Mac pro OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard won't boot after software up-date
I am new to Apple/Mac products. I recently bought an iPad and liked it so much mt epiphany was that this must be why Mac users are so loyal to Apple products. So I bought a used Mac Pro on EBAY, received the unit in good condition, set it up and booted. after I got it online I discovered it was due for a software update. No problem. I followed the software update icon, downloaded 4 updates and began the 2 hour download. When the download completed I clicked to install and left the room. when I returned the screen was blank. I grabbed the mouse in an attempt to "wake it up". The fans kicked on and it sounded like a jet taking off bot the screen remained blank. It has not booted since. Any ideas on how to recover?
Me: bought off ebay? then take the DVD OEM discs and clean system install.
Upper right corner "About this Mac..." More.... takes you to System Profiler.
Top lines of what model etc. do not include serial number but you might want to call and / or check that too and order replacement DVDs if it didn't have those.
but for now, Wipe the drive.
You can backup first if you want.
Utility folder: Disk Utility: Restore: allow drag and drop the source and target.
www.macupdate.com "backup programs" I recommend Carbon Copy Cloner to maintain bootable backups and can also archive changes. Similar to what Paragon Manager Suite offers in Clone OS to SSD.
Boot from the OS X DVD it should have come with. Choose the Utilities from menu bar : Disk Utility to repair or format. Then go back and Install OS X.

First, if at all possible make a backup of the drive in its present configuration. If something goes wrong during repair attempts and makes things worse you will have a backup. You will have to decide how to work this in the light of any present backups you may have, for example, a backup that may be a few days out of date. In that case you may want to keep that one and make a second backup of this as they are now, though I realize people often don't have a lot of empty drives sitting around.
Boot from the System Installer disc that came with your computer or is the one for the version you currently have on there, select language if applicable, choose utilities, run Disk Utility and verify (and repair if necessary) the drive. You can verify a drive from DU on your main drive while booted but I have found this can result in incorrect reporting of errors. To repair your drive you have to run it from a drive other than the boot drive anyway. Next, boot from your drive in Safe Mode (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107393) and repair permissions. You can repair permissions while booted from the installer disc but this uses the permissions configuration on the installer disc which may be out of date if you have run any updates on your computer. Booting your computer to Safe Mode restricts the number of things running on your computer while permissions are being run and does a bit of spring cleaning at the same time.

1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer (Edit: Do not use this disc if it is not the same general version as what you have currently on your computer, e.g. use a Tiger disc for a Tiger drive, not a Panther disc), then restart the computer while holding the C key.
2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
3. Click the First Aid tab.
4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."

Macbook pro (snow leopard) will not boot after software update
I helped my mom buy a Macbook Pro for herself for Christmas. Today, I connected it to her old eMac and used the migration assistant to transfer files over. It was unable to estimate migration time on the only user (after 45 minutes) so I didn't migrate the user. Then I tried to pair her macbook to her new bluetooth keyboard, but no magic happened, so I tried to use the bluetooth setup assistant, which crashed. So I ran a software update, hoping that this would fix whatever the bluetooth problem is. Despite having updated on the 23rd, there were 4 updates. None seemed applicable but I installed them anyway. Now the computer won't boot at all.
Software update said that I had to restart for the updates to take effect, so I restarted. The harddrive went whirrrrrr and the grey screen with the apple logo and the spinning circle displayed. Then the harddrive stopped going whirrrr and 10 minutes later, I started looking on the support site for what to do. I found this:
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=10564149
Per the instructions in the last post, I fscked the drive (although -f, in accordance with the fsck help). This found no problems. The next suggestion was to boot from the OSX install disk. Only one problem-- there was a disk in the disk drive when the problem occurred and the disk eject button apparently only works while in the gui. I can't install from disk if I can't get the existing disk out of the drive.
So, any other ideas on what I can do to get this machine to boot?

