Mac Pro operating temps

hello,
i just got home form college for break. i store my mac pro in the basement at home. its very very cold down there. im afraid to run the machine form cold. i realize that apple says operation temp is 50 degrees min. at the moment its 61 here. is it ok to run my machine w/o putting too much stress? bc i realize as soon as i turn on the tem goes to 80+ and 99~ inside. is this healthy? please let me know.
God Bless

Basically you need to have the COMPUTER at 50 or above. It's mainly to keep the condensation from forming and shorting something out or the hardware inside from expanding too fast and breaking/cracking from heating up too quick.
It's the worst case scenario but why take the chance. It mainly depends on the humidity. If your in a dry State then not too big an issue but if your in the NW or SE then could be a problem.
Next time when you first get home just bring the computer upstairs and by the time you get things situated it should have warmed up enough.
Enjoy your stay....

  • Can I use a mac pro operating system disk to upgrade a macbook

I need to upgrade my 10.5.8 system to 10.6 before I can upgrade to Lion. I have a mac pro operating system disk for 10.6 can I use this?

No. The gray-colored restore DVDs provided with a Mac are not the retail OS version. They contain only the drivers applicable for the purchased hardware, and the installer has a function to verify the hardware is of the type the disk was created for. If you attempt to use the Mac Pro restore disk on a different model Mac, it will simply refuse to install.

  • With Boot Camp, should I install the 64 bit version of Windows 7 (Home Premium edition) OR the 32 bit version when installing onto an early 2008 Mac Pro operating OSX Lion with a 1 TByte internal HDD?

With an early 2008 Mac Pro I'm about to add a second internal drive (1 TByte SATA) and initially install OSX Lion onto the new drive.  Then to partition this new HDD via Boot camp.  But my question is whether I am best advised to purchase the 64 bit version of Windows 7 (Home Premium) or the 32 bit version of Windows 7 (Home Premium) for the Windows sector of the disk  What are the differences, and will I notice a difference in performance?

In chart from wiki, (scroll down to "Comparison chart") check the maximum CPUs supported.
You don't see this on MSoft's 1st searched for chart hit. This is one reason you will regret not paying for Professional+ if you get Home Premium 64 as I did for Mac Pro early 2008.
Home Prem Task Mgr sees 4 processors vs. the 8 that are seen by Pro+.
Costs more than a Mac upgrade to Lion if you make that mistake.

  • Mac Book Pro Operating Temp

I have seen a few posts on leaving a MBP in the Cold car. How big an issue is this? I live in Fla, my wife keeps the AC in the house at 65, I usually shut down my MBP and put it in the bag, I then go to work in a Non Ac'd Pool Store. My MBP is Ice Cold, of Course, it is already warm and humid in the Store. Does anyone see problems with the Whole Moister thing? or as I see it the Extremes are well within the " Limit"
    Thanx

    fratinize
The MBP as well as other notebooks are designed to shutdown if temps hit a critical value so as not to damage the electronics. And of course the more apps you're running at one time will increase the temps. I use a third party app iStats Menu which monitors just about all systems on your Mac. It is also available for free as a dashboard widget iStats Pro . My MBP with just Chrome running hits a temp of 110 degrees farenheit. Fans around 2000RPM's. As long as you allow for adequate venilaton for the fans you should be ok. there are programs such as Fan Control to manually adjust fan speed, though I never use them myself some people do. Hope this helps. Also running your machine in a cool/cold environment say at 65 degrees farenheit will not damage your machine. the cooler the better. When your talking about temps at freezing and below that may be a different story. as an amateur astronomer I've had Mac books outside at temps of 32 and below which did not harm my machines.

  • Mac pro operating problems

    hi
i have macpro i7 8 gb ram with os x 10.8.4  , my problems are
    1. it gets hanged many times ,
i feel that it is slower than my old windows laptop
all the actions are a more than 10 to 15 seconds, delayed, after we enter the commands,
even if have a few tabs open it is very slow
even for the word and excel file, it is the same slow,
please do let me know the solution to this
    thanks
    harin sheth

