Mac Pro optical drive is really loud.....

I just got may mac pro today and when i turned it on I noticed that the optical drive sounded as if it was running on full throttle at all times. It is in a well ventilated area, I reset the pram, and still no luck! I also did a hardware test and it detected an error 4SNS/1/40000000:Vp0C. Just before it detected the error the optical drive became quiet for a few seconds and then went right back to being loud....Any ideas????

Thanks for the reply, but I took it to the apple store today and they ran a full diagnostic test on it. It turns out it really wasn't the optical drive. There was a bad sensor on the logic board causing the power supply fan to run at full blast. Looks like im gonna have to wait even longer to be able to enjoy my mac pro:(

Mac Pro optical drive problems

I have a 2009 Mac Pro and have been having problems with optical drives I've installed in the lower bay. I initially installed a Toshiba drive that had Lightscribe technology, as I needed this for my wife's business and my Lacie external Lightscribe drive finally died. This drive worked great except for a loud "click, click" noise that it made every few minutes when not in use. I had originally attributed this noise to a hard drive starting or stopping but after repeated attempts to isolate the drive were unsuccessful, I resorted to using my old mechanic's stethescope and the noise seemed to be coming from the lower optical drive. I confirmed this by opening its tray and leaving it open which got rid of the noise. It was a very annoying noise, easily heard in my bedroom across the hall when the machine was asleep (and I wasn't). I decided to change it out for a Blu-Ray drive as the prices had come down out of the stratosphere. I bought a Pioneer drive from OWC and after having it disappear and reapper on me, behavior verified as a problem by checking these boards, I exchanged it for an LG unit. This one works fine and seems to stay recognized by the Apps that use it but a "click" is back. This occurs with about the same frequency as the Toshiba but is a single click and is much quieter. There is no periodic noise from the factory Superdrive. Someone suggested somewhere that this could be caused by Spotlight trying to access the drive. This doesn't seem logical as the noise only happens when there is no disk mounted. Would there be any software that would periodically "ping" the optical drive, even when the system was asleep? I can live with the noise from this one but am still curious if others have had this problem, and may have come up with a solution. Thanks, Ted
The drive installed now is an LG model number: WH12LS39KMP, the previous noisy drive was a Toshiba SH-S223

Repeated starting and stopping hard drives is not a good idea, and should be limited to laptops running on battery power. With most, the heads rub on the discs while starting or stopping. Drives specs usually allow only 25,000 to 50,000 starts. Temperature changes between running and sleeping puts stress on electronics, and can cause earlier failures. Also the starting current stresses the motur circuitry.
Apple optical drives have special firmware. If you look in the "ATA" section of "System Profiler" (Utilities folder) you should see that the Apple supplied drive supports "Low Power Polling". This may be why Apple optical drives don't have problems with drive sleep mode.

Mac Pro optical drive hardware is causing Leopard to hang on startup

I had installed Leopard on a new internal drive with a clean install. However, everytime I tried to boot, it hanged on the blue screen or took me to the Leopard desktop where it froze.
I called Apple and through the process of elimination they asked to to disconnect my two optical drives...the first is a Sony NEC Optiarc DVD RS AD-7170A that came with the computer. The second is a Pioneer DVD-RW DVR-112. After separating the ribbon cable that connects both drives, I was able to successfully boot into Leopard with no problems. That said, Apple regarded my issue as now a hardware issue rather than a software issue...and said I should take the Mac Pro into the local store for repair.
I've tested each of the optical drives individually to see if by hooking them up one by one to see if one will allow the system to boot. But neither one allows me to boot into Leopard successfully. Apple also says that the ribbon cable could also be a possible reason as well.
Before I make the trek to the store, does anyone out there have any similar stories to share with their Mac Pro? I have NOT updated to the latest firmware for the Mac Pro which is EFI 1.2 and I may try that as a last resort. Also, I tried to find any Superdrive firmware updates for the Mac Pro's Sony Optiarc drive on Apple's website, but could not locate any.
Let me know if anyone out there has some info to share on this.

Mac Pro optical drive won't open - it could be virtualbox!

I use Virtualbox to check websites in IE and other windows browsers.
To get the optical drive to work in windows, I had to allow VB to "take over" the optical drive when VB was running.
So when my optical drive would not open this morning, and just before panic set in, I remembered that I had left VB running an hour ago, and was probably not letting me open my optical drive from Mac OS.
As soon as I shut down VB, I had full control of my optical drive again.

I'm having exactly the same trouble with my Pioneer BDR-208D (SATA). I have swapped bays and swapped drives with the earlier BDR-207D, but the same symptoms occur with both, so I do not believe it's a problem with the drive itself. It is as if power stops to the optical drive buses.
My machine is a mid-2010 model Mac Pro 2 x 2.4 Ghz quad core running OSX 10.7.5.
Any luck with the energy saver solution? I'm going to give that a try right now.

Optical drive is very loud - why?

