Mac pro parking hard disks when not in sleep mode

I have noticed over the last 3 months or so HD's (2,3, and 4 ) are spinning down when I'm away from machine- even when I'm running logic 9 or other apps then spinning up as soon as I click on icons, apps etc .The computer is not asleep when this happens and the computer does sleep as expected under normal conditions. My energy settings are as normal -Screen sleep in 15 and computer sleep 1hr.
Does any one have any thoughts I have recently done SMC- no difference and have updated to 10.6.8
any thoughts would be appreciated
Thanks

Thanks

  • How do I fix my early 2008 mac pro boot hard disk. Lost everything when it crashed hard, can not reinstal via cd/dvd drive... are there any fix get it boot from dvd drive?

I have an early 2008 MAC PRO Quad Core 3.0ghz processor. 8 Gig of rams, with a 1 Gig memory  Radeon 5770 HD Graphic Card running the latest Version of Snow Leopard OS.  Last week lighting struck the house take out all of my hard drives (4) thank god the surge protector mitigated the mother board from damaged, use the Parted Magic to check out the motherboard and it intact with no damage. I can boot with the Parted-magic and be able surf and post this question to this forums. I replaced a newly formatted hard  drive and trying to installed OS X Mountain Lions to the new drive, but unable to have it boot in my MAC PRO DVD, I get the usual chimes during the booting processed but the screen remain blackout, but able to boot with Parted-Magic to surf the web and access Apple sites/forums.
I am not well verse in using the Parted_Magic to repair or get my-mac to boot normally so I can reinstall OS X. Any help would appreciated.
    Thank you

Go to System Profile and look, does it say "MacPro3,1"?
    That is 2008.
FBDIMM would be 800MHz. Did you use older slower 667MHz in yours?
You can but take a hit in performance.
    Sounds like MacPro1,1.
Mac Pro (3.0GHz quad core (dual CPUs) 8GB 667 RAM)
In 2007 March an 8-core 3GHz did come out 2,1.
    So just to be clear.

It was all working fine a couple of days ago. At the time it randomly shut down I was trying to use Boot Camp to create a Windows 7 area,
Whenever you want to install Windows, remove all the drives other than the one Windows goes to. And if you use a dedicated drive YOU DO NOT NEED Boot Camp Assist, unless you use XP, which really is limited and crippled (one processor, 1.9GB RAM support).
And when it freezes, your only choice is to nuke (reformat) and restore or get out that backup CLONE you made before (ie, Step #1 in the Boot Camp Guide).
Sure that whole NTFS / MBR / GUID could be an issue, but you should just have a blank drive or clone.
No don't bother Apple, they seem to not have a good sense about Windows on Mac Pro anyway.
Other than zap pram from cold boot / tried booting with NO drives inside and just 10.6. DVD - should be fine.
You should be fine iwth Windows 7 DVD and one drive, or even XP.
Make sure you take your time and reconnect cards etc properly and any cables.
Booting from OS X DVDs may not work if there is a drive with a totally shot directory or partition table. Put them in FW case and turn on AFTER OS X is booted.

  • Mac Pro Locked Hard Disks

I've been having some serious issues with my new 12 core Mac Pro.  It's a long shot to ask the community for help on this one, but you guys always seem to have the best answers so here goes:
Problem:  Mac Pro has trouble booting (frequently just stops at blank gray screen unless I have install disk in and hold down "D" while booting), and internal & external drives are locked saying I don't have permission to read or write to them.
History (as best I can remember):  Got the Mac Pro and moved 3 of 4 internal drives from my old MP to the new one.  One sounds like it has a bad drive head and doesn't mount. I replaced the stock RAM with RAM from Crucial.com (24GB of 3 x 8GB as recommended by Crucial, removed all stock RAM first).  Used the computer and started by using Migration assistant in Target disk mode with a FW800.  Although both computers were set not to sleep, it still froze at a certain point in the transfer.  After trying unsuccessfully, I finally did a clean install and went back to migration assistant to transfer only apps and documents (no settings this time).  It stopped during the documents transfer, so I started doing manual transfers from the old computer in Target Disk mode via FW.  I had transferred large amounts of data, and was attempting to open a Photoshop file on the main HD when it gave me a message saying I didn't have permission to open that file.  I noticed the whole folder was locked, so I made the mistake of going to the Macintosh HD (with all system files), changing permissions and applying to enclosed folders.  Obviously, this was bad.  I am not sure if this was before my error or after, but I then saw that all the other internal drives were now locked as were external drives.  After trying several things including booting to Install DVD & running Disk Utility to repair permissions, archive & install OS etc, I was finally unable to boot.  Weird thing is that the same is now true of my original Mac Pro.  I did a clean install of the OS on the main HD of the new MP, and it still wouldn't boot.  I called Apple Support and cut the power, held the power button down for about 10 seconds, held P, R, Opt, & Cmd while booting, and after no luck with that, the guy was going to have me do a diagnostic with the install DVD by holding down "D."  It finally loaded into the welcome to Mac and setup.  I set everything up with the new OS, but am still locked out of internal & external HD's, and still have trouble booting.  I downloaded MemTest and am running in Single User mode and thus far (almost through the 3rd test sequence) it looks like all my RAM is fine.  I'm absolutely pulling my hair out!  Ok, that wasn't really pertinent to the history.
Does anyone have anything else I should try????
And if you even bothered to read all that. . . THANK YOU!  I really appreciate the guys on these forums.
    Lawrence

