Mac Pro powers up on its own

I normally leave my macpro in sleep mode when I am not using it. But when I am going to be away for awhile or there is a bad storm, I will power it down. I have noticed the last few times that it has turned itself on.
I downloaded a widget that checks system schedules and found nothing.
Does anyone now how I can find out what's going on?

I posted a similar question here
http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=5386396#5386396
but no reply.
However, after reading here I think in my case it is my auto wake up event I have scheduled every morning so Super Duper can backup my system. Do you have anything like this scheduled? I might adjust my schedule and see what happens.

  • Mac Pro wakes up on its own!

I have had my Mac Pro for over two years, but only since maybe two weeks ago have I had this issue. I always put the computer to sleep when I'm not using it, but lately it will wake up "on its own" with the least provocation. The most frequent catalyst is static electricity, when I feel a spark from touching my doorknob, or turning on my lamp, or taking off my sweater, the computer will turn on, even if I'm a few feet away. Plugging the power cable into my nearby MacBook will do it too. And I think, though I can't remember exactly, that it sometimes happens without anything electrical happening nearby, just seemingly at random! Does anyone know if I can do anything about this?

This is for a Mac that won't sleep.
Here is KB article HT1776 with their tips.
    Mine follow;
USB devices and hubs often cause Macs to not sleep or wake quickly from sleep (notably HP printers and scanners, HP all in ones, and Cannon scanners). Disconnect all USB except for keyboard and mouse and try. If it sleeps, add one back at a time testing after each one to find the culprit. If you've set your Mac to receive faxes, it may not be able to sleep. It might also have a damaged preferences file.
If you use your Mac for faxing, open System Preferences. click Print & Fax, click the Faxing tab, and uncheck the Receive Faxes On This Computer box.
If that doesn't work or you've never faxed on your Mac, go to Finder/Hard Drive /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration and delete the com.apple.PowerManagement.plist and com..apple.AutoWake.plist files (if your Mac asks, type your admin. password).
If the latter file isn't present in the folder, go to user name(probably your name)/Library/Preferences, delete the com.apple.systemuiserver.plist file, and reboot your Mac.
    Hope this helps!
    P.S. One member here reported this (Michael Gleason);
"I have had this problem with my IMac G5. It is surprisingly irritating. LaCie's Silverkeeper backup software was the cause. By default it gave itself permission to wake up the computer to check if a backup was needed. Do you have this or a similar program installed which has scheduled activities including wake-up permissions as an option?"
Dave Hamilton provided this link, xlr8yourmac.com, to a member, which addresses failure of deep sleep with some users that updated and added new FireWire and USB card.
Also, here is Apple KB article TA2469 about PCI cards and sleep.
tomhorvat adds this; After few days of messing around I found out that I had desktop background (wallpaper) set to change every 1 minute.
After unchecking "Change picture..." in system preferences (under Desktop/Screen saver), my powerbook went to sleep all by itself.
Tristan Currier noticed this; "I have a Canon printer(shared) and my imac would not sleep. I opened up printer/fax in system prefs and noticed it said the printer was in use when it was off. Opened up the printer queue and noticed about 7 pending documents. Deleted them all and now it sleeps.
    Check the printer queue!"

  • Mac Pro shut down on its own, then on boot up it beeped steadily for 2 min?

I put my 2009 Mac Pro to sleep then the next day I find it completely shut down! I boot it up and then I hear a steady beep (every second) for about 2 minutes. After 2 minutes the beeping went away.
Any idea what caused Mac Pro to shut down on its own? And what does the steady beeping mean? The beeping is coming from inside the Mac Pro's speakers, not from my BOSE 5 computer speakers.
I don't think there was a power outage as the UPS is fully charged, and I asked a neighbor across the street.

I wasn't clear in my description, it's a steady continuous beep, it's a rhythmic beep -- it'll do this for 200 beeps or about 2-4 minutes.

  • Mac mini shut down on its own, will not restart, grey screen, spinning wheel. Unplugged everything, will still not restart. Did safe boot, will not restart after safe boot, only grey screen with spinning wheel.

Mac mini shut down on its own. Could not restart, chime, grey screen and spinning wheel. Unplugged everything but monitor, still only chime, grey screen and spinning wheel. Started in safe boot, shut Down, will not restart.
This happened a couple of months ago, unplugged everything and it restarted, now that won't work.

