Mac Pro overheating; can I replace the power unit fan?

After much strange behavior with my MacPro2,1 model I installed Hardware Monitor and discovered that the temperature readings for some of my Memory Modules and for the sensors on the Power Supply location 1 and Power Supply location 2 are very high.  With no load the temperature is reading about 62° C on the "Power Supply Location 1" sensor and 85-90° on "Power Supply Location 2" sensor.  I installed smcFanControl and found that I could cool the Memory Modules but even with all fans set on maximum speed the Power Supply temperatures droped only slightly to about 78- 80° C.  All of the fans increased their RPM except for the "Power Supply Fan" which remains at 599 RPM no matter how high you set the Power Supply fan on smcFanControl.
All this leads me to suspect that the Power Supply Fan is either not running at all or is not able to accelerate in response to high temperatures in the power supply area.
My questions are these:
    1. Can I visually confirm that the power unit fan is not working?  That is, what do I need to do to actually visualize this fan in question and see if it is running?  Is there another way to confirm that the fan is bad aside from just inferrring this from the high temperatures and findings in smcFanControl?
    2. Is fan replacement a job that I could reasonably expect to perform myself or do I need to take it to an Apple repair shop?  I have replaced hard drives and RAM in Powerbooks and a Mac Mini, installed PCI cards, etc.
    3.  Are there diagrams and/or instructions for doing this sort of thing?
Thanks.

If you  only have one DVD drive, you can shine a bright light straight back through the lower drive area where you'll see a screen with fan blades behind it at the rear end of the SuperDrive cage. That's the power supply fan at the front of the power supply. You should be able to see it spin when you power up. I found that smcFanControl couldn't control the PS fan on my Mac Pro 1,1 either (it does work on the 5,1's PS fan). If you remove the SuperDrive carrier, you can get directly at the PS fan for more effective dust removal.
Diagrams and instructions for how to do that and much more can be found here http://tim.id.au/laptops/apple/macpro/ which is a source of Service Manuals. X423424X gets the credit for posting that link; I just bookmarked it.

  • Can I replace the power module in my iMac G4 17" Flat Screen computer?

My iMac G4 17" Flat Screen will no longer power up. It has been getting slower and slower the longer it was running until finally I have no power at all.
Can I replace the power module, where do I get one, how much do they cost and how big a job is it to swap it out?
Any help, or information that you can give me will be greatly appreciated.

  • Now that I upgraded to Maverick on my Mac air, I can not use the power button to shut down the computer anymore. any suggestions?

Now that I upgraded to Maverick on my Mac air, I can not use the power button to shut down the computer anymore. I now have to go to the apple icon in the upper left corner.  Any short cuts instead of going to the apple in the top left corner and hitting shut down.  Doing that all the time, I feel like I am back at work using a "Windows" computer.

This a is tricky one, but you can still do it. Instead of pressing the power button, hold it down for a few seconds and then you'll see the shut down options dialog pop up.
I guess they were trying to prevent accidental touching of that button. They did something similar with the Eject button a few versions ago, where you have to hold down Eject instead of just tapping it so that you don't pop out a CD by mistake.

  • XFX 8800GT in a Mac Pro - how to connect to the power supply

I want to install a XFX Geforce 8800GT in a 2008-Mac Pro (running Vista only; no boot camp). Where can I get the necessary power cable to connect the card to the Mac?
I know that there are two non-standard(?) 6-pin power connectors on the main board, which are meant to connect those “booster cables” to. I know that these cables are available via mail order (e.g. from ATI for approx. $13). I also know that Apple’s support is not very helpful with questions around non-supported hardware.
*Here’s the problem:* Instead of two 6-pin molex connectors this card has only one, but requires the use of a special Y adapter to connect to two 4-pin molex plugs (as seen here: http://www.com-tra.de/img/p/06759_o.jpg).
*My question:* What is the proper way to connect this graphics card to the machine? Is there a matching cable available somewhere? Could I perhaps simply use two booster cables and a 6-pin molex Y-adapter? What about getting the power from somewhere else, e.g. optical drives?
    Any help is much appreciated!