And now. . . it seems to boot normally!!!  That's one try after having run the RAM test with MemTest.  I am still locked out of my (non-system) internal drives.  Could anyone just tell me how to use BatChmod to reset them.  I'm about to set owner as my username, but don't know for sure on Group or really any of the other settings.  I've got what I THINK they should be, but I understand I could cause some problems if I'm not sure.  So I'm asking.
    Thanks,
    Lawrence

  • Mac Pro Server fans rev when wake from sleep

I have a former Mac Pro 2010 (5,1) server that I am using as a desktop. Ever since I got it, if allowed to sleep, when woken the fans go to full blast and stay there until the machine is restarted. I have reset the power manager and PRAM with no change. I have just lived with it never sleeping. now I have a 2013 6 core on the way and this machine will hit the eBay listings soon so I wondered if anyone had any ides about this. I hate to tell a prospective buyer s/he can't sleep the machine. The firmware is also up to date.
    Thanks in advance,
    Ted

I don't rermember exact numbers but the temps were low normal, this first happend in my air conditioned office, which I lke cold. I don't think it's a sensor problem because when it's working hard the temps rise to consideable levels and I usually up the fan speed myself before the fan speed increases on it's own. Also it will happen if I sleep it for 5 seconds and wake it. I originally thought that a server might have different firmware and being unattended this might be a failsafe if one were to accidently be put to sleep but the firmware seems the same as a desktop machine. Has happene over three boot drives and two operating systems so it's not some software weirdness. The machine is immaculate inside, no dust anywhere. I'ts got me beat. I suppose I force the rise again and check the log oon Console, see if anything shows up.

  • Why is my Macbook Pro running so slow when returning from sleep mode?

I got my new Macbook this past Christmas so it is about two months old. I have the 13" Macbook with the standard 4GB of RAM (not sure if that matters), but when I got my mac I downloaded a bunch of games and such which may have slowed it down initially, though I have downloaded OnyX and Appzapper to uninstall apps and clean my computer. Also I have deleted EVERYTHING from "Login Items" which I thought might help. Basically whenever I am done using my computer I just shut the screen, I don't shut it down or actually click "Sleep Mode" so I'm not sure if shutting the screen puts it in "Sleep Mode," but whenever I open my computer back up I get that spinning loading icon when I click on anything on my desktop and it usually takes 5-10 minutes of this super slow loading before I can actually use my computer. Not sure what the deal is but it is clearly super annoying and I'm hoping to find out how to get around this. I have six 2GB sticks of RAM that I am hoping to trade for two 4GB sticks of RAM to speed up my computer but I am not sure if that would even fix my problem. This is my first Macbook, besides my mothers Mac desktop that I have been using for years throughout High School, but I am a windows guy. I consider myself pretty good with computers, not an expert but I can fix 95% of the problems I encounter, but this one has been stumping me! Thanks a million in advance!

    Hello Linc -
I hope you don't mind but I have a similar issue. Might I be able to enlist your assistance with this issue? I've done as you said, and I have copied the approximate range of messages during my most recent incident. What I'm noticing is that my Mac is staying busy even while asleep. I'm concerned about this behavior, hoping you might be able to help debug the situation and set me on a good path to resolution.
Here's my data (I don't know for certain that I grabbed the proper amount or range of data, but hoping this will help):

  • Why does my Mac Pro turn completely off while in the sleep mode?

Why does my Mac Pro turn off completley overnight when I had placed it in the sleep mode?

A power fluctuation may also shut your computer off from sleep mode.
Is there anything in the System Log overnight?

  • Powering down/sleeping hard disk when gone?