    Hi BDAqua,
I just did the repair as you suggested. T ran the disc repair, and twice it cam back, the volume macintosh seems ti be okay, I also ran the verify and permissions repair, both came back okay.
I was actually hoping that they would find something, so they could repair. I shut the computer down, and restated with out holding a key, and I started up great. I'm baffled.  I have moved 20 GB to an external hard drive, as I only had 10% open space.
I have Tech Tool 6, would you recommend to run a repair check on that, or just leave well enough alone.
I agree with you on the new Mac's, I have problems with no disc for back up, until they realize their mistake I will stay with Snow a Leopard. This is the first problem I have experienced, so I can't complain. Their last programs are not as perfected as under Steve, prior to his handling over the reins, hope this is not going to be the future we can expect from Apple.
I will wait to here back as to your suggestion regarding the Tech Tool check
    Thanks for all your help.
    Gratefully,
    Cheri

  • MacBook Pro turned off on its own and now won't turn back on.

MacBook Pro turned off on its own and now won't turn back on.  Battery had 41% just before this happened and green indicator on power cord is showing, so it seems like it's charging.  What should I do?

The led on the power adapter should be amber if it is charging.  Green just indicates that it is supplying power to the MBP.
    Try a SMC reset:

  • Mac OS restarts itself on its own

2 weeks ago my mac OS has begun to restart itself very often (every 1.5-2 hours or sometime even more often) on its own. If i don't have any word or excel doc opened, Max OS fails to restart as it stops at the moment it asks to save such document.
I also have a mac book pro 13 inch (besides MacBook Air) which runs OS 10.5.8 and it now experiences the same problem. Both macs are sync through Mobileme.
Please, advise how to fix this bug.
    Thanks!

Reinstall OS X and start doing some basic maintenance:
Kappy's Personal Suggestions for OS X Maintenance
For disk repairs use Disk Utility. For situations DU cannot handle the best third-party utilities are: Disk Warrior; DW only fixes problems with the disk directory, but most disk problems are caused by directory corruption; Disk Warrior 4.x is now Intel Mac compatible. TechTool Pro provides additional repair options including file repair and recovery, system diagnostics, and disk defragmentation. TechTool Pro 4.5.1 or higher are Intel Mac compatible; Drive Genius is similar to TechTool Pro in terms of the various repair services provided. Versions 1.5.1 or later are Intel Mac compatible.
OS X performs certain maintenance functions that are scheduled to occur on a daily, weekly, or monthly period. The maintenance scripts run in the early AM only if the computer is turned on 24/7 (no sleep.) If this isn't the case, then an excellent solution is to download and install a shareware utility such as Macaroni, JAW PseudoAnacron, or Anacron that will automate the maintenance activity regardless of whether the computer is turned off or asleep. Dependence upon third-party utilities to run the periodic maintenance scripts had been significantly reduced in Tiger and Leopard. These utilities have limited or no functionality with Snow Leopard and should not be installed.
OS X automatically defrags files less than 20 MBs in size, so unless you have a disk full of very large files there's little need for defragmenting the hard drive. As for virus protection there are few if any such animals affecting OS X. You can protect the computer easily using the freeware Open Source virus protection software ClamXAV. Personally I would avoid most commercial anti-virus software because of their potential for causing problems.
I would also recommend downloading the shareware utility TinkerTool System that you can use for periodic maintenance such as removing old logfiles and archives, clearing caches, etc. Other utilities are also available such as Onyx, Leopard Cache Cleaner, CockTail, and Xupport, for example.
For emergency repairs install the freeware utility Applejack (not compatible with Snow Leopard.) If you cannot start up in OS X, you may be able to start in single-user mode from which you can run Applejack to do a whole set of repair and maintenance routines from the commandline. Note that AppleJack 1.5 is required for Leopard. AppleJack is not compatible with Snow Leopard.
When you install any new system software or updates be sure to repair the hard drive and permissions beforehand. I also recommend booting into safe mode before doing system software updates.
Get an external Firewire drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
    1. Retrospect Desktop (Commercial - not yet universal binary)
    2. Synchronize! Pro X (Commercial)
    3. Synk (Backup, Standard, or Pro)
    4. Deja Vu (Shareware)
    5. Carbon Copy Cloner (Donationware)
    6. SuperDuper! (Commercial)
    7. Intego Personal Backup (Commercial)
    8. Data Backup (Commercial)
    9. SilverKeeper 2.0 (Freeware)
    10. MimMac (Commercial)
    11. Tri-Backup (Commercial)
Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQs on maintenance, optimization, virus protection, and backup and restore.
Additional suggestions will be found in Mac Maintenance Quick Assist.

