Mac Pro PCI Express Power "Booster Cable"

hey
anyone happen to buy that vid card power cable from welovemacs.com??
http://www.welovemacs.com/9227128.html
i'm planning to buy a pair.. but i'm not sure if it will fit....
one end plugs into the motherboard.. the other end goes into the vid card
but the question is does it fit the Mac Pro pci express power socket?
and the other end of it does it fit any standard pc vid card? or is it also smaller?
as i plan to buy this for my Mac Pro so i can power up the 8800 gtx
thanks!

"Connecting the range extender to an Ethernet network so that the range extender could act as a wireless access point instead of a range extender."
Yes, I am essentially using it as an access point for the Mac Pro (attaching a simple ethernet cord in the back, it will automatically get a handshake with the network), and a wireless extender for my P.C. laptop and Power Mac G4.
If this doesnt work, I'm gonna move my cable modem and wireless router to my office (and attach Mac Pro directly to modem or router).
I dont want to have to buy a new Apple Router when I have a perfectly good D-link system going. It currently works with my roomates Powerbook and Airport Express Sation (air tunes), as we got it working last night. If all else fails, I wait till the new express card comes out and get it installed at my local store.

  • PCI Express Power Cable for ATI X1900 XT

I was given a X1900 ATI but the card didn't come with the power cord (booster cable) that connects to the motherboard. I'd like to order one but have no idea what I need to get. I know it's a 6 pin to 6 pin connection but that's it. Anyone would know where I could find the right info? I tried ATI/AMD but they only show the old power cable (4 pin inline).
    Thanks.

    Hi there Rlong50,
You may want to try force closing all open apps and resetting the device as an initial troubleshooting step. Take a look at the articles below for more information.

  • Mac Pro won't power optical drive or internal hard drives?!?!?!?!

I'm in a strange predicament. I've acquired a used 2006 Mac Pro that I've gotten to power up just fine. I get the start up chime and the screen goes grey. The problem is that it will stay on that grey screen for 5 minutes or so until a flashing folder appears. It never loads the OS. So I've loaded the OS on an old Firewire external HDD and the computer will boot fine off of that. When using the external, I've noticed that System Profiler is not detecting my internal HDD or optical drive. I do not think they are receiving any power. They both show no signs of activity, functionally or audibly. I've tried reseting the SMC, zapping PRAM- even swapping power supplies. Nothing. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

Hi Grant Bennet-Alder. The HDD and optical drive are both installed and all the cables are connected to both the logic board and the devices themselves. The reason I think they aren't receiving power is usually you can hear some activity from them. These seem completely dead but work fine in a different computer.

  • Mac Pro won't power up

I'm running a Mac Pro, 2.66 with 2g memory. The only "custom" modification I've made is to add a second hard drive and partition it for Windows using Boot Camp. I did this shortly after I got the machine (a couple months ago) and it has worked fine since.
We had a power outage locally, and my Mac would have been in sleep mode at the time (I was at work). I have the Mac plugged into a UPS (though I'm not 100% certain of the rating, I bought a fairly large one). The power outage was due to a storm, though the UPS has surge protection also.
When I came home, the Mac was in sleep mode, with the front power LED indicator ON. I could not wake it, and the only way to power it off was to hold the power button.
However, once shut down, the computer will no longer power up. It often clicks when I push the power button, and there's a faint sound / electrical hum like it's going to turn on, but no fan / hard drive noise.
I have attempted to reset the SMC per the directions on the support site. When the mac is unplugged, nothing happens when I hit the SMC_RST button. When it's plugged in, two led indicators flash red.
I've attempted to start it up plugged into the UPS as well as bypassing the UPS and plugging directly into the wall.
I think repair / shot power supply might be my final answer here, but I want to check to see if anyone has any advice before I drive a couple hours to my closest apple store.
Thanks for any assistance, even if it's just, "hey, you're SOL."

I have tried both methods of resetting the SMC (all cables out, plug in, power up, and the second method of opening the thing up and hitting the SMC_RST button, which I've done both plugged in and not) and that doesn't appear to be working.
When I hit the power button, it's obviously getting some juice (lights flicker), there's a click and a faint electric whine, but neither the fans nor the drives start up.
The only other oddity is that two of the LEDs flash red when I hit the SMC_RST button, but they're not on or flashing at any other time.
What confuses me about the issue is that the front power LED was on when I first got home, so it wouldn't seem like it could be a total absence of power (and indeed the flickering of LEDs upon pressing SMC_RST seems to indicate that there's electricity somewhere, at least). However, I can't get fans or drives or even the front LED to light.
I've moved the computer off the UPS and to a different circuit, repeated all SMC_RST steps there, and no luck.
Is there anything that prevents even the fans and drives from starting? (Like, if I don't plug in the keyboard or display, should it at least power up and beep? I've tried with these things plugged in and not plugged in and it doesn't seem to make a difference...)
    Thanks

  • Mac Pro Desktop faulty power cord

Eeeek! My Mac Pro power cord failed on me. I own a three-year old Xeon 64-bit workstation that decided not to power up today. After troubleshooting, I thought it might be a faulty power cord, so I borrowed a cord from my old Power Mac (really old, from 2004) and it actually worked. I am able to power up, but I don’t want to rely on a 10-yr old power cord for much longer. Does anyone out there in Mactopia know where I can buy a spare? I can't seem to find a source by searching online. All that pops up are MacBook Pro power cables, and my system is a desktop not a laptop.
    Any help is appreciated!
    Jennifer

There is nothing magical about that power cord -- it is a regular EIC power cord like the ones described here:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IEC_60320#C13.2FC14_coupler
Radio Shack probably carries them, although they seem to be having an identity crisis.

