Mac Pro - odd behavior

A couple of days a go I installed a G Tech 2TB External hard drive to take over as my Time Machine , therefore releasing one of the four internal drives. I connected G Tech HD via firewire 800 cable and set it up as the time machine backup , but I have noticed that the Desk Top icon has not changed to the green TM icon as the previous internal hard drive did, ( in fact I have a 1TB G Tech drive on my G5 and it changed icon OK) . Also when I click the Time Machine circle icon in dock it does not launch TM window , any idea what's wrong ?
Also I have noticed that Hot Corners is not now working now and the settings that I had for my Wacom Intuos 3 function keys have disappeared as well ? , last week I had none of these issues . I'm running Lion 10.7.4 . Any ideas ? TIA
Ian

I am not sure why the Icon does not change. I just switched over to a 3TB drive in an external enclosure made by MacAlly (by copying over the old stuff and asking Time Machine to take it over the larger drive). I did see the Icon change from the regular orange external FireWire to the Blue/Green Time Machine backup drive icon, but I am running 10.6.8 and it is a different enclosure.
when I click the Time Machine circle icon in dock it does not launch TM window , any idea what's wrong ?
The conventional wisdom when an Application will not launch is to use Disk Utility "Repair Permissions". This should only be done AFTER you have completed the "Repair Disk" step, which it looks like you have already done.
Time Machine is really strange in what it presents when you invoke the Application (to examine your backup or do a Restore). If there is no Finder window open, it appears to do nothing. It is also not quite a real Application -- most of it is in the Operating System, so it may not look at all like a "regular" Application.
I usually invoke Time Machine (either control Panel that runs backup or the Application that runs restore) by using the circular arrow Icon on the MenuBar.

  • Mac Pro RAID 5 disk goes offline frequently in a random way. What can be causing this odd behavior?

    Hi dudes,
I installed recently two Mac Pro RAID cards inside their corresponding Mac Pro systems. Four 2 TB Hitachi SATA disks are contained inside each system, and configured as RAID 5. Yes, the operating system is installed on this RAID 5 volume in order to get the highest performance of the array, taking advantage of the RAID 5 protection (Autodesk Smoke runs in each system; this application works only with uncompressed video in real time). I already had tested both systems keeping separated the boot disk just for the operating system, and making the RAID 5 volume just with three 2 TB disks, but the performance was slow on both systems.
The performance is now very good, but unfortunately, in both systems happens that sometimes one of the disks goes offline with no apparent reason. The RAID Utility immediately reports the failure and it is mandatory to declare as spare the disk that went offline. Then the rebuild process begins, but in the meantime, the performance goes down in a noticeable way. Sometimes it is even worse, because the disk disappears completely. Then, it is mandatory to turn off the system, and boot it up again, in order to see in the RAID Utility the missing disk, which needs to be declared as spare in order to be reintegrated into the RAID 5 volume in a slow rebuilding process.
Some important remarks: this very new Mac Pro systems do not have the iPass cable (at least apparently; I already disassembled completely one of these systems). This cable is mentioned in one Mac RAID card manual that I found over the internet. The diagrams do not match exactly with the Mac Pro nor the Mac Pro RAID board. I did not find a proper iPass connector in any of the Mac Pro RAID cards (?!). So, my guess is that currently the communication between the system and its Mac Pro RAID card is just by means of the internal bus. I think that if the iPass connection were mandatory, the RAID Utility would report it with a noticeable error message. Please advise.
I think that these Mac Pro RAID cards need a firmware upgrade, in order to be able to work fine with big SATA drives. Again, please advise.
    Thanks in advance from Mexico.
    Sincerely,
    Martin Ponce de Leon