  • Mac Pro powering off and on

    Hi All,
I have updated to OS X 10.7.5 on my Old Mac Pro (late 2008 or thereabouts) which was the latest OS X that was allowed.  Since then it worked for a short while perfectly, then started to power on and off continually and I only occaisonally get it to stay on for 3 mins before it goes in to the power off/on cycle.
During these cycles it usally reaches the power up sound and then powers down ect
    Please help!
    Cheers
    Paul

Ddi you happen to do a copy run start with module powered off? If so, I would think its expected behavior.

  • My macbook pro is moving on its own. Not sure if its being remotely controlled or if its a bug but its annoying!!

I have a 15inch Macbook Pro that has recently been acting wacky. It feels like someone else is controlling my computer but all my sharing featured are turned off and i have my firewall on so i doubt its being remote controlled. Using my cursor is a constant battle. Sometimes its fine other times it won't cooperate. At random times the cursor will move and highlight a word and define it. YES Define the highlighted word. While on safari it'll  randomly zoom in on the webpage im on,  and contiue to highlight and  try to switch pages. It'll switch from desktop to  dashboard on its own as well as  make my launch pad disappear and reaapear. without me touching it at all. SOMEONE HELP !

There are several possible causes for this issue. Please take each of the following steps that you haven't already tried until it's resolved. Some may not apply in your case.
    1. Follow the instructions in this support article, and also this one, if applicable. A damaged or defective AC adapter could be the cause, even if it's the right kind.
    2. Open the Bluetooth preference pane in System Preferences and delete all pointing devices other than the trackpad, if applicable. Disconnect any USB pointing devices. By a "pointing device," I mean a peripheral that moves the cursor, such as a trackpad, mouse, trackball, or graphics tablet. A plain keyboard is not a pointing device.
    3. Start up in safe mode and test, preferably without launching any third-party applications. If you don't have the problem in safe mode, but it comes back when you restart as usual, stop here and post your results. Do the same if you can't start in safe mode. If there was no difference in safe mode, go on to the next step.
    4. Reset the System Management Controller.
    5. If you're using a Bluetooth trackpad, investigate potential sources of interference, including USB 3 devices.
    6. A swollen battery in a portable computer can impinge on the trackpad from below and cause erratic behavior. If you have trouble clicking the trackpad, this is likely the reason. The battery must be replaced without delay.
    7. Press down all four corners of the trackpad at once and release. If there's any effect, it's likely to be temporary, and the unit needs to be serviced or replaced.
    8. There's a report that a (possibly defective) Thunderbolt Ethernet adapter can cause the built-in trackpad of a MacBook to  behave erratically. If you're using such an adapter, disconnect it and test.
    9. There's also a report of erratic cursor movements caused by an external display that was connected but not turned on.
    10. If none of the above applies, or if you have another reason to think that your computer is being remotely controlled, remove it from the network by turning off Wi-Fi (or your Wi-Fi access point), disconnecting from a Bluetooth network link, and unplugging the Ethernet cable or USB modem, whichever is applicable. If the cursor movements stop at once, you should suspect an intrusion.
    11. Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store to have the machine and/or external trackpad tested.

  • Mac Mini - Screensaver starting on its own and clock is fast ...

    Hi there experts ....
I've got a 4 month old Mac mini
    Model Identifier: Macmini3,1
Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo
    Processor Speed: 2.53 GHz
I've noticed for the past couple of months the clock is 4 minutes fast ....
And the screeensaver is coming on by itself out of nowhere ...
I/ve run disk repair ... Maintenance ... put screensaver to never and even disabled front row screensaver
I've reset pram and nvram ... ANy clues ....?

So even if you put the screensaver to never it still starts on its own?
Also you clock runs faster by 4mins?
I smell an OS issue. Partition your drive and install a fresh OS onto it. If it works(no problem there) then restore the partition into 1 drive. Zero out the drive and put a fresh OS in it
    **back it up first
If the fresh OS on the new partition still fails. it could be a hardware failure.

  • MacBook Pro erased files on its own?