    okay, I will try
first, do you have a backup system? If so, backup your stuff. Hard drives can and do fail. Consider it insurance.
Second, try running Disk Utility, verify your hard disk and repair permissions. Third, fire up Activity Monitor and see if anything is being a resource hog. If so, teach it a few manners, so to speak.  Check your startup items
and see if anything is loading that shouldn't be loading. If you are running word and excel, check for updates, or consider NeoOffice or OpenOffice. After that, maybe something like techtool or drive genius. Do not install MacKeeper or MacCleaner, Oh, and remember this, just because you have closed a program and are finished using it, doesn't mean that it will quit automatically. You have to do that yourself. just press command and Q when you are done and have saved your stuff.  Having many programs running at the same time may slow down your Mac.  Other than that, I don't know.   We used to be able to do an "archive and install" but these days??
Hmmm....the crystal ball has gone dark. Guess I forgot to pay my bill
I may be a good man, but I"m a bad wizard....just click your heels together  , and say "there's no place like the Genius Bar, there's no place like the Genius Bar, there's no place like the Genius Bar, then "follow the yellow brick road"

  • First G5 Quad says AppleSMU System Shutdown cause =3, now Mac Pro says -128 as a shutdown cause.

A weird error I can't seem to troubleshoot easily through research has happened to my 2010 Mac Pro. Its called AppleSMU -- Shutdown cause = -128 = Does anyone have an idea what -128 it? I know what -1, -2, -3, -110(Power supply) all mean, but -128?
To further troubleshoot the problem I rebooted in safe mode and everything seems to be working normally. My Mac Pro's temps are within operating range as well as the PSU. Can someone shed some light on what -128 means? Does anyone have a list of Apple shutdown codes with their meanings? I am going to attempt to run ASD and AHT tonight to see what the problem could be though.
    Thanks.
Its like my G5 is running without problems, where as my Mac Pro(just by not using it for almost a week) is now giving me a shutdown cause of -128.

Wow...  I found the problem, totally unexpected.
It was a misbehaving UPS unit.  Not anything with the computer at all !!
It had never happened while I was around to see it before.  With the computer plugged directly into the wall, no more recurring rebooting.
I think it's a worn out battery in my UPS.  Now, if I could only get all those computer diognostic hours of my life back.

  • Why does Indesign CS4 stall on my Mac Pro with Snow Leopard as soon as I load a file?

I recently bought a Mac Pro (operating system: Snow Leopard) and installed the latest versions of Photoshop and InDesign (both CS4). I also installed those programmes on my older MacBook Pro with the former (Leopard) operating system.
Photoshop works just fine on the Mac Pro, with the machine's new Snow Leopard operating system. However, there is a problem with InDesign. Everytime I open a file, even opening a new file, the programme is stalling and I have to force-stop it.
Does anyone out there in the Adobe Community have a similar problem and could suggest a solution?
Looking thankfully forward to interesting replies!  Emil

I first installed the next to last version; the problem appeared there
(programme stalling as soon as a document is opened). I then updated to
6.04, hoping for a solution, but the problem remained unresolved. I still
cannot open a document without stalling InDesign. When installing InDesign
in my MacBook Pro (which runs Leopard), the problem does not arise. I am
able to open documents there and work as usual. The operative system was
installed by the supplier of the machine. Since I was not able to access it
(Password issues), I reinstalled it by booting the MacPro from the disquette
that was delivered together with the machine.
    HELP! I am getting desparate!

  • How do I clean apple mac pro of junk?

    Hi
I have an Apple Mac Pro operating on Mac OS X Version 10.7.5. I participated in a few surveys a while back and now my mac is overrun with ads and requests that stop me from viewing whatever internet browser I use.
How do I safely clean my Mac of all this junk?
    Thanks

Click here and follow the instructions, or if desired, run Adware Medic; the second link is a direct download.

  • Mac Pro 2.66 (2006) CPU Temps

It's been a while since I took a look at the my temps and what not using Hardware Monitor but the other day I reached behind my Mac Pro... it seemed to me that it was awfully warm... so it peeked my curiosity...
Today I checked and my CPU temps are all around 135F... as I said, it's been a while since I looked but I seem to remember them being sub-100F at idle...
    Am I not remembering correctly?
    Thoughts?
    Thanks!
    -Justin

See if installing SmcFanControl 2.2+ to create profiles and change default fan speed works, changes the fans.
Rather than wait for the system to heat up, switch to a higher rpm profile for that purpose, say 900-1000 rpm is still just barely audible but moves much more air and cooling. 1200-1500 for high.
Once the fans kick in, or cpus are under a work load, it can end up being cooler than it was.
The new 2009s with HT can be forced to use more power, create more heat. For 2006, the big issue is/was the ATI X1900 and clogging with dust and overheating, which needs to be pulled and cleaned every 3 months.

  • What are the normal operating temps for a G5 Quad Core Power Mac Tower?

I asked this within another thread but I am afraid it will get buried and think it deserves its own item.
I just downloaded Temperature Monitor and have been looking at the data. I have no idea how to interpret the figures and there are no listings of specified upper and lower limits even though there is an area where those numbers should go.
The numbers are constantly in flux, going up and down a degree or two but here is a recent example from a screenshot taken while I was running WORD (but not working on any document), Terminal, Apple Mail, Firefox (two windows open), Temperature Monitor, Preview, Dashboard and Finder:
    Air Tunnel 99.5 degrees F
Air Tunnel Heatsink 92.8 degrees F
    CPU A Core 1 Diode 107.5 degrees F
    CPU A Core 2 Diode 107.8 degrees F
    CPU B Core 1 Diode 108.0 degrees F
    CPU B Core 2 Diode 111.5 degrees F
    Drive Bay 87.8 degrees F
Graphics processor chip 131.0 degrees F
Main Logic Board Air Inlet --- (this is always missing)
Main Logic Board Backside 108.7 degrees F
Memory Controller Diode 133.9 degrees F
    SMART Disk WDC WD2500JS-41M.... 104.0 degrees F.
The icon for the program, in the dock, gives me an ever changing number that is perhaps an overall reading - an average. Right now the number is 106.4 degrees F (taken some minutes after the screenshot providing the above data). Always in flux.
Do any of these temps look alarming? And HOW and WHERE do I find out what the temperatures SHOULD be?
    PS I have APPLE RAM.

If you want to find out whether a sensor value is within normal limits, please select the menu item Window > Show Overview (or press Apple+1) and look for the limits in the third and fourth column of the sensor table. They contain the known official limits Apple has specified for readings acquired at the given sensor locations. If no limit is given in the table, this either means that it does not make sense to specify a limit for this particular sensor (e.g. the battery capacity should not have limits), or Apple hasn't published any specifications for this sensor.
Note that all up-to-date Macintosh models automatically shut down or enter sleep mode if one of the readings exceeds a critical limit. For this reason it is impossible that your computer can be damaged in an overtemperature condition.

  • I have a mac pro 2007 model. It appears I have a corrupted sector on my the hadrive tha has my operating system. If I use the install disk that came with is (Tiger) can I still get my lion back.

I have mac pro 2007 model given to me, I updated it to lion about six months ago, and I do not have a time machine.
Lion stopped loading before I get to the login screen,
I tried all the tips, doing a option/shift/v. I noticed several fsk_dsk errors that it could not fix on my boot drive.
Restore would not work either. The only physical copy I have is the install disk that came with the mac. I think it is Tiger.
If I put this operating system on will I be abel to upgrade it to lion, and if so will I have to pay again?

The Lion Recovery Partition has its own index. Your Macintosh HD partition is the one with the troubles.
If Disk Utility cannot fix it, you may need to apply different Utilities, such as Disk Warrior.
Some readers suggest that the best disk repair is to erase the drive and restore it from your Backups.
This might be a good time to consider getting a new drive to have on hand. This would allow you flexibility in copying, fixing, and (if needed) replacing the drive with the problems.

Though it's unlikely to be wrong if things were set up properly in the first place, as a check go to Mail Preferences>Accounts and check that the server setting for IMAP (incoming) is imap.mail.me.com (not just mail.me.com).
Your next step either way would be to go to System Preferences>iCloud and sign out, then sign back in again. (You can ignore warnings about data disappearing - your calendars etc. will disappear when you sign out but reappear when you sign back in).

  • Can a mac pro have a windows operating system?

just wondering if a mac pro be able to have windows it's primary operating system?

    I NEVER use BCA
Put Windows on its own drive and remove everything
the only purpose/use for BCA is to download the drivers you will want to have that get installed after Windows is running - it works without also.
So what I do is pull OS X drive, have Windows 8, data and backup drive, and clone Windows to #4th using Paragon (bootable) or slip ini an old Windows 7.
Yes can be 100% Windows, and you can have mulitple Windows boot drives, run VMs under Windows also.