    Hi Grant,
Thank you for your prompt response. The manual is a PDF document issued by Apple and it seems OK, but no updated to the latest Mac Pro system and Mac Pro RAID. I do not find the link where I found this manual. The systems belong to one of our customers. As far as I remember, in the printed manual included with the boards, it is not mentioned anything about the iPass cable, just about the battery cable. Do you know where can I get a PDF manual of the latest Mac Pro RAID card and the latest Mac Pro system? This client is far from our offices. So, I would prefer a PDF copy of this manual.
The drives that have gone offline, once they are back, are reported in a good status in the RAID Utility. Besides that, I have tested them in another system in our facilites, and all of them work fine. So, my guess is that the high capacity drives are not yet supported by the Mac Pro RAID card, or it requires a firmware update.
They do need to have in the same volume OS and video storage because three disks do no provide a good performance (they need also RAID 5), but four disks work fine... excepting when one disk is missing. Please advise. Thank you.
    Best Regards,
    Martin

  • Odd Wireless Mighty Mouse  behavior with new Mac Pro?

    Hi,
I have a brand new Mac pro and Wireless Apple Mighty Mouse & Keyboard.
The mouse however is not operating properly, it is jerky and slow to respond on a intermittent regular basis. I can move the cursor around the screen but it will stutter and jerk slowly then pick up ok?
I had the mouse and keyboard with my iMac and it worked fine. I have run all updates and re-installed but to no avail. The keyboard is fine.
I suspect it's a hardware issue with my new mac Pro but i'd love it if someone has any other possible causes.
    Thanks.

Hi, there's a quite a few people with similar problems, including myself.
My keyboard likes to drop it's connection for no apparent reason, which in turn likes to mess up my mouse and cause it to stutter for a while. Pairing up new devices can do this too, I've found.
It's been thought that some Mac Pro's came with their WiFi and BT wires incorrectly fitted, if you have a search you should find a link to the tutorial if you want to try switching them around.
That said, it didn't make any difference to my BT keyboard and wireless Mighty Mouse, so I switched them back.
I've been hoping for a software fix, but no joy so far, glad I got a three year warranty as standard.

  • Mac Pro (Early 2008) erratic behavior

    Hi,
I have a Mac Pro (Early 2008) 2.8GHz purchased new, about 2+ years ago. I use it mainly for graphics, video editing and photography as well as casual home use. Everything is up to date and routinely checked.
I have added RAM, hard drives and peripherals over time, and about a year ago had to replace the video card to a ATI Radeon 4870 HD after the original nVidia 8800GT card died. Part from that it has worked flawlessly.
Lately however, I am suffering from very serious issues, and I'm worried my logic board might be faulty.
There are three different issues which don't necessarily seem related, but all started much about the same period. They are all sporadic and can't be reproduced.
    1. When turning the machine on, the fans blaze at full speed - and the computer will not boot, although the chiming sound plays. I will then need to force shutdown and try again; sometimes I will need to try more than once.
    2. While working, the computer unexpectedly reboots itself. This happens instantaneously without any prior warning.
    3. While working (I think it is related to watching videos) the computer seems to freeze - although it is just the display - sounds and activities keep running, but there is no control over the machine and I will then have to force shut down.
I have done all the standard tests, including the full Apple Hardware Test and memtest, and everything came out fine. I have reset the SMC, and so far the rebooting issue has not recurred.
I am currently clueless and frustrated from this unacceptable behavior, especially since it is no longer under warranty.
    Any suggestions would be appreciated.
    Thanks

I have this same problem with my 17" MBP - Early 2008.
I'm writing from Brazil, so I took my computer to Apple Brazil, they don't want to change the logic board, because they are saying that my computerdoesnt show some kind of code needed to send to Apple US to replace the part.
Does anyone know how I can contact Apple U.S. to make this claim?
    Sincerely, Alexandre de Carvalho