I really have never thought about this until recently that I've been leaving my desktop on 24/7 (acts as part server here or there too). I am wondering:
    1. Is ability to power down or "sleep" hard disks when not in use for extended time (like sleeping/gone to work/etc.) reliable in linux? (Maybe silly question but just checking )
    2. Is it worth it/makes sense? I mean, would it warrant the effort to set up the process, that it would be good for the hard disk and/or save power...
    Thanks a lot fellow Archers

    1. I don't really know whether it is reliable, but this thread assumes that to much spin downs can shorten hdd life:
...you could use smartd to tell you how many times the hdd spins down per hour. if its too much you could use hdparm to turn off or decrement power management on the hdd in order to preserve its life
    2. I have a device to measure power consumption directly at the electric plug. My rather old desktop computer consumes normally, when no tasks run, 65 Watts. If I put my only hdd to standby with hdparm, consumption decreases to 60 Watts. Now just make some calculations...
(Actually cpu has a larger effect on energy consumption.)

How can I recover the NAS back up to put on my new Time Machine.
Talking to Apple Support Adviser was a waste of time on case number 239647273
    Any thoughts or pointers?

Keep the old OS around and just kick the tires and test new OS. Apple has a history and habit of breaking support in things like this.
You can use TimeMachine as one level of backup, and even there there were changes with Lion, I would always recommend foremost backup clones of every volume. And clone (SuperDuper etc) can be stored on something like HP NAS Media Server which also was supporting TimeMachine, iTunes - until Apple made that harder and more their own proprietary format.

Rather than "upgrade" I would clone the system, and do a clean install, then allow Setup Assistant to import your files.

  • Internal hard disk is not visible in disk utility in Macbook Pro

    Hi All,
I am trying to repair my mac. But in disk utility, the hard disk is not visible to proceed. Its showing disk0 -> volume with only 1.79GB. and all the options are disabled. The capacity of my mac book pro was 500GB.
Please help me in solving this issue
    Thanks in advance....

So you've booted into your Recovery partition and you don't see any drives in Disk Utility to select in Recovery mode?
If the drive cannot be repaired, it's likely dead and you'll need to purchase a new internal drive.
    Good luck,

  • Folders that I copy from my Macbook to my External Hard Disk does NOT appear on any other drive that I connect the Hard disk to (TV, PC, ... etc.)

    I'm facing a bit of a problem.
Any folder I copy from my Macbook Pro to my External Hard Disk does NOT appear on any other device that I connect the Hard Disk to (TV, PC, etc).
The Hard disk format is "MS-DOS (FAT)".
The folders that are copied from Macbook appear when I connect the Hard Disk to my Macbook only, yet, the folders that I copy from a PC to the Hard Disk appear on Macbook, PC, and TV and are also available from editing from both Mac and PC.
I was advised to install "Paragon" software and I did but I'm not sure how to use it to convert the folders on the hard drive to any format that can be read on other drives or devices (NTFS or otherwise).
I'd appreciate some help. Thank you.

Hi Simon.  How is it formatted, FAT or NTFS?
I only ask as OSX will only read NTFS partitions unless you install an App such as Paragon NTFS or Tuxera NTFS.

  • How do I back up the Mac Pro with Target Disk Mode?

My Mac Pro's partition has become corrupt, and will not boot. After trying to resolve the issue, it would seem the only solution is to reformat the computer, and start again.
Nonetheless, I would still like to back it up. I have a MacBook Pro, a firewire cable, and an external hard drive connected to my MacBook. The partition is showing on the MacBook. However, Time Machine cannot back it up - It only sees my MacBook's partition.
Is there any program I can use, or heck, anyway with just Mac OS-X on the MacBook I could use to back up the Mac Pro partition?
Also, when I format the Mac Partition, I assume the Windows Partition will also be formatted? The Windows XP partition is working fine at the moment.

to be on the safe side. I would back up both partitions. that being said, if you try to erase the mac partition it shouldn't erase the pc partition. if that fails you could try deleting the mac partition and then re-adding it.
But if the drive is really scrambled you may have to re-partition the whole drive; witch would erase every thing.
You could try using disk utility to copy the drive as a disk image:
http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1553 explains how to do this in section "Instructions for backing up to an external hard disk via Disk Utility"
if disk utility fails you could try:
you could try carbon copy cloner

  • Mac Pro RAID 5 disk goes offline frequently in a random way. What can be causing this odd behavior?