Since it's new, you're entitled to 90 days of phone support (3 years if you buy AppleCare). It sounds to me like you may have some hardware issue(s) going on - you should not have the sorts of issues you're having with a new Mac. Apple will probably be much better and faster about getting you fixed than this board may be able to if that is the case. -
HT1444 mac pro will not successfully load snow leopard
mac pro will not successfully load snow leopard 10.6 ? presently using 10.5
Haha! That's true. Though I've noted many users here calling a Power Mac a Mac Pro and visa versa.
When my Power Mac died and I brought it into the Apple Store to have them look at it, the first Mac Pros hadn't been out that long. Even the staff didn't know the tower Mac they had out on display was a Mac Pro. I pointed out that it had two optical drive bays in front. Only the Mac Pros have two. All Power Macs have only one. -
My 2006 iMac running Snow Leopard won't boot even after erasing and re-installing Snow Leopard. I erased and re-installed by putting the iMac in Target Disk mode and usin my MacBookPro as the host. But after numerous attempts I still can't get it to boot either from the HD or DVD drive. I just get the white screen after the wheel stops spinning. I can't get it to run Hardware Test - just get the white screen. If I use Disk Utility via my MBP it says the disk appears OK. All the Snow Leopad files appear to have been installed. What can I do?

Perhaps you installed the wrong version OS X onto the iMac, you can't use the disk from another Mac.
clean the disk.
If it's not working then use this method to create a bootable 10.6 USB from the iMac machine specific 10.6 disk or the 10.6.3 retail disk on your other Mac, use it to boot the iMac with.

Snow leopard won't boot, but windows bootcamp does.
My mac has a partitioned hardrive. I have xp on one side and snow leopard on the other. Starting yesterday, snow leopard won't boot. I ran the apple hardware test and came up with these 2 codes: 4MOT/4/40000003:HDD-1347 and -1352. The mac still runs properly though if started with xp.
That error is the HDD cooling fan I believe.
Could be many things, we should start with this...
"Try Disk Utility
1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu at top of the screen. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
3. Click the First Aid tab.
4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
5. Click Repair Disk, (not Repair Permissions). Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)
If perchance you can't find your install Disc, or are running 10.7+, at least try it from the Safe Boot part onward.
Re-install if that doesn't work. -
Do I need to install the drivers on my old Mac Pro disc or from my Snow Leopard disc?
Hi,
I've got a 2008 Mac Pro (dual quad @ 3GHz) w/ 24GB RAM and I've got Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit installed. What do I need to install?
On my newer 2009 iMac (which included Mac OS X 10.6) I just inserted that disc specific to the iMac and installed the drivers, but the disc for my Mac Pro is old (10.5.2) do I need to install the drivers on it or not? Can I just insert my Snow Leopard 10.6 disc to install Boot Camp etc., or won't that include drivers for the Mac Pro? The Mac Pro is running Snow Leopard 10.6.8.
Thanks.Thanks for your reply,
I have both the silver discs specific to my iMac and Mac Pro models that you receive with your Mac, and a general copy of Snow Leopard that you buy from the store.
I used the silver disc that is specific for my iMac to install the drivers, and Boot Camp 3.0 on my iMac. But with the Mac Pro, the software is older and only has Boot Camp 2.0, thus I'm wondering if I can simply use the software on the general copy of Snow Leopard I own, or does the silver disc contain specific drivers for my Mac Pro that I need?
I'm under perhaps the wrong impression that the silver discs that you get with your Mac purchase contain drivers for your specific Mac model which you can't get from the general Snow Leopard disc.
Thanks. -
IMac 27' (year 2010 - Snow Leopard) won't boot - white screen only
Hi,
my 2010 iMac 27in running Snow Leopard won't start - when I switch it on, I can hear the chime, the screen goes white and gets stuck at this (no Apple logo, no question mark, no mouse pointer). I have waited for minutes but it's definitely stuck.
When there is a DVD in (tried both OSX Instal and Apps Instal), I can hear the drive reading for a few seconds, then it goes silent.
I have found a few similar topics in this and other forums - the issue was solved or helped by entering one of the special boot modes via keyboard shortcuts upon startup. In my case though, none of these shortcuts work - with the sole exception of Cmd+Alt+P+R to reset the NVRAM. What I tried was: C, D, Alt, Eject, N, T, Shift, Cmd-V, Cmd-S ...none of them has any effect.
I learned there are some issues with a wireless keyboard when using these shortcuts, so I got a USB one to rule that out - but it didn't help.
In the beginning, I heard "clicking" noise I am not used to hearing - so I suspect a HDD failure but it would surprise me the machine would not indicate that in some better way than a blank white screen. The clicking then went away - could be after I did the NVRAM reset - not sure.
I also performed an SMC reset by unplugging the power cord for a while - no effect.
As per one recommendation, I tried NVRAM reset a few times in a row. Didn't help but, interestingly, I found that after 3 such resets, holding D will eject the DVD (without the 3 resets, "D" won't do it). Prior to that I had no way of getting the DVD out.
The computer was running fine before I switched it off for the night on the previous day. There was no system update, no change I am aware of.
The only thing beyond default is extra RAM but that has been there for months now without problems (and just to be super sure, I removed the modules but no effect).
At this point I have run out of ideas - any suggestions are very welcome. Some things you can try.