  • Strange dual monitor behavior: mac pro + leopard + x1900xt + 2 dell 2001FPs

I recently purchased a mac pro dual quad core with radeon x1900xt graphics card. Updated to 10.5.1. I have a dual monitor setup: 2 Dell 2001FPs connected to the x1900xt with dual-link DVI cables.
    Here's the problem:
I want to use both monitors at their optimal resolution (1600x1200). I can get one monitor to run at 1600x1200 by changing the display preferences, but when I change the secondary monitor to something above 1280x1024, it goes dark, then doesn't come back on (the green light remains on, however). Occasionally while this is happening I will get a message on the black monitor telling me the computer is asleep. It obviously is not since I can see it is awake on the operating screen.
    Here's where it gets weird:
I just found out that if I drag the mouse over into the darkened screen and then click a couple times, the monitor comes alive at the desired 1600x1200 resolution! If I restart from there, I get the primary monitor to come up upon startup, but I have to change the secondary monitor back down to 1280x1024, then back up to 1600x1200, then do the mystery clicking with the mouse!
The problem occurs no matter which monitor is primary and no matter which slot is being used on the graphics card.
To me this sounds like a driver problem, but I'm posting in the Mac Pro forum to see if any others have purchased the same configuration and have similar issues.

It appears I have solved my problem...for the time being.
    1. rechecked all connections, replaced cable on secondary monitor with new (no change in behavior)
    2. reviewed system log and saw this junk:

The message above occurred each time I booted the mac pro and I think also when I changed resolutions on the monitors. This appeared to me to be a call to the specialized Apple Display extensions and preferences, not for non-apple displays.
    Resolution:
I went into /System/Library/MonitorPanels/ and copied the AppleDisplay folder to the desktop and renamed it to XXXX.old. I deleted the AppleDisplay folder from its previous directory (I left behind the Arrange.monitorPanel, Display.monitorPanel, Profile.monitorPanel and VGADisplay.monitorPanel files). I then rebooted. No problems since. I can change resolutions all I want and my secondary monitor kicks right in, never staying black.
Note: this seems to work for me because I am using Dell monitors on the mac pro with the x1900xt graphics card. I wouldn't do this if you have monitor trouble, especially if you have an Apple Display, as it seems these files are important for those.

  • My Mac Pro (early 2008) has odd behaviour with 8800gt

    Hello Apple community,
First of all, thank you for your support and sorry if I can't explain the situation correctly. I will be concrete.
I bought a Mac Pro 3,1 (early 2008) 2 weeks after its launch with Nvidia Geforce 8800gt 512mb. It works awesome.
Each five-six months I open it and remove all the dust I can carefully. I am used to do it and I do not touch anything fragile.
The problem is that the screen flashes and then gets frozen everytime the Mac has to use hardware for graphics. When this happens, there are many dots and strypes moving arround with green and pink spots.
    I made both picture and video: http://www.cl.ly/7dGD(pic)    - http://www.cl.ly/7d4U(video)
This happens in every place the Mac uses the graphic card (both browsers showing a youtube video, vimeo, etc... and time machine, which uses graphics for the background), everything get frozen but the sound doesn't until 1 or 2 minutes. When this happens, the only solution is to force shut down (press and holding the power button 5 secs).
The only hope I had was formatting. I thought I had something in my Mac user which could make this happen. So I formatted the Mac Pro last night. A clean install. Everything updated... but the error persists.
    So...
    - I thought the problem was Flash, but it doesn't. The solution I have for playing videos in browser is disabling the hardware option for Flash.
    - I also thought the problem was the capture card but it doesn't because I tried everything without the card installed.
    - I have formatted and the problem persists.
Something is wrong but I don't know what. I am now in the Mac and everythin works great. But the risk exists the moment I am playing a video, editing a video, in Time Machine, playing a game, and so on...
When this happens and the Mac restarts, it shows this info:

I don't know how to solve this problem...
    Thank you for your help

    Try this:
clone your system and repair it with Disk Warrior instead
Or try a clean test system install on another drive
A must: SmcFanControl 2.2 - a mere 400 rpm extra to keep air cooling up
Try to run w/o externals. MyBook included.
Is that a 7200.11 1TB? they had a lot of issues.
Run AHT off your OEM DVD.
2008 had to have EFI and SMC updates to deal with freezes on wake from sleep, and like all models, high inrush current.  Hopefully you have a UPS and is 1500VA unit.
When you do hard restart from power button, you almost certainly add more directory errors and to files requiring immediate attention to repair and rebuild the directory; and to scan and repair and delete cache and temp files and folders. A must. Invest in bootable backups SuperDuper along with Disk Warrior (or TechTool Pro 6, maybe Drive Genius 3 but I'd rate that #3).
TimeMachine has its own bad habits, especially with Green drives and some externals.
Try to rule out everything and then add back one at a time.
And it may just be time to replace the 8800, very common, a couple threads this week, and it is 3 yrs old.  Might want ATI 5870 or 5770.