It depends on whether XFX's GeForce 8800 GT is overclocked and what the demands of the fan assembly might be.
It's really easy to find out. When I just connected one power feed to Radeon HD 3870 X2, it didn't show up to Vista 64 (while the Radeon HD 2600 XT which was also installed was clearly recognized).
I shutdown, added the second power lead, and powered up. This time it showed up.
Also, sometimes you will get an audible alarm if the card is deficient on power - especially if it's the only GPU installed.
In the case of the HD 3870 X2, instead of a "Y" connector, I used both Apple proprietary power feeds that were connected to the motherboard's PCIe 6 pin power sources. You can use an external power source (like an ATX power supply) if you run short of power sources but then you can't put the side cover on.

  • How can I replace the power supply IN the time capsule

I have a TimeCapsule that has a bad powersupply. I have opened the timecapsule to confirm this. Has anyone done this before? If so, where did the power supply come from? Cost? I took this to the Apple Igneous bar and they said there is nothing that can be done about it.They said it couldn't even be opened, but simply peeling the rubber bottom off and unscrewing a number of tiny screws and that's it. The 1 TB drive is LOOSE in there. That was a bit of a surprise. I had thought that the issue was the drive itself was bad. I had hoped that if I removed that the AP part would at least work, but after opening it up and firing it up I could hear that the power supply was buzzing thus the conclusion it was the issue.
I am going to put the SATA drive in a reader to see that it is indeed ok. If that checks out, then I know for certain it is the power supply, but I don't know what to use as a sub since the unit needs both 12V and 5V. I'd just as soon find a good supply and use that. Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks,
    John A Kostelac

What version is your TC.. A1xxx from the rubber foot?
Power supplies are not available from apple. They do not consider it repairable. It is a sealed consumable.
Power supplies are available from ebay.. simply type time capsule power supply into search.
This is absolutely standard issue that has been ongoing for ages and ages.
    See https://sites.google.com/site/lapastenague/a-deconstruction-of-routers-and-modem s/apple-time-capsule-repair
For a multitude of ways to fix it.
The 1 TB drive is LOOSE in there.
No, it is not loose, it has rubber mounts with pins in the bottom base plate. You cannot see the mount points with the base off. This is standard hdd mount for low noise and vibration.
I had thought that the issue was the drive itself was bad.
Drives seldom are the problem. The Gen2 WD black has been less than great though.. and later spinpoint in Gen3 not so good.

Three beeps at startup almost always indicate bad RAM. You probably need to get your RAM replaced. Bring it in to Apple for a definitive diagnosis if you are unable to run the Apple HardwareTest

Tanks dominic23, do you think that the dead battery can affect the macbook performance? I do alot of video work, and since the battery died i cannot do a smooth preview of my videos in premiere cs6, seems like a memory problem but it worked fine before the battery issue.

  • Can I replace the wireless card in my Macbook Pro?

Can I replace the airport extreme card (Wireless G) to the new N card that come in the new MBP?

Yes. It has been done. I have heard that the wireless n card for the mac pro will fit the macbook pro. I haven't done it yet though...I'm undecided about whether to update my laptop so i'm going to wait a while before i void my warranty.
An apple dealer have offered to perform the installation but can't guarantee it will work, and say it will void my warranty but that's up in a month anyway... I'll let you know if i do it.

I want to Connect my Mac Mini as a Slave to a Mac pro Server while at the same time using the Mac mini's thunderbolt ports peripherals ( ie monitor, Sound Card, Hard drives) Creating a poor man's new mac Pro. Can this be Done?

Well, I really would love the new unreleased mac pro however , I'm not sure of the expected cost , Everyone speculates from $3,000 to $8,000, in which I may have to wait a while to purchase.
To the point .... I want fully functional thunderbolt ports to be on the current mac pro's .... wonder if anyone had workarounds yet?...  or could I chain the the current mac pro to a mac mini to make that happen?

Just got a new mac pro and can't manage to set a password and keep it.  It keeps telling me I have the wrong password.  I want to start over and I can't even get back in to do this bc it won't take any of my passwords.  How can I start over completely?

You got a new laptop? try asking there or in Lion forum.
If it has Lion, use the Recovery Mode boot Command-R
Use that to erase and reinstall - it has network install ability.
Want MacBook Pro forum or Lion Community?
    MacBook Pro
    Lion Mac OS X Communities
New, as in from Apple, it would have asked for full setup.