Mac book pro is stuck on installing snow leopard. won't work.
i recently was mucking around with my mac book pro and soon found my self stcuk with the installation of the 'snow leopard mac OS X' no matter what i did it just wouldn't go away, all i wanted was for my laptop to just go back to normal and get back to what i had been doing only a few hours ago but nope nothing, not even the snow leopard would download to finish things off. so i contacted apple support whom we spent about an hour chatting with. that was basically hopeless, they were very nice but they just didn't know what they were doing, and best of all they wanted to charge me. so at the very ending when they told me that my hard drive was fried and there was absolutely nothing i could do but to get it taken to an apple store and pay for them to replace my hard drive i asked them if i should do the online repair thing, and he told me no i shouldn't its just a waste of time and it won't work. so i neglected him told him a thank you and guess what, i got it to work. now my laptop is good as new and i didn't need to pay to get the hard drive replaced. lol. ok so for the people who are facing this oh my gosh its such a headache but we can do thins. so write these steps down and i promise they will work and you don't need to pay to get your perfectly fine hard drive replaced. ok so shut down your laptop completely. then when its completely off. hold don't the command button and R hold them both down and then at the same time press the on button keep holding them, you can take your finger off the on button but keep the others on the command and R until a white screen appears it will ask for wifi and then it will reset everything for you like when you first got your laptop. just follow through the instructions they give you and all is well. i hope this was help full for you if this happens.! (btw i can't remember if it was command and R or the option, alt button and R but just try the command one first and if that doesn't work then the other one)