  • Mac Pro not recognizing bootable DVDs and Disk Utility giving odd results.

My issue is complex, but I'll try my best to explain it as I can.
One has been resolved it seems, but I am including it so that the whole issue can be seen in context.
    Friday, May 16, 2014
Last night, after rebooting my Mac Pro from my Bootcamp partition (I'm using Windows 7 Professional if that information is helpful) I received a kernel panic upon Mac OS X booting (Mac OS X 10.6.8).
My first action was to launch Disk Utility to verify the Mac HD, verify was stopped by disk utility citing that I should insert my Mac OS X install DVD and repair the disk.
I tried booting from my Snow Leopard install DVD. After the grey Apple logo appeared with the gear spinning below it remained for roughly ten to fifteen seconds (a little long) — then the Apple logo changed to. A grey prohibitory sign (circle with a diagonal line through it, the spinning gear remained. — I tried booting from the Snow Leopard DVD a few time, same result.
Following this I tried booting using Disk Warrior, same result again.
I tried booting both the Snow Leopard and Disk Warrior DVDs in both my upper and lower optical drives, with no change.
I decided to leave the issue and call Apple Support in the morning
    Saturday, May 17, 2014
This morning I woke my Mac Pro from sleep, opened Disk Utility and tried verifying the hard drive to see if it was temporary — same result, 'please insert the Mac OS X install DVD and repair the drive.' — I also tried booting the install DVD again with no result.
I then booted my Mac into Safe Mode to check my hardware.
Upon opening Disk Utility and verifying my Mac HD — the result "Macintosh HD appears to be OK", rand the test again to see if this was an anomaly, but disk returned another pass.
I performed a normal restart of my system, although Finder was a little slower to load than normal, the system booted correctly. — I then launched Disk Utility and verified the Mac HD, it returned another pass.
This confused me, after a call to Apple Support the tech explained that 'sometime a Safe Mode boot will fix problems because it disables all non-essential processes when booting. — That makes sense to me.
    However.
The issue of my Mac not recognizing bootable DVDs remains — it reads disks correctly, it just will not boot them.
Other steps I have taken to try and resolve this remaining issue.
    1. a PRAM reset. — No change.
    2. an SMC reset. — No change.
    3. Removal of newly installed RAM. — I have tried both running the old and new RAM separately, no change using either combination.
    4. Running bootable DVDs in different optical bays. — No change from both bays.
    a. My upper drive is an MCE Blu-Ray/DVD combo drive, but I have booted from this drive before. (Less than six months old.)
    b. My lower drive is LG DVD-RAM combo drive, I have also booted from this drive before. (Over one year old, replacement for an Apple optical drive.)
None of the above steps have helped, I still cannot boot from my optical drives — I always receive a prohibitory sign shortly after the Apple logo.
    Other system information:
    Mac OS X 10.6.8
    8GB of RAM (4 x 2GB)
500GB Western Digital Caviar Blue HDD (less than a year old, boot drive for Mac OS X 10.6.8)
1TB Samsung HDD (for data storage and also containing Bootcamp partition)
2TB HDD (cannot remember manufacturer, contains Time Machine backups, as well as data storage)
ATI Radeon HD 5770 with 1GB of VRAM
Sorry for the long post but I really need to be able to boot from my optical drives.

Update: found an old Mountain Lion installation USB flash drive I created a while back.
I am able to boot from the ML USB flash drive, but am still unable to boot from my either my Snow Leopard Install DVD or my Disk Warrior DVD. — I have verified both DVD and they pass verification tests.
This leads me to believe that the problem resides either in the Mac, or in BOTH  the Snow Leopard and Disk Warrior DVDs.
Since I am able to boot from a USB drive, I will look into the possibility of creating a bootable Snow Leopard drive, and perhaps also a Disk Warrior drive — at least until I can resolve the 'not able to boot from DVD' issue.

