Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive & clear caches.)
Try trashing them in Safe Mode, reply if that doesn't help.

  • Ipad mini not recognised by Mac Pro (OSX 10.6.4)

I have an ipad mini (6.1.3) I have connected it to my Mac Pro (OSX 10.6.4) via the thunderbolt/USB lead supplied. The device is not recognised in the finder or in itunes, though it does charge via this port. Is this an issue with my OS version? My itunes version? Is there a simple fix?

An iPad isn't designed to mount as a drive in Finder, it should only appear in iTunes and (if you have photos on the iPad that were taken with it, copied it to it via camera kit, saved from emails/websites) then it should also appear in iPhoto, Image Capture and Aperture so that you can copy them off.
But I think that you need iTunes 10.7+ to sync an iPad Mini running iOS 6, which I think requires OS X 10.6.8+

  • Applications launching extremely slowly - Mac Pro, OSX 10.6.8

    Hi,
I have tried everything I can think of but perhaps some of the experienced people on this forum have seen this before. I have a Mac Pro about a year old and everything was running fine until about 2 weeks ago. The applications take extremely long to start up and settle down but eventually they do. Entourage, for example, takes 10 minutes or longer. The computer boots normally though.
Once everything has settled down they seem to run just fine but starting any new application will take a very long time. The curious thing is that after boot the first couple of applications seems to load up a usual but after that things slow down. I can't detect anything unusual in the activity monitor and the affected apps show up as "not responding" but if you wait long enough that notification goes away and they seem to work fine.
I have firewire connected to a Protools Digi 002 rack and Ethernet connected to a Time Capsule, USB connections are a 24" Cinema display and mouse.
The machine is an 8 Core 2.4 Ghz, 6 GB RAM (4.36 GB free ), 1TB HD (700 GB Free)
This is what I have done to attempt a fix:
Restore from a Time Machine backup from several days prior to the start of the incident (1 week ago).
    Re-install OSX 10.6.8 combo update
Delete and restore various applications (like MS Office 2008).
    PRAM/SMC reset
Techtool Pro complete test suite scan including disk surface scan, directory rebuild and optimization
    Flush the Cache
    Rebuild Permissions (several times)
So far nothing has solved the issue. My next step was to try here and then do a complete re-install from the ground up (erase HD, install OSX, install applications). I didn't want to take that step unless there was no other alternative because it is a pain.
Also it does not answer the question of "what is wrong" so I can avoid it again so if anyone has any clues/suggestions/sage advice I would greatly appreciate it.
    Cheers,
    JdanS

    Hi Linc,
Thanks for the suggestion. I forgot to add that to my bullet point list (I tried it already) but to be thorough I followed the steps again.
The results are the same but while I was waiting for Entourage to load (23 minutes this time btw) I ran a sample on the process under the activity monitor.
Not sure if this adds any value but here is the output:
Sampling process 164 for 3 seconds with 1 millisecond of run time between samples
    Sampling completed, processing symbols...
Analysis of sampling Microsoft Entourage (pid 164) every 1 millisecond

  • 2006 Mac Pro (OSX 10.7.5) and USB 3 speeds

I'm considering the purchase of a HighPoint RocketU 1144CM USB 3.0 PCIe card and would like to know if there's anything in the architecture of my 2006 Mac Pro [Build 1,1] which might limit throughput speeds to USB2 standards. The manufacturer's [HighPoint] website claims compatibility with OSX 10.7.5 (my current operating system) but does not make any mention of the year in which the computer was built. Will I be able to obtain USB 3.0 speeds or would I just be wasting my money? Any insight would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

There have been more limitations and choices in support for even the 2008 and earlier.
Chipsets change, some use drivers and drivers that support 32-bit kernel and a smaller number of users, have hampered choice.
I was using two Sonnet SATA II controllers, the E2P and the E4P. Those worked and of course speed was fine, as was ejecting, sleep and other features and behavior.  The Allegro has probably changed over the years and there are cheaper alternatives.
www.xlr8yourmac.com does have readers reports in a database and write-ups.
It has also been discussed here many many times, and on MacRumors forum for the Mac Pro.
    What is the state of USB 3.0 on Mac Pro?  (  1 2 3 4 5 6 ... Last Page)
Highpoint can be iffy in support. As to USB2 speeds, only if the device(s) are a factor, and Allegro does not support hubs or non-storage devices (phone, tablet, card readers etc)

  • Mac Pro OSX 10.6.8 - Quicktime 7.6.6 too long to open only on one account

I have a Mac Proc with OSX 10.6.8.
I have downloaded Quicktime 7.6.6 from http://support.apple.com/kb/DL923  and installed it in the Applications-Utilities folder.
The application works fine when opened from my User account.
But, when I open Quicktime from my Admin account, the application takes 3 to 5 minutes to open, finder says that the application is not responding and the dock moves laterally signaling that there is a problem.
I should be most grateful if you could please help me to solve this problem.

    Hi, Simon.
You can instruct iTunes and iPhoto to save their respective libraries to a different disk, e.g. your second hard drive. You can also move existing libraries for these apps to a drive other than your startup disk.
See the links concerning moving these libraries cited in the "More ways to save space if you have a spare partition or second hard drive" section of my "Freeing Space on your Mac OS X startup disk" FAQ.
    Good luck!

  • Brand new to forum.  Can a Maxtor IV One Touch external hard drive previously used on a PC be formatted to work with my Mac Pro OSX  version 10.6.8?

I've never participated in a forum before; so, please let me know if I'm going about it wrong.
My question is this:  Can a Maxtor One Touch 4 external hard drive that was previously used on a PC be set up for use on my Mac Pro?  I'm preparing to upgrade the Mac to the most recent software version and it was suggested I back everything up first.
I reformatted the hard drive so it is currently empty.  There are icons on my Mac desktop for One Touch 4 and Maxtor Manager but other than that nothing appears to be working.  There are no drives showing in the Maxtor Manager so I suspect that's where I need to start.  However, I don't know enough about what I'm doing to move ahead on my own and I don't want to screw anything up.  If anyone knows the steps I should take next, I'd sure appreciate hearing from you.

I am embarrassed how simple that was.  I did warn you that I'm technologically challenged; I'm pretty sure that proved it.
The external hard drive is formatted as Mac OS Extended (Journaled). The link you provided indicates the external drive will work with Time Machine.  I've never worked with Time Machine and don't know what my next step should be.  Would you please walk me through it?
Your help is greatly appreciated.  From the points you have accumulated, I can tell you have helped many others and I thank you for your generosity.

  • Installing Windows 7 on Mac Pro OSX 10.8.4

As the title suggests im trying to install Windows 7 on my Mac Pro.
There are a few issues im coming across whilst trying to complete this. The main being that Boot Camp doesnt recognise the Windows disc to install from. After further reading i saw that you could essentially mount an ISO to a USB via Boot Camp. I did this successfully and then when i tried to click on 'Install' after deciding the parition sizes i just get the message 'The installer disc could not be found' - so to me its not attempting to locate the USB to try and install from. I could be way out on this and it be that you cant actually install from a USB.
So basically if anybody could provide some advice on how to install Windows 7 from a USB on my Mac Pro via Boot Camp

HP Deskjet 3054 J610, need to know how to set it up on a wireless network.  The HP installer disk I have says this verison not supported.  I cannot find a newer version.
The printer worked on old Imac and a different network.  The network now is a Verizon jetpack 4G LTE and a Mac Pro Laptop.  USB connection does work.
I have reset the printer to defalt.  However I am unable to find a way to tell the printer what network to use.  The Apple printer software does not give me a way to do this.