    Hi dudes,
I installed recently two Mac Pro RAID cards inside their corresponding Mac Pro systems. Four 2 TB Hitachi SATA disks are contained inside each system, and configured as RAID 5. Yes, the operating system is installed on this RAID 5 volume in order to get the highest performance of the array, taking advantage of the RAID 5 protection (Autodesk Smoke runs in each system; this application works only with uncompressed video in real time). I already had tested both systems keeping separated the boot disk just for the operating system, and making the RAID 5 volume just with three 2 TB disks, but the performance was slow on both systems.
The performance is now very good, but unfortunately, in both systems happens that sometimes one of the disks goes offline with no apparent reason. The RAID Utility immediately reports the failure and it is mandatory to declare as spare the disk that went offline. Then the rebuild process begins, but in the meantime, the performance goes down in a noticeable way. Sometimes it is even worse, because the disk disappears completely. Then, it is mandatory to turn off the system, and boot it up again, in order to see in the RAID Utility the missing disk, which needs to be declared as spare in order to be reintegrated into the RAID 5 volume in a slow rebuilding process.
Some important remarks: this very new Mac Pro systems do not have the iPass cable (at least apparently; I already disassembled completely one of these systems). This cable is mentioned in one Mac RAID card manual that I found over the internet. The diagrams do not match exactly with the Mac Pro nor the Mac Pro RAID board. I did not find a proper iPass connector in any of the Mac Pro RAID cards (?!). So, my guess is that currently the communication between the system and its Mac Pro RAID card is just by means of the internal bus. I think that if the iPass connection were mandatory, the RAID Utility would report it with a noticeable error message. Please advise.
I think that these Mac Pro RAID cards need a firmware upgrade, in order to be able to work fine with big SATA drives. Again, please advise.
    Thanks in advance from Mexico.
    Sincerely,
    Martin Ponce de Leon

    Hi Grant,
Thank you for your prompt response. The manual is a PDF document issued by Apple and it seems OK, but no updated to the latest Mac Pro system and Mac Pro RAID. I do not find the link where I found this manual. The systems belong to one of our customers. As far as I remember, in the printed manual included with the boards, it is not mentioned anything about the iPass cable, just about the battery cable. Do you know where can I get a PDF manual of the latest Mac Pro RAID card and the latest Mac Pro system? This client is far from our offices. So, I would prefer a PDF copy of this manual.
The drives that have gone offline, once they are back, are reported in a good status in the RAID Utility. Besides that, I have tested them in another system in our facilites, and all of them work fine. So, my guess is that the high capacity drives are not yet supported by the Mac Pro RAID card, or it requires a firmware update.
They do need to have in the same volume OS and video storage because three disks do no provide a good performance (they need also RAID 5), but four disks work fine... excepting when one disk is missing. Please advise. Thank you.
    Best Regards,
    Martin

i am using for first time the time machine and an external hard drive because I want to erase my macbook and start from zero files. Am i keeping my files in the portable hard disk when I will connect it again with the macbook or the time machine will erase all?
I would like to know if after I erase all my data, empy hard drive inside the macbook, the time machine will erase all my files that I have saved in my "WD "My passport" external hard drive

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
Time Machine has to erase the external disk in order to make backups. Before setting Time Machine up, copy the files of your external disk to the hard disk of the Mac in order not to lose them, and then, set up Time Machine. The first backup will start automatically.

  • 10.5.2, Mac Pro with AE Card, AEBS (not Gigabit) lost wireless connection

Since I upgraded to 10.5.2, I have been having issues with my wireless connection on my Mac Pro. Here's my setup - an 802.11n Airport Extreme Base Station (not gigabit one) with a 802.11g AEBS connected to it. the 802.11n is running on the 5GHz Spectrum only and does not share with 802.11a (so it's running 802.11n only). The 802.11g AEBS is set to run on the 2.4GHz Spectrum and is set to accept both 802.11g and 802.11b. The MacPro has an Airport Extreme Card running 802.11n. The 802.11n base station is almost next to the 2 base stations.
Every once in a while, my Mac Pro will get disconnect to the basestation, and when I go to the Airport Signal icon, I can see both my basestation. I just have to select it again as if all of a sudden, my Mac Pro forgot which basestation it is connected to and get totally confused. It is one thing if the signal to the basestation is gone (have experienced that a few times when I have the 802.11g base station), it's something else to just get disconnected for no reason. Of course, when I select my basestation again, everything works fine (not as if it has problem re-establishing connection). This is getting a bit annoying, especially when I am trying to backup my files only to have been disconnected from the basestation. This doesn't happen every time I backup my files. It happens in random and there can be a long time without having drop the connection and then it can drop the connection 3 times in 10 minutes.
    Help!

I have read all the other post, but got no satisfying answer other than people saying Apple really screwed up with 10.5.2 and that doesn't really resolve the problem. Plus, it seems to me that most people's problem are with a 3rd party base station rather than an AEBS. My only other option maybe to down grade my Airport Card software, because I think the problem is with the Airport Card driver that's bundled with the Mac Pro, and frankly, I am not sure if Apple is ignoring the problem or working hard on it, but in either case, it's not fast enough in term of damage control.