  • Mac Pro 2008 Install Blu-Ray Internal ODD Port?

Hello everything together I has the LG GGW h 20 L Blu Ray and would like the burner to internal port to attach, but that unfortunately cannot be done. Toast detects the burner however it can only CDs and DVDs burning and no Blu-Ray, I have myself an PCI x Card bought with the SIL 3132 chip record, but
this does not want to function so correctly. What can I make? Greeting
    from Frankfurt
My System Mac Pro 2008 2x2,8 2 TB HD end 16 GB Ram

The PCI card might be causing your issues. There are 2 SATA ports on the Mac Pro's motherboard that you can attach the drive to, but it can be tricky trying to reach them. Also, make sure you have the latest version of Toast. The minimum requirement is version 8, but version 9 is recommended.

  • Weird Font behaviors /  Mac Pro (Early 2009) NEC LCD2690WUXI

Mac Pro Quad-Core Intel Xeon 2.66 GHz 8 GB Ram. GeForce GT 120 NEC MultiSync LCD2690WUXI Monitor.
System fonts unresolved (not crisp) ghost-like, "rainbow colors". Targeted to the new Mac Pro from my G5. Some fonts tested corrupt. Then tried a clean install of the OS. Fonts tested fine, problem persists. Hardware tests passed. Started up from "test account" same problem. Checked connections, popped the hood, checked the card (well seated) Went to the NVIDIA site to look for drivers for the GT 120 (none there for Mac OS, what's with that?) System fonts with this monitor on the G5 were as crisp and clean as you would expect.
Really at my wits end. Is the card bad? Some sort of incompatibility with the monitor? Connection issue. I did hook the Mac Pro up to my old LaCie CRT and it looked OK. Wow. Any thoughts? Anyone?
    Thanks In Advance,
    Daniel

    Dear Phatpurrly,
I don't know where you can find a cheep Vista copy; I personally don't use this far too expensive beta-software (I bought a Mac to be able to avoid Microsoft in the first place).
But for you as a MacPro owner it's a possibility to discover if this is a hardware or software problem. There are also some threads in this forum pointing at issues with specific monitors not recognized to be a computer monitor but only seen as a television screen!
Apart from that: Yes, you should have gone for the ATI Radeon card in the first place, but that's my personal opinion after years of experience in the graphic industry. NVidia might be good for gamers, but certainly not for serious work on that, may I say, excellent and expensive screen you own.
    Best regards,
    Robbert (notice: 2 b's)

  • Mac Pro makes a odd sound!

Whenever I turn on my Mac Pro, after several minutes I hear this single tick sound. Almost like something either switched on, or got warmed up and expanded a little? Anyone else have that? I never experience any issues because of it, but do you think it's something I should check out with applecare?

You never replaced the video card? added or replaced RAM? other changes?
Lack a bootable backup? usually called clone.
    How many types of backup?
Also, Lion 10.7.5 is supported but not earlier versions.
FBDIMMs fail, not if but only when, due to heat stress.
PSU problems are rare. A UPS of course is a wise investment and should be a must on any desktop or workstation computer.
Reset the SMC involves unplugging everything. Then hitting power button. Then wait. Reconnect only kb/mouse and monitor.
The X1900 had to be removed and cleaned every 3-4 times a year due to dust and heat.
The OEM 7300GT would likely be on its last leg also.
The system startup disk - generally replace every 2-3 yrs if not more. Ideal today, a 128-250GB SSD $80-130.
My guess is that even if you remove all the disk drives and try booting, it won't. But try. And try from the OEM 10.4.7 DVD or later retail OS X disc.