I have a 13" MacBook Pro that is currently running OS X 10.8.4. About 5 days ago I took a trip with my mother and left the computer at home. Came home yesterday, got on my computer, and noticed that the background had changed. When I tried to access some files I needed for work, they were all gone. All of my files, documents, pictures, music, etc., were gone. My programs were still there (Photoshop, Parallels, etc.), but everything else was not. It was as if someone had entirely reset the computer. I asked my dad and brother about it, and everyone swears that my computer wasn't used while I was gone. Is there any reason why my computer would do that on its own? Is there anyway to get my files back? I have an external HD that thankfully has some files on it, but I haven't backed up my computer recently (which I'm now realizing was a mistake). But, if my files are gone for good I will at least have some of them. I greatly appreciate the help.

Oh my gosh. I am in idiot. That's exactly what happened. I have a password set on my computer, so someone in my household must have "forgotten" () they used the laptop. I panicked and just went straight for the worst conclusion! Thank you so much!

  • Loud pop, Mac Pro powers up, won't start up

So, here's what I found for anyone that can help... I have a Mac Pro tower, Quad Core Nehalem 2.66 processor. My wife said she heard a loud "pop" and found the computer off.  I tried powering up the tower, power came on, with a loud fan, and I could see a red light coming from the motherboard through the front (not normal?), but nothing comes up on screen.  Power button works fine to power up, and then I held it in to turn off.  Unplugged everything, then I removed the side panel, and the tray that has the processor and RAM. Now, as I lifted it out, a small stiff spring fell out of the housing, and I could hear something else rattling around inside.  Something obviously gave way, perhaps a capacitor?  Or is there a fuse assembly that may have given out?
Is there anything I can do, or am I relegated to bringing this in to Apple?

    That is rather extraordinary.
If you have an Apple store available, I suggest you make a Genius Bar appointment, take your Mac there and make the case that this sort of problem should NEVER happen, in or out of warranty. They will probably refuse, at first, to repair it free, but the manager may be able to intervene and get it repaired for you. This does not seem like abuse and should never have happened.
The next question will be, "do you have a backup of everything on your drive?" in case they have to send it out for repair.
If you choose instead to repair it yourself, There are long T-handle wrenches available to do that work.

  • My mac shuts down suddenly on its own

    Please help
Since installing 10.4.8 my mac has been shutting itself off on its own.
While I would normally applaud such energy saving activity, it isn't
appreciated when I'm in the middle of doing something.
Pretty much that is the story: mac shutting down suddenly while I'm busily typing something. One moment working, next machine has turned itself off.
None of the logs show anything interestingly amiss, but I could be wrong.
Anyone else experiencing this sort of thing?
    Thanks in advance,
    Carol Hatcher

My Appologies. I mistakenly thought that since I filled out the
fields below the message box with the model, os and other details that
they would be visiable to all. What a fool i was.
I have a iMac G5 running Mac OSX 10.4.8 right now.
    Other details:
    Processor: power pc
    Memory : 2G
I have owned it since May of 2005.
The shutdown now occurs while logging in. It took me three tries
tonight to get up and running.
Also, when logging in, i have to wait over a minute for the keyboard to be recognized - no response in the password
    field.
Best wishes to all and thank you all in advance,

  • HELP. Safari on my new Mac Pro won't open my own webpage.

I have just changed platforms from PC to Apple Mac with the sole purpose of generating new content for my web page www.austin-thomas.co.uk
Unfortunately, I cannot open my own web page using Safari on my Mac Pro running Leopard, although I can access other web sites without problems. I have tried my web site on several other Macs running Safari and Leopard and it loads as normal. I still have my PC linked though the same router as the Mac Pro and I can access the site OK via Windows Internet Explorer, so I don't believe it is a router or a permissions problem.
Any help or suggestions is gratefully appreciated as I have a new and expensive computer that for some strange reason is not compatible with my website.
    Many thanks in advance,
    Austin

It sounds like it's just timing out trying to access parts of the website.
Can you try changing your DNS settings to those provided by [OpenDNS|https://www.opendns.com/start] to see if that makes a difference? The linked website has easy to follow directions.
I've seen the occasional post that also mentions power cycling the router sometimes helps (even when their other connected computers were behaving fine - don't ask me how that works... )

  • Just got my first iPhone, an iPhone5. I added the contacts via my Mac, but the phone on its own added my 5000 Facebook friends as contacts and won't let me delete them. How can I delete them? Thanks.

I just got my first cell phone, an iPhone5.  I added my contacts via my Mac.  But the phone on its own imported the contact info of all 5000 of my Facebook "friends."  When I go to one of them, hit edit, and try to delete them, the phone tells me that I cannot delete a Facebook friend.  This is a nightmare.  Please, I beg you, tell me how I can get these Facebook friends off of my contacts list.  Thank you!