  • Mac Pro wont even power up

    Good evening all,
So i've got a really strange problem with my Mac Pro. Its the early model, right after Apple switched to Intel chips (2006 or 2007?) so its an older machine. Never the less, up until this point it has been a solid work horse for years.
Everytime I press the power button, the white power LED comes on for a few seconds, and I hear fan noise then the machine just "clicks" off, almost as if someone removed the power cord abruptly. Needless to say, I didnt remove the power nor was the supply interrupted. I've tried diagnosing the problem by removing external devices one by one, but that made no difference. I then started removing internal components (DVD drive, HDDs etc) and at first that "fixed" the issue and the machine would power up, however, now even when I have all the DVD and HDDs removed, the machine just clicks off momentarily after pressing the power button so im wondering if there is something fundamentally wrong...
My thinking is that it is either the power supply or the logic board are broken... but i'm not sure how to isolate the problem to ensure its one or the other (or something else entirely)?
Any help or advice people might have would be very much appreciated
    Cheers, Tim

This might very well be a bad power supply. Below are instructions for P/S troubleshooting.
    Diagnostic LEDs
The Mac Pro logic board includes a set of LEDs to help service providers troubleshoot the
computer. The LEDs are located toward the rear of the logic board, under the memory cage, next
to PCI card slot 1. You can view these LEDs by removing the computer’s side access panel and
looking through the memory cage to the logic board below. LEDs 2, 3, 4, and 5 are normally off
and will automatically illuminate if an error occurs. To read LEDs 1, 6, 7, and 8, you must press the
DIAG_LED button, which is adjacent to the LEDs (white button to the right). To press the DIAG_LED button, use a nylon probe tool.
    Power Supply Verification
To power on, the computer’s logic board requires “trickle” power. If the system fails to power on,
first reset the SMC. If the computer still doesn’t power on, follow the procedure outlined below to determine whether the issue is related to the power supply.
    Verify trickle power
Diagnostic LED 1 indicates the presence of trickle power required by the logic board to begin the
startup process. LED 1 should be yellow when the DIAG_ LED button is pressed, indicating that trickle voltage is present.
Verify Power Supply Is Providing Power
Diagnostic LED 7 indicates that the main power is OK and within regulation. Plug in AC power cord, and press the power-on button on the front panel. LED 7 should be green when the DIAG_ LED button is pressed, indicating that the main power is OK and within regulation.

  • PCI Express Power question

I'm buying a graphics card that requires a 6 and 8 pin aux power connection for my 2010 Mac Pro. I f I am not planning to OC, is there any danger in using a 6 to 8 pin adapter on one of the cables?
    Thanks

Then you aren't buying a Mac OS card.
You can't OC a card in Mac OS so you'd have to be using Windows.
Besides, you can buy a cheap 450W PSU that provides 2 each of 6 and 8-pin modular power cables.

  • Mac Pro 8-core Power Supply Making Humming Noise That Comes And Goes

This is in reference to a Mac Pro 3,1 8-core purchased around Feb 2008.
Lately, I've noticed a strange noise coming from my power supply that sounds like the noise a refrigerator radiator makes. It's a humming noise that rapidly comes and goes, constantly.
The power supply fan speed is running at 599rpm
I'm not sure if the problem could've been caused by adding additional ram (12GB, OWC) or an additional HDD (3rd HDD, WD), but I didn't really notice the noise until after adding these components.
What could be the cause of this problem? What are my repair options if necessary (without Apple Care)?
    Thanks in advance.

I know for a fact it is not any of my hard drives because the noise is becoming more frequent no matter what hard drive I use, I actually have a 1.5tb, a 1tb, two 500gb and two 320gb drives, I have set an appointment to take my system in and have it tested, it is starting to crash 5-6 times a day. I can not get a lot of work done with this annoying spinning noise and the shutting down. Thank god for my Apple care, and I have visited various forums that lead me to believe its the power supply going out, with the symptoms it is having. This article and others like it explain what to look for when a power supply is going bad.

  • Mac Pro 2007 No Power to Hard Drives

While changing hard drives in my Mac Pro 2007 (model 2,1) today, I apparently shorted something out and there is no longer power being provided to any of the hard drives or the super drive. On first boot attempt, the fans went into over drive and I smelled something burning, so I quickly turned it off and reinstalled the original drive.
I am able to boot up off a Yosemite installer USB flash drive and run Disk Utility - confirmed that none of the disks are visible. Everything else on the computer seems to be running fine.
Does this sound like a power supply issue or I have a fried something on the main logic board?
    Any help is greatly appreciated!

  • Video software cause Mac Pro to lose power

My Mac Pro has begun doing something very strange. On Mac OSX Snow Leopord or Lion, when using video conversion software (HandBrake or MacX Video Covnerter) My Mac Pro acts like it los power from the outlet as my UPS connected via USB starts alarming. If I let the software continue to run my Mac shuts down. It never did this before and I recently did a clean install of both OS versions and the software.I have tried disconneting the UPS and my Mac stills shuts down. I have also reinstalled the two video conversion softwares with the latest version and get the same results.
I could use some serious help here.
