikes!).
Or Apple needs to swap me a new machine. This is unacceptable.
    Anyone else having this issue??

  • Early 2008 Mac Pro + nVidia 8800: Never going to work?

This forum is littered with threads about early 2008 Mac Pros with the nVidia 8800 card - none of them positive.
I was unfortunate enough to wait for Apple to release such a machine and buy it. Graphics performance is dire given the hardware available. The machine routinely crashes with the window manager hang problem (the user interface just locks up, yet network services etc. still work), in the way familiar to anyone blighted by this particular bug; just run the Folding@Home client on your machine if you want to experience the joy. Or screensavers, sometimes, so I've had to turn those off. And I've had to turn off monitor power saving too, because I too suffer from the 'monitors sometimes don't wake up' bug. And of course I can't sleep the machine either, because firmware upgrade or not, it's still not reliable. And after all this, still the machine crashes.
SSH to the machine; try to restart cleanly; even 'sudo reboot' won't restart it. Apple have achieved something I've never seen out of any Unix or Unix-like operating system, ever; the kernel is unable to kill its own processes.
There have been no indications from Apple that I've seen on these forums over several weeks that the problem is even being acknowledged, let alone tackled. Latest reports indicate that even the 1st gen Mac Pro owners are suffering if they install the 8800.
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1460752&tstart=0
My machine rarely makes it through the day without a forced reboot due to the window manager hanging. I can't do any work on it. I can't rely on it. I can't enjoy it. I can't even use it for web browsing without fear of it hanging.
There seem to be no facts about this at all. So all I can ask for is opinions. Does anyone have any offering of hope that early 2008 Mac Pros might ever work properly with 8800 cards? Y'know, little things, like actually being able to handle graphics? Or sleeping the monitors? Or, heaven forbid, sleeping the whole machine? Or should I just send it back as unfit for purpose?
    Yours, tired and exasperated... :-/

I posted this in some other blog (forum), I should have posted this here also but I hope this gives you and all with these problems hope!! I also ran some fish tank test some else posted to get the folding problem to happen and I can not get it to happen at all now, and since my 8800 went in I get NO LOCKUPS, SCREEN FREEZES, shaky blurry video when I boot, so far NOTHING, IT JUST WORKS!!!!!!!!
Now that I think about it the person who said to use the fish tank program had a bad 8800 and maybe you do also!! here is the link to that:

I purchased my first mac pro early 08 2 months ago (amazon.com).
2 quad core 2.8's, 2 gig apple 4 gig OWC total 6 gig ram,2-WD raptors (1st mac 2nd boot camp winxp 32 bit), apple care.
I had all my problems with the ATI card (I always purchased ATI, never Nvidia, for all the PC's I built) a couple of times I bought the first ones out, these had all kinds of problems until good drivers that actually worked were released (usually 6-12 months after the release of the card).
So I try not to buy routers, graphic cards, etc.. for at least 6-12 months, but back to my 2600 card!!
When I received my mac the graphics would freeze, I did a lot of online reading only to find out the ATI 2600 was the problem, the cure was to hook up 2 monitors to the card (and that worked!!).
Then they came out with the firmware update, now my main monitor would after 2 days on a reboot be scambled (samsung syncmaster 213t, NEVER had ANY problem with it before on any PC I had, so I knew it was not the monitor) to fix the problem I had to either turn power off to the syncmaster or resetting PRAM (worked for a couple more days, then the same problem).
I called apple and they sent a tech out within days to replace the ATI card, the replacement did the same thing after a couple of days, so I called Apple back and they took a bunch of info from my computer (BTW not much at all loaded in the mac side) and said to call back in a week, so I called back a week later and they said they were going to exchange the card for either another ati 2600 or the Nvidia 8800, I said 8800 and a day later on a saturday I received it, swapped the card and NEVER HAD ANY PROBLEMS at all!!
So I don't know if the ATI card has problems with certain monitors or they are just poorly made (maybe AMD is mad with Apple that Apple did not use AMD processors).
I have read others that swapped with the 8800 and their problems went away also!!!!
Maybe some have no problems with the 2600, but I would not recommend it to anyone, if you can avoid the 2600 GO WITH THE 8800, the drivers will get better (and the 8800 will eventually outperform the ATI)and you will not be sorry.
Apple is awesome, they are 2nd to none, their is no other company like this anymore that I have dealt with in a long time (not just because they gave me a 8800), like I said in the beginning of this post I always purchased ATI cards and would have kept it if it would have worked but 2 doing the same, ATI [AMD] has lost my support until they prove otherwise.
I recommend Mac's to everyone now!!
good luck and let me know it any of this has helped!!!!!!!!!!