MAC Pro start up problems ( Maybe Snow leopard issue?)
I can't get to start my Mac Pro,
My mac started working slow and then I had a white screen, I went to apple Geniuis and the reinstaled Snow leopard. and then it work but with a diferent hard disc.
But after a few days it starts to go slow, and then uploading bar shows up at starup and takes long. After a day after the wheel starts turning at start up and my macpro won't work it keeps on wheeling. I tried to reboot with the disc but it won't reboot.
Now I put my old hard disc it works but slow. My hardrives are new and have plenty of space.
Any idea what it could be?
THX.What I always start off with:
SuperDuper or Carbon Copy Cloner
Disk Warrior or another disk maintenance tool
Then start resolving like any other issue: one at a time.
cables, printers, devices - unplug them all and add back after the problem goes away one at a time
SMC Reset
Safe Boot
Apple Hardware Test
Why do you think 10.6?
Does all your software and drivers meet SL?
Clean install vs update in place
Did you import old prefs data and files and applications?
You have the old X1900 with its problems?
Or you have 7300GT OEM also old, and failing.
Or you upgraded to a new video card (but then you wouldn't be using Tiger).
You might be runnning programs in the background or processes that are corrupt or not compatible? -
Mac Pro and Radeon 2600 HD Snow Leopard 10.6.7 and 10.6.8 Crash
I have a Mac Pro, 2009 quad core xeon 2.8ghz with a ATI Radeon 2600 HD video card. The computer is running 10.6.8 currently. With 10.6.7 and 10.6.8 the comptuer crashes frequently. Looking through the logs, I see some errors thrown by the kernel when it crashes. There are some relating to the WindowServer, which reports as being "stuck" by the process monitor. When this happens, the screen locks up and nothing on the screen moves except the mouse. If I was watching a movie for example, the movie on the screen would freeze but the audio would continue to play. I am still able to ssh into the computer and send a shutdown command to turn it off (or my wife powers it down by hitting the button). It is driving me nuts trying to figure out what's going on.
Steps I have taken to correct this:
Reinstall OS from scratch on another disk 10.6 to 10.6.7 combo updater
Flash the PRAM
Run the computer's diagnostic utility from original disk (ran three times, no problems detected)
Reinstall OS from scratch on yet another disk 10.6 to 10.6.8 combo updater
Remove all USB and Firewire devices
Smash head against screen and table
Steps not taken yet
buy new computer
buy new video card
smash computer in frustration
Below are the log files for my last crash from this morning. At 7:43, I woke the computer from sleep. The following is everything that is displayed in the All messages section of the console until a reboot. Anyone have any idea on how to fix this or what I can do? Any help would be appreciated.

How can I restore mac pro back to original with snow leopard
I want to restore my macpro back to original, I dont have restore disk, just snow leopard disk. How can I do this? Thanks
A nice phone call to Apple usually results in a replacement disk being sent to you.
I understand your intention is to give this computer away. If you were selling it, not having the original install disks dramatically lowers its value. -
Snow Leopard won't boot (10.6.2, MacBook Pro)
I recently did a fresh install of the retail DVD on my MacBook Pro.
Last night before I shut it down, I repaired the disk permissions with the disk utility, it is maintenance that I have done regularly since Apple released OS X. I saw some error about FontInfo but unfortunately I did not pay much attention to it.
It boots from the DVD. I tried verifying the permissions, and get a whole slew of errors of this type:
Open error 5: "Input/output error" on System/Library/Frameworks/ApplicationServices.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/A TS.framework/Versions/A/Resources/FontInfo/ and the names of a bunch of fonts starting with "G".
GBMetro24Mono.ttf.(extension)
Garamond.0.44D68.fontinfo
Geeza Pro Bold
Geneva
Georgia Bold
Garamond
These appear to be System fonts.
I then tried to verify the disk and it failed! Gives an invalid key length for the catalog file. This is most unfortunate...The general approach at this time is to ask if you've checked for any problematic fonts (all languages) with Apple's Font Book (look in the Applications folder). Find and remove all duplicates also.
Start there to be sure all fonts that are in play come out with a clean bill of health.
Don't hesisate to perform wholesale deletion of old and/or little used fonts - be skeptical of anything that has come from Office 2008, including those related to an Equation Editor installation.
By all means be sure any 3rd party apps AND plug-ins are Snow Leopard compatible.
An additional measure is to clear the existing font caches:
http://www.macworld.com/article/139383/2009/03/fontcacheclear.html
That said, 10.6.2 release notes have this to say about fonts:
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3874
Fonts fixes provided for:
• an issue with font spacing
• an issue in which some Fonts are missing
• font duplication issues
• an issue with some PostScript Type 1 fonts not working properly
Good luck in any case.
Did you update via Software Update or did you download the combo? If you used Software Update, get the Combo updater instead and re-apply:

Following a drop, my MacBook Pro with Snow Leopard won't boot OS X
I get to the grey screen with the twirling icon, but it gets no further.
I have BootCamp installed and can run up Windows XP.
What are the techniques for salvaging data and/or repairing the OSX partition?BTW - I upgraded to Snow Leopard later on - should I use the Snow Leopard disk or the one that came originally? Or maybe either should have that utility....
...well the Snow Leopard disk seems to be doing the job.
Verify Disk decided that a repair was necessary and this is now in progress. Fingers crossed... -
Hi, I've seen a lot of discussion on this topic but nothing specific to my situation. I have two macs, a personal mac (macbook running Snow Leopard vers. 10.6) and a newer work macbook pro (late 2011 running Lion vers. 10.7.5). I want to use some of the applications at work (that is on the Macbook Pro) that are on my home macbook with Snow Leopard. I cloned the entire HD of my Macbook onto an external drive. The clone seems to have worked as I can use it as a boot disk for the macbook (from which it was cloned). However, if I try to boot the MacBook Pro running Lion, with this same clone on the external drive it won't work. I get a bit of text in the background and an overlay in dark grey saying (in several languages) restart the Mac by holding down the start key etc. I don't know if this has to do with the kernel panic problem or the Lion restore disk business. I don't see the point in trying to do an internal partition of the MacBook Pro hard drive and then add the cloned Snow Leopard, if I can't get the thing to boot externally as it is.
Does anyone have any fixes for what really should be a simple proceedure but is not?Make sure the mac you are cloning from has the combo 10.6.8 update applied to it. The late 2011 models need at least 10.6.7 and better with 10.6.8. So if your older mac is running anything lower than 10.6.7 it will not boot on the 2011 model.

Snow leopard won't boot up on lion
I have been using a Mac Mini with Snow Leopard to run my adobe suite programs. It worked fine. A few months ago the hard drive failed on the Mac Mini and I purchased a new Mac Mini running Lion. I'm having problem with my adobe suite running these programs with Lion.
The solution I came up with was to partition an external hard drive and install Snow Leopard as a startup disk. I used an iMac to do this and Snow Leopard runs fine on my partitioned disk with the iMac that is running Snow Leopard. When I try to run Snow Leopard as a startup disk on my new Mac Mini with Lion, it will not start up and run. I've visited a number of forums online on the subject and spend time with apple tech support. So far no one has come up with a solution. When I try to run it on my new Mac Mini with Lion, it will proceed through the start screen past the apple icon until it reaches the main program screen, then it stops and no applications appear.
I'm wondering if you have any ideas I could try? It would be nice if the adobe products run well on Lion but I'm finding that's not the case.rkaufmann87 wrote:
Yes you are right Snow Leopard will not run on a Mac that was built after Lion came out. Apple has seen to that with some type of hardware or firmware block.
No that isn't it at all! When OS X is installed on a Mac the version of OS X is formulated for the hardware of that Mac. Attempting to run earlier versions of OS X than what the machine initially shipped with will be missing drivers and not run. Some hacks have been done to force earlier versions to run however they usually don't run well because they don't have the correct drivers and never will. BTW this has always been the case with OS X and is NOT specific to Lion.
Well if you look at the early 2011 MBPs they came with Snow Leopard and the hardware is just about the same as late 2011 MBPs and you can't even try to install SL on the late models. It won't let you as I have tried. All the computer does is Beep Beep Beep
Why is that? Becasue Apple has lock out the hardware or in firmware, EFI, code to not allow it.
Formulate this.
I have a brand new Dell E6420 notebook that came with Winidows 7. If I wanted to I could install Windows XP or Vista on it. Would I need SOME drivers after the install? Yes I would. Would the system run without those drivers being installe? Yes it would. But it would still install and run.
Oh and by the way PCs and Mac use the exact same hardware.
So why can't you install a version of SL that originally came on a early 2011 model MBP on a late 2011 model MBP.