  • My Mac Pro and Snow Leopard

A list of things that happen since installing Snow L on Mac Pro
    -Stuttering boot up sound
It is not always the same, sometimes stutters a lot sometimes it stutters two or three times. I never hear a normal boot up sound.
    -Random Lock ups/failing apps
Apps like Mail, iTunes, Safari, Logic will lock up at start up or with use. Clicking a song in iTunes will freeze the app. Sending an email will lock up mail, loading an attachment,
    -Logic 9
The Pro app crashes 4 out of 5 times for me. It will hang on Initializing Core Audio, Pressing a space bar to start a song, switching projects, sometimes for no apparent reason. I have stopped using it now for running projects since it is so unreliable.
    -RME fire face 800
I have used this as one of my interfaces for a few years now with my ppc and now with mac pro. It was never an issues to turn the unit on or off multiple times while MP was running. Basically it had no effect, I would turn the unit on/off during a itunes song for example. It seemed that it did not have an effect on the MP since it would switch to internal audio.
Now however if the unit is not on when the MP starts up a lock up is 100% guaranteed. All my music apps will lock up (mostly while launching)
    -iTunes
Like I already mentioned the lock ups but when app starts I get checking iTunes library almost every time now.
    -Force Quit
I am not able to use force quit since it locks up itself when trying to force quite any of the above mentioned apps.
    -Odd Stuff
Extra blank spaces in the menu bar. Clicking them opens blank context box
Logic 9 - choosing an Logic Instrument shows Mac HD instead of instrument name.
I am running 10.6.1 and all my software, hardware, plug ins are up to date.
I can't wait for more updates but I would assume that everybody is not having all of these problems. I did not do a clean install but ran SL over Leopard. I just had too many apps that are a pain in the rear to install and reauthorize again (Native Instruments Komplete 5 for example).
Now I don't know if I will have to do that or just wait for updates. I mean I have had the "grey curtain" crash a couple of times out of the blue with basic apps are running.
    Your thoughts?

There are ways to minimize, mitigate, and help avoid a lot of problems.
    Bootable backups.
Zeroing a drive twice before using, and format it with SL DVD Apple Disk Utility for sure.
Even a clean install should import old apps without having to reauthorize.
If you must do an upgrade, do it from the SL DVD, after repairing the drive and be sure to use the SL version of Alsoft Disk Warrior (4.2).
Wait six months before jumping on a new OS.
10% is still too many. Yes, it is more sensitive to RAM and hard drive errors, doesn't like some controllers; most ext hdd cases; and enough software to make for test-only status. And it only IDs some known incompatible applications, drivers, extensions, etc and does not remove even those always in best manner.
Plus, there are problems with the new Rosetta and the cache files it now uses. So some apps and plug-ins will cause more trouble. Not all are ready. Good reason to hold off for the months it takes.
Other devices act different as far as on/off behavior.
(Migrating from G5s to Mac Pro can cause all kinds of problems, weird behavior, sluggish system, and why anyone that went down that road was strongly recommended to NOT use Migration Assistant for any of their applications, and to ONLY do clean/fresh installs of any apps. If you skipped that day, didn't read the Guide to M.A., or didn't want to do fresh installs then, your system could have been on borrowed time. If you did do clean install of applications, great.
Installing SL can result in a corrupt directory - I think and it "seems" to be happening, but no real proof, just gut feeling and instinct (underlying file system problem? weak sectors that pre-existed waiting to happen?).
Remember all the "there just aren't a lot of 64-bit drivers" for Vista and XP? it's come home to roost.
... my guess is not enough incense and offerings. To hop into TimeMachine and SuperDuper backup images and pull the 1TB for another day (week, month, year).

  • Mac Pro (Early 2008) shuts down unexpectedly

I have a recurring problem with my Mac Pro (Early 2008). I put the computer to sleep; then, when I tap a few keys on the keyboard to wake it up, I hear the start-up sound and it boots up as if it were shut down.
This is particularly strange, because I do not have to use the "power" button on the tower to turn it on. When I tap the keys on the keyboard, as if to wake it from sleep, it makes the start-up sound and boots. I am guessing that somehow it is shutting off when I first try to wake it from sleep, and then must re-boot. But this is odd behavior that I've never seen from any Mac, and I've been using them for almost 20 years.
Any ideas? I'm going to call Apple Support but I always dread those long wait times and often fruitless conversations. I did not migrate information from my previous system; I took the time to manually migrate my files and reinstalled all apps from DVD specifically to avoid problems like this. Very frustrating.