  • Mac Pro Nvidia 8800GT and snow leopard 10.6.4  problems

I have a Mac pro 1.1 with a Nvidia 8800GT and I have having a lot of problems since update to snow leopard latest release. My computer start to show lines and giggle with lines static and then freeze, it make so bad that you can't do anything even restart the computer does not solve the problem. I have reset the pram and all possible solution available. Maybe the video card is going to die soon?

My MacPro 3.1 with Nvidia 8800 Gt is also not HP.
Initially I was getting some video glitches just after start up but then the machine would settle down and run for the session.
about a week ago the situation got increasingly worse so that from last Sat morning its will not even boot up 4 times out of 5 tries.
Gets to the apple symbol then freezes
I've tried booting from the snow leopard install disc but even then its freezes and I see many video artifacts.
I've ordered a ATi Radeon 4870 to replace the graphics card as I thought that might be the issue. The 8800 GT was full of fluff I feared it had cooked itself this summer.
But now I'm concerned from reading several forum topics that a recent OSX update has effectively killed machines with the 8800 Gt card.
I can't really operate fully without my macpro as that where most of the software is held. CS5 master suite etc
My business partner did say just get another machine but i'm not happy to go down that route just yet. Yes of course a 12 core is tempting but at ££££.££ cost.
lucky I have my Macbook pro to use otehrwise i'd be

  • Maya 2015 cannot see Mac Pro 2013 or GPU

Cannot understand why Apple would have Autodesk certify the AMD D500 on a Mac Pro 2015 when in preference the make of workstation and the GPU cannot be seen.
I am getting nowhere with Autodesk so I hope someone might know here.
Do I have to move to the HP Z820 to get a rig that is professional and truly supported by Autodesk?

I do not understand. Autodesk says that Mac is Certified for use with Maya.
    What is the probelm?

  • Slow render speed with new Mac Pro / NVIDIA 8800

I bought a new Mac Pro to replace a dual G5 because I have a number of Motion projects to finish quickly. My local dealer recommended the NVIDIA 8800 as it has 512 mb RAM (versus 128 on my old machine). I'm finding that the render time is worse than with the G5. I have yet to successfully render a 1 minute segment using Compressor (I've left it to run overnight several times with no success).
In Activity Monitor I'm seeing this message: CompressorTranscoder (Not Responding). But none of Batch Monitor, Compressor or Motion are unresponsive - not indicating any hung applications.
I've read that version 10.5.5 has compromised the NVIDIA card with Motion but haven't been able to get any reliable corroboration. As the Mac Pro shipped with 10.5.5 I can't really roll back to an earlier version.
Any advice? Anyone with similar experiences? I'm trying to render on a new iMac with 4 GB of RAM (with the ATI 2600 video card) but it doesn't seem to be working as it is an hour in and shows at least three more hours.

  • After Effects reports only 2GB of RAM for Mac Pro AMD D700 GPU

Using After Effects CC 12.2 on Mac Pro 2013.
When I go to After Effects>Preferences>Previews>GPU Information the app reports that my system has an AMD D700 GPU for OpenGL.  This is fine, however, it also states that the Total Memory is 2.00 GB, which is well below the 6GB of VRAM the GPU is supposed to have.  Any ideas why this is happening?

I found an interesting post about enabling the GPU in CS6, the GPU Sniffer application embedded within Adobe Premiere CC reports the new Mac Pro video cards as:
