Mac pro problem despite plenty memory

Hi Guys and Gals
I have tried all the things i read elsewhere including full wipe of HD and reinstall, reducing to 32 bit, removing some of the relevant files from the library extensions, emptying cache in terminal, removing all history and web cache, memory clean, removal of all unused software, removal of printers and so on.  The computer is still regularly freezing with the spinning wheel which is making it unusable as a live tool with ableton and traktor pro.  I can't find the blackberry files if they might be to blame.
The etrecheck info is below if anyone has any ideas.  Thanks in advance!!!!

How much real world performance difference would there be between the 1600MHz memory of a 4,1 Mac Pro and the 800MHz memory of a 3,1 Mac Pro? My main app is multitrack audio with Pro Tools. Thanks so much. The CPU speed of either one would be between 2.8GHz and 3.0GHz.

What are the differences.... firmware and build, there were tweaks to the PCIe bus itself. As a result 3rd party cards and booting is better.
Support in 5,1 firmware for more 56xx and W35/36xx processors. Also memory timing.
The 4,1 was "64-bit boot mode optional" and 5,1 was default. I don't know if there are changes but I assume so, even if it is not reflected elsewhere or in version number.
I don't know what the prices are but 2009, to buy one today, when the 2010 is $1800.
The 2008 of course was test bed for 64-bit UEFI and it sure seems even Lion and then ML are not as well engineered - outside of Linc who would be the least likely to have a problem.
I would assume 2010 has better support for 8GB and even 16GB DIMMs as well as for 1333MHz.
Nehalem family had only come out in fall 2008 and a lot of work went into making improvements well past 2009.
If you remember, there were serious heat problems with those and 10.5.7+ up thru 10.6.2 even with iTunes, audio, and hyperthreading and cores hitting and staying in 80*C range. That I assume was both poor code (sleep does not mean poke and ask constantly) as well as changes in SMC and kernel improvements, to work around. Microcode can be patched in firmware, kernel, by drivers and by code, but it is best when the chips and core elements don't need to be.
If someone is stretched, and can get 2009 for $1200 it might be a fine fit. That year offered the OEM GT120 which isn't really as nice and matched for today both OS and apps that rely on a GPU. And for odd reasons two such 120's don't work well in Lion+ but that is probably minor. Having the 5770 is just "nicer" though.
There are some articles about trouble booting with PCIe SATA/SAS/SSD and less trouble with 2010. Also support for graphic card and audio I think was one of those "minor" 5770 related support issues. But shows some small changes were made there too.
I wish someone would come out and pre-announce DDR4 + SATA3 along with PCIe 3.x (for bandwidth and more power per rail) along with say Ivy Bridge-E socket processors was going to be this summer's 3 yr anniversary and to replace the 2010 designed motherboard. But that is what is on Intel's and others drawing boards simmeringn in the pot.

  • Memory Leak in Mac Pro.  My Mac Pro has 16 GB memory

The memory (as shown in the Activity Monitor) goes from a high of approximately 11 GB free memory to a low of approximately 50 MB.  The leaked memory seems to be going to "Inactive".  When the memory is on the low end, the Mac Pro is very slow, sometimes freezing for several seconds.  Does anyone know what the problem could be?

An update to my original discussion message.  Now the Mac Pro has some extreme lag times when accessing programs, deleting files, copying files, etc.  This occurs even when the free memory as shown in the Activity Monitor is high (over 8 GB).  If anyone has an idea of how to correct this problem, please let me know.

    Problem:
During the hard editing in Final Cut or work in Motion I feel like my mac starts to slow down.
Especially during sharing video to h264 format. Mac starts very slowly rendering.
After the first failure in the system, I found this errors:
first error occurs in one module, then after 15-20 min. in all modules
    Is this  a hardware problem?
If not a hardware problem, is there some well understood fix for this?
    Sorry for my English.
    Thank you!

You may see that the Error detection-and-correction Hardware has found (and corrected) errors in some of your modules, as seen in this report:
    graphic courtesy anandtech.com
Modules that are giving errors are Bad. This is a Hardware Problem, but check to be sure the fan is running. If it gets a little bit worse, a Double-bit (uncorrectable) Error will occur, and you Mac Pro will halt on a kernel panic, machine check, uncorrected error or error overflow, detected by multiple processors at once. This is by design, to keep memory errors from poisoning your data.

  • Mac Pro 2.66, New Memory & Repeated KPs

    Hi all
I've had 4GB of RAM in my Mac Pro for some time now, in the following config
    Riser A - 2x1GB, EMPTY
    Riser B - 2x512MB, 2x512MB
I recently upgraded to another 2x1GB, which I put in the empty slots of Riser A... I did this back in February or so - purchased from OWC... as soon as I installed them, my computer ended up KPing almost immediately and when I rebooted, the MP wouldn't boot anymore off the main drive...
So I returned those modules and got a replacement pair, which I finally got around to installing this past week... the KPs started almost immediately and all seem to be related...
    Here's the latest one

I suppose you want some ideas on why or what to do?
First try with JUST the new 2 x 1GB. Riser A 1:2 with all the other memory removed.
Second, install the "original" 2 x 1GB in Riser B 1:2 (that insures the ideal 4-channel config also)
Third, the 4 x 512MB should be either left out, or slots 3:4 on each Riser.
    Fourth, insist on OWC TechWorks. And 2 x 2GB costs ~$30 more than 2 x 1GB.
Have there ever been parity errors? System Profile -> Memory.
Those can result in writing dirty data out to disk and leaving the system unstable.
Once you do get it back working you may want to do a fresh install or restore, depending.
Lastly, run Apple Hardware Test when you install new RAM.

  • I've got a mac pro problem with the starting up, but also a red light on the logic board solidly on. Its not among the diagnostic led. It's located near the BT adapter and the front fans. Also the fans run loud also. any solutions?

    Hi
I've got a mac pro late 2006, and i am having problem with it for quite a while now. the problem i am facing is the start up process, and the red light on the logic board. Earlier I've got the two led on the diagnostic leds 5 and 6 turned on without the diagnostic button being pressed, and i think those are related to the processors overtemp. I've managed to solve that by, removing the processors and re applying the thermal compound on the heatsink. what i have left now with is the red light on  the logic board at the time i plugged in the power. At the same time when this light come on, the power indicator at the front panel come on as well. i am not sure what is this light relates to. We've replace the power supply too, and gone through the SMC reset but seems no help.
Any idea on the problem? I am desperate about it, and i will be greatful if anyone can help..
thanks and hope for your best solutions
    Kari

I can't help directly with your problem but you might check here http://tim.id.au/laptops/apple/macpro/ for a service manual which could answer your question.

  • New Mac Pro problems

I got a new Mac Pro today from Apple and have been having major problems with it.
The OSX installs ok and i get through to normal screens etc.
the problem arises with the installation of the Apple Intel Security patch. on restart I get the "your need to start your computer" etc. Which normally means a kernal problem.
Every time ive booted or restarted the computer I get the same.
Ive tried booting it from cd no good. Ive tried safe boot - No good. Apple help desk - Useless.
Have done a disk utility check off the CDcd, all ok so it could be software related. Or it could be some hardware problem

I've got a Mac Pro with my wife's Ipod attached. Updating songs on the Ipod has become very, very slow. Literally, it's taking hours to move over a couple of albums.
Just out of curiousity, I hooked it up to a Macbook Pro in the house and everything was just fine. Tried reinstalling itunes on the Mac Pro and it didn't do it the trick.
All machines are intel based. Other peripherals are working fine.
    Any suggestions? Thanks.

Any tip or similar problem solved

If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
    Step 1
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Enter "BOOT_TIME" (without the quotes) in the search box. Note the timestamps of those log messages, which refer to the times when the system was booted. Now clear the search box and scroll back in the log to the last boot time when you had the problem. Select the messages logged after the boot, during the time something abnormal was happening. Copy them to the Clipboard (command-C). Paste into a reply to this message (command-V).
For example, if the problem is a slow startup taking three minutes, post the messages timestamped within three minutes after the boot time, not before. Please include the BOOT_TIME message at the beginning of the log extract.
If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don’t post many repetitions of the same message.
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
    Step 2
Still in Console, look under System Diagnostic Reports for crash or panic logs, and post the entire contents of the most recent one, if any. In the interest of privacy, I suggest you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if present (it may not be.) Please don’t post shutdownStall, spin, or hang logs — they're very long and not helpful.

  • Peculiar Mac Pro problem just cropped up

I've got a Mac Pro, about 5 months old. It has 4 hard drives and 8 GB of RAM. It has been running flawlessly for 5 months and it SEEMS to still be running flawlessly except ....
Today I've been unable to download anything from the net. It started this morning and was limited to one particular piece of software, but now the problem arises whenever I try to download something from any site.
    What the problem ISN'T:
    a. a Comcast problem (I have both a MBP and an MB wirelessly connected to the same network and I don't experience the problems on those machines.
    b. a router problem (see "a"), but in any case, I've reset the router, reprogrammed it. I've also reset the cable modem. Everybody else gets to download. My Mac Pro won't.
    c. a network problem. Everybody can navigate all over the net. The problem ONLY arises when I click on a link to download something. Neither Safari nor Firefox works; they both just sit idly going "duh, what do you want me to do?".
    d. a browser problem (see "c" above). I've cleared the caches and it changes nothing.
    What it SEEMS like:
a firewall setting that has somehow changed, although I've changed nothing.
What happened between yesterday and today:
Mostly absolutely nothing. I did receive my fourth 500 GB drive and plugged it in and formatted it. No software that I can recall downloading between last night and tonight.
    I've repaired permissions.
I'm completely baffled. Help and suggestions gladly accepted.

You should be able to remove the Plug In that is affecting Safari, by going to the Library on your Startup Drive (Not the one in your USER Folder or the one in the folder called system.
Inside you will find a folder called Internet Plug Ins, Locate the Plugin that is causing the Problem and remove it. You will need to have Admin proveleges to do this. I would move it to the Desktop to make sure you have got the right one.
After that I would do a search, for anything else related to that particular Plug in and get rid of what you find. IF you use Spotlight you may find that everything that has any reference to the words Speed Download will be listed so if you know how I would use a regular Cmd-F Search and set the Criteria to Name and Contains.
    That should do it

  • Quirky Mac Pro Problems

My Mac Pro has two strange little problems. Firstly, it never knows what time it is. Whenever I turn it on it's clock is wrong. I have it set to grab the time from the internet, and the timezone is right. I don't know what the issue is. Whenever I turn it on I have to double click the time and "Open Date & Time" then it sets itself.
The other issue is that it never remembers the correct background on my second monitor. Whenever I start it up, it assigns the backgroud from the first monitor to the second, and I have to fix it.
Is there anything I can do to get rid of these problems?

Did you by any change merge items from another system?
sometimes doing so (from PPC to Intel) can cause all sorts of headaches.
cache files and folders, prefs, etc.
    Or, is this 'as shipped'?
Also, there was a note today that some systems have an older system installed than what is on the restore/install disks it shipped with, so check the build number. Deals mostly with video performance, but who knows?
If your build number is 8K1054 or anything less than 8K1079, use the Install discs that came supplied with your computer to perform an Archive and Install. This will update your computer's version of Mac OS X to Build 8K1079 and should improve the video performance. "