My optical drive is so loud it sounds like it's ready for takeoff. I've only had my late 2008 MacBook Pro for a couple of months and had no problems with CD's until just recently. They play just fine, but the drive keeps spinning at top speed throughout the time the CD plays. It did not do this until recently, and some of the referenced CDs were fine previously. I have had several optical drives in the past and all have behaved the same except this one. What I believe should be typical behavior: as the drive begins to read the disk it usually gets a little louder, then a little louder, then a little louder again, then backs off a level or two as you are listening/watching. Not silent, but not spinning at top speed either. Is this correct?
I took it to the genius bar today and they told me it was fine (in the middle of a very loud, busy store - I'm not sure how they could tell). They wouldn't allow me to compare it to another machine of theirs because they said that three different types of drives are used (in a late 2008 MacBook Pro???). When he confirmed that I'm stuck with this drive, I inquired how much it would cost to get a different/best new drive installed. He told me they never know which of the three drives they will get when they place an order. So even with Apple Care I can't BUY a decent drive????
I just want to be able to play CD's and not be blasted by the volume in order to cover up the ridiculously loud drive. And yes, I also download and copy music to my hard disk........but don't always want to do that.
At this point I don't even care about the cost..... I just want something that's right. Any suggestions on a new drive and where to get one?

There will likley be no discernable difference.
If you do not have a drive in the first bay, it may change the airflow slightly, as it will no longer act as a dam to improve the airflow of the intake fan.

I have the same problem and was advised by someone to reset System Management Controller (SMC). I haven't tried it yet though. I wish it could fix it. Let's give it a shot!

Mac Pro Hard Drive Connectors

I need to replace the two screws that hold the hard drive connectors to the Mac Pro.
Does anyone know where I can begin to find these? They are two small black screws.
The previous owner of my Mac Pro removed them so that he could attach an SSD drive loosely to the Mac Pro.
I'm going to replace the SSD drive, as it failed, and it comes with a 3.5" tray that should attach to the Mac Pro hard drive carrier, but when I push it back in to align up with the hard drive connector, since he removed the screws, it doesn't align up and go in without me manually connecting it. I'd like to get it back to the way it was with the screws.
So...I wonder what part number that is or how I can get those two little screws, the exact ones?
Any advice would be great.

Another thing you can do in Lion (and ML) is click on the "Info" button in Disk Utility to get the SMART status of the drive.It's more detailed now than it used to be and it might tell you if something is wrong.
A lot can go wrong with a hard drive which is why I tend to point people to the downloads section of the following web site:

They have a free hard drive troublleshooting download book there. I reccommend people download that before asking questionis because there are tons of problems that can act like hard drive problems when there's nothing wrong with the system at all. For example, how full is the drive? How many applications are running? What's the status of Spotlight indexing? How many apps are you running? How much memory do you have?
I could probably think up 20 or 30 more if needed.

Use macbook pro optical drive with mac mini

Just received my new mac mini. Wonderful.
I would like to keep my old 2006 Macbook Pro 2,2 and use it as a DVD drive. It is running 10.7.5.
Would you please give me some advice and pointers?
Also, I have a few files on the old MBpro I would like to transfer to the Mac Mini. What's the best way?
Finally, what else could I do with the old machine? It was a fine computer, and it feels sad being underused.

It took just a few minutes to find answers to my questions. Congratulations for such a user friendly OS.
I just had to connect everything and open the finder on my mac mini.
So, here is what I found:
- "Remote Disc" is the name of the feature to share the optical drive
- not every type of disc is supported though. Why? How can I watch a DVD on my 27'' display?
- the MBP files show up in the finder, i can transfer them
- using "share c=screen" I can see my MBP screen. Should I use that feature to watch a DVD on the 27'' display?

New Macbook Pro Optical Drive Issues

Okay. So I'm new at college, and had to buy a computer from the University, which I did. I got a Macbook Pro, because I really do like the Mac OS much better. However, I am having constant problems with my Optical Drive. When I first got it, the drive wasn't even recognized in the System. So I turned it in to the Help Desk, they say it works, I get it back and it doesn't. So, I opened it up and re-seated connection to the board and it works. I burned a couple CDs, installed printer, etc it's all working.
Now, for some reason, the drive is constantly doing something when nothings even in there. It's constantly making noises and such, and it will freeze my computer every couple minutes, locking me out. Even while I'm typing this, it's constantly freezing and stuff. When I put a disc in, it's not recognized. I just checked in the Profiler and now the drive isn't seen anymore. What's going on?? Please help!!

After taking it in to the tech department, I gave up on them and opened it myself. Re-seated the connection from the Superdrive to the main board, and it works fine.

New Mac minis' optical drives

Hello, today I've read in German Macintosh magazine, that the new Mac minis (released last month) would include a different optical drive (at least the model with a dvd burner inside) and that this drive would be much louder when reading dvds than the drive in the previous model.
I am really concerned about this issue, because I am looking forward into buying a Mac mini for my living room to hook it up to my TV.
So my question is: Does somebody know about the smaller mac mini model without dvd buring capabilities? Is it more silent or as loud as the model with dvd burner? Is it more silent or louder than the previous model without dvd burner?

Sound from optical drives is often a function of the quality of media. I've stated what you can do to avoid having low quality media in this thread:

That said, if you find the drive you get is too noisy, you can always put the Mini behind the TV. Just be sure wherever it is put it has enough air circulation so it doesn't overheat. You can get DVI cables as long as 50 feet if you shop around.