I've noticed the same problem for one day with my new MP 2.8 dualquad, got a reboot after every sleep.
This solved the issue for me:
    • Reset the PRAM (Boot the machine and hold ALTCOMMAND+PR for 3 startup gongs)
    • Reset the SMC -> http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=304123-en
    Good luck

  • New Mac Pro (6 core, D700, 32GB), Mavericks 10.9.4, dragging and scrolling lag, overall system bugginess

Since upgrading to 10.9.4 i've been beset with numerous bugs and general odd system behavior.
Previous to this update I had experience lag when using my Wacom Intuos 4 tablet. For example when doing a preview render in Maya the tablet would become unresponsive and laggy. This never occurred on my old Mac Pro 2008.
I noticed there was an update to the Wacom Drivers (6.3.8-2) so I did the update. After updating I've been experiencing dramatically slow screen redraw. So whenever I drag a window or scroll, the image stutters, flickers and lags as it tries to redraw to keep up with mouse position. This makes it impossible to use the computer.
I uninstalled the Wacom drivers and the lag and redraw errors persist. I looked at Activity Monitor to if it was some other system resource like Spotlight that was momentarily hogging resources. The only thing I notice is that the dreaded "kernel_task" seems to be using a lot of ram (1.46 GB) and cpu time (usually at the top of the list). Also, "com.apple.IconServicesAgent" seems to be using a lot of CPU time (usually #2 in the list).
I'm at a loss as to what to do about this other than re-install everything from scratch. I've read through numerous forum threads about the kernel_task issue but nothing seems to apply to the New Mac Pro.
Hopefully someone has some experience with these issues and some good advice for fixes.
    Jonathan

    Hi All,
There are numerous threads about multi-monitor and resume-from-sleep issues with Mac Pro 2010 (5,1) and ATI 5870. There is also one thread in this forum with another user having problems with DisplayPort (henceforth, "DP") on his PA271W, but he has other issues that point to power supply or some other kind of problem.
My problem is that my brand new Mac Pro won't drive my PA271W at all with a mini-DP to DP cable. The same PA271W will drive fine from the secondary output of my iMac. The same PA271W will also work fine on the Mac Pro with DVI.
Apple sent me a replacement 5870 today, and it exhibits the same behavior. I'm trying to determine which of the following is the case:
    a) 2010 MP, ATI 5870, and PA271W are an impossible combination that doesn't work.
    b) My 2010 MP has some weird issue that makes the 5870 and PA271W not work.
Unfortunately, I don't have another DP monitor to swap the third variable. I've swapped the second variable courtesy Apple. I'd rather not swap the first variable until I absolutely know that's the problem, because it's a huge hassle to disassemble and reassemble another machine.
Anyone already have this exact configuration working okay?
    Thanks,
    Ben

To answer your question based on what I have seen and inferred so far:
    a) I think there's some odd interaction b/w the PA271W, the 5870, and some diagnostic message the 5870 send to the logic board.
    b) I don't think this is the case (alternatively ALL 2010 MPs are screwed up!). I was at the Apple store yesterday and tried both a 30" + dual-link miniDP adapter and a 24" miniDP monitors with no issues at all. There's clearly and issue between the PA271W and the 5870, I think.
My PA271W + miniDP/DP cable work fine on both a '09 mac mini and a '09 macbook pro 17". On the mac pro, I cannot boot with it's connected to the miniDP, but it works fine when connected to the DVI port. I can actually connect the PA271W to the miniDP after booting, and this actually works fine, but I'm not going to be doing this every time, too much of a pain.
One important clue (I think): If the mac pro is switched OFF and the PA271W is switched ON, the overcurrent LED light (right next to the CPU) will light up. What this indicates to me is not that there's a power issue (as I originally thought) but that somehow the 5870 is reporting to the mac that something really nasty is connected to it's miniDP connector, and that the mac should not boot.
A poster suggested I disable the DDC/IC on the PA271W. I have the impression this might work (will try tonight). Spectraview can use the USB port for communication with the monitor so I don't think this would be a problem.
